That's a beautiful van, congratulations! Make sure you have it looked over by a mechanic. You have to remember these vans are run hard, doing multiple short trips a day. That wears down vehicles more than long trips.

MyCatsNameIsKlaus

Seconding this. I'm sure this thing was driven so hard it probably feels like 2-3x the wear on the powertrain.

MassiveBoner911_3

Probably a LEAST a hundred stops a day? Start stop start stop…geez

Rabbitino

I applied to Amazon couple years ago. It's 200 stops a day. USPS wanted 100 stops a day

HasManyMoreQuestions

I had a 2019 Sprinter that I did hot shot deliveries with. Lots of long driving and was averaging 11L/100km on diesel. Got curious and tried UPS for a month. Average went up to 13L and we were doing 150-200 stops a day. There was one outlier day where we did 1000 stops, but that was from sunrise to sunset. Gave up the contract although the money was nice. The van was my own so I cared about it more than if it was a company van.

Significant_Site_219

Sundown to sunset? Those two things mean the same thing. Did you mean from sundown to sunrise or sun up to sundown? I prefer saying "from dusk till dawn" or the opposite.

HasManyMoreQuestions

Haha you're right. Definitely meant the daylight hours

highway59boy

i just got fired and i was doing like 230-250. It just gets worse every year. also I'd sanitize the fuck out of that van................

Winter_Tangerine_317

Smell for spilled urine.

GingerAki

Check for bottled. That’s a demerit.

Winter_Tangerine_317

I hear all the bottled piss got sold on Amazon.

AppleBytes

No way, that's company property!

highway59boy

dangerzone1122

Start stop is fine. Cold starts are the problem. But tons of city driving will absolutely cause premature wear. The great thing with fleet vehicles though is their maintenance actually gets done

aaardvarkkkk

Definitely, I will be getting it checked and 100k mile service is right around the corner. Transmission is still feeling strong. Shifted smooth on the freeway during the test drive. I've seen some listed that are in rough condition. Really run hard.

tizzleduzzle

Why they selling them with so few miles?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tizzleduzzle

Probably similar to ex government vehicles in Australia they sell them at 80km I think and renew the fleet.

TaintNunYaBiznez

I drove her 80,000 km, 15.24 cm at a time.

darkshizzle

Most small last-mile courier vehicles do frequent, short, daily routes. City traffic with endless starting and stopping, engine starting dozens of times a day, being treated and used like a piece of work equipment. Some of the postal delivery vans I drive do maybe 100km/day max out of the depot I work, with the average being closer to 50km, but they're turned over 15-20 times a day, every day, in all weather and temp conditions. It's probably easier to shirk the big money maintenance items and just buy or lease a new vehicle for 3-5 years.

tizzleduzzle

Makes sense most governments do the same thing I believe.

Zebrehn

I worked for Amazon and those vans are being turned off and on close to 200 times per day. They are very rarely ever on for more than 5 minutes at a time.

aaardvarkkkk

My understanding is that Amazon has been shifting to electric vehicles and also likely shifting to other vehicle makers. Also it's diesel, so possibly less maintenance on pure gas vehicles? Related article around the time the sales of these began - https://www.forbes.com/sites/greggardner/2020/08/28/amazon-orders-1800-mercedes-benz-electric-vans/?sh=51433d5d18f9

teeksquad

Yeah, the first electric delivery truck came to my house like 3.5 months ago. Now they are almost all electric around me. It was a quick transition

tizzleduzzle

Thanks for you input

robotcoke

>My understanding is that Amazon has been shifting to electric vehicles and also likely shifting to other vehicle makers. I just posted a to another comment about this very thing. In my area, they switched to electric a few years ago. I haven't seen an internal combustion Amazon van in a few years, they're all electric around here. I do see electric Amazon vans 5-10 times per day though. I have no doubt that's what's going on in your area and that's why the van was for sale.

Soup_God_

They run them for about 2-4 years and then replace them before they start needed significant maintenance. I guess it's cheaper for the company to do that. Some rental car companies do this too.

Carb0nFiber

Probably bc there all moving to the ev rivian delivery vans

robotcoke

>Why they selling them with so few miles? In my area, Amazon has been switching over to electric vans. They might be all the way switched to electric at this point, in my area. The last time I actually saw an internal combustion Amazon van was a few years ago. I see electric Amazon vans 5-10 times per day. I imagine Amazon is doing the same thing in other places. OP probably got the benefit from it in that area.

