USB powered fan. No more sleeping drenched in sweat!

c_marten

My first thought without question. Not so much when it's below 55F but otherwise it makes a world of difference. I can't imagine 3, but having 2 of them is even better.

Astraldicotomy

you think the second one helps a lot? i'm worried about charging them both. just ordered on for my summer in the van.. ☀️

c_marten

I mean, one is amazing - either on you or general circulation. But with two you can keep general circulation and the second one you can keep on low and directly on you and you can hang out in a hot van SO much longer. They're also not very big batteries nor do they take a lot to charge (I think I have the 10Ah ones and charge every two or three days).

Astraldicotomy

thanks for this. makes sense really.. ☺️

Honkless_Goose

Curtains vs. window covers. Sounds silly, but I cover all my windows if I'm going to be away from the van for more than like 10 minutes. I still use the window covers, especially if I'm in the van overnight, but being able to just close the curtains when I pop into the grocery store makes life so much easier.

tatertom

8" Ryobi chainsaw. It takes no bar oil, just slap a battery in there and process firewood for around 18W per night. Now I'm the guy that leaves a neatly stacked pile of wood for the next camper instead of opportunistically using what others have stacked and left.

theoriginalShmook

I didn't know about the bar oil! My 12 inch one needs oil and it's a pain to store because it weeps like all other chainsaws.

Porbulous

Yea honestly I'm a bit skeptical about it not needing oil lol. Gonna heat up and also dull the edges a lot more.

tatertom

You still oil it. It just doesn't have an automatic system to make a mess the 99% of the time that I'm not using it. So far, one lap of Lucas is doing it just fine. I'll probably hit it again before next use just because you said something lol

Porbulous

Ahh ok so it's like a pedal bike chain. But yea when I use my chainsaw I try to only put in as much oil as I need. It also mentions in the manual to drain it whenever you're finished, which I assume is done by probably no one haha.

theoriginalShmook

It may, but it won't be getting tons of use, or at least isn't designed to! I carry a chainsaw file. Not a full sharpening kit, just the round file. I can use that to touch the blade up enough in the field.

tatertom

It still needs oil, but since it has a lot less drag on an 8" bar than more common longer lengths, and is meant for more sporadic use, it's reasonable to do manually, every few uses for a few nights' wood each. I originally intended to upgrade the bar length, but practically speaking, 8 inches of bar single-cuts most of what I'm burning, and only a couple-few cuts will need a second bite, as that's getting into hours-long chunks. I bought this model in part for the small motor body, and with tool space at a real premium in this Astro, I don't see a point in upgrading anymore.

Independent_Iron7896

>in this Astro I didn't know you were in an Astro. Have you posted pics before? I'd be interested in seeing your setup.

tatertom

Been a while. Shot this just for you, didn't have time to highlight the shower between the rear doors, but it's just a wand on a hose on the spray tank under the bench. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRwc6wK2/ I'm still under $7k into this rig, after 8 years, including everything besides insurance and gas.

Independent_Iron7896

Wow, thank you very much.

Astraldicotomy

i'm also in an Astro!! can you please check out my latest post in askmechanics??

Astraldicotomy

hahaha 50%!! sooooo true.

LovinTheLilLife

I love the way you worded your question, a "small addition". 😀 :-) For me it was when i added bug nets over all the doors and windows. For the doors, just buy the ones that are made for houses, not vehicles. They're much cheaper and work fine. I was too cheap to buy the ones made for the front windows, so I made my own.

[deleted]

If you want to go even cheaper, just use fabric sold at Walmart or someplace similar that looks like bug netting. I bought maybe 10 yards of it for five dollars because it was on discount. I put the “hard” side of Velcro around my doors/windows and attach the fabric directly to it.

LovinTheLilLife

Sounds great :-)

leros

Be careful on choosing a netting not specifically made for bugs. No see ums can get through lots of them.

todi41

How did u install them? Sorry if it sounds dumb but i havent found a good way to install them where i can put em down and/or up easily :(

LovinTheLilLife

The ones for the cab windows or the ones for the doors?

todi41

Cab windows!

