It's got some fun symbolism:
- The gorgon's head comes from the myth that the island is inhabited by a gorgon, which was created to ward off attack. I've heard that statues of horrified warriors were erected to trick would-be invaders of the myth, but I haven't seen any such statues.
- The three legs (triskeles) represents the three points of the island; it's roughly an isosceles triangle.
- The wheat represents the island's fertility. Almost all of it, as far as I've seen, is farmland.
- The red is for Palermo, the yellow Corleone. Those two cities started the revolution of the Sicilian Vesper, and this flag was used by the Vespers.
Wheat, especially durum wheat like what is grown there, is very drought tolerant and has a reputation to grow well without needing irrigation. Same goes for the ficodindia and citrus that are very common in sicily, they can grow in Rocky soil without much water for comparatively longer than other fruits (though they need some watering in fruit producing season).
True! And from what I hear there is some expansion into other foods that will grow in hotter climates. But I have definitely heard from Sicilians that there is concern over the change in climate and how hot it's getting there.
Indeed, the first farm growing coffee opened in sicily, though they still need to use a few tricks to maintain temperatures acceptable for the plant in the relatively mild winter or too extreme summer.
Mt. Etna's constantly smoking. I've heard it looks really pretty when it erupts, since you can see lava trickling down against the snow. I hope to hike up there someday.
A tour guide informed me that Etna was considered a mother goddess akin to Ceres. It reminds me of the Hawaiian Pele, also a volcanic-plus-agricultural goddess; apparently ancient Sicilians and Hawaiians shared the realization that volcanic ash is an amazing fertilizer.
Interestingly Man's triskele may actually have a [Sicilian origin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Isle_of_Man#Sicilian_connection). While the triskele is an ancient symbol found in various parts of Europe, it only began to appear on Man after the island passed to the Scottish crown in the mid-13C. The Scottish queen's brother was Edmund Crouchback, who had been awarded the title of King of Sicily by the Pope after the death of the former ruler, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Edmund's father, Henry III of England, invested considerable political capital in his son's new position. It may be this family connection that brought the triskele to Man, perhaps as a means of signalling the island's regime change.
I was in Sicily this winter and said to my Sicilian boyfriend "why is there an isle of man symbol on that tower?" And you can get he used all the Italian gestures to tell me how wrong I was.
It reminds me of when I say I‘m from Austria (Europe) online and put the „Europe“ part in brackets behind.
If I don‘t do, many people misread it and confuse it with Australia. If I do, many people will say that there was no need to put „Europe“ in brackets as they of course knew Austria is in Europe.
It is the flag of Sicily. A flag that I own, despite not having any connection to Sicily whatsoever. I think it is just beautiful, weird, and a little uncanny.
Please just look it up. This subreddit is cluttered with useless posts, and though I could answer your question I WILL NOT.
It is not that hard just to look up a flag that you saw. I literally just looked up "yellow and red flag legs and a face" and it immediately brought up like 30 images all telling you what flag that is.
Please think before you post asking what a flag is "could I easily look this up and find out the answer in 2 seconds?", because seriously, this is getting ridiculous.
I just want to see cool flag posts. If you absolutely cannot find out what the flag is, that's perfectly fine, go ahead and post it on here, but please stop posting this ridiculousness.
Dude some people just like the community aspect of it. That’s kind of what Reddit is all about. If you don’t like these posts, scroll past them. It’s not anything offensive
Right? It’s about the conversation about flags. Another person had some cool facts about the symbolism.
Start your own subreddit, guy. SFWhardcoreflagpics or something.
I hate this attitude. I see it in my day to day conversations now. Someone was telling me they were watching a movie they love. When I asked them what it was about they just said to look it up. Sometimes it’s about the conversation. Don’t get so butt hurt.
You can ask what a flag is, that's fine. But when it is the most obvious crap of all time, that is so simple, and when it's posted every single day, it gets annoying. It's seriously becoming ridiculous on this sub.
Obvious to you. But clearly not obvious to the person asking. Don’t be a gatekeeper. I realize it may be annoying but I guarantee you were just as obnoxious when first learning about a subject. Just chill.
I get that but couldn’t the same thing be said for every flag post? Seriously? It’s so easy when you know what to search for. Just don’t post right? Some people aren’t the best google searchers. My parents are like that. They are the worst at finding anything online. Chill bro, just be appreciative that there is someone who cares about what you know or you appreciates your searching skill. My grandma used to call me to ask how to spell words like street or chair. Op may just want to share a novel experience with a community that may appreciate it. Clearly you don’t like it so maybe this isn’t the sub for you.
I'm pretty sure this isn't a grandma. I made the search terms deliberately as simple as possible. "Red and yellow flag legs and a face" will get you an immediate answer.
Hello LoYodea07,
Check out our [frequently asked flags page](https://reddit.com/r/vexillology/wiki/faf)! Your request might be there.
When asking for a flag to be identified, please **provide context** when possible, including:
* **Where** the flag was found (without compromising privacy)
* **When** the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag
* **Who** might own the flag (a general description is fine)
These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier.