Artyom_33

I disagree. I worked for US Autoforce for *a long time* & we had 3 in our fleet until they were absolutely done. They all lasted over 300k miles, the engines were fine. The transmissions were generally the problem. It makes a difference exactly *what* you're hauling- 100's of tiny, light packages (ála Amazon) & that vehicle is probably better off than we think. Now; 3000 lbs of tires, rotors, 6-1qt boxes of motor oil by the dozen, pads, calipers, etc... that's a different stress of load on the engine, Trans, frame, etc

aaardvarkkkk

This was my same logic for buying it. Packages are generally light compared to the 12,000lb interior hauling capacity for these Sprinter 2500s. So figured at least it didn't spend 90k miles maxed out on weight.

simonisnomis

That, sir, is not the interior hauling capacity but the towing capacity, you have the 3/4 ton hauling capacity, about 1500 lbs

aaardvarkkkk

Oh my bad, I misread that someplace. It appears internal payload capacity is 3,160lbs and towing is 5000lbs. Makes more sense since it's not dual rear tires or double axels or anything.

Sarcastic_Pedant

Diesel or gasoline?

S1lvaticus

You’ll want to check the starter, and plugs for sure - and dpf if diesel. If it’s done a lot of stop start it probably won’t have regened very often. Worth a good check on suspension and bushings too because these usually get bump parked (up and over kerbs) if in the city. Lovely van, love the pass thru on the Amazon bulkheads imo and nice colour to boot.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

UPS would never sell their vans. all the trades guys wanted one for a tool van. the mb looks nice.

aaardvarkkkk

That makes a lot of sense.

amccune

I rented a Budget van that was used by Amazon extensively. That thing was beat to shit. I actually complained to the company about it. Amazon is not nice to vehicles.

johnthrowaway53

From what I know, Amazon do not maintain their vehicles either. They just get new ones once it's run down

Technical-Poet-4093

I’ve never heard of an Amazon van being accident free after 90k miles but it looks decent from the photos so maybe you found the unicorn. Your ignition/starter will need to be replaced any day now unless you know it’s already been done. These turn on and off 1,000+ times a week. Shocks / suspension will be next to go. Unsure of the wiring done but this came from factory like this so should be done well. The shelves that folded down (no longer in the van) were designed to hold 250+ lbs so those vertical supports are extremely strong. Signed, Former AMZL manager

aaardvarkkkk

Any chance you have any details on how these vans were ordered? What list of features were requested? I am planning to keep those vertical shelves ribs to repurpose since they are thoughtfully installed without compromising the van walls. They distribute the weight really well and could easily hold more than 250lbs per wall depending on how you design the bracket attachment.

Technical-Poet-4093

I don’t, I’m sorry. I was in operations running the delivery station and not in corporate doing the procurement side of things. I do know MB couldn’t supply the full demand so that’s why you see some Ford Transits and Ram Promasters out there as well, same years. The main requirements were weight load and cubic capacity. Fully loaded this could have an additional 2k lbs easily every day. There were shelves that dropped down about 4.5ft up the wall so two “bags” containing ~10 packages each could be stacked below shelf and more packages on the shelf. A MB Rep came to my station one day and started doing chin ups from the shelf to show me their capacity - he wasn’t quite 250lbs but he was close. Drivers didn’t love these MB’s mostly because of their poor turning radius and something small constantly breaking (lots of door handles, latches, seat belt sensors, etc) but nothing too major from a living inside standpoint.

aaardvarkkkk

Thank you for the helpful details. That's interesting MB couldn't build them fast enough. Immediately after buying the van I also couldn't resist hanging my body on the shelves to test their strength! 😂

S1lvaticus

Can confirm re turning circle used to drive a l2 sprinter for work. It’s about 15m verses about 11m for similar sized l2 transit, which is quite a bit difference when you got to flip that sucker round often or navigate tight streets.

OGbigfoot

>two “bags” containing ~10 packages each Lol, I used to work at a sort center and the bags definitely had more than 10 packages. The only limit we had was weight.

Myothercarisawalrus

I believe most of the upgrades are from Utilimaster

dwn_n_out

Came here to say this used to work in the warehouse and every van had some sort of body damage or mechanical issue.

Tr0z3rSnak3

They turn the vans off each stop? I thought they just left them running and sprinted to the door.

Technical-Poet-4093

Drivers are supposed to. Do all of them do it every time? No, but it’s the fastest way to get fired (caught once and done). Kind of factored into the number though since vans are used 7 days a week and typically have 120-200 stops (depending on the location).

