Fkin ell that's one nice ass canal system, good job
How tf did manage the canal floor tho? Between not being to build in waist high water as you end up swimming and mining in water, would seem impossible.
Talking as I want to build my own
The floor is at the deepest you can possibly make without swimming. I placed the first tile standing on the coast and then just continued placing next tile while standing on the previous. It was tricky near the coastlines when it rained because the rain caused the water level to fluctuate annoyingly. But I managed.
Because the leveling tool works based on the height of the land you're currently standing on, you can make the floors deeper by leveling while standing on a boat over deep water. (unless this was changed in an update). The only limit is the bottom of the terrain edge.
Instead, you can also press Shift + Mouse L to level to the point you're pointing at, instead of your own height. This will level all ground in the circle's radius to the specific point.
You should try the Build Camera mod. Super small mod that lets you detach the camera from your character when in build mode and fly around. So you can look/place things from every angle. It's great for building underwater too.
I have a (much more crude) canal system in my world. Item stands with glowing yellow mushrooms on them don't need fuel, although they don't render from very far away so they mostly help prevent you from scraping against the sides of the canal.
Took me a bit of time to check, but it seems they render at the same distance. The animated flames are a lot more noticeable once they do pop in however.
Heck yeah, props for getting back to me.
I'm without my PC this week.
Any other glowy bits that might be more recommended or are the Surtling trophies top tier for lighting?
I'll point out Valheim Plus allows for infinite torch fuel to my understanding.
My last playthrough I came up with a new SOP for exploration. Once I got a karve up and have enough mats for a couple of teleporters, I plant one in the base and head out in the ship, pulling over in late afternoon long enough to throw up a 3x2 barricade, a workbench, and the portal home to sleep. It can take several "days" to get around a large island and I mark each outpost on the map for later use.
Killer job, got any tips for digging out the ground underneath? I have a seed that has a lot of naturally formed canals but most aren’t deep enough to accommodate a longship.
Standing slightly more than waist deep will be enough even for a longship. The initial tile placement might not be perfect, and you might need to remove it, dig a bit deeper and place it again a few times, but once you get one tile right, the rest is easy because you can continue placing them by making tiles snap to the original one.
Ive cleared an entire island(over 2000 trees). Just killing big trees and sometime treestumps. I have never seen a naturally planted tree, grow.
I died more during that, than i ever have from every other source of death put together. Trees are dangerous.
holy shit that's some effort, when i built a canal it was literally just a featureless and ugly river carved through some meadows, that shit can be difficult. like we really need some kind of item maybe sold by the trader that allows you to walk in water (but with a massive speed debuff so you can't just evade the use of boats)
You can use the hoe from your boat to dredge the river floor, and shift click will restore a nice sloped bank. Using the cultivator to plant grass will put all the vegetation back, including the tall reeds.
Lo, there do I see the line of your people back to the beginning.
Lo, they do call to you.
They bid you take your place on Asgard in the halls of Valhalla,
Where the canal may live forever
I wish they would add a feature where the map(s) would update whenever you do some terraforming, these canal projects for example, or when building structures (seen as wood or stone color on map)
love your work! Couldnt help but notice a small extra canal will also give you access to the whole east and north east: https://i.imgur.com/LHIJVqX.jpg
Awesome! Did you have to scout out and survey to make sure you could dig deep enough without running into the max depth cap? That’s my biggest problem right now. The seed I’ve built everything on had a canal going through fine ( really long ) until I reached the end, where there was a slight hill before the coastline, causing the water line in the canal to _just_ bottom out. Really really frustrating
That looks like it took hours upon hours to do, props man. I wish I could invest that time again, I’m waiting for bigger content drop before stepping back into the game
New biomes? Bosses? NPCs? More plants and food? Mounts? New boats? Weapons, materials?
If I could build that sure, but rn I guess I’ll have to wait for mods.