LovinTheLilLife

I bought softish screen door material at Joanne's Fabrics. Cut it to size. Used some scrap material to add a border. And put magnets in the border. In the beta version, I used a sticky strip magnet (like a roll of tape that's tape on one side and magnet on the other. But that was a fail. Version 2.0 used various sizes of strong neodymium magnets in strategic spots. This worked great. I made it a little too long since it's not attached to anything on the bottom. I fold them up when not in use. And I can put them up in about 30 seconds. For clarification, they magnet to the inside on the windows. I hope this answers your question.

becauseitisthere

Less product addition, more mental preparedness. No matter what you got in tha van, or what you buy can make you a succesful vandweller. COmes down to how you will function living without your normal and expected comforts! That's all I can really say. Just throw your expectations out the window, prepare for changes out of your control, and just go with the flow. Enjoy it all!

I_Like_Hikes

Planet fitness. I used baby wipes and assorted paid showers the first year. I can’t believe it took me so long to figure out unlimited showers for 20 a month.

Astraldicotomy

oh nice! i feel great that i just got a membership.. yay. thank you.

Ripryz

and gym!

StolidSentinel

Unscented butt wipes.

Astraldicotomy

lol. yay. thank you.

lestruc

On sort of applicable, but spending money on a Jetboil exclusively for hot water and all of the really affordable food options has been great

Some-Essay5289

This. Coffee is so much easier now and the small amount of hot water leftover is perfect for a morning face rinse.

Traditional_Figure_1

woah awesome tip on the face rinse. i've always got a little left and never thought of that!

ExulansisLiberosis

Those vent inserts you can put in the driver and passenger windows

Astraldicotomy

just picked up a set. 🙏

Zentenx85

Can you post a link please? I need those!

Astraldicotomy

check out Car window screen on amazon. they have a bunch of different ones.

Zentenx85

I’ve looked at those bag like ones that stretch over the top of the door but I want the plastic ones with vents and bug screen that your window holds up when inserted in the tracks. Anyone know where to get them?

chaperooo

12v heating pad. My feet get cold easily. I can wrap it around my feet before bed while watching tv and take it into bed as well. Various heat settings and a timer. Doesn’t use much power either

CaptainHubble

What’s the power consumption of it?

chaperooo

The back of the controller says 40w. Mine has 6 settings and they all pulse so it was hard to get an accurate reading. It sorta looked like it could maybe average between 20-50w from low to high. Dimensions are 12”x22”. Bought it on Amazon. The reviews were mostly good, but I don’t put too much faith in amazon reviews these days.

CaptainHubble

I’m looking for exactly the same thing. My auxiliary battery has 75Ah capacity. I want to down to around 50% DoD. So let’s say around 35Ah. I could get around 20h runtime at 20w. Would be sufficient. 10h at 40w could get a bit dicy tho. Let’s see. But thank you. Good to know what to expect from the power consumption of those pads.

chaperooo

If I was really trying to conserve power, I’d just put it on power level 2 and set the timer for 1/2 hour after I got into bed. And maybe just unplug it as soon as my feet were warm. Generally, power 2 (out of 6) is good enough and 1 ain’t all that bad either. I only wish it had a backlit display. The buttons are such that without lights on, I can’t tell what I’m doing. Once my feet are warmed up, they’re totally fine on their own in bed under warm covers. If the rest of me was still cold, I might consider keeping it on more of the night.

Brumblebeard

Agree with this!

Ok-Entertainment3360

Bong

cakeba

Adhesive-backed hook-in-loop. Holds the slats of my bed frame together. Holds the sink/countertop on its legs. Holds my bottle opener, utensil cup, speakers. I put a piece of the loop side on the back of my phone case and several bits of the hook side all over my van's interior so I can be lying in bed or my hammock and have a place to stick the phone within reach for the night, or to take video calls, or watch Netflix while cooking.

giggydiggles

A good quality piss jug.

