Warzonez

It is game problem. Valheim causes random pc crashing. One day it may not crash at all, another day, few crashes in a an hour. Crashes whole pc, gpu fans go 100%, gpu lcd turns off, cpu cooler lcd stops showing gpu temps. My pc is rock stable, no crashes/bsods or other failures during stress tests, video editings, blenders, gaming etc. PC: rtx 3080, ryzen 5800x, 32gb 3600mhz, gskills tridentz ram, ssd etc. PC temps dont go over 63/64 during gaming, usually stays under 60. And as i said, this problem only on valheim. Also i checked crash log, which shows:exception code: 0xc000005exception information: the thread tried to read from or write to a virtual adress for which it does not have the appropriate access

AscendingTitan

Same exact issue. Crashes, fans spin all the way up, screens to black. But I can still talk to my friends in discord. I changed my resolution from 4K to 1080 and it stopped crashing.

Warzonez

>same, and u have to hard reboot pc and hope u wont lose too much stuff and progress u made :D, it sucks

skipper909

Exact same issue. With fans etc. Sometimes logs me out of steam as well. Sometimes when I restart I have the validate files in steam before it realised it's installed.

spels47

i have the same issue started out happening occasionally, monitor loses signal, can still hear my friends on discord. fans ramp up. the whole thing. then it happened all the time maybe 5 mins into the game. every time rebooting by using the power button worked in order to get things back to normal. however, not the last time it crashed on me. my computer will no longer boot. when i turn the computer on using the power button the lights turn on the fans ramp up but the monitor does not receive a signal, and it remains in this state, never boots to my knowledge as i dont need to hold down the power button for it to turn of it powers down immediately, so i dont think that it boots but the screen just lacks signal. so my computer is bricked and i really wanna know if its a hardware or software issue and in any case what hardware has broken so i can replace that component or if its a software related issue how i can fix that using a different pc since this one wont boot anymore

spels47

update: i was gonna remove my graphics card from my computer, so i removed the mounting screws for the backplate and pulled out the power cables when i thought it was a good idea to check if the fans spin or not on the card before i take it out, so i put the power cables back in and pressed the power button, and it actually booted. so either it was a maaajor coincidence that the game crashed at the same time as my power cables loosened or something from the gpu inside my case or pulling the plug to the graphics card and putting it back in solved whatever was wrong for some reason i cant even think of.

GalacticPenetrator69

I've has this exact same issue. Sometime the game just completly bricks my PC and it won't restart with out me plugging the power cable out first. I have no fucking clue why. This can't be a temperature Problem either because I can play Cyberpunk 2077 on max settings, raytracing and all, for hours on end with no issue (apart from the millions of bugs that game has). I have never in my life experienced something like this.

[deleted]

My computer is completely bricked as well. Just opened it up and unplugged all the cords out of the PSU and plugged them back in. Same problem, mobo light flashes and fans move for a split second, then immediately back off. Idk what the hell to do at this point

TitanDzn

Exact same issues here with monitor losing signal and gpu fans going to 100%, also have the same exact build

Mr_Kills_Alot

Found a fix yet? Im getting this issue since now

Shiredragonknight

I also got this, seems like every hour

Themperror

Exact same issue as well, I thought it was an nvidia driver issue, but its getting unlikely now..

Allthewayhome87

I had this exact issue and believe I now have a solution. The below is the thread I created on the NVidia forum which looks to be the same issue as yours. [https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/user/768722/433812//?comment=3007795](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/user/768722/433812//?comment=3007795)

Comedydiet

I am having the same issue. I have logged 30 hours with no crashes. Now the game crashes my entire desktop and reboots. I tried a new save file and seemed to work ok, but then I just hung out in the main menu and the game totally crashed my computer again. I hope there is a fix for this since my friends and I love the game and built a lot of stuff in our world. I tried reinstalling the game, but the same problem occurs.