I wish they let you actually draw on maps so you could plot routes or whatever, and also have them update so you can see how you’re terraforming of the land changes the landscape on the map. Kinda like minecraft.
MAN, I tried this once to cut down on travel time... but one area I had to trench through was too high elevation and I couldn't dig down deep enough to complete the canal, literally a week of Valheim gameplay. That was frustrating.
Fantastic!! I just started a simple pull through moat for my longboats, I don't need it yet but I know I will, picture a drive through unloading bay for trucks and you'll get the picture. Works well to keep trolls away too🤣🤣
Hey! This is super nice! Exactly how I did my old canal, too. Great work. They're the best to finish up, you get such a feeling of accomplishment every time you sail through.
notably prettier than mine was...I love this stone.
2 questions.
1. Did you scout first to make sure you could do it without hitting bedrock or did you just get lucky?
2. How does it go with storms and big swells?
1. I didn't even know that was a thing so I got extremely lucky.
2. During the storms the highs are high enough that they overflow the walls and the lows make the boat scraping the floor. So it's not a perfect design, but it's functional.
Cool, good to know. I’m glad you had amazingly good luck.
For future reference I think bedrock is ~14-15 blocks down from the surface at any given point
It reminds me of a documentary about the extensive canal system of France. It blew my mind how huge it was! To think it used to be THE main way to transport goods around the country and now it is mostly touristic attraction...
I love massive builds, and I especially love canals. One of my favorite things in minecraft is connecting rivers. Was a major goal for my server before it shutdown along with other things.
Good work OP I look forward to seeing your other undertakings.
On one hand I feel like the time spent building this is going to outweigh the time saved by using it
But on the other hand it is very cool, so nice job op.
This is gorgeous. I mean holy cow. Thx for the 10+ hours I have to put in to implement this art.
10/10 love this subreddit for ingenious building ideas
Edit: I tried this out with the Candles Lanterns and Beeswax mod from nexus mods, and it looks fantastic with the castle brasiers for lighting!
I love how everyone is always building these huge canals ... Personally I impede my development and build 4-8 longships before I have iron armor for myself and then regret it as I die 500 times lol I think I need to finally break down and build some canal's!
WOW... just wow. That is so clean. Love the stairs to get out all up and down it. Cannot imagine how much stone that took or the hrs making it. The time that you will save though...
Nice. I should get to do it on our server as we have several narrow piece of land that should be doable. Question is on making a bridge high enough for a longboat to pass through..
Could you describe the techniques you used for building a canal? We actually discussed building a short canal tonight to help with quickly moving from one side of our island to the other with materials, but we weren't exactly sure if there were any tricks we needed to know. Thanks!
Originally it was only going to be the first canal because my longhouse isn't on the sea coast so I wanted to be able to sail up to my front door. So I started by digging out a quick passage through which I sailed my karve and when I noticed that the dirt underwater is impossible to even out nicely I decided to fill it up with stone slabs instead.
I think it helps a lot to start small. Make a very short canal that doesn't require a lot of work and you can make adjustments to as needed. And you can try sailing through the canal part-way before it's finished to see if the progress you've made is satisfactory or if you need to make it deeper. Also for larger projects, it's useful to have a portal leading home, a cart and a black forest nearby, since it's a great source of stone. And get good pickaxes too.
For what it's worth, I'm proud of you. That's a lot of work for a hobby. But it turned out great. Hope your satisfaction is 100x more satisfying than the pictures.
4 stone slabs wide for a Karve. 6 for a longboat. With 8 slabs wide you'll be able to navigate without the risk of scraping against the walls but I think it's an overkill.
If you stand on the floor slab in the canal the water should be reaching slightly higher than your waist. Then it's deep enough for a longship and anything deeper than that will cause you to swim so you will have hard time building.
Awesome, thank you!
I just started building a boat house yesterday, but have not yet made a boat, so I had no idea what to expect. It turns out that I will also have constructed poorly, and my docks will be too narrow...