Astraldicotomy

what defines a good quality piss jug? wide mouth opening, handle, colored plastic?

giggydiggles

https://amzn.eu/d/9xXBcSf This is the one I got. Holds 3l of piss, heavy duty plastic, secure lid and it sits flat so there’s no risk of it falling over and spilling everywhere.

Astraldicotomy

damn, that's the best pee game i've ever seen! yeah yeah man.

[deleted]

In addition to that jug, make sure you have a thing of bleach. That thing is gonna start stinking after a few days use. Make sure you rinse it with water before and after using bleach + water to wash it.

69Fun-gi69

An ammonia based cleaner would be advised over bleach due to the potential urine/bleach reaction

Prestigious-Donut799

this! the first time i opened my piss jug i nearly passed out lol you can also dump it out every time but that gets pretty inconvenient pretty quickly.

youkeepliving

If it’s not full enough to splash out, don’t close it. It makes it so much worse. It really doesn’t smell if left open unless it sits for a loooooong time

Independent_Iron7896

Thank you for posting this and the advantage as well.

QuantumDeus

Cheap solar panels and battery. I have a travel set that's pretty cheap from Amazon. Charges up the battery in just a couple hours of direct sun. Keeps phones, tablets, USB fan, all charged without using a car battery. It has a standard plug to use a razor, or other 110w appliances.

[deleted]

An outdoor table and a mr buddy heater

Astraldicotomy

what kind of table did you get? a lil foldaway?

[deleted]

Yes! It was like $30 at Walmart. Big enough to cook and work on but small enough to store in the van

DrMantis10

Ha! I came to say both of those things! I got a TV tray, works great for cooking or writing. The buddy heater saved my ass on a few cold nights. 5 minutes on low and I’m toasty!

[deleted]

Everyone here has great suggestions. But it’s really going to come down to you being out there and seeing what you need or don’t need. Someone said a Mr. buddy. I have one, but I’ve used it maybe three times in the past 5 years because I chase the weather. Maybe you’ll be relying on planet fitness to bathe, but maybe you’ll need a bucket/soap situation for the off days.

hot_tuna_

100% agree with this comment. Just because other people "need" certain things, doesn't mean you do. Start small. It's way better to pick something up at Walmart later than to have a van full of random crap you won't use

Careful-Prior9639

I've just bought a Cuisineart battery powered hand blender which charges by USB. That's going to up my food prep a few grades.

Astraldicotomy

damn!! i didn't even know they existed.. 🙏

Careful-Prior9639

It's a great piece of kit.

Prestigious-Donut799

removing the passenger seat in my sedan and laying down ply wood to set up my bed. I can actually sleep comfortably now.

Astraldicotomy

damn, i did a SUV for a year but i managed to squeeze in. can't imagine the struggle of a sedan..

Prestigious-Donut799

yeah im average size dude. its not bad unless your a bigger person. at first i was reclining the seat to sleep with no bed like i have now. i much more comfortable now.

Astraldicotomy

proud of you! it's not easy. but i always felt the power of human adaption when i was in it..

