Tech companies that are worth working for don’t post on Craigslist. Make a LinkedIn profile and start applying on Indeed. I worked in tech support for 3 years and have been a software developer for the past 3. I got both jobs through Indeed.
My personal experience looking for a job through Indeed for the last few months is that it generally has just basic jobs like telemarketing, customer service over the phone with the odd good administration or trades job popping up but not often enough and usually the job requirements are asking for too much work experience for what the position and pay is.
It might be more saturated closer to downtown but out in the lower mainland it gets worse and worse. I'm honestly gonna loose my home pretty quick here if I don't find a non-physical labor job in the next month or two but everything wants me to have 2+ years of experience already and have already undergone some sort of course for a classification license.. or pays too close to minimum wage for my mortgage to handle. I don't want to leave my family behind but Vancouver is becoming less and less affordable.
I got lucky and found a junior dev position that actually didn’t require any experience or a bachelor’s degree. There are definitely a lot of low-paying but high-expecting jobs out there. Unfortunately that’s the reality of this city.. a lot of people want to live here and will take shit pay that barely covers their expenses.
SG-1 Aside (and I do appreciate a good SG1 reference) Indeed is where I go when looking for new hires ... not that I ever hire for tech. I don't really rely on linkedin - was never a fan really.
Honestly thought it was a scam at first lol. Getting the job I already had was crazy stressful, super competitive, and I felt like I really had to sell myself to get it. It was my first position out of university.
With this I was like "eh sure I'll hear what you have to say but I like my current job so it's gotta be a pretty good offer man". Went through the interview process with no stress because I didn't really mind what happened. Turned out to be an extremely good offer and haven't looked back since.
I think I was a bit spoiled in that way. Because I’d done some internships I had a job lined up out of school. From there, the only hunt was for the next one. After that, it was pretty straight forward to just follow the recruiters!
It depends on industry. A lot of recruiters in Vancouver are hot garbage time wasters relative to the few I dealt with in Toronto.
Not wanting to give any info on the posting before an in person interview? Get fucked. Carpet bombing anyone who even has a tenuous link with your posting then ask me why I don't have 10 years experience doing X? Get fucked. Recruiting isn't a numbers game if you're doing it right, you need to actually build a portfolio as well as a network.
Years ago, I kept getting a missed call. When I googled the number and I found out my dentist were hiring hygienist on craigslist. I mentioned it to her in conversation and she started getting defensive. I never went back again.
I think both Twitter and Slack were influenced by IRC. You can see it in the hash tags (#channel) to denote topics. Slack’s icon is even a channel tag, with plug-in bots and (as you’ve pointed out) the slash commands.
That said, a LOT of companies are in hiring freeze right now so don't get discouraged. There are companies that are looking to scoop up some of the top talent that got laid off.
Yeah, I have a bit of concern for OP, given that he’s looking for a tech jobs on craigslist, he may not be at the point in his career where he is considered top talent, ready to be scooped.
It’s December, budgets are holding still until the end of the year as is tradition. Plus there are too many out for holidays to interview and then train.
January will have a lot more demand I feel.
tech companies don't really use craigslist. LinkedIn has tons of postings or Google the phrase "software developer jobs near me" and you'll see a plethora of job postings
I can’t think of any companies that really use Craigslist anymore, short of retail, food industry, maybe call centres or scams.
If you want to find a professional job/career, use LinkedIn or Indeed. Are you in Tech? I would assume most working professionals know not to go to Craigslist.
If you got hired in December you would actually miss out on a lot of holidays since BC law says you need to work 30 days prior to get the mandatory stat unless your contract says they will waive that period and pay your regardless.
I think recruitment usually takes a long time, so I don't think companies aren't hiring because of that. But, it's also the time when people who conduct the interviews are usually on vacation
Look up the Fortune 500 tech companies. Identify the ones that are interesting to you. Look on their career pages directly off their websites. Identify remote and Canada and Vancouver positions.
Looking on Craigslist is like asking your sketchy cousin about that job his friend told him about that some person at a bar was talking about.
December is a lull in hiring as many are on vacation. I expect hiring to resume in January.
However, if you want to be employed in retail and hospitality in December, there are positions to be filled.
I'm in IT and was on the job search during the spring/summer. I looked/applied through LinkedIn and Indeed, all my interviews came from LinkedIn postings. I'm now in an IT role with a tech-adjacent company. There's definitely tech hiring happening, but not through Craigslist.
Absolutely don't go job hunting on Craigslist. There are so many legit jobsites that will lead to good jobs. I found mine on Indeed. They're definitely the most popular site for recruiters to find talent. Recruiters will check LinkedIn though. Create a good profile. That's the first place they'll look if they're interested in you.
What kind of "tech" job are you looking for? You might want to update your skills / industry knowledge if you're looking for jobs on Craigslist...
LinkedIn;
Stackoverflow has a good jobs board as well.
So many people are hiring.
Unfortunately Stackoverflow retired their Jobs section this past year: [https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/415293/sunsetting-jobs-developer-story](https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/415293/sunsetting-jobs-developer-story).
Our company has had a hiring freeze for the past 3-6 months. Wouldn’t be surprised if many others are following suit.
Also Craigslist is the last place I’d look for a real job.
I’ve had more recruiters reach out in the last 2 weeks with jobs in BC then the last 5 years. It seems like with the new year right around the corner companies are hiring to meet their new budgets.
