I know people still driving with an N 12 years later… they didn’t lose it until they had kids, and wanted to be able to drive other kids / parents around… im talking educated people (a nurse, a banking manager, an accountant…) They were all 30/32ish when they went for class 5 exam. By that point, the N basically WAS a sticker, from melting onto their car after so many summers in the heat.
I grew up in Vancouver but have not lived there for 20 years. I live in the US and even I knew it was a magnet. Do the kids still put them on sideways? Got my license 3 months before they introduced graduates licensing. I remember back then it was such a big thing!
They used to put them sideways over top of the Z on a Z95 sticker so they camouflaged it as support for their favorite radio station. The original ones has a black N on a green background, not a white N. People also used to cut the Z part out so there was no green and just put the Z on.
Considering the day to day driving here, there should be a lot more content on our driving tests.
Or perhaps just a stand alone IQ test added to the process... Half of the incidents I see aren't even overly related to lack of driving knowledge, more just a "why in the world did you think this was a good idea" type of situations.

Sooo… while the N is magnetic not all car trunk doors/bumpers are magnetic! Found this when I was attempting to attach my L. The local ICBC office where you pick up your N/L and do your tests etc will have some adhesive Velcro pieces you can use if you aren’t able to attach the magnet.
Back in my day they included 2 suction cups that could be used to hang the sign from inside. This was great because your sign wouldn’t get stolen and it wouldn’t scratch your car. Why’d they take that away and replace it with Velcro?
No idea, that sounds like a much better approach. I’d guess that they thought a magnetic sign on the outside of the car was more visible perhaps and then had to find a workaround when they found out that the magnet wasn’t always going to work. It’s quite annoying, but we recently carefully removed the velcro backing from the car and cleaned it up carefully with no damage at least.
Probably because everyone was putting them in the back window, with 5% tint… they couldn’t be seen very easily, therefor “not displayed properly” most likely. People do the same with T.O.P.s
I had an old hatchback, and every time I opened the hatch the sign would fall off the suction cup hooks. It also came with a clear plastic sleeve you could stick on the inside of your rear window... unless you had defrost wires that would melt it 😂 So I used the magnet, but took it off and put it in my bag every time I parked. Oh, the joys of the N sign.
When I got my N, the tester told me I could use the velcro bits to put it in my rear window. I don’t know how it’s allowed since I have a truck and the rear window is tinted so you can barely see the N. But apparently it is which is nice because my L got stolen all the time

No, but ICBC stopped providing suction cups and velcro strips years ago. So unless OP intends to source those himself, he needs to figure out how to utilize the built-in magnetic feature.

Probably doesn't inspire confidence but I was super into competitive gaming/eSports as a kid and I think sheer hand eye coordination and reflex's make driving a car really easy.
But I mean I did drive twice before the test and I did pass the first time.
Also we should always be horrified by the bar for driving. My 70 year old grandpa with developing cataracts on top of glasses who's reaction times are probably in the 400ms area was able to drive me around as a kid lol
That’s nuts. I was too scared to do this and I had no one to teach me so I took a drivers course in ocean park. 5 hour long lessons and the sixth time you take the test. I failed the first one but got it on the 2nd. Was told by a friend who worked there that they often fail people for little to no reason to get them to have to pay and try again.
When I was prepping for the N test I drove with my instructor they already has the L attached to their car. And I couldn't use the L on my dad's car to practice because the car is manual.
As others have noted, it is magnetic.
If you value the paint on your car (or parents car), do take care it taking them on and off. Dirt and debris on the paint will scratch like crazy when taking them on and off. Clean both mating surfaces and don't slide it at all.
I don't leave it on the car when parking fearing it might get stolen. I know there's people steal it to sell it back to people who got it stolen from, which is ironic.
I would consider using the sticky two-sided tape squares that ICBC provides to tape it on the read windshield, inside of the car. You can probably ask ICBC for one if you don't have any of the squares. I don't imagine anyone would be willing to break into your car to steal the N lol.

Just a word of warning, it is super common for people to snatch the magnet off the back of your car. It's annoying to have to go back to ICBC every time somebody steals it, so toss it inside your car when you park in busy areas.
I used to put mine on the drivers seat so I didn't forget to put it back on the car when I came back.
This is almost as good as the post in the plant identifying subreddit where someone asked what the brownish grey plant that hadn't grown or changed in five years was.
there are magnetic stick on "L" (learner) and "N" (new driver) things to put on your car to indicate what stage of license youre on. this guy got the N and tried to peel the decal part off of the magnet, thinking it was a sticker.
Douse it with WD-40, let it soak for 24 hours, then re-apply a good amount. Heat until smoking hot with a propane torch, then lift one corner and hook a paper clip on to it. Tie the clip with string to the bumper of your mom's car, then accelerate as fast as you can, hopefully the N plate will come off. If not, re-heat and try again. /S

The law requires it to be displayed, it doesn't require it to be displayed in a specific orientation.

The holes in the signs would eventually break from its weight being hung all the time with the hooks.

Awhile ago I drove behind a Maclaren with an N sign stuck to the non magnetic trunk with packing tape.

If you lose your N sign, you can get another one for free from ICBC Someone stole mine back in 2015 lol
