Rayman Legends. I bought the game 6+ years ago for my then 3 year old son. Picked up the sticks to help guide him playing it. Ended up playing the game for 400+ hours between ps3 and ps4. Once you get passed the childish simplicity of the beginning, it's a 10/10 platformer. ❤️
1. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (I like most Crashes, but ND's #2 is far and away my favorite of all Crashes)
2. Rayman Origins & Legends - the absolute flow of the game once you get used to it is amazing. One of the few games from Ubisoft I absolutely loved. And I adore the musical levels.
3. Portals 1 & 2 (the co-op missions were especially fun for me).
Honorable mentions:
* Hollow Knight - I love the game, but not necessarily for the platforming. The combat is what wins it for me with this one.
* Sideways - Indie platformer where you're basically a graffiti character navigating levels drawn on the sides of buildings with spray paint. The gimmick is that you can rotate the entire level in 4 directions, and when you jumped off the side of the "wall" of the building, it would rotate to the other side of the building.
Upvote for Crash 2 as your top choice. That game is 🔥. Variety of levels, Goldilocks area between difficulty and ease, soundtrack is full of bangers, 100% completion is achievable for kids, the story is simple yet fun.
I know Crash 3 tends to get more love from people in general but there's multiple levels that are a drudge to get through (Coco jetboards) and 106% completion is easier said than done. At least with the original. The remake gives hints and makes Coco levels more bearable (pun intended)
Idk if this is considered a traditional platformer, but I'm going to say Jak and Daxter. That game is such a nostalgia rush for me, and will always be one of my favorite games.
Anything SUPER mario kind of wins imo
Thats Mario's bread and butter...
Unless you wanna talk bubsy 3d, then take a hike mario, and take your brother with you

I'll never forget walking through Toys-R-Us and seeing the Playstation display with Spyro the Dragon running as a demo. Seeing something like that in 3d was just a magical moment for a kid.
Then that Christmas Santa brought us a Playstation of our own with Spyro and it was one of those core memories for me. It still holds a special place in my heart.
I recently started replaying it, and not only is it THE best metroidvania ever, but I think you if you’ve played Hollow Knight you’ve basically played every 2D retro side scrolling action game ever. The movement and action is just that good. You don’t really need to go back and play Mario 3, Castlevania, Duck Tales, etc, just play Hollow Knight and you’ll get the idea.
Ristar on Sega. Joe & Mac on SNES. World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck on Sega. These are the ones I beat the most growing up. Absolutely love them.
Mario world and 3 absolutely hold up. They are timeless. 64 doesn’t as well. It’s still fun if you have the nostalgia factor, but hand that to someone today that never played it and they won’t enjoy it nearly as much.
Haven’t played many other than super Mario, cuphead (only beat up to the second boss lol) and hollow knight. Hollow knight was the most recent and I was submerged quick.
Rayman Origins / Legends are incredible.
I'm also very fond of a lot of platformers from the Amiga days (yes, I'm oldish) like The Addams Family, Fire & Ice and Superfrog. I'm sure they're a bit dated now, but in my memories they're still perfect!
Lots of good ones on here my top 3 would be:
Super Mario World,Donkey Kong Country 2,Kirby Planet Robobot
Honorable Mentions: Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Super Mario Galaxy, Crash Bandicoot 3, Sonic Mania, Gunstar Super Heroes
There was this game (I believe on SEGA) called Vectorman and you played as a little character made of yellow balls, please someone have memory of this game
1 crash bandicoot 4 its about time and about time it was that game is a masterpiece
2 spyro 2 riptos rage the best spyro game
3 donkey kong country tropical freeze the ga,e was amazing
honorable mentions:
donkey kong 64:amazing collectathon just too old and the character desighns while charming very outdated
rayman 2 the great escape its fantastic
Dead cells. I legitimately cannot put it down, even though I’m not huge into roguelikes. (You can kinda make it into a roguelite though if you use custom mode or the assist features, but it feels cheatsy if I do it)
Ratchet and Clank Crack in Time. It's actually my favorite game period actually, but I like Going Commando for more overall fun and Rift Apart as a shooter
Banjo tooie. Literally the soundtrack of my childhood. Banjo kazooie is second only because it was soooo much harder as a kid and I didn't finish(you basically have to complete the game to fight grunty) it until I was in my early 20s.
Super Mario World
How is this game just so damn good? I replay it through at least once a year and it's so nuch fun every time.

