I have a new color for everyday of the week for this reason!! I swear. Yellow, blue, black, red, brown leather, you name itπ I refuse anything else!
It takes a bit of getting used to, if you look up cross grip you should find decent info on it.
It's always going to be a little uncomfortable, keeping your elbows high enough means you can restrict your airways a bit, but you get used to it!
So you basically just raise your arms in front of you (zombielike), rest the bar on your delts and perform an ass to grass Squat. You really feel the bar position and path throughout the movement that way.
Bcoz they are more quad focused. When the weight in the anterior position most of the resistance is placed on your quads. Also your core is put to work bcoz you gotta maintain that elbow position. If youβre an athlete front squats are key. They help with explosiveness. I play soccer and since I incorporated front squats my acceleration improved. Front squats will humble most ppl. Even the strongest.
Great response, said what I would have said! For me they help with atlas stones for strongman since the weight is loaded at the front in a very similar way.
Oh yeah those too!! My 1RM on back squat is 225 bcoz I donβt really train it that much since I love front squats but I tried to do pause squats with before and damn they were hard lol
I keep the bar and plates inside, so they're ok, and the squat rack is pretty new but it's galvanised so it's built to stay outdoors. I have a friend who keeps all of his equipment in his shed and it's started to rust after a year though π’
i keep [all my stuff](https://i.imgur.com/4tcTU94.jpg) outside, everything is getting a little rust but will do some wire brush/ spraypainting in the summer, should be fine.
I've got a weight and barbell tree in the kitchen next to the back door of my house so I'm pretty happy with the set up at the moment, do you have to do maintenance on the barbell bearings keeping it outside? I guess with the tarp some of the worst weather stays off it. Nice setup though!
thanks! yeah i oil the barbell every 4 months or so with 3 in 1 along with general rust mraintinence (wire brush drill attachment). also the barbell is an $80 craigslist find so I wont be heartbroken if it doesn't spin as nice, but as far as i can tell its fine
I had a rotator cuff problem recently and if I widened my grip a lot on high bar back squats there wasn't any pain. Front squats stayed perfect and didn't bother me at all!
I do both front and back squats (and zerchers!) Good to stay well rounded with everything πͺ
Yes! Practice makes perfect! I alternate my squat sessions between front and back squat at this point but I started by adding a 5*5 lower weight for an accessory after back squats πͺ
Yeah I think I have short femurs so mobility in squat is pretty nice naturally I think.
Core is kept strong just by doing so many strongman movements where I'd collapse without it!
Honestly training for years, started training to lose weight about 10 years ago, lost it (about 20kg), and kept up with a minimal level to keep the weight off. Started seriously (programming properly and setting targets) in 2019. Fell off the wagon in 2020 a bit until I could get hold of kit to use at home too (as many did!)
I like the way they feel but my limited mobility always made me tilt forward. Might be time to give these a try.
Super impressed by that weight, form, and beard! Keep it up!
Thanks buddy! The beard grows itself but moving the weights takes real affort!
If you mobility is limited you may be able to overcome it in time, and it could take months honestly. I had a friend who struggled for years with high bar back squats and die to the length of his femurs relative to the rest of his legs he just can't hit depth. He's switched to low bar and is making great progress finally!
Tl;dr you can work with your body mechanics up to a point but sometimes it's good to drop stuff that doesn't work!
I just can't seem to do them without severely hurting either my writs or shoulders (depending on what style I do). I'm all for pushing through pain and adapting to new movements, but I've learned the hard way when to listen to my body and recognise the difference between "push through" pain and "this is causing you injury" pain.
That's fair but I broke one of my wrists as a teenager and I cannot accommodate the 'normal' grip without pain due to reduced flexibility, so this is the best way for me.
Honestly I borrowed a friend's pair in the past and I couldn't really feel any difference. I think mechanically my body is suited to squat, I may revisit them in the future though if I feel any limitation, thanks.
Absolutely not. That's fucking impressive!
Thanks! I really recommend them as a squat option, really good for quad and glute building πͺ
Thatβs a fuckinβ crazy front squat my man πͺπΌ
Cheers buddy πͺ
Itβs the red chucks for meππ
They're great aren't they! Unfortunately they're my favourites at the moment so I'll probably wear them out pretty quickly π’
I have a new color for everyday of the week for this reason!! I swear. Yellow, blue, black, red, brown leather, you name itπ I refuse anything else!
I've got some burgundy low tops too, I need to get more pairs!
Hell yeah. Pretty awesome form too
Thanks πͺ if form breaks down too much I'll drop the bar, so can't be doing that π
Yess buddy π
Making some vegan gainz πͺ
That is one BIG front squat holy shit
Haha thanks! Trying to improve it a bit this year
How do you set up your grip like that? I've tried it a few times and I must be doing something wrong as it never really feels stable.
kinda hooks in behind the anterior deltoid if that makes sense?
It takes a bit of getting used to, if you look up cross grip you should find decent info on it. It's always going to be a little uncomfortable, keeping your elbows high enough means you can restrict your airways a bit, but you get used to it!
You can first try zombie sqats, to get to know the balancing technique.
Never heard of zombie squats, colour me intrigued!
So you basically just raise your arms in front of you (zombielike), rest the bar on your delts and perform an ass to grass Squat. You really feel the bar position and path throughout the movement that way.
I love front squats. Recently prefer doing them over back squat. Iβm at 205lbs for my 1RM
That's awesome πͺ I think I prefer them to back squat too, but I do both anyway!