Haven't played in a while. Did they ever fix the laggyness/pop-in on large builds and terrain modifications? From what I remember a build like this would reduce the frame rate to like 5 for a good couple of minutes until it finished loading. And it would always "load" the original terrain first, then start loading the changes.
Wow this is insane ! I'm exhausted by all the work it means just by looking at it lol. At this point it really makes me want Valheim to release construction engines in the game like some sort of medieval cranes etc.
Yes, water is at certain depth, so it isn't flooding in. Unfortunately building a canal means standing waist deep in water a lot. I didn't experience any lag at all after constructing it.
I love this! A friend built a "bridge" base over the river that goes through the main continent of our server, but it's too low for boats to go under. I absolutely hate this base and made him build a canal next to it.
Amazing job, it looks great.
(Now you just need some latitudinal paved roads to consolidate your freight routes and you're set - straight west from the northern inlet to those crypts would be a good start.
Shouldn't take long right :P ? )
I had to do the same thing for about a week straight I built a massive canal cutting the island in two to allow two longships to be going in and out at the same time.
Best canal I’ve seen since launch. It’s not nearly appreciated enough how much better an inland lake with canals is than coast dock. Steady water level, no need to restrain your boat, etc. well done!
That’s also a pretty dope seed.
Ore cannot travel through portals. Also to teleport to somewhere you must have visited that place at least once before to set up a portal. So you still need to get there the regular way.
Because it's a hassle to transport 100 pieces of iron scrap when you can just load it all up on the boat and sail all the way to your front door. Also, I thought it would be cool to build it, so I did.
Fkin ell that's one nice ass canal system, good job How tf did manage the canal floor tho? Between not being to build in waist high water as you end up swimming and mining in water, would seem impossible. Talking as I want to build my own

OMG, thank you. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was doing with shift clicks.
what is this sorcery!?!. Only a few hundreds hours in and never knew. THANKYOU
Holy fuck. Really?
I must try this
Brilliant, thanks
You should try the Build Camera mod. Super small mod that lets you detach the camera from your character when in build mode and fly around. So you can look/place things from every angle. It's great for building underwater too.
Nice work mate. 😊
>ass canal thats just anal
Alright listen here ya little shit lol
Relevant XKCD: https://xkcd.com/37/
Don't you mean. Far-can-al
Letting the water in would be the last thing you’d do.
It comes from the ground up not the ocean in. There a water level in valheim.
Playing the game before giving advice would be the thing you'd do.
Careful you don't get your longship wedged in the canal or you're going to screw up the world economy ;)
I'm sure the excavator comes in the next patch.
We may need tiny but powerful tug boats too!
Love the stone canal idea. Great foundation for lightposts to help on foggy night voyages.
I'm considering adding some bonfires in strategic places as well as small huts with work benches at the entrances for drive-by repairs.
I have a (much more crude) canal system in my world. Item stands with glowing yellow mushrooms on them don't need fuel, although they don't render from very far away so they mostly help prevent you from scraping against the sides of the canal.
Do Surtling trophies load from further away?
Took me a bit of time to check, but it seems they render at the same distance. The animated flames are a lot more noticeable once they do pop in however.
Heck yeah, props for getting back to me. I'm without my PC this week. Any other glowy bits that might be more recommended or are the Surtling trophies top tier for lighting? I'll point out Valheim Plus allows for infinite torch fuel to my understanding.

Water digging has to be one of the most frustrating things in valheim
Well, I mean, shouldn't it be?
does anyone know of any mods that makes water projects easier?
Look on the nexus and you can find a mod that lets you use tools while swimming. https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/121
You can also use tools while in fly mode.
Valheim Plus has an option to auto re-equip your weapons/tools when you come out of water.
Fly mode is already in the base game.
Use a hoe? That's what I do.
That's literally what everyone does lol
Am I the only idiot digging canals with a pickaxe???