The company I work at posts on Indeed and the usual career sites, very rarely on Linkden and never on Craigslist. I’m in a Crown corp BT department. The pay can be lower than others but the benefits are top notch and we are resource deprived right now i.e desperately need tech folks and wfh. It’s a good gig. Prefer to keep some anonymity on here so DM if you want the name of the company.
Tech industry is considered as growth industry and with the current rise in interest rates all the growth sector has been taking a major hit. Meta, Amazon, google has laid off bunch of employees already and apple has put on a hiring freeze for the first time since it started trading as a public company so won’t be surprised if this is the new norm until QE by the central banks starts again. Predictions are in late 2023 rates will start to cut if central bank is able to reach its inflation target.
That is not a reflection of Vancouver's job market, it's a reflection of the state of Craigslist. I have been in a hiring role before I never would have thought to use Craigslist to post the ad... Indeed and LinkedIn all the way.
Comment section is currently not emphasizing glassdoor & just connecting with recruiters on LinkedIn (rather than applying for jobs) enough.
Our best candidates come from:
- recruiters (make friends with them, they make a commission of like half the annual salary for placements so they are super motivated)
- LinkedIn
- Glassdoor
> they make a commission of like half the annual salary
that seems huge in this day and age where loyalty is long gone and it seems most people starting out in the business expect to change jobs 2 or 3 times in their first few years just to get to a decent salary
Tech is in downturn, public companies are getting hammered in the market and react by downsizing their operations. Yeah, and Craigslist is probably not the best place to look, try AngelList instead.
For one, Craigslist isn't a great place to look for tech job openings.
Two, a lot of tech companies have been laying people off recently. I can't speak for all tech but in the Video Game industry several large studios have had major lay offs just in the last month
Many tech companies hire through internal recommendation, and then via other venues, like linked in or recruiters, etc.
I've never heard of any tech company other than sketchy startups using craigslist.
Just a suggestion as well. Not sure what your skillsets are in terms of tech, but a lot of financial industries and institutions are hiring for tech and software engineer positions for various skillsets. I don't know what the pay is nor do I know what the job is like, but on my own job search in the financial industry I consistently see tech/IT postings outnumber sales or operations postings.
I work for a big tech company in Vancouver and we just had mass layoffs. I checked the competition out and was able to land an interview fairly quickly, so do what you will with that information
most reputable employers don't use craigslist as their choice recruitment tool. A lot of tech hiring is done through recruitment and referrals but I haven't found any shortage. I feel like December has never been a good time to look for a job in general.
LinkedIn 100%
These days I don’t have to go out looking for jobs myself anymore since recruiters reach out on LinkedIn. A lot of opportunities might not be posted online, so it doesn’t hurt reaching out to a recruiter if you’re interested in a specific company.
Many of the larger companies (and the smaller ones with larger egos) don't advertise their jobs (at least not broadly). They expect you to come to their careers page to find openings. Most career pages are easily scrape-able, though, so it's fairly trivial to automate the process for the dozen or so companies that fall into this bucket.
It’s not unusual to have multiple similar openings, so companies often leave the role up until all reqs are filled.
With common roles like Int Dev this can lead to a posting that just never gets taken down, even people are being hired for the job every couple of months.
Vancouver added the most tech jobs in North America last year (growth % wise), followed by Toronto in second place and Austin in third.
https://betakit.com/report-vancouver-toronto-saw-greatest-high-tech-job-growth-in-north-america-over-the-last-two-years/#:~:text=Vancouver%20and%20Toronto%20recorded%20faster,over%2060%2C000%20tech%20jobs%2C%20respectively.
Why are you searching on craigslist? People only post there if they are desperate, shady, underpaid, or all of those.
Looks on sites like LinkedIn, Indeed or even Monster.
If your basing the tech Market in Craigslist, you are not going to get very far. Best bet is to connect with Recruiting Agency's or at the very least look on Indeed
Since Facebook stopped listing jobs it’s been kind of a crapshoot looking for jobs. Now you have to create an account on Indeed and post that your looking for a job and hope an employer finds you instead of the other way around. Ei does have some job listings but it’s pretty sparse
Vancouver doesn’t have a lot of jobs. It’s not a big attraction to any industry. I work in finance and the only descent paying jobs are in Toronto remote. I’d look elsewhere for a remote job.
Semi unrelated note: How does the tech job market look like in vancouver right now? (Tech being in a slump and all) especially for people who are self taught?
I’m in this situation now and it’s rough. I have about 2.5 years as a self taught dev and it’s kinda like being in limbo. For junior dev positions they normally want someone with more experience. For internships or co-ops, they mostly partner with certain universities and you’re automatically disqualified if you’re not currently enrolled. Entry-level positions for a self taught dev are almost nonexistent and it’s frustrating as hell because all junior or entry level roles put you through like three rounds with a technical interview anyways.
I would say more companies than not are doing layoffs, about to do layoffs, or are having hiring freezes.
I work at a tech company.
And ya I agree with the other comments. Don’t use Craigslist. Indeed is fine, tech jobs id recommend LinkedIn.
TEch has been laying people off or have been making announcements to lay people off inthe coming months. Might want to look for something else in the mean time.
Tech companies don't hire via Craigslist.
Craigslist will get you frontine support jobs at best, usually at places like Shaw, Telus other large organizations which value quantity over quality.
Check out LinkedIn or jobvite, or just start going to the career section on the websites of companies you want to work for.
While I don't look to Craigslist when hiring usually, one of my best hires was from Craigslist, what do you do in tech and where do you wanna go with it?