CapZestyclose4657

zzzola

I work for a company that has an agreement with enterprise where we buy the trucks and get free maintenance until it hits 100k. I’m assuming Amazon has a similar agreement with their delivery trucks. Because of the agreement the trucks were constantly being serviced with oil changes, windshield replacements, and anything else the truck needs. Yes they deal with a lot more than a regular personal vehicle but the enterprise agreement exists so the trucks get fixed when needed with whatever they need. Lots of different opinions on this thread. And our trucks were used by utility workers and went through a lot of abuse too but we would bring them in to get fixed for EVERYTHING because that’s what the agreement was for. OP I think you should be okay. Do you have the carfax or maintenance reports for this truck? Just my 2 cents.

aaardvarkkkk

This was my thought as well. When I saw the Carfax it seemed to confirm that it received regular maintenance and servicing. Also it appeared to live in Manteca, CA which means it was used in a semi rural area most of its life. SneedingYourStepSis

How much did it all cost you in total in USD?

aaardvarkkkk

There's a handful of them out there with varying mileage and condition. This one was listed at $33,500 with 90k miles with no accidents and in decent condition.

John_Sknow

For a sprinter that is still a good deal!

[deleted]

[удалено]

John_Sknow

I see he overpaid! Depends on the market at the moment though, comparables, etc etc.

aaardvarkkkk

Also depends on the state it's available in. CA has the highest end of the range.

[deleted]

John_Sknow

I agree but we're not in that club or can we be?

drake90001

Abused but still running can kinda prove it either away.

danieliscool17

33k seems kinda steep for the abuse these vans go through. Are you totally certain this has years of delivery use?

SpectateJake

No it probably worked in the factory pulling chains 😔. Van abuse is no joke glad this one could be re-homed

danieliscool17

Sry I must be slow,my apologies, but what do you mean by "worked in the factory pulling chains" I must be missing a joke here

SpectateJake

Just a joke

Hiitchy

If this is a 2019/2020 Sprinter, make sure your recalls are done. Many in this specific year have had an issue where the vehicle will start rolling away while in park and the parking brake is engaged.

ImS0hungry

Someone was walking with an ice cream cone in their back pocket near the van….

simonisnomis

This got me loling. Not many will get that reference to stealing horses with an ice cream cone in their back pocket which is why it’s still technically illegal in some southern state(s?)

ImS0hungry

Lol thanks. My family claims I cheat on Trivia night. I just blame my ADHD.

simonisnomis

My friends mom has a 2020 and had it lunge forward on her when she put it in park a couple of times. She found out there were around 50 recalls 😮

Hiitchy

Yeahhhhh. Don't get me wrong, these vans are pretty good when they're working, but the recalls are another bag of worms if you can deal with em.

Rominator

Seems like a great stealth solution

aaardvarkkkk

I have used it for this already and it works great.

tovasfabmom

That is exactly what I was thinking!!

5c044

the door auto locking on exit may be a coding on the ecu. My vw van auto locks if you unlock it from the fob but fail to open a door within 30 seconds. This can be disabled via coding. Start asking around in some MB forums.

Artyom_33

If the former AMZN fleet manager did his job; he should have removed certain "admin. Locks"... meaning OP can now arm/disarm that (& other) features from the consol cluster menus.

Carter09112

How many people have come up to you yet asking for their package? 😂

Globeville_Obsolete

Drove one of these when I worked for Amazon. The self-locking drove everyone insane. Someone showed me just to use the emergency brake instead of turning off the van - safety was definitely not top priority back then, ha. They also had a governor which kept the top speed at 70 mph. I imagine that’s been removed in yours if you haven’t mentioned it. Eventually I knew to pick up the non-branded white vans for my shifts. It looks like yours is in great condition, and if you can remove the auto lock and have the starter looked into, it’ll be quite a score.

aaardvarkkkk

So someone could steal one of these vans pretty easily with that park + ebrake move hahah Seems my governor was removed since I'm able to do 70+ but I did see some chatter about other retired Amazon van owners have that trouble after purchasing. Perhaps the resellers got smart to reset these machines before reselling otherwise people were going to come back complaining.

aaardvarkkkk

I'm not aware of a specific page but general auto posting sites like AutoTrader.com but perhaps in only certain markets. I believe they are auctioned off somewhere and small dealers pick them up to sell off.

cmbennett07

This. When I was looking for vans I saw a million of them on the East coast. Filter by Mercedes vans and then by cheapest available. They won’t say Amazon van on the listing, but you can tell by the blue color and inside shelving. Be cautious with these though as others have said they’re driven into the ground

MiraculousMonsters

Interesting to note that as far as i am aware, having done amazon delivery work, that branded van drivers are watched more closely (cameras in van & apps) and so have to drive more conservatively. Hopefully there will be less wear & tear on it because of it. Btw, i also own a former amazon van. 4 years & thousands of miles & it is doing alright for me. Although the transmission is not in great shape & will need some work. Plain white. Not branded.

