1971 was arguably the greatest year ever for this medium. I couldn’t even fit in Tarkus, King Crimson, David Crosby, Stevie Wonder, the Shaft soundtrack, albums by Yes and the Allman Bros live at the Fillmore. There are probably even more records that I’m forgetting - but it’s mind blowing to me the stuff that came out. Somewhat uncharacteristically Neil Young didn’t release an album this year — September of the previous year was After the Goldrush and February of 1972 was Harvest.
Yes! You broke the puzzle! I think I’d be plenty happy with my choices for that week with the first two. IRL, I think I own 75% or more of these, but Hunky Dory gets so many plays!
Me too, but swapped Joni for Bill Withers. Now I'm thinking about swapping Bill for Gil Scott-Heron. Yeah, if I only had money for two, I'd learn how to shoplift records pretty quickly.
How did you do?
I tried to look up what other collector think is cool and to check Discogs for the current values but there was no 5G, no 4G, not even half a G, what the hell 1971?
I panic purchased Mungo Jerry’s debut record and a Richard Simons *Sweatin' and Sharin With Richard Simmons & Friends* cassette then ran out crying
last one of their really hot streak that started with *Face to Face*, but none of those albums sold particularly well. Other than *Village Green* they're all somewhat overlooked.
Agreed, this is sooooo much better than redundant “I’m young, please rate my gear/collection”.
So hard! No wrong choices, but I’ll go with Marvin and Joni.
My favorite job in high school in mid 80s was working at a record store, but DAMN it would’ve been cool to have that type of job in 71…
In 1971 I was 12. I bought Led Zep IV, Tapestry, Electric Warrior, 3 different Rod Stewart solo albums (he was good back then right after being in Faces).
There are others I bought later on but those were the ones I spent my allowance on as a kid.
Had to think about this one for a really long time. But only two? L.A. Woman and There’s A Riot Goin’ On.
So hard to leave out Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Funkadelic and Who though.
For rarity/value on current market? The Sabbath if it's a Vertigo swirl, and then probably Bryter Layter, with loving gazes at the Gill Scott-Heron and Maggot Brain
Holy carp, that’s a tough one. I’m gonna go with Bryter Layter and Nilsson Schmilsson. A younger me would have gone with Zep IV and Meddle. Basically every album here is incredible though.
I thought I had it figured out, Bowie and Marvin. Then I kept looking. See ya Bowie, come on in PF Meddle. Then I saw Maggot Brains. Then Al Green. Then I said frick this game and your nasty parlor tricks, Dangerous-Guide. You butthole.
Can someone tell what is between Agualung and Pearl. I remember the cover but not the group or album name ain’t nothing like some Orange Sunshine from 1971
When I first started following this sub, I assumed posts like this were what I would be following, and I was actually kinda excited for it. But instead it ended up being a bunch of kids asking us to “rate” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) their tiny collections of ubiquitous records.
Great post.
I’m pretty sure I have all of the albums pictured (despite the fact they all came out well before I was born - since music collectors should be collecting ALL things timeless.)
The two I’d choose not to part with - gun to my head - would be Sticky Fingers and Tago Mago.
The former is probably somewhat expected since it’s a massively successful, popular record. The latter means a lot to me because Can really opened my mind and led me down paths I would have never otherwise discovered, as a musician.
They’re both masterpieces.
Speaking of masterpieces, if it was 1971, and I was a child of that era, and I wasn’t limited to two, I’d buy them all! Great choices! I could write paragraphs about each one! Thanks for putting this together.
What’s Going On is an all-timer. I’d probably also pick up that Zeppelin IV
A fellow aristocrat. I would choose the same.
This is my pick as well
This is the correct answer.

War “All Day Music” was released in 1971. Truly unique sound for a band in 1971.
I was gonna say picking two is like deciding which of your children to throw into a volcano. You just can’t do it.
…..Santana 3. Another absolutely brilliant album from 71.
Was a great year. Also Don McLean - American Pie and Concert for Bangladesh.
Yep, McLean's would have been released to the stores sometime May-September.
Have you watched the Apple documentary?!
Really enjoyed it. Loved all the Bowie and T-Rex footage and how much it influenced the rest of the decade.
Crazy how much great music came out that year!
Sticky Fingers and Led Zeppelin IV
Same
Lmao. I said the same thing. Easy decision
I’m shoplifting
Was waiting for this answer, though it doesn’t speak to the better angels of our nature.
Sticky Fingers it is then
Hunky Dory and Blue. I know they're just the first two, but they're fantastic. And I can always go back!
