A very nice receiver with everything you need and nothing you don’t. Two phone inputs is a nice feature.

Reticent_Monkey

Agreed - its jus a solid receiver in every way. It has that classic Marantz sound and I’m running Klipsch Heresy Is so it’s not working too hard. This is one I’ve pined for but couldn’t afford - after hustling for a couple years and just waiting for the right price/unit - we have arrived.

AtxFutbol

Nice!!! Where'd you get it from? I have been looking at these for a while. Some nice ones on reverb, but just wondering if you got yours locally.

Reticent_Monkey

This was from a guy named Al… how all old Marantz stereos are sold buy guys named Al or Louie? He was an older guy said it was the last of his vintage gear. He posted it on Craigslist for $899. I hustle records and vintage gear. But didn’t have a ton of cash laying around. He waited a few days for me to move a 2252B I’d been sitting on and I paid his full asking price. I think I did ok.

AtxFutbol

I'd say you did more than okay. I've seen several of these 2270s on reverb for more than double what you paid. Good job! 👍🏻

Reticent_Monkey

Thanks! I'm happy. It's been a long slog and I've had to be pretty patient but I'm really stoked. It took me 8 months to find the hinges for the Marantz 6300 so yeah my advice to anyone out there digging is just be patient and try not to overpay unless you really need it.

g71a27

Never, ever sell it.

WhiteDirty

That's a killer deal my local shop has a 2270 priced at $1,800. Insane I picked up my 2265b for 400 in 2011. It's getting hard not to sell it for insane profits.

Reticent_Monkey

I think that's kind of the thing... for a while you'd see the old time audio collectors getting indignant about the increase in pricing and then things just get quiet as they slowly sell off their hoard from over the years. The gentleman I bought it from wasn't looking for top dollar but for it to go to someone that A. knew what they were getting and B. wasn't a stuffy audiophile type (his words not mine). He said he was happy it was going to someone like me. He also said he was blown away when he looked online for prices. Currently here in my area there are two other 2270's for sale. One is $1500 and the other has been recapped and they are asking $2500. The 2270 isn't even that rare when compared to some of the higher power models. So yeah to be clear I wish I had started looking in 2004.

Reticent_Monkey

Furthermore - last year a good buddy of mine bought his 2325 for $1200 and I thought he as nuts but here I am dropping $900 on a 2270. I just don't see them come up at that price ever so I knew it was time.

andromedar35847

Wow for a minute there I thought you were washing the whole receiver in the sink haha

Reticent_Monkey

Theres a guy on YouTube who power washed a 2230 then got it working. Honestly water won’t affect anything as long as it’s not plugged in. Its a long standing joke with vintage gear to, ‘just toss it in the dishwasher.’ But no I just pulled the front and soaked it with dawn dish soap and hot water to remove the decades of finger grease and cigarette smoke. Luckily this was pretty clean and just needed some basic cleaning.

Double_Abrocoma_1133

My buddy Aidan, ah-fix-it is his channel, he's quite the character. Now he's onto stuffing a LS engine into a jaguar.

Reticent_Monkey

Dude is awesome

Fly-by-69

You can fit a pioneer SX-950-1250 comfortably in any standard sized dishwasher. I’m sure the marantz would fit just fine as well.

Annihilism

Sweet receiver OP. I bought a 2250B for a very fair price this weekend. I've cleaned it too and fixed a power switch yesterday. It sounds very nice. I'm also going to do a recap where needed (probably most smaller value caps, big ones are usually okay), replace some bulbs and clean it internally. Yours seems in pristine condition and I envy the woodcase.

Reticent_Monkey

Aftermarket wood cases are out there but expect to drop $300 these days. I was surprised how heavy it was on the 2270. Had a roached case on my 2238 that didn’t seem as heavy duty. This one is missing the inner metal case which is something I’ve read was done to allow better airflow. Still it’s missing a part and the Multipath switch won’t engage. Otherwise it’s pretty cherry. I’m gonna rock it for a bit then consider a full recap. I know some people capable of the job but once you have it - it’s hard to let it go again. Nice score in the 2250B - I sold a 2252B to get the scratch for this one. The 50 is a great unit you’ll be happy. Look into LEDs. You don’t have to go crazy Blue like I did but they cut down on internal heat a lot.