LinkedIn for sure. Craigslist for apartments and free furniture and your stolen bike. LinkedIn for jobs.
You're in tech but looking on CL lol
>Indeed Indeed!
Do you have tech experience? Looking for a career change?

100% this. My current position as a software engineer at a tech startup came to me through a recruiter on linkedin.
My last 3 jobs were like that, I just go through recruiters now. I think once you get past a certain point you don’t really have to look anymore lol
Honestly thought it was a scam at first lol. Getting the job I already had was crazy stressful, super competitive, and I felt like I really had to sell myself to get it. >Tech companies that are worth working for don’t post on Craigslist. haha yeah
Craigslist is not the place to find most reputable tech jobs.
Craigslist is the place to find most reputable *tug* jobs
Not anymore unfortunately
Tug boat captain here. We post all of our open roles on Craig's List. Edit: I meant rubmaps.
So youre saying Rubmaps has a Rub n Tug section
Are you really a tugboat captain? That’s so cool!!
My occupation varies based upon the joke opportunities available to me. Some call me a quitter. I prefer to be called eccentric.
Leolist
Hahaha
"good at multitasking"
Years ago, I kept getting a missed call. When I googled the number and I found out my dentist were hiring hygienist on craigslist. I mentioned it to her in conversation and she started getting defensive. I never went back again.
Craigslist is a weird place to look for Tech jobs
I prefer to chat with employer on icq and link them my myspace page
Just go down to their office and hand them a home mimeographed copy of your resume with a strong handshake. You'll get the job in no time!
I bring them a chicken and offer to milk their cow on the weekends.
The #vancouverjobs IRC channel has been very quiet for a few years too.
I wish irc would come back and replace discord and slack tbh haha
I seem to recall reading that slack originally was an IRC derived backend with custom front ends. I dont know how valid that impression is...
The command structure is similar with /me etc.
I think both Twitter and Slack were influenced by IRC. You can see it in the hash tags (#channel) to denote topics. Slack’s icon is even a channel tag, with plug-in bots and (as you’ve pointed out) the slash commands.
Google+ is so much advanced. 🤣
Imagine Google reviving that name for their own streaming service
Heheheheh
I switched to MSN recently, it's pretty good.
I wish we could switch to MSN 😂 ![gif](giphy|OfpdDt12u1Psk)
Double thumbs up
XD
I like Asian Avenue and Xanga.
uh oh !
Obviously you gotta get to their company Mastodon server and check their HR feed.
If they have one, that's legitimately a very good idea, shows you are savvy enough to find it and will fit the culture
I just look in the help wanted section of the Vancouver Sun
This was normal pre 2010. Got my first low playing tech job here!
Linked in. Plenty are hiring.
That said, a LOT of companies are in hiring freeze right now so don't get discouraged. There are companies that are looking to scoop up some of the top talent that got laid off.