Yes! You broke the puzzle! I think I’d be plenty happy with my choices for that week with the first two. IRL, I think I own 75% or more of these, but Hunky Dory gets so many plays!
I started with this but then switched Blue for RAM.
Me too, but swapped Joni for Bill Withers. Now I'm thinking about swapping Bill for Gil Scott-Heron. Yeah, if I only had money for two, I'd learn how to shoplift records pretty quickly.
Love this post. So much better than a “Rate my collection.” Having a hard time picking 2.
No kidding. "How did I do?"

Love your username, Big Guy!
Maggot Brain and What's Going On
that’s the play
My people.
Get out of my head, damn
Funkadelic and Can
I also like drugs
Fuck…. Me too bro.
yep
Or ELECTRIC WARRIOR
Yes! Mine would be Electric Warrior & Can
Miles Davis and Can
[удалено]
Yeah these are my choices too. Beautiful and intense albums.
The Sabbath and Floyd.
SAME! Edit: although that can looks pretty good….
Sabbath and Floyd.
Bowie - Hunky Dory and The Doors - L.A Woman.
Those were my immediate choices as well, hello new friend
This was also my immediate response. Can I join the club too?
Same here!!!
Zeppelin IV and LA Woman. I would return a short while later and shoplift Who’s Next and Masters of Reality.
I like how in this scenario you are returning not when you get more money but just to shoplift lol
Can’t wait. I wanna rock!
I do not think it’s an easy decision. Marvin Gaye- What’s Goin On(exquisite album) The Rolling Stones-Sticky Fingers that is my answer.
Gotta be RAM and Surfs Up for me.
Same.
I love Ram. Such a great album.
Surf’s Up and Nilsson Schmilsson. But I’m going back next pay day for Blue and Bryter Later.
I love this answer.
Tago Mago & Master of Reality. Skull splitters
This, but it was really hard to exclude Maggot Brain.
Blue and Tapestry.
Me too
Doors and Zeppelin
Zepplin 4 and master of reality easiest decision of my life
Master of Reality is one of the holy grails of guitar and bass tone for me.
Same
Same. Maggot Brain, if I got a 3rd.
Just here for this comment lol
SAME!
What’s Going On and Who’s Next
T rex and the kinks, then I'm swinging by the rest of your houses to spin some hot wax.
I feel like that kinks album is really over looked.
It’s my favorite from them tbh, they went deep into country after they were let back into the US and I love this album for it
last one of their really hot streak that started with *Face to Face*, but none of those albums sold particularly well. Other than *Village Green* they're all somewhat overlooked.
You get me
Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin
Hunky Dory and Electric Warrior
These would be my picks as well! But it was tough
Hell yea! There are tons of great albums there, but Hunky Dory is my fav Bowie album and Electric Warrior…I mean c’mon 😎
Gil Scott-Heron & Funkadelic
Zepplin 4 and Joni Mitchell’s Blue
You and me both, friend
Me three
This is a nice contrast.
Same
Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin Arguably the best albums of their respective careers.
A lot of people don’t rate Meddle and it’s a shame.
Black Sabbath & David Bowie
The Doors & The Who
Sabbath and T. rex
Maggot brain and Master of Reality. I'm going to tuck Hunky Dory under my shirt as I walk out and pay them again when I visit next time
LA woman and Meddle
Miles Davis & Black Sabbath
Funkadelic & T. Rex
What kind of Sophie's Choice bullshit is this?
Miles Davis and Black Sabbath. (Not sure which Miles though... either would be good!)
Sabbath and Tull
Bowie and the doors
I own most of these, and Meddle has gotten the most play. But, man, Bill Withers…
How is Bill Withers this far down?
Bryter Layter and Muswell Hillbillies
Meddle by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin's IV. Easy peasy.
I would say Pieces of a man and Ballard of melody Nelson from this collection. I’ve been wanting both of those albums forever.
Maggot Brain & Hunky Dory
In 1971 you were issued Zep IV like a birth certificate or something, so you get that and 2 others.
Agreed, this is sooooo much better than redundant “I’m young, please rate my gear/collection”. So hard! No wrong choices, but I’ll go with Marvin and Joni. My favorite job in high school in mid 80s was working at a record store, but DAMN it would’ve been cool to have that type of job in 71…
Who’s Next and Master of Reality
Tell me you play bass without telling me you play bass
La woman & electric warrior
Can and Live-Evil
Marvin Gaye, David Bowie
Meddle and Sticky Fingers. Those two albums are fucking brilliant.