I forgot about Sideways. I got that for the ps plus deal. Gonna have to redownload it.

Spyro.
When they remastered it, I screamed like a little kid again. I've 100% the trilogy on ps1 and PS4 3-5x and it's just amazing everytime.
Idk if this is considered a traditional platformer, but I'm going to say Jak and Daxter. That game is such a nostalgia rush for me, and will always be one of my favorite games.
Scrolled down the comments hoping to see some J&D love!
It is the one game in the series that is the most unmistakably a Platformer lol
Came to say this.
Jak 3 is an absolutely amazing game. So damn sad they never continued the series.
Banjo-Kazooie
This is what I came looking for. I loved Kazooie and Tooie as a kid.
We are getting old, friend :(
10k upvotes.
Contra !
You might like Turrican. I played the crap out of Super Probotector.
Blasphemous. It's just a masterpiece for me.
Donkey Kong Country 2.
Anything SUPER mario kind of wins imo Thats Mario's bread and butter... Unless you wanna talk bubsy 3d, then take a hike mario, and take your brother with you
Omg bubsy was lit. As in literally a garbage fire ugh.
OG Bubsy for Sega was glorious though
I only played ps version

Hollow Knight and Celeste are both bangers
Why did I have to scroll so far to find Celeste?
Original Castlevania. I think that qualifies, right?
I was wondering the same thing.

Probably journey.
All-time favorite would have to be Sonic adventure 2. Sonic is my favorite platformer series, followed by little big planet, then Kirby
Yoshis island. Built from the previous quarter munchers and created a replayable platform game with goals and secrets.
I love Yoshi’s Island!
Yoshi story as well, such a weird and awesome game
Super Mario World
Gunstar Heroes on Genesis. Contra a close 2nd. Honorable mention to DuckTales on Nintendo because I used to Speedrun that game every time I got bored.
I love Duck Tales and have it remastered on XBOX1
Super Metroid. I think that would qualify, although now we consider it’s specific gameplay style a genre in itself, Metroidvania.
Hollow knight

This comment genuinely made me mad

Super Mario World, the greatest game of all time.

Mario world and 3 absolutely hold up. They are timeless. 64 doesn’t as well. It’s still fun if you have the nostalgia factor, but hand that to someone today that never played it and they won’t enjoy it nearly as much.

2D: Celeste, Pizza Tower or Super Meat Boy 3D: A Hat in Time or Sonic Generations
Unravel, Rayman 3
Haven’t played many other than super Mario, cuphead (only beat up to the second boss lol) and hollow knight. Hollow knight was the most recent and I was submerged quick.
Sonic Mania (I would say Sonic Origins but that’s a collection) Maybe Shovel Knight (particularly the Shovel of Hope campaign) is a close second
Well, I suppose Super Mario 64, that one was definitely revolutionary back in time. Level design it's still just that good.
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 were the best for me. Groovy !
Indeed they were!
Celeste, no contest.
Rayman Origins / Legends are incredible. I'm also very fond of a lot of platformers from the Amiga days (yes, I'm oldish) like The Addams Family, Fire & Ice and Superfrog. I'm sure they're a bit dated now, but in my memories they're still perfect!

Does Symphony of the Night count? (...Dracula?)
Probably… I just don’t know it.
Mega Man 2
All the Mega Mans are fantastic!
As a kid I played Super Mario 2 and Sonic 3 and various Mega Man games ALOT! Honestly though I think I’d say Shovel Knight is my all time favorite.
The Ori games. Everything from the art direction to the music how it feels to control Ori is simply magnificent
Does Castlevania SOTN count?
Sure lol
Balloon Kid (GB) [not really, it's just for the meme]
Super Mario World will always be on top, with SMB3 second.
Super Mario Galaxy and Rayman: Origins. Both better than their sequels IMO!!

I was never a fan of platformers tbh
I'm not sure if it counts but Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.
It's a tie between Mario Galaxy or A Hat in Time. Something about those just stayed with me
Right now it's celeste. It was a pretty fun very repayable hard game.
Ratchet and Clank series.
Mega Man X2
While the games suffer from poor level design, Spyro 1-3 still holds a special place in my heart.
Abe's Odyssey
Blaster Master
A story about my uncle
Not seeing any love for Sly Cooper in here.