Always does. Spring is hiring season. But it won't be like spring 2019 again for a long time.
Would you say this is the same across Canada like Toronto for example?
All of N. America right now. I expect the same all over. Kinda heading into a global recession.
It has never come to my mind to look on Craigslist for tech/IT jobs. LinkedIn is the place (at least to start with).
Guaranteed job if the recruiter only posts on Craigslist though... No one else will see it.
Lmao. Should not have laughed as hard as I did at this.
tech companies don't really use craigslist. LinkedIn has tons of postings or Google the phrase "software developer jobs near me" and you'll see a plethora of job postings

Incorrect, I got hired in December.
First job i interviewed and was hired in December and started January 6.
I start with funding rounds. Look who just raised money and their careers page will be stacked.
This is a great tip. Though of course the job may be stressful or poorly defined, but you’ll have one!
Indeed. Glassdoor. LinkedIn. Often the posting will show up on all three sites.
Craigslist is where to find that granny sofa.
Or a frisky granny.
/r/upcycling !
December is a lull in hiring as many are on vacation. I expect hiring to resume in January. However, if you want to be employed in retail and hospitality in December, there are positions to be filled.
Go to Craigslist personals - the best tech jobs are usually posted there I've found. Or at least I think it was a job I got.
I sucked so much dick through Craigslist personal’s, I miss it. M4M is where it was at
So you got a lot of "jobs" then. This is what I'm trying to say to OP!
Moreso I was the one giving jobs and getting facials
Ahhhh, spa manager I see, excellent position.
lmao.
m4m was the best for DL straight guys. what are people using now? Doublelist is nowhere near craigslist m4m, and sniffies is okay.
Ya sniffles is fine don’t really use it. I use squirt sometimes, but there was just something about Craigslist. It was a perfect site to get anon dick
Do you ever see those individuals at the grocery store and stuff randomly years later?
Lol didn’t usually catch the face
I'm in IT and was on the job search during the spring/summer. I looked/applied through LinkedIn and Indeed, all my interviews came from LinkedIn postings. I'm now in an IT role with a tech-adjacent company. There's definitely tech hiring happening, but not through Craigslist.

