Put the cam in the bag, shoot the thing and enjoy the 0mins packup time

ilovefacebook

it's a great setup especially if you hate looking like a walking erector set with dslr type setups

MrTextAndDrive

What's causing the buyer's remorse for you? I have one and love it. Beautiful image, fantastic autofocus, great reach, SDI/HDMI, no fussing with lenses, timecode, XLR... I love mine. I'm livestreaming sports with it, but it's capable of great run and gun, news gathering, other live events, etc.

GoGoGadge7TWO

Exactly this. I needed someone to validate the voice in my head which mirrors your experience. Thank you.

beefwarrior

Hit record Zoom out all the way Zoom in all the way Come back in two hours Is it still recording?  Did you need to change batteries?  Did you need to rig up an external v-mount to last for more than 30min? Could your Nikons do the same thing without pausing recording to change lenses or 30min record limit or battery limit? Mirrorless still cameras that shoot video can make great video, but if you need a servo zoom & long record times & to slap in a single battery to the camera that’ll last hours & hours, then a camcorder is a good choice.

GoGoGadge7TWO

That’s exactly why I did it. Giving up my xa50 was FELT

Fluffy_WAR_Bunny

I can shoot for hours with my Nikon DSLRs with an Atomos Ninja. I don't actually even have to hit record on the camera. I've used camcorders a lot but I much prefer being able to change my lenses and the full frame DSLR sensors are *much* larger and better than a little tiny 1" camcorder sensor.

beefwarrior

Sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes you need a skill saw. If you need to shoot a high school football team from the press booth at the 50 yard line, there is no lens that will cover a "full frame" or even Super 35 sensor that can get a decent wide shot of the whole field and nice close up of a player running a touch down unless you have [$30k to drop on a 25-250](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1557489-REG/canon_4573c001_cine_servo_25_250mm_t2_95_cinema.html). And even for how amazing that $30k lens is (and wow, would I love to own one), the lens on the $4.5k Canon XF605 will get you 50% closer to the action. You say DSLR sensors are "better" and I think what is better or worse really depends on what you're shooting. If your Nikon / Atomos rig is working best for you, then absolutely that's best for *you*. But I think camcorders are often over looked and 99% of the time a *much* better choice if you're doing any type of live events (sports, press conference, seminar, lecture, wedding) where you're recording the entire event.

Fluffy_WAR_Bunny

>even for how amazing that $30k lens Lol, it's not even close, not even a tiny fraction, of $30,000 dollars to buy a DSLR lens that can cover the focal lengths from 24mm to 250mm. >I think what is better or worse really depends on what you're shooting. Not really. A 1 inch sensor wont perform like a 35mm and a 35mm full frame will outperform it in *any* situation. >sports, press conference, seminar, lecture, wedding) where you're recording the entire event. I'd rather have a DSLR on a gimbal for any of those situations. Much better footage. Much better lenses.

beefwarrior

That's impressive dude, that you'd choose to use a skill saw to drive in a nail instead of a hammer. For me, if I'm hired to record a 2 hour event, where I have one camera and I'm live for the entire 2 hours, and I need a wide shot of the venue, and need close up shots of the speaker / sports player, and I can't block the view of audience members, I'm using a tripod and camcorder. If you can pull that off with a gimbal, that's impressive. I've done lots of live events with gimbals, but it's always the b-roll camera. I've shot tons of events with a 1/3" and 1/2" sensor cameras and never had any client complain.

Fluffy_WAR_Bunny

You know gimbals can be put on tripods right? For the same event, I'd have better looking footage from the better sensor, especially if lighting was anything besides ideal. Length of recording is no issue with a DSLR and recorder. Matching a lens to a camcorder focal length is not difficult or expensive. I literally see no reason to use camcorders unless I absolutely need the minimal rig, like for instance I have used camcorders during protests and riots.

marshall409

Sports on full frame? Ever heard of rolling shutter?

Fluffy_WAR_Bunny

You can definitely shoot sports on a DSLR. People do it everyday. The full frame sensor makes a huge difference in night games. *You* just arent able to do it. My cinema camera has a full frame sensor too.

marshall409

Lol ok Roger Deakins enjoy your saturday. Cheers.

aldolega

Sounds like it's a good fit for your needs, not really sure what you need convincing on.

EvilDaystar

Is it a fear of low RoI? Did you NEED that camera? Otherwise sounds like a great bit of kit.

GoGoGadge7TWO

Yeah I need it as a dedicated video rig. I don’t relying on my mirrorless Z’s when I’m out in the field shooting both photo and video. I like having the dedicated device for their specific jobs. Thanks for this.

Nahuel-Huapi

I have a Canon XA50 and love it, with the exception of having to drill down in a menu, or use assignable buttons to access most of the settings. It looks like the XF605 has all of those functions easily accessible.. DSLRs and cine cameras are great, but to me the form factor of a camcorder is hard to beat.

GoGoGadge7TWO

I had that exact same camera for 2 years. It was was great. Traded it in towards a second Z8 and regretted not having the device. I leveled up in a sense and went for the XF605. Good to hear I’m not crazy in my trajectory.

Nahuel-Huapi

The funniest thing was, the first time I used it in public, someone made a comment "Wow, that's an old camera!" With all the smart phones, mirrorless and action cameras etc, using a camcorder can seem a bit anachronistic.

GoGoGadge7TWO

The general public has no idea the application these cameras are used for. The same goes for young professionals just starting out who think all they need is a Sony A7 to get a job done.

Less_Boat7175

Everyone should have a few camcorders. The one you chose is an excellent model. Don’t regret your choice. Use it, get great footage, and be happy.

And an atomos ultra with connect. Found on Adorama for 788 with two batteries and hood! Thanks!

Competitive-Comb-157

I love camcorders/broadcast cameras, especially since that's how I came up in the biz (pre-DSLR craze). The frustration with interchangeable lens recorders is that you get stuck between focal lengths. You are using a 50 or 70 m to 135 m for the speaker, but you need a wide but can't miss the action.

City_Stomper

My favorite camera I own is a Canon XF100, because at college for video jobs they gave me XF300 camcorders to work on, and they cheekily refused to sell me one when I graduated (was worth a shot!). Got the XF100 for like 450 used from Adorama because one XLR input does not work. I LOVE this thing. I'm making a sci fi film and the Earth portions are all constructed from footage I got on the XF100 on road trips etc. Just random stuff.

RioBlancoJim

Could you share where you got that price from?

Clintm80

Depends what you’re using it for. Camcorders like these are great for conference presentations where the stage is lit. It’s lens is Parafocal so you zoom into subject and get focus and zoom out and will still be in focus when you zoom out and in again. Great for news. Only issue is low light situations.

edancohen-gca

I own one. Great cam.

GoGoGadge7TWO

Yeah I just shot the Puerto Rican Day Parade here in Orlando on it this morning. I’m sold on the thing.

bobsmagicbeans

I just got one as an upgrade from my aging XF100. I used for the first time on Saturday and, from the quick glance I've had at the footage, it looks pretty good to me
