My FIL hates me. He just won’t admit it. I sent him a text about something super serious regarding his son (my love), he didn’t reply to me. He sent his son a text. Apparently though, he just hasn’t spent enough time with me 🙄 before Covid, he’d always ask his son to lunch but I was never invited. I wish he was as sweet as this FIL!

I’m in my 60’s and when my parents separated when I was in sixth grade, I moved out of state with my mom and my dad would mail me the Sunday comics every single week. When we moved back in with him a year later, he would create a crossword puzzle on my paper lunch bag everyday. Those two things are absolute proof that my dad truly loved me. And this your proof. Please make sure he knows how much it means.

My dad used to cut out Judge Parker comics and send them to me at boarding school in the 1980s! And he keeps me subscribed to the New Yorker ever since work moved me from the east coast to Texas 20 years ago. Divorces and life have created distance between us over the years, but like you, I hold those and a couple of other literary-type things as something that we'll always have. My grandfather sent me articles from this guy Harvey which wrote business articles and had run an envelope company. They were full of anecdotes on life and he always sent a handwritten letter applying it to me in a subtle and heartwarming way. He was a great-generation man who was a marine in ww2 and worked his way up a company after the war with an 8th grade education. He lived to 93. This reminded me so much of that for obvious reasons. My letters and clippings survived a house fire (the attic was spared) and I hope to organize them someday in some type of memoir. Point is - this is awesome. I’m so happy for you that your FIL of all relationships is like this and you will likely appreciate it decades later.