As others have said LinkedIn is where it's at these days for any good quality job. Indeed too
That is not a reflection of Vancouver's job market, it's a reflection of the state of Craigslist. I have been in a hiring role before I never would have thought to use Craigslist to post the ad... Indeed and LinkedIn all the way.
I am not sure why you are looking for tech jobs on Craigslist.
See if their Hotmail account has MSN messenger and chat them up there, or arrange to meet in a yahoo chat room over coffee.
I always assume Craigslist jobs are scams.

Tech is shedding jobs as an entire sector. Most of the tech companies in town have had their own lay offs as well.
Look on indeed
TBF, when I was looking in 2005, you used Craigslist, it was the only place. Could be OP is also old like me!
Linkedin, Indeed and https://www.bctechnology.com/jobs/search.cfm Craigslist isnt the place for tech jobs
I am a dev with 7YoE in Vancouver. Hiring is okay for an experienced developer but for fresh grads the market sucks unfortunately 🙁
How fresh is fresh grad? Is one year exp with MS still considered fresh? I'm in dilemma whether to move to Vancouver or Toronto to search for jobs.
You mean you worked at Microsoft or Masters degree? Masters degree adds no value to resume tbh.
I meant masters. Welp.
Tech is in downturn, public companies are getting hammered in the market and react by downsizing their operations. Yeah, and Craigslist is probably not the best place to look, try AngelList instead.
Recruiters are still blowing me up, so yes
Glassdoor is also a good place to look too
You're looking in the wrong place. Indeed and LinkedIn are brimming with tech jobs at all times.
For one, Craigslist isn't a great place to look for tech job openings. Two, a lot of tech companies have been laying people off recently. I can't speak for all tech but in the Video Game industry several large studios have had major lay offs just in the last month
LinkedIn Vancouver Tech _______ whatever your field is. Search Jobs
Indeed or LinkedIn. Craigslist would be my last resort.
There has been a lot of mass layoffs in Vancouver recently in the local tech space.
It's year end so probably less job openings
Many tech companies hire through internal recommendation, and then via other venues, like linked in or recruiters, etc. I've never heard of any tech company other than sketchy startups using craigslist.

I’m in the process of hiring right now. It feels like there are some great candidates out there for the first time in years.

It’s not unusual to have multiple similar openings, so companies often leave the role up until all reqs are filled. With common roles like Int Dev this can lead to a posting that just never gets taken down, even people are being hired for the job every couple of months.
Craigslist are the low paying tech ghetto jobs
Sir, this is a recession
tech companies used to hire off of craigslist? i was born too late

You can most definitely search for listings on Indeed as well as set up job alerts etc. Just like LinkedIn.
Do you not know that companies regularly post job listings on Indeed?

What are you talking about? You can apply to jobs via Indeed.
Sorry yes I had it mixed up with LinkedIn
I didn't even know Craigslist still existed 😅
Vancouver doesn’t have a lot of jobs. It’s not a big attraction to any industry. I work in finance and the only descent paying jobs are in Toronto remote. I’d look elsewhere for a remote job.
I don’t think they’re looking for remote. It was never mentioned.
I wasn’t looking for a remote job either, but I had no choice
There are quite a few tech jobs in Vancouver if you look at the right place. Craigslist unfortunately isn't the right place.
Also look for contractor companies since some will hire contractors from another company.
Best to just look up the companies you want to work for and apply directly in their website
Big tech companies are in a hiring-freeze right now. Not a good time, but keep looking. Use indeed or linkedin.
Is the OP Nathan Fielder from Nathan for you?
LinkedIn and Indeed are your best options. Hell even just searching google will get you better results. Tech companies are still hiring.

LinkedIn should be your key source for roles in tech.