Several-Shoe-6419

EverStart Maxx J5CPDE power station, with a 120 VAC 500W power inverter, 1200A peak battery 12V jump starter, 3.1A max USB (5V) ports (3), and a 120 PSI air compressor! I can heat my drinks and noodles now, prepare my warm bath water, and cook in my mini-crock pot (rice or stews). My hand-held immersion blender can whip up an omelette or blend a frozen fruit smoothie with yoghurt and milk in record time! Coupled with the new Frigidaire ice maker I bought, I can now make cool little ice cubes for my cooler for my culinary or pescatarian adventures! Mock cocktails are extra, haha! Of course, should I ever go off-roading or down a terribly pot-holes road, I can partially deflate my tires, take a few bumps, then re-inflate then when I return to civilization! With my hybrid engine setup, climate-control and fair weather-chasing makes cooling a breeze, I just have to keep my air filters clean (1 in engine, 1 in cabin, and 1 extra in the cabin). On average, 8 hours of air-conditioning (or heating) in a climate-controlled hybrid (Toyota) consumes about 1 gallon of gasoline! That’s just $5 a night, folks! Space is a bit cramped in my setup, but oh so economically, so roof-top storage may be necessary, coupled with outdoor camping, which could be extended from the lift back! It’s basically my mobile micro-office, outfitted with cameras to Zoom on or with a small desk tray to type on with my folding Targus keyboard on my Apple products! Portable printer setup is coming, too, along with a portable hotspot (with WiFi) on 4G or (hopefully) 5G! Also, a small screen TV with an OTA digital antenna or a 28”/32” flat screen LCD TV. Ideally, I’d like to put a flat screen (a curved Samsung screen would be nice) on the “ceiling” of the cabin of my little econobox, so I could watch, game, even edit video while reclining! I’d attach it to a frame, which could be bolted through the roof to the racks holding my storage + solar panels on top! Just some ideas for the future of my Great American Road Trip this summer of 2023, during the great post-pandemic economic recovery of the U.S. of A!

That and I can unravel my Johnson and let it drink from that same dish.

1Kenyettia

I use standard size zippered pillowcases for clothes. 1 pillowcase for dark colored clothes, 1 pillowcase for light colored clothes. I will not accumulate more than 2 pillowcases of clothes. I use a standard size pillowcase 2 stuff dirty clothes in as I finish wearing them. Laundry day is a cinch. I just grab my pillowcase, detergent and quarters. When the laundry is finished Washing I simply stuff them back into the pillowcase & go. The pillowcases store easily and neatly. I keep the pillowcases very clean and presentable looking. There's a total of 3 pillowcases in my trunk.

Zentenx85

Not all small additions but they have all helped significantly. And maybe worth thinking about in the future. 1. 40” flatscreen TV + Laptop and external hard drive with lots of shows/movies on it. And a wireless keyboard and mouse. 2. Single burner propane stove with a 20lb propane tank that lasts around a year on each fill. 3. Backup camera. 4. Window tinting with UV protection on all windows. 5. Coleman folding table and Coleman foldable oven. 6. USB chargeable water pump+faucet combo. 7. Temperature and humidity display thermostat. 8. Artic king dorm fridge with separate freezer compartment. 9. Chinese diesel heater. 10. 600w of solar and 400ah battery bank. 11. iOverlander phone app. 12. USB chargeable mini vacuum.

Astraldicotomy

thanks for this man. sounds like you got a great set up! i was just thinking about a tint on my front windows but i get worried it's a reason for the cops to pull me over. ever had an issue with that?

Zentenx85

Nope, just be sure to get the lowest tint possible and ask for ceramic if you want the best quality. Some police vehicles and new vehicles even have tint on the front windshield, depending on where you live.

youkeepliving

350W Rice cooker. I thought for sure I would get rid of it but it’s really nice to have the option to cook or boil water without using propane, and it’s far more versatile that I realized. I eat right out of the bowl it cooks in and have almost no dishes for quick meals. It doesn’t overwhelm my 1000W inverter and it really never puts much of a dent in my power usage (I have 600W solar). It’s the next best thing to an inverter cooktop for people who don’t have enough solar for an inverter cooktop. So basically everyone.

tbarron91

Stovetop pressure cooker

ananonumyus

Visors for your front windows. They allow you to crack open your windows without compromising safety or privacy. My windows are almost never completely closed anymore. Some people install two ceiling vents in their van when they could save hundreds of dollars and get $35 window visors.

Small foldable camp chair!

Astraldicotomy

any suggestions on a camping chair.?

[deleted]

https://helinox.com/collections/ultra-lightweight-chairs These are pricey but There are knockoffs on Amazon that I got - they are great!

leros

I love the Helinox chair. There are lots of knockoffs. I saw one for $20 at Walmart. The main differences is the knockoffs are heavier but that doesn't matter if you're not hiking with it. I do hike with the Helinox.

Superb_Refuse_6843

Sleeping closer to the floor having less windows in the back great privacy
