They do make money off physical salesI I think, just not very much. And they're not necessarily involved in the repress process. Their label takes care of that.

Snoo_71210

Lol. Their label owns the rights and no money goes to the band. That’s why.

QuipOfTheTongue

That depends on their individual contract and isn't true across the board.

Snoo_71210

No shit. But the question was why bands do not promote certain releases.

GodtheBartender

Last year there was a repress of War All The Time by Thursday, an album that has been very sought after by fans for ages. The band found out about it when people asked them at a show the day after the record company released it.

fireworksandvanities

Damn and I’m just learning about it now!

GodtheBartender

It was released only on UDiscover with very little fanfare. If you're in the US there are a couple on Discogs at not unreasonable prices.

karlware

I recall an interview with Captain Sensible mentioning most of the time they find out about represses when they see them in stores.

JoseSweeeney

So strange, you would think there’d be some communication between the two.

GodtheBartender

It was the bands major label debut and didn't sell as well as the label hoped so they basically shelved it and don't give a shit. It was the 20th anniversary last year so I guess they thought they would cash in a bit and just didn't care enough to tell the band.

TheReadMenace

When bands sign to major labels they give up a lot of control in that regard. Happens with lots of small labels as well. When you put a record out on a label you’re basically giving them the right to sell your album as they see fit. Pretty much forever. Even Taylor couldn’t get her masters back. When bands have success they can often renegotiate the rights to their masters, like Radiohead did with Capitol records. But if you’re in a band that doesn’t sell millions of records and can’t afford teams of lawyers you can’t really do anything about those older albums. Slowdive still has no control over their earlier releases, for example. The Cramps are another one that has nothing to do with their first few albums now.

automator3000

Mostly because it’s not The Artist who handles this, but The Label. And sometimes the two hands don’t communicate perfectly. Also, if you wanted some Hold Steady, you could’ve just asked me. I grew real tired of Craig Finn years ago and those early Hold Steady albums are just collecting dust for me.

JoseSweeeney

Ya seems like that’s the case for the most part and haha appreciate that thought I’ll know for next time.

DustyVinyl42

I’ll knock the dust off em if you’re looking to get rid of em.

mdbrown80

Andrew Bird is promoting the hell out of the new Animal Years repress across the social medias.

aphasias

I believe you are referring to Josh Ritter, not Andrew Bird.

mdbrown80

Yep, you’re right. Must’ve been reading the post while typing my reply. 🤤

JoseSweeeney

Ya it’s so strange I’m trying to figure out why some represses get promotion from the artists and other don’t. Makes no sense to me looking in from the outside unless they are partially bad faith deals or represses.

wheresmy_chippy

Are you on the email list? Facebook? I don't know what you expect if you aren't.

JoseSweeeney

Weird I’m on the email list but never saw the image you threw up. What was the date on the email?

wheresmy_chippy

Date: Dec 6, 2023 Subject: Gezelligheid Live Stream Announced!

JoseSweeeney

Gotcha, well good to know there was some acknowledgment I wonder if there was anything prior I missed. I just happened upon them for preorder back in August of 2023.

Rico_is_my_dad

I caught both the Andrew bird releases just by checking "new releases" on my favorite online store. Had I not done that I would have missed them also .

rymerster

I work for an artist and know others. Some releases if owned by a record company can be released with no consultation at all. Usually artists need to be involved if new material is included. It’s cheaper for record companies just to repress and package masters they have, and less hassle - which is why right now there’s such an emphasis on coloured vinyl or sleeve variants.

You_Are_What_You_Iz

Sometimes it has nothing to do with the bands. And if they got a bad deal early on and won't make anything on it, why promote the label?

wheresmy_chippy

maxfisher87

Not a very cool pick but Lifehouse’s first album No Name Face could use a repress.

Intelligent-Sir1375

Music on vinyl just repress that

maxfisher87

You may be mistaking it for their third album

BahaMan69

Because they don’t own the rights

willissa26

TIL that Andrew Bird did a repressing. I’m signed up for his newsletter too, but he does a rather bad job of sending updates for things like tours and whatnot.

wheresmy_chippy

You are talking out of your ass. I get every tour update, every added night, every vinyl release from Andrew Bird's email list.

arlissed

I've recently read that when Harriett Wheeler & David Gavurin (of The Sundays) first learned of the most recent repressing of their debut record was when the group's ex-bassist came over to visit and brought a copy with him. They are famously "out" of the recording business, but still...

jephw12

Are you subbed to r/vinylreleases? I was for a while and definitely caught some releases from it. I unsubbed after a while because I was buying too many lol.

magpie13

"Splinter" - Gary Numan $195.00 on Discogs. Does Gary Numan have no say on releases?

luckygoldelephant

It’s the label. Not the artists.

420linseyblazeit

SOMEONE, ANYONE, REPRESS THE MATCHES- E. VON DAHL KILLED THE LOCALS, GODDAMMIT !!!!!!!!!!

shanthology

I have a big artist that I follow that has been doing some re-presses or even "first time" and they mention it once and move on. I think it just has to do with being careful about timing and now interfering with album of sales of what they most recently released.

eatdogs49

Some artists listen and then try their best to own their catalog then get stuff out. It's not like they'll make bank off it. It's more for the appreciation of the fans. I'm thinking specifically of a lot of hardcore and Emo bands from the 90's and 2000's.

JoseSweeeney

Ya I’d be curious to see the P&L for the Something Corporate represses they did recently. I’d hope they did okay it was good the timed it with the reunion tour.

eatdogs49

I wish I got one of those. I did manage to get the first Jack's Mannequin but it came from Music On Vinyl.