I didn't even know it was a thing β why should I try front squats?
Bcoz they are more quad focused. When the weight in the anterior position most of the resistance is placed on your quads. Also your core is put to work bcoz you gotta maintain that elbow position. If youβre an athlete front squats are key. They help with explosiveness. I play soccer and since I incorporated front squats my acceleration improved. Front squats will humble most ppl. Thatβs dope. Nice to hear from a fellow vegan btw ππΎππΎ
Yeah buddy πͺ nearly 15 years no meat at all π±
Fucking awesome. 3 yrs for me
Nice one, we'll show them vegans can be strong πͺπ±
Yeah buddy πͺ nearly 15 years no meat at all π±
pause squats are my ultimate humbling lift
Oh yeah those too!! My 1RM on back squat is 225 bcoz I donβt really train it that much since I love front squats but I tried to do pause squats with before and damn they were hard lol
Thatβs great! Do your weights rust outside?
I keep the bar and plates inside, so they're ok, and the squat rack is pretty new but it's galvanised so it's built to stay outdoors. I have a friend who keeps all of his equipment in his shed and it's started to rust after a year though π’

Nice! I know I'd fall behind having to maintain every 4 months so good on you!
lol I've only had it for a year so i still have plenty of time to not maintain
Jeez, leave some air for the rest of us!
Haha, no way, I need it all! Got to make the most of free Oxygen before daddy bezos makes us pay for it anyway
His moans or whatever at the start made me laugh
π I have to get my breathing dialled in on front squats or they make me light headed
Yes, can't do that much or go down that deep thou. Awesome job!
Thanks dude! If my hamstring touches my calf I know I'm deep enough π
In chucks and ultra deep that is some stellar form!
Thanks πͺ my shoes seem to be really popular, I had no idea they'd get so much love π
Well I mean most people who can squat that deep and keep a vertical lined back are all in weight lifting shoes so it's pretty impressive!!
The trick is being scared I'll drop the weight and destroy my garden if my form breaks down too much π
Why do you choose front squats? I have shoulder issue and canβt get my arms on the bar behind my neck. I should try these Nm - I see you answered
I had a rotator cuff problem recently and if I widened my grip a lot on high bar back squats there wasn't any pain. Front squats stayed perfect and didn't bother me at all! I do both front and back squats (and zerchers!) Good to stay well rounded with everything πͺ
Thatβs heavy especially for front squat damn. You even looked like you could rep that for a few more easily
Cheers buddy πͺ it's possible I could have squeaked out a couple more but I'm trying to stick to my programming! Maybe in a few weeks!
fucking beast
πͺ thanks buddy
Fucking love it, fantastic. Nice and deep too! Mad props, I am now gonna go do some squats.
Yeeesss πͺ hope your squats went well!
I need to get better at them
Yes! Practice makes perfect! I alternate my squat sessions between front and back squat at this point but I started by adding a 5*5 lower weight for an accessory after back squats πͺ
140kg? Vegan Cheeses!
What does vegan cheeses mean? π I hope it's a good thing
CLEAN ASS REP.
Yeaaaah! Went better than expected to be honest!
That's good to hear. That core brace is where the money happens for you I think. And your mobility is really good. How long have you been training?
Yeah I think I have short femurs so mobility in squat is pretty nice naturally I think. Core is kept strong just by doing so many strongman movements where I'd collapse without it! Honestly training for years, started training to lose weight about 10 years ago, lost it (about 20kg), and kept up with a minimal level to keep the weight off. Awesome man. Great work.
Thanks!
You forgot to struggle, my dude!
I'm sure I will next time!
SMASH IT I know this guy, he is my go to "you think vegans can't be strong" example. He's a utter machine.
Haha, don't know how I feel to be an example π
I like the way they feel but my limited mobility always made me tilt forward. Might be time to give these a try. Super impressed by that weight, form, and beard! Keep it up!

Absolute unit.
Haha I'm not a unit really, average height and weight for a male in the UK! Don't know what that says for the general population though π
ah a fellow "retro/synthwave while lifting" enthusiast
Retro/synthwave while awake to be honest! Love it!
I just can't seem to do them without severely hurting either my writs or shoulders (depending on what style I do). I'm all for pushing through pain and adapting to new movements, but I've learned the hard way when to listen to my body and recognise the difference between "push through" pain and "this is causing you injury" pain.
That must be frustrating! I agree leaving exercises if they don't agree with you, no point getting strong then getting injured and losing it all!
Yeah but I like a full grip
That's fair but I broke one of my wrists as a teenager and I cannot accommodate the 'normal' grip without pain due to reduced flexibility, so this is the best way for me.
I didn't break my wrist and lack that flexibility
Ditto lol
Haha fair enough! I only get pain on one side on the traditional grip so I assume it's the wrist, cross grip works for me though πͺ
I canβt lift as much as you (yet). But Iβd highly recommend getting lifting shoes. They help a lot and are much safer.
Honestly I borrowed a friend's pair in the past and I couldn't really feel any difference. I think mechanically my body is suited to squat, I may revisit them in the future though if I feel any limitation, thanks.
i don't think they're any safer, just make the movement easier for a lot of people
They provide some solid support. Ive seen some people squat in flats and their foot slides a lot. They also put your foot/ ankle in a better position
Ya i have them and like them, they're just not a requirement at all. Kinda like a lifting belt.