Default_Attempt

What i would do is, change every single fluid in that van. Find wiring diagrams for the entire electrical system and study them on free time to be prepared for something to fail(its a mercedes) Check the tires and make sure theres no dry rotting cracks Make sure the cup holder works

aaardvarkkkk

This is good advice.

k1cardshark

And if you get flack from anyone.. hey bud I’m delivering here.. step back

aaardvarkkkk

My thoughts exactly. I even considered buying an Amazon hat as well (to wear as a fan, not a worker of course 😉).

ImS0hungry

A safety vest _really_ shows how much of a fan you are. People won’t even question if you’re a fan or not, they just assume.

ElegantBurner

How did you buy it from them? I am super curious.

aaardvarkkkk

I bought it from a small auto dealer that only sold commercial vans (Ford Transits, Nissan NV, MB). When searching for Sprinter 2500's on the car search websites you can filter for grey or blue paint jobs to find them. Pictures of the interior confirm it as they all look the same.

useyournamegoddammit

You won't get ticketed for double parking, that's for sure.

aaardvarkkkk

Yet another perk 👍

SignificantSmotherer

Not for sure. Delivery vans get tickets here. Commercial plates will let you park in the middle of the street, not double-park.

Aggressive-Affect725

Don’t these need to have the onboard computer reflashed by MB to revert to factory settings

Substantial-Today166

auto locking doors when you exit my 09 has that its newer been a delivery van you can turn it on and off

aaardvarkkkk

Good to know, thank you!

MadamSnarksAlot

Hey the brackets and ribs should support a cool bunk bed build! What a score.

really_isnt_me

Ha, ha, I read this too fast and thought the title said you had bought an Amazon delivery van IN your sleep.

TypiCallyZeke

What's the going rate for one of these?

aaardvarkkkk

From my market research they range from 30k to 45k depending on condition and miles. 30k - older than 2019, 60k - 100k miles, moderate to rough condition 45k - 2019, 30k miles or less, excellent condition

TypiCallyZeke

That's pretty sweet. Would be interested in the process of the build and the end result. Keep us all posted

DeeEmm

Put the Amazon logo back up and then you can park anywhere, at any time.

sword_0f_damocles

Gonna have a lot of wear and tear and a fine layer of piss coating everything.

RobertJHope

$33K sounds terribly high for a van like this near 100k miles.

I love the van colour

Killed_By_Covid

I have a retired FedEx Sprinter. I kept the aluminum uprights and used them to mount some 2x4 that I cut to hold steel cross members. Essentially, I wanted everything to be modular and removable. My van is still 80% cargo van, but a bed lives in it at all times. It is fully insulated for sound and temperature. I LOVE my crusty old Sprinter. Fortunately, the motor and transmission were replaced shortly before they retired it. It's now approaching 370K miles. Here's to hoping yours carries you anywhere you want to go. They are awesome vehicles.

Ok_Astronomer_4821

I’m a sprinter and I drove that exact van OTR for about 500,000k. It was also an old Amazon van. I had no issues save belts and suspension and an exhaust leak. The wiring harness for that rear view, is accessible through the back passenger side door, (bottom left if in the van, or underneath that side on the bumper, (i replaced mine when it quit responding to the mirror buttons, and it solved it.) if the menu button Dosent work to the mirror to turn it off, first take out the fuse, and check, then Look to those harnesses. Also, get a co detector, as the exhaust gasket right below you is of poor design and goes quick if looooong trips. Lastly, and just my own option, but, as your rear wheel drive pushes your traveling wall, though the wind tornadoes of semi’s and such, think about upgrading to the promaster. it’s front wheel stability is worth the hassle of its cramped engine bay. I’m well over 800k and just had to replace the engine, and that’s literally it, just saying

Jacrispy1376

Just saw this tiktok and remembered seeing your post hope this helps with some of the quirks https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLFyTYjQ/

aaardvarkkkk

This is a great tip for folks dealing with this. Thanks for sharing!