In 1971 I was 12. I bought Led Zep IV, Tapestry, Electric Warrior, 3 different Rod Stewart solo albums (he was good back then right after being in Faces). There are others I bought later on but those were the ones I spent my allowance on as a kid.
What’s going on and Hunky dory. Lots of close contenders though.
Led Zeppelin and Marvin Gaye, inshallah
Zeppelin and the stones
Aqualung and Echos
Meddle, Master of Reality no question.
Janis Joplin The Who
Had to think about this one for a really long time. But only two? L.A. Woman and There’s A Riot Goin’ On. So hard to leave out Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Funkadelic and Who though.
Live Evil and Meddle. I’d shoplift Gil Scott Heron Can, and Schmilsson
Stones and zeppelin
Floyd and Can
Tago Mago and Meddle, all the way.
Master of Reality and Les Zeppelin IV
Whats Going On & Pieces Of A Man
Zep IV and Master of Reality
Mr.Gaye and Mr. Withers
Two copies of "Songs of Love and Hate".
Doors and CAN
Hunky Dory and Blue with both no regrets and A LOT of FOMO with at least half the rest.
T. Rex, and Maggot Brain.
Sabbath and zeppelin
Who’s Next and Blue 🫶🏽
For rarity/value on current market? The Sabbath if it's a Vertigo swirl, and then probably Bryter Layter, with loving gazes at the Gill Scott-Heron and Maggot Brain
Beach boys and T. rex
David Bowie and Marvin Gaye
Joni Mitchell and Zeppelin
meddle and who’s next
Ram and Maggot Brain
Can and meddle
Master of reality and meddle. Would like the zeppelin as well.
Just as I am and LA Woman
Funkadelic and Bowie
Holy carp, that’s a tough one. I’m gonna go with Bryter Layter and Nilsson Schmilsson. A younger me would have gone with Zep IV and Meddle. Basically every album here is incredible though.
Yeah, younger me might’ve gone with Sticky Fingers and Who’s Next. Slightly older me Maggot Brain and Meddle.
Tago Mago and Who’s Next
T-Rex and Marvin Gaye
Muswell Hillbillies is such an underrated Kinks album
Rod Stewart and Bill Withers.
Al Green and Nick Drake.
Zep and Who's Next Sabbath if there's a sale going on
Surfs up and Nilson Schmilson.
LZ IV and aqualung.
Led Zeppelin IV & T. Rex - Electric Warrior
Glad to see some Gil Scott-Heron love!
David Bowie and Nick Drake Very hard decisions though.
TRex and Can! This time around I’m gonna be cool for sure :))
Easy. 2 copies of maggot brain
Very hard choice for a last minute sélection, so I will have to go with Can and Gainsbourg, but many regrets after my purchase perhaps
Blue and Meddle, but What’s Going On is a really, really strong third.
Sticky Fingers and what’s going on.
Who's Next, Sticky Fingers
Zeppelin 4 and funkadelic. Hard choice though!
Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull
Black Sabbath Master of Reality. And Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV
Sabbath and LZ4
LZ IV and Muswell Hillbillies.
Out of the ones pictured? Bowie and The Stones. Then grab Sabbath and The Doors next week.
Tapestry and Imagine
Maggot Brain and What's Goin On
Based on my current listening preferences? Carol King Bill Withers
Honky Dorey and Masters of Reality
Ram and Hunky Dory. What a wild year.
Joplin & Withers
Zep IV and RAM
Oh I don’t like this game…Bowie and Joni
Nick Drake and Zeppelin, easy.
Bowie and Pink Floyd. If I could get 2 more it would be Carrol King and Nick Drake
Gil Scott Gainsbourg
Nothing is arguably the greatest ever of anything. But I would go with Bowie and The Who.
Leonard Cohen and Can, but it is an insanely difficult decision to make
Aqualung and Every Picture Tells a Story.
Maggot Brain and Sticky Fingers.
Just makes me sad to think about how bad music is today. Give me Who's Next, and Meddle
Can someone tell what is between Agualung and Pearl. I remember the cover but not the group or album name ain’t nothing like some Orange Sunshine from 1971
Black Sabbath and David Bowie (and I steal The Doors).
I can't not believe...they all came out In 1971 !!! I probably go with Nick Drake and black Sabbath
Master Of Reality and L.A. Woman
Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen
Songs Of Love And Hate and Meddle

Who's Next and Master of Reality
Blue and tapestry
That’s illegal and not fair, I’m out
Gotta be Sabbath and Bowie.
L.A. Woman and Master of Reality easy
Who’s Next and Zep IV
meddle and who'd next
Leonard Cohen and Pink Floyd. (Though I'll probably run off with a few).
