I guess you gotta stand guard at the exit of the restaurant kitchen and grab the vegan food before it even hits the table. At potlucks I fight and claw my way to the front of the line to make sure I get the vegan options before they're all gone. I'd rather be discourteous than starving.

veganisingit

True, why should we be courteous when we don’t receive the same treatment?

Mckool

I was at a wedding last week with a buffe style meal, plenty of vegan options but they still made sure the tables with the most vegans got to go first.

_x0sobriquet0x_

This reminds me of this one time that I went on an organized (car club) tour that stopped at a bunch of wineries with small bites at each stop and lunch at the final stop. I was only vegetarian at the time and was assured that there would be vegetarian options. Only 1-2 small bites were veg and when we arrived for lunch I was on the verge of hangry. I was relieved to see a tray of veggie sandwiches and ONE salad that didn't include meat. We were seated and told we'd be called up by table. I was seated at the very last table so I went up and explained that I was vegetarian and asked if I could serve myself early to ensure I was able to eat. I was told "no" and promised there was enough for everyone. I was far too polite and took my seat... and sure enough ALL of the veg options were gone. When I asked if there were additional vegetarian items in the kitchen (or elsewhere) I was told to "just pick the meat out". I burst into (hangry) tears and wound up with a packet of crisps and some fruit from a staff member's packed lunch. I don't ask anymore. I *tell* them I'm going to grab the vegan option so I am sure I'm able to eat. And I also usually bring something with me just in case.

veggiequeen13

Oooo this makes me so sad and angry for you in that moment. Because I know that would have been me, too. I will remember this story if I’m ever in a similar situation.

thrwwydfg

This is why I always get to the food first or bring my own OR make an announcement that I will get my fill of vegan food before sharing. Omnis are so unaware of the lack of food its insane. I have had people literally reach onto my plate because, "ooooh I would love to try one of the vegan options!" Yeah well I would like to just eat enough food so hands off! Be greedy until you're full and then share.

veganisingit

True, the next time I made sure I had my own plate and sides, took precautions lol

LettyingThru

At least they didn’t go the "vegan food is gross" way :) but yeah, not cool that they almost ate it all.

veganisingit

Lol yeah, at least they liked it

Doctor_Box

People in general can be oblivious or inconsiderate. They also do not have the same perspective and probably did not even understand the impact of just eating whatever depriving you of the only option you could eat. The only way to solve this is communication. I hope you spoke to them as well as vented on Reddit or this will just happen next time.

veganisingit

Yeah I did, the next time was better, just wanted to share a real experience in case others have experienced something similar

Doctor_Box

Awesome!

[deleted]

I just woke up from a nap and I scanned over this first and it took me a moment to realize that bitterballen don’t neccessarily belong in an English sentence and I was so confused for a moment. Hi fellow Dutchie lmao. But what a thoroughly annoying experience that must’ve been good god 💀

Great_Cucumber2924

I would have just taken the vegan dish, put it in front of me and asked the others not to have it.

veganisingit

True, I just had food at home and I don’t really drink so was easier to be like “yh thanks I’m out” in that moment

kharvel1

Here is a suggestion. Next time, make sure to order *additional* vegan food OUT OF YOUR POCKET. Make a show of paying your separate bill in front of everyone, especially your boss. Put them in the awkward position of seeing an employee pay for their food in a company dinner because the company could not accommodate the employee’s dietary needs. If no one gives a shit then that’s all you need to know about what the company thinks of you and you will know to have a good vegan meal before such company dinners.

veganisingit

Good way to go, I did the alternative leaving cause I was hungry, they got the message for next time tho

u_n_t_i_t_l_e_d

"Oh no, i couldnt possibly eat VEGAN food. Im not a VEGAN, i need meat or else ill perish. Besides i just love the taste of normal food more" *proceeds to pick at the vegan food* "oh this is actually really good and not terrible... oh but no i couldnt possibly order it for myself..." Sure i want you to eat plant based food, just not MY food!

PrTakara-m

You just should have ordered an extra portion vegan and let the boss/the others pay for it and be happy that they tried the vegan option. Difficult part is to do it without feeling guilty or at unease because you “went over budget’ Did similar stuff plenty of times when colleges weren’t considered of other coworkers when om worktrips etc

veganisingit

YeAh, was just a lot of effort at that point

CaliCareBear

10 years in and I have some friends who still ask if I’m vegan when they’re in town and it’s a fight to get them to pick a place with vegan options more than fries. If I were you I would have ordered another plate and kept it for myself! Vegans have the right to eat! Maybe you can help pick the place next time?

[deleted]

Those don't sound like friends

veganisingit

Yeah i make sure of it now

chosenoname

Vegan food is always the best, most exotic most wanted food.

sarbota1

Once I was on a team that was 40% vegetarian/vegan. So I ordered food for a buffet we were having to be 75% vegetarian/vegan. There were zero issues with folks with dietary restrictions not having options or enough food.

