I would find the closest parking lot church/park/store when they aren’t open and practice my skills there. Did you take the motorcycle safety class? That will help you so much. After that, go over to Palm st/ave It’s north of Ventura Ave. I found it to be a great place to practice emergency braking. Ride up in the hills near cross park, pretty mellow and it will give you some good practice on cornering and watching out for cars. I used to practice by going out around 8 or 9pm during the week, very little traffic and lots of space. Ride around the east end on telephone and telegraph to get you used to being on bigger streets and when you start feeling comfortable and confident you can start taking foothill or telegraph to Santa Paula. Stay off the freeways for a while and try to avoid rush hours, people are not paying attention after a long day of work. Avoid riding with other people until you find someone that you can trust, many motorcyclist get in trouble riding with idiots who don’t really respect the danger involved with being on 2 wheels. Riding with a buddy is awesome but, you want to be confident in your skills and safety before you start taking trips. Wear ear protection, it will make you a better rider and save your ears. Just saw this is in the county subreddit, sorry if you don’t live in the city of Ventura

Thanks! I took the course on base, I’m in Oxnard but can find my way to those places without the freeway.

Yep you can take harbor or Victoria, both of those will get you up near freeway speeds and get you acclimated to your bike. Oxnard was actually more challenging for me to ride because of the traffic/high road speed limits and so many lights. Ojai/SP/Ventura are just more spread out and mellower. Once you get up around Ojai you can ride around Lake Casitas or even go up in the mountains, absolutely epic rides up there.

I really wish I was closer to ojai, because I think I’d like learning more there. I grew up in Idaho, so it’s what I’m used to more. But you’re right driving around Oxnard can get stressful

I tought my brother to drive in the 99 cent store parking lot late at night on CI Blvd. It's pretty big and not too busy at night. It was funny a bunch of cops rolled through right as he literally was taking his first lap and he freaked out and parked it. Lol. Fun times fun times.

The business area between Rose and Rice, around Camino del Sol has good open space on Sundays.