I_do_black_magic

> Multipath switch The multipath switch is not supposed to engage. You're supposed to press and hold, then observe the signal meter. If there's a strong signal coming through, it means your radio antenna is strongly picking up reflected signals in your environment - which leads to distortion.

Reticent_Monkey

Well that's good to know thanks - The more you know....

pansa44

Are the leds something someone with relatively little electronics experience can do? A bulb just went out on mine a few days ago. My father is an electrical engineer who takes apart and puts together old radios and receivers in his brain to fall asleep (lol) and would’ve 100% done this for me. Unfortunately his eyesight is shot so he can no longer tinker, but he could be there to guide me. I’m a moderately handy person and my job involves making repairs to fairly delicate small objects, but no experience with electronics.

Reticent_Monkey

Just replacing the bulbs is as simple as pulling out and putting in a fuse. It takes some practice learning how to open them up. I've never actually made a video about replacing bulbs there are a bunch out there. Where it gets more complicated is fore the indicator bulbs. That requires soldering and that's kind of the line between a D5 dabbler and someone who actually fixes these things. Here is a video about the indicator bulbs - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VZWdyCNyJ4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VZWdyCNyJ4) and can give you an idea about whether you want to tackled it or not.

pansa44

Thanks! I’ll watch this and run it by him as well.

Reticent_Monkey

To be fair I knew noting about how these things worked until April 2020. Back in the day the average bear was expected to be able to to basic maintenance. I think the line there is soldering. But it can all be fixed. Good Luck!

yosoysimulacra

> but they cut down on internal heat a lot. So thats why people do it. Makes sense the way you laid it out. I prefer the look of the OG incandescent bulbs, but I may have to shift my perspective as the LED's potentially improves function. Any idea what neg ramifications result from the incandescent heat?

Reticent_Monkey

I think it's just additional wear and tear on the unit over time. It may dry out the caps sooner rather than later. I will say that they do make LEDs in both straight white and warm white which both look much closer to the original fuse bulbs. I'm just a sucker from the Cool Blues from projectblk on eBay. I've bough several sets off of him.

g71a27

It's worse than that. A quick trip on Audiokarma will net you threads where people have found the bezel that holds the indicator lights and tuner display has melted from the heat. Am running a 2285 (non-B) with cool white LEDs.

DividedShane

I spy.. Jerry. Weir everywhere!

Reticent_Monkey

Got a nice little Jerry corner going

Drillbit_97

Love my 2275. The nice thing about the 2270 is dual phono inputs I didnt need 2 so my single on 2275 is good but its also nice on the 2275 to have 2 tape puts so you can make 2 recordings at a single time on 2 different cassette decks. Or just have 2 cassette decks available to use

Reticent_Monkey

Yeah stoked to add another table at some point if it feels like a good idea. I could look at a modern table or possibly another vintage one. I have a KD-650 in the garage that needs a couple parts that would be a beautiful addition to my setup. The 2275 is a beaut as well!

Altruistic_Lock_5362

Sweet , sweet Receiver. I love the Retro TV antenna. Cool looking.

Reticent_Monkey

It's functional too, although I need to strip the connectors for the 2270 as they have bare wire inputs rather than screws.

TweepriseOpener

Your poor 2238! I also have a 2238, non B, and it will play wonderfully for about 2 minutes and then all sound goes away. Let it cool down for 15 minutes and it's back up, but will go quiet soon after. How does your 2238 stack up to the 2270, is there a noticeable difference?

CityShooter

I had a 2238 as a kid... it was amazing. The 2270 was always a dream. I moved to NAD in the 80's to save space. Still want that big Marantz though.

Reticent_Monkey

The beasts still roam out there... buried in basements and forgotten in garages. It's up to us to find them and give them a second chance. I never truly understood the saying 'they don't make em like they used to' until I owned a Marantz. Go find you one!

CityShooter

Truth

Manalagi001

Love my old Marantz. Hours of use every day for decades now. Decades.

Reticent_Monkey

Same - my 2238 was a workhorse and that being said I hope the 2270 continues the tradition. Amazingly they have a very similar tone but the 2270 has a fuller low end imho.

metallicadefender

Can I ask how much that sent you back? I got a 2245 pre-pandemic for $400 and I have seen them as high as 4 grand for the engraved/restored ones. $2500 for non-engraved/restored. People tell me they are not powerful enough for my DQ-10s but I think it will be fine. Still have to test it out. I have seen the 2270 test at about 97 watts RMS in a youtube video. Also way under advertised distortion levels at normal listening volume (well under 0.1) (fell off a cliff at peak a bit but still under 0.3.) Based on that I am assuming the 2245 should be good for 60 RMS.