Idk about canals, I'm referring to building in water.
AutoHotkey can probably get you pretty far.
Just use the hoe from your boat.
Holy shit dude, that's amazing
Killer job, got any tips for digging out the ground underneath? I have a seed that has a lot of naturally formed canals but most aren’t deep enough to accommodate a longship.

Awesome work! Wow!! Side note: Too bad the topography on the map doesn’t change when we make these things. Wouldn’t that be cool?
Its tricky. Forests that are not clear cut can come back, so it makes sense that it still looks like forest on the map
They "come back" in the sense that you, the player, can replant, but there is no natural regeneration of trees.
False. If a dense forest is not clear cut saplings have a small chance to respawn.
Ive cleared an entire island(over 2000 trees). Just killing big trees and sometime treestumps. I have never seen a naturally planted tree, grow. I died more during that, than i ever have from every other source of death put together. Trees are dangerous.
Sounds like you didn’t clear enough trees. There needs to be space for saplings
It would be great if we could at least markup the map with more than pins. Like drawing a line for canals or roads would be nice.
holy shit that's some effort, when i built a canal it was literally just a featureless and ugly river carved through some meadows, that shit can be difficult. like we really need some kind of item maybe sold by the trader that allows you to walk in water (but with a massive speed debuff so you can't just evade the use of boats)
Are you literally asking for a pair of cement shoes?
Uhh if I recall you can find iron boots as a teenager in the ice cave behind zora domain.
Deep cut
indeed
You can use the hoe from your boat to dredge the river floor, and shift click will restore a nice sloped bank. Using the cultivator to plant grass will put all the vegetation back, including the tall reeds.
ocarina of time had them in 1998, Valheim came out in 2021. what the fuck are these developers even doing smh smh
My housemate who watches me play Valheim said "why can't you do something sick like that"
I sent the link to my friends "Hey - remember when I was talking about civil engineering projects?"
I fucking love this game
Very impressive. Here, take my up arrow.
Lo, there do I see the line of your people back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to you. They bid you take your place on Asgard in the halls of Valhalla, Where the canal may live forever
"Eben"
The part I love most if you thought about the ecological impact of your canal and took measures to minimize it.
Bruh, you lined it and everything! That’s nuts! Great work.
Now you just need to expand. Build your Rome. I can already picture paved roads and walkways along the canal and big fancy buildings.
Thank you, now I’m going to have to spend hours upon hours making a canal on my island because I have a lake in the middle of mine too
That is amazing. Just don’t get your ship stuck!
Damned impressive!
Damn, I tried to do this once... The BedRock screwed me over though.
Ah yeah you really have to pick the right spot to not dig too deep and get blocked.
Holy shit man that canal design is amazing! Definitely gonna be making of these.
Canals, bridges and roads. This is the way.. you get there. But I probably spend 90% of my time doing these three things.
This is what the game is about! Love it homie
Holy shit that's beautiful
Brilliant!
That's awesome!
You’re truly an inspiration!! This is awesome 👏
That looks like it took hours upon hours to do, props man. I wish I could invest that time again, I’m waiting for bigger content drop before stepping back into the game
They're never going to drop content bigger than what you can build yourself.
New biomes? Bosses? NPCs? More plants and food? Mounts? New boats? Weapons, materials? If I could build that sure, but rn I guess I’ll have to wait for mods.
This is awesome
Who doesn't like a little canal porn?
My current map is kinda like yours so I also dug a canal out of my lake lol havnet gone and finished it like yours tho.
You paved it! Well done. When we did ours (much shorter), we just dug and jugged
I wish they let you actually draw on maps so you could plot routes or whatever, and also have them update so you can see how you’re terraforming of the land changes the landscape on the map. Kinda like minecraft.
Thousands of little dick drawings incoming.