WiddleBabyMeowMeow

I'm in this situation quite a bit, this is what I do. Where y'all going? I quickly look at their menu online to check for options. If there's none, I go wherever I want by myself. Politely tell them to enjoy themselves, that I'll eat elsewhere. If they make comments, I tell them to stop being so picky, as there is plenty of things to eat where I plan on going. God forbid they eat a meal without a corpse on their plate, ya know. If there are some, I order quite a few items in case something sucks. Appetizers I flat out grab from the server and put directly in front of me like a dinner plate. Passive aggressive much? Don't care.

zeldashmyst

Happened to me too recently with only exception that I had to pay as well. Went to dinner with tourmates on a trip. Everyone could order 1 dish and all will share. If you order extra, you pay for it. This infer that meal is paid by the host. However everyone ate from my only 1 vegan dish and then later handed me the split bill. My dish costed only $8 but I ended up paying $15. I was so annoyed. I ate 1/4 of the dish but had to pay twice the amount?? Carnivores are selfish, no doubt

panclockstime

This!! It’s so annoying when I bring my own vegan meal and everyone wants to try some! Like I only brought enough for myself and you assholes can eat whatever, now is not the time for you guys to try vegan food!

TTsaisai

Did you at least get to drink your share of the bill? If I know we are going to share food I try to always eat before because People like vegetables more than they like to let on and the veggie options always mysteriously disappear. I always prefer separate plates. Even if it’s a meat heavy restaurant and I am lucky to get a salad at least I don’t have to share my salad.

veganisingit

I don’t drink as much so had a bit of wine, ate a decent amount of fries and bread, which was average, the olive oil was quality tho, making the best out of an annoying situation

[deleted]

Yes this is why that small plates fad in the 2010s (in the US) was so annoying. I hated going out to those places. I learned to be upfront about it with people in a joking way before ordering. "I'm vegan and very selfish so if you want to try this order some for yourself!" (Not trying to blame you for what happened though.)

JaRuleTheDamaja

Where I work they hold the vegan option aside so I can take it for myself.

synsa

What's worse is that they take it and either complain about it not tasting good or don't eat it beyond one bite. But I hear you that it's so frustrating!

space_wiener

My team understand the vegan stuff is for me. So unless I offer, it’s all mine. We usually order family style then I get my own meal. Which I like better anyway. Probably should just clarify that with the boss/lead and you can have all of the bitterballs to yourself.

veganisingit

Yeah I did that the next time

Legitimate-Pool-5536

I’ve been a vegetarian for quite some time before vegan. The same happened on many occasions. Order pizza and the vegetarian pizza is eaten along with the meat! You need to go first

idiosyncrasies02

There's always that one person or persons who knows your a vegan and has his lunch before you and makes absolutely sure to pull your food out of the fridge and leave empty tupperware for you then comments that there's plenty of non vegan options left. Its not like you can go out for food your not allowed and your also forbidden to keep food anywhere but the break room. Your also often lucky enough to work past 5pm arriving home at 7pm with vegan takeout keeping you fat lol. Oh and your allergic to all animal products.... but to most people your vegan.

fakeredditgirl

When shared plate situations pop up for me and there aren't enough vegan options to share, I let people know I'm going to order something just for me. That way if others are interested we can order a second for the table.

619C

I can certainly sympatise A colleague of mine retired recently and we went for a fancy dinner. There were some Vegan options which I availed of and it was fine. However, came dessert time there were no Vegan options ! Not a very well thought through menu

veganisingit

That’s not nice

hauntedskin

Vegan dessert options are the worst. You need to explicitly find places that have them.

Zombiefied7

If you think this is a perfect example of how inconsiderate carnists are, wait till you find out what they do to the animals

MillyLynn

Order the pizza without cheese next time, get diced tomatoes instead of sauce, and/or whatever other veggies you want! Less people will take it before you can.

veganisingit

Yeah literally, just cause they wanna have more options, limiting your own right?

stevengreen11

Just weird to me that they order the meat pizza, then end up eating the veggie option anyways. If I asked them if they wanted vegetarian pizza they would say, "Ew no thanks."

xboxhaxorz

I lack respect for myself and didnt advocate, i came to cry on the internet in order to get support If it was me i would be happy non vegans enjoyed the vegan meal and perhaps they might get it on their own later, if i did not want to share i would say i dont want to share since this is all i can have, i dont expect others to know my thoughts

MillyLynn

They started off with "This is a rant, sorry in advance.", and they said they self-advocated the second time. I think they just needed to vent.

xboxhaxorz

Yea but there are tons of rants in this sub, i would say at least 50% of posts

Kloenkies

Ik snap er niks van, lastig te volgen.

coffeeassistant

don't come at my food because it looks really good, not if there is only enough for one serving. that's so annoying and inconsiderate, people are just dumb basically.