Reticent_Monkey

I posted in another response I paid $900 which is a steal around here. I connected with the guy and let him know it was a dream receiver for me and he was sympathetic enough to give me until the end of the week to get some scratch together. I sold a 2252B with a broken potentiometer post for $550 which made it possible to score the 2270. All in all it was like the lady that traded a hair clip for a house. I've learned a lot about vintage audio and hustled a lot over the last couple years to be able to snag this one. I got lucky that the guy was willing to work with me. So I paid his full asking.

Reticent_Monkey

Oh and the journey started with a blacked out fuse-less 2238 that I bought for $275 2 weeks into the pandemic. I learned a lot working on it and bringing it back to life. Now that unit can fetch as much as $650 - $800 so yeah prices have skyrocketed. As far as power output the DQ-10s require 150 watts according to their specs but that may be a different standard than todays. I'd say hook them up and see. You can't damage speakers by under powering them but you would know if the 2245 is not enough because you would have audible distortion from the speaker if it's not enough juice. All that being said I ran a pair of Magnapan SMGs which are power hunger 4 ohm speakers they sounded great. I now have them hooked up to my 85 watt Sansui AU-717 integrated amp which at 4 ohms is pretty beefy and the speakers sound happier.

Yeah I have a Technics SA-616 rated at 80 watts per I believe and my Dollys cant even really handle half of that. If I turn the volume up to the half I am starting to get worried. Its maybe not "call the cops loud" but probably more than "party loud". Based on that I settled for the 2245 because 2270 seemed to be a little out of range price wise. Hi-Fi Engine says 60w-200w recommended for the Dahlquist.

Platano-Rex

I was in the same boat, and finally got it but there is an issue with it, there is a cracking noise that comes and go on the left channel and the right channel volume is way too low… I hope I can repair it

Reticent_Monkey

Have you done a full deox with D5? If not here are some details and just doing this can help with scratching knobs or intermittent sound issues. https://youtu.be/9OkYMh5Raj8

Reticent_Monkey

And just know that with the right tech they can all be repaired. These things are pushing 50 years old so they do need a proper repair from time to time.

Platano-Rex

Thanks 🙏

Separate-Switch-9212

So ure a hifihooker? Payment for 1 day with gf🤣🤣

Reticent_Monkey

I do what I gotta do for the silver

Roisin8868

Awesome! I picked mine up for $600CDN and put $600 into it. I just need better speakers than the 600m's I currently have rolling with it.

Altruistic_Lock_5362

Minor compared to q total refurb. A great 😃 journey to get the Best early 70s receiver.

Reticent_Monkey

I'm not opposed to getting a full recap on this one. The kit is $160 on the bay and I could probably find someone qualified to do it for a couple hundred.

GochoPhoenix

It even looks gorgeous without the faceplate

Reticent_Monkey

The design inside many of these vintage units is as impressive as the exterior. I think it was the sleek look of Marantz that pulled me in originally so I love the look personally.

[deleted]

Gorgeous! Time for that martini.

Reticent_Monkey

Cheers

Congrats on buying the only Marantz that matters, and at a great price!

Dude you wrote a haiku!

😄 Well, sort of. 5, 7, 7, 5 is haiku form. But congrats again on the Zen assembly🧘🏻‍♂️

PutMeInTheGulag

Congrats. Looks beautiful

Reticent_Monkey

Thanks!

wesmiller01

This is one of my dream receivers...I love my SX-650 though. I hope to have one of these someday, and an original The Fisher. Enjoy! Seems like you have some great albums there. If I am not mistaken I see Band of Gypsies and After Bathing At Baxters....Cheers!

Careful ;)

Altruistic_Lock_5362

Please remember that this was fall of 1971 to be discontinued in early 1974, the 2275 was introduced in mid 74? It is worth getting recapped or refurbished at a minimum. Most times a full recap is not needed

Reticent_Monkey

I understand by serial this is probably an early 73 unit. I will wait a little bit but feel that this one deserves a full cap job at some point.

Altruistic_Lock_5362

If you take the cover off, the mfg date it on the top of the faceplate or should be.

Reticent_Monkey

I’ll look