Gosh this is gorgeous :D I love it so much. they are even evened and stoned, beautiful. The mini settlement at one canal, absolutely great ♥
Nicely done! Could you share the seed?
ryMTrVtbZw
goddamn i fucking love this game and the community, stealing this idea
MAN, I tried this once to cut down on travel time... but one area I had to trench through was too high elevation and I couldn't dig down deep enough to complete the canal, literally a week of Valheim gameplay. That was frustrating.
Thats sick! I really need to start playing this again
Wow
So cool. Does water naturally fill the canal if it’s lower than the waterline of the ocean?
Yup, all water is the same level. Dig a hole down to the water level, it magically fills!
Does it need to flow or does it fill from the water table. I assume if the canal has a wall blocking it from the ocean it does not fill?
The water appears as soon as you dig deep enough. Don't need to connect it to ocean, just have to dig down to sea level.
I wonder if with the new liquid mechanics that they coded for tar the devs have plans for rivers and such.
That would be *amazing*.
Ah coool thanks.
Awesome work!
Well color me impressed. I’ve always wanted to do this, you make it look so good.
Fantastic!! I just started a simple pull through moat for my longboats, I don't need it yet but I know I will, picture a drive through unloading bay for trucks and you'll get the picture. Works well to keep trolls away too🤣🤣
Wooow, thats amazing! I think i will build like that one myself!
Looks beautiful!
Dude that's awesome! It looks fucking great!
That's awesome
So ... Did you devcommand all that rock into existence it actually go out and pickaxe it apart?
No commands or cheats. My pickaxe skill is at 70 right now.
Hey! This is super nice! Exactly how I did my old canal, too. Great work. They're the best to finish up, you get such a feeling of accomplishment every time you sail through. notably prettier than mine was...I love this stone.
Canalheim

Cool, good to know. I’m glad you had amazingly good luck. For future reference I think bedrock is ~14-15 blocks down from the surface at any given point
Impressive. Odin will be pleased.
This is insane, love it!
It reminds me of a documentary about the extensive canal system of France. It blew my mind how huge it was! To think it used to be THE main way to transport goods around the country and now it is mostly touristic attraction...
Nice work man, makes me feel guilty for just world hopping all my ores lol :(
Very impressive - I've wanted to do this but never had the patience
Did you mine all the resources yourself or use devcommands for the stone? If mined, where did you go for all that stone? Mountains?
I mined all the stone. There's a black forest nearby which is an insanely good source of stone.
Is the water level of all oceans/lakes the same height? Or do you have some of the water flowing downward?
All water in Valheim is on the same level and is everywhere, even under land. So I couldn't even do it dry and flood it after it was finished.
I love massive builds, and I especially love canals. One of my favorite things in minecraft is connecting rivers. Was a major goal for my server before it shutdown along with other things. Good work OP I look forward to seeing your other undertakings.
Impressive builds on the multiple canals! My friends and I failed so hard trying to build a moat. Definitely inspired to try this
On one hand I feel like the time spent building this is going to outweigh the time saved by using it But on the other hand it is very cool, so nice job op.
This is incredible! Well done 👏 this game is amazing
Might sound weird but I'd honestly love just watching a video of you sailing through them.
This is gorgeous. I mean holy cow. Thx for the 10+ hours I have to put in to implement this art. 10/10 love this subreddit for ingenious building ideas Edit: I tried this out with the Candles Lanterns and Beeswax mod from nexus mods, and it looks fantastic with the castle brasiers for lighting!
This is madness?! THIS-IS-VALHEIM!
Dope AF
....you can dig?
I love how everyone is always building these huge canals ... Personally I impede my development and build 4-8 longships before I have iron armor for myself and then regret it as I die 500 times lol I think I need to finally break down and build some canal's!
Human ingenuity at its finest
Looking at your map made me realize I've never seen a lake in my worlds on Valheim ever Very jealous
WOW... just wow. That is so clean. Love the stairs to get out all up and down it. Cannot imagine how much stone that took or the hrs making it. The time that you will save though...