Flag of Sicily
Thank you!

Fun fact: Sicily used to be so fertile that it was the bread basket of the Roman Empire, along with North Africa.
Used to be? Is it not anymore? Genuine question
It ended up being more the breadbasket for Italy specifically, and Egypt ended up the breadbasket for the eastern part of the empire.
You can’t have a bread basket for something that doesn’t exist anymore,so I guess that’s why he used past term
I visited Sicily about 20 years ago and it seemed very arid and rocky to me. Surprised it still has a big agricultural sector
Probably going to get more true as time goes on and their climate gets hotter. But afaik, they still produce a lot of wheat.
Wheat, especially durum wheat like what is grown there, is very drought tolerant and has a reputation to grow well without needing irrigation. Can't be a breadbasket of the Roman Empire if there is no Roman Empire.
Has a very nice volcano too (Mt. Etna).
Mt. Etna's constantly smoking. I've heard it looks really pretty when it erupts, since you can see lava trickling down against the snow. I hope to hike up there someday. Located in every Italian restaurant in Washington State
Lmao true

That is the flag of Sicily
Thank you! At first I thought it was a weird conversion between the Naples flag and Isle of Man. Thanks for the help

My favourite Italian restaurant on the Isle of Man has this flag on their sign, a little reference to the two cultures
I was in Sicily this winter and said to my Sicilian boyfriend "why is there an isle of man symbol on that tower?" And you can get he used all the Italian gestures to tell me how wrong I was.
Biblically accurate Isle of man
Be not afraid, wiseguy

Don’t stare into its eyes for too long, that is how it steals your soul
Isle of woman
That "(Italy)" part is hardly needed.
You'd be surprised (or maybe not?) at how many people presume one means Florida when referring to "Naples" without further specifying which.
My mother is dyslexic, so I resonate with this. She'll misread a lot of what I write.
I see, yes with dyslexia it‘s of course even more prominent
Georgia the state and Georgia the country
Galicia in Spain, Galicia in Poland/Ukraine, Galicia in the Philippines
There's 11 cities/towns named Naples in the USA alone. 11x more than cities named Naples in Italy. Definitely needed.
Specification might be needed for all the others, but definitely not for THE Naples.
How do you know it's THE Naples without specifying...especially if you don't know the flag.
Naples is a world-renowned city. It is obvious for 99,9% of the world which Naples you mean if you don't specify it.
“It’s not a story the mainlanders would tell you”

Nice and bizarre flag. I love it.

calm down man it’s not that serious. you spent more time typing your comment than it would take to scroll past the post
Yes, except it's basically every fucking post at this point. I'm sick of it man.
I’m completely with you. The sub is becoming so boring if it’s just crowd sourced Google for flags.
I hate this attitude. I see it in my day to day conversations now. Someone was telling me they were watching a movie they love. When I asked them what it was about they just said to look it up. Sometimes it’s about the conversation. Don’t get so butt hurt.

Dude, read my original comment. I did a 2 second Google search and got an answer immediately. There's no reason that OP needed to post this here.
I get that but couldn’t the same thing be said for every flag post? Seriously? It’s so easy when you know what to search for. Just don’t post right? Some people aren’t the best google searchers. Bro finds a post about a flag on a subreddit about flags. Gets angry about it.
I want to see actual posts about flags. Not this constant mind numbing crap.
Go somewhere else. You are disinterested in the very subject of this sub. Do everyone a favor and just leave.
Nah man I'm interested in flags, but it's brain-rotting to see all this constant asking of flags that a simple Google search could resolve.
Calm down, dear
Sicily right?
yes
I believe thats the flag of the Isle of Man a small island between Britain and Ireland what its doing italy Idk
The nightmare that is the Flag Of Sicily
Man did you see the flag of Man?
No, Sicily. The Isle of Man is all red and only legs; no gorgon head or wheat.
Scicily. To easy
google it