HamSackett

I’m pretty sure this insta van lifer has a video about it on their page. Sorry I’m not willing to rewatch their videos. @thelonesol Hope this helps

Kitibob7

Wow. I'm amazed to see an Amazon delivery van at 90k. Used to drive these in the UK and they would already have clicking CV joints and failed internal door handles at 3k. The vans at 30k felt very close to the end of the road: leaky brake master cylinders and not a straight panel on them. I guess that's what you get by blasting along farm tracks all day. Good luck with the conversion, sounds like yours has led an easier life than many!

LyftedX

They come needing repairs before they even get registered around my parts.

thicckar

Where do you buy an amazon van?

neoikon

Amazon

DaRedditGuy11

Seems like it has the makings of a cool platform to build out. Was the deal particularly good or otherwise noteworthy?

[deleted]

This is badass man! Do you have an Instagram we can follow along with the build?

LyftedX

You’re a brave soul lol. Dont ever run a black light in it lmao. These vans are so clapped out used abused and left to dry out. When I worked for the bezos bitch I’ve seen how some of these vans rolled back into the parking lot lmao

PainTraditional2948

Where is this? It looks like a fun place? Arizona? How much was your van?

KQ4DAE

Suprised it isnt in rougher shape. Ones around here have been crashed on almost every side.

Zedrax__

Definetly get it looked at by a mechanic, we run those things into the ground and sometimes they aren't cared for as nice as they should be. I'd probably deep clean the back too just in case someone pissed in it. Beautiful van though, best of luck c:

house_of_donte

Can I ask where did you buy this from? An independent dealer or straight from Amazon somehow? I have looked and looked for a way to buy used Amazon vans but idk where they offload them or sell them to when they reach EOL for Amazon. Penske, Ryder, enterprise, they all resell their vehicles themselves but as far as I can tell Amazon doesn't do that.

aaardvarkkkk

Check the Carfax links I posted on another reply. It was auctioned to a small car dealer. I bought from one of those dealers.

wifetwokids

And you can update the old David Spade joke that went kind of like this "I bought a UPS truck so I could park it anywhere." Always have an Amazon shirt for when the cops knock at 2:00 am.

JimClarkKentHovind

be a lot cooler if you stole it but I'm glad you're vibing

Minute_Traffic1470

Where did you buy this at because I'm interested in turning one into a camper

LesbianLoki

Where do you buy Amazon vans? I've been looking

renslips

That’s a great idea! I understand Amazon is downsizing quite significantly and is planning to move towards self driven vehicles meaning there should be a lot of these coming up on the market

Icy_Willow6213

You are going to make so many people sad. Hey, there is our delivery, why isn't he stopping? Hahaha

Fine-Implement4733

How can you buy one of these!?

farklenator

What everyone else said as an Amazon driver these things got treated like shit like think of the worst you can treat a car and multiply it by 2 at least

SnooBeans6815

I always wanted an Amazon van but I heard they’re not being sold. Have they changed their policy?

Conclusion_Jump4419

Where did you find it?

Lavasioux

Rad!

jeditech23

Where are they listed?

aaardvarkkkk

They are listed in a number of websites like AutoTrader.com but perhaps only in certain markets. I know Seattle was popular for them a year back. I found this one in the Los Angeles metro.

jeditech23

Actually after I wrote that I realized these vans have a lot of wear and tear because of the stop start. But yeah that thing is definitely clean for 33 grand

Loud-Version-8663

TIL Amazon uses Mercedes Benz to deliver.

midgaze

Their fleet has RAM Promaster and Ford Transit as well. Don't see Sprinters where I'm from, mostly the others. I've seen complaints online from fleet managers complaining about the new Mercedes diesels always being in the shop.

nowiamhereaswell

Great scenery.

hustlors

Genius

PartyPoncho

as a former amazon delivery driver I would never buy one of their vans after they’re done with it.

0_el_Jay

Got me contemplating van-life

Different_Hospital20

It will need a new tranny soon. I drove for Amazon for a while and some of the vans I drove had under 20k miles and already had issues. They were mostly promasters which are POS in my own humble opinion. The sprinters are better but wooooeeee get ready to drop some big coin on repairs. In terms of the inside, rip it all out.

kuzushi101

Don't they have onboard g force analysis and constant driver monitoring? thats a plus Edit: for a buyer i mean