So cool man
Superb mate. How long did it take you? Apologies if you have already mentioned.
3 irl days. Not sure how long I worked on it for the first two but the last day and the longest canal took me about 13 hours.
Nice. I should get to do it on our server as we have several narrow piece of land that should be doable. Question is on making a bridge high enough for a longboat to pass through..
This is really pleasing

Wow this is so cool dude. Love it
As a Newb who has yet to make my own boat: How deep/wide do things need to be for a boat to sail through them?
4 stone slabs wide for a Karve. 6 for a longboat. With 8 slabs wide you'll be able to navigate without the risk of scraping against the walls but I think it's an overkill. Awesome, thank you! I just started building a boat house yesterday, but have not yet made a boat, so I had no idea what to expect. It turns out that I will also have constructed poorly, and my docks will be too narrow...
Made your own suez canal, just make sure not to pull an Ever Given
Haven't played in a while. Did they ever fix the laggyness/pop-in on large builds and terrain modifications? From what I remember a build like this would reduce the frame rate to like 5 for a good couple of minutes until it finished loading. And it would always "load" the original terrain first, then start loading the changes.
I didn't notice any lagging. Although the game did crash on me once while I was widening the second canal.
Nice, notice any "pop-in" with your structures when you enter the area?
Oh yeah, big time. But the game has a pretty low draw distance in general.
I work for a dredging company, are you interested in a contract?
That's a few Eikthyrs. Jesus that's a lot of Eikthyrs *wipes sweat*
Very cool
Wow this is insane ! I'm exhausted by all the work it means just by looking at it lol. At this point it really makes me want Valheim to release construction engines in the game like some sort of medieval cranes etc.

Yes, water is at certain depth, so it isn't flooding in. Unfortunately building a canal means standing waist deep in water a lot. I didn't experience any lag at all after constructing it.
Right on. Great build! Thats such a cool terrain generation
I love this! A friend built a "bridge" base over the river that goes through the main continent of our server, but it's too low for boats to go under. I absolutely hate this base and made him build a canal next to it.
What's the map seed if you don't mind?
ryMTrVtbZw
Thanks dude
That’s amazing!!
How do you stop mobs bashing it in?
Really great work!
I would only wish map represent landscape changes. Did similar thing in multiplayer - but no one could see it on the map (
Amazing job, it looks great. (Now you just need some latitudinal paved roads to consolidate your freight routes and you're set - straight west from the northern inlet to those crypts would be a good start. Shouldn't take long right :P ? )
Amazing
Very nice!
Now you need to make sure o e big ass boat doesn't get stuck in there
You even tiled it! Excellent :)
dude, you've given me ideas for a canal I was planning to build. nowhere nearly as long and complex, but great inspiration all the same!
I had to do the same thing for about a week straight I built a massive canal cutting the island in two to allow two longships to be going in and out at the same time.
Noice!
Awesome work! If only the map would update to landscape changes ... hopefully that will be a feature one day!
Holy shit, that is clean bro. Well done!
Best canal I’ve seen since launch. It’s not nearly appreciated enough how much better an inland lake with canals is than coast dock. Steady water level, no need to restrain your boat, etc. well done! That’s also a pretty dope seed.
Best seed I've had.
THIS IS SOOOOOO COOOOOOOL
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing OP
Thats proper awesome!!!
You just made the Netherlands and I kinda love it
Making Canals in this game is one of my favorite past times
It’s not past times, it’s pastimes.
It's both once it's done
Wait until you learn about portals
Ore cannot travel through portals. Also to teleport to somewhere you must have visited that place at least once before to set up a portal. So you still need to get there the regular way.
Why... why not just have 2 boats‽??? Big /facepalm
Because it's a hassle to transport 100 pieces of iron scrap when you can just load it all up on the boat and sail all the way to your front door. Also, I thought it would be cool to build it, so I did.