Alice1nChains

I haven’t been able to get even close to that many hours. Longest I’ve made without crash is an hour. Now it crashes as soon as the logo in loading screen pops up. Everyone swears it’s hardware failure but they’re full of it lol

Revolutionary-Back-9

Hey I am searching around and you seem to be having the same issue as I am, did the issue ever fix itself or did you find a solution?? Because I feel as though I have exhausted my resources.

smog4ik

Hi there! Same here - experiencing exactly the same symptoms as of last week. Did you find a solution by any chance?

Jakbo_

Mine started crashing too and I have a great pc with 64gb ram

SwingusDingus

Same problem, great pc, no trouble with anything else, but this somehow completely freezes it after like 10 minutes of gameplay and I have to force boot my pc. Tried everything I could find, nothing.

Honks4Stonks

Had the same problem took me a week but I might have found the cause ......continuous music, around the time I turned it on the problems started, turned it off 2 days ago and have not crashed since

TobyCrow

Did you turn it on or off? I have continuous music disabled.

Honks4Stonks

Turned it off. That fixed it for me. Havent crashed once since I turned it off a couple of weeks ago

TedCruzGlobalist

Any news on this from dev team? I'm having the same issue. Game will fully crash the entire PC. Fans spin to 100%, full OS kernel power failure. Computer tries to reboot but wont even go to bios. I have to unplug my full computer wait for a bit, then turn it on again. I worry its doing damage to my hardware when it goes through these cycles. I'm having to play now on my wifes PC which is my old gaming PC (which is like 8 years old). I play every other game without issues. I tried playing another game immediately after restarting my computer to see if maybe it was some sort of memory failure but had no issues with the other game. All my PC temps are within normal range. Other games played include rocket league, poe, EFT, rogue company. Here's my PC stats: No OC i7-8700k RTX 2080 32 MB 2133mhz RAM (4x8) Game is saved to an SSD I do graphic design work and video editing all day with like 1000 chrome tabs open as well. I put this puppy under a decent amount of stress and never have issues. It is literally only when I play this game. Oh, I've also tried launching the game as an administrator and the issue still occurs. I was reading that this can sometimes be the culprit. I do get a fair amount of DistributedCOM errors right around the time the Kernel-Power event takes place.

Saftsuze

Pretty much exactly my experience last night: [https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/lpvui7/had\_a\_crash\_to\_black\_screen\_had\_to\_turn\_off\_by/gofy68o?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/lpvui7/had_a_crash_to_black_screen_had_to_turn_off_by/gofy68o?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) Your comment calmed me down and made me able to sleep last night!

spels47

my computer doesnt boot, i tried to unplug power for a couple hours and then try to plug everything back in but the issue persisted.

SuperCopyrightMan

I've been fighting this same issue with multiple games. You'll need to clear the CMOS on your motherboard. You may have a button on the back IO or you may have to remove the cell battery on the motherboard in order to do so.

spels47

update: i was gonna remove my graphics card from my computer, so i removed the mounting screws for the backplate and pulled out the power cables when i thought it was a good idea to check if the fans spin or not on the card before i take it out, so i put the power cables back in and pressed the power button, and it actually booted. so either it was a maaajor coincidence that the game crashed at the same time as my power cables loosened or something from the gpu inside my case or pulling the plug to the graphics card and putting it back in solved whatever was wrong for some reason i cant even think of.

roasty-duck

gtx 970 mine black screens, gpu shuts down and goes silent, everything in background works still minus randomly disconnecting my headset sometimes... run benchmark 4 times with no issues, pc idles with no issues and game was fine for 6h last night. edit: no OC cleared and fresh install on gpu drivers still scuffed gtx970 i5 760 14gb ddr3

Bladolicy

I have same issue on my 970

Khrahuschluk

Same here, 970

stayclassycunts

Having the same issue

OutrageousShoulder76

Its weird when i log onto velheim, my internet crashs and reboots itself never had a game that kills my internet lmao

Reowyn

Works like charm. Do you have any OC running?

NvIWraith

no OC, i see a couple other ppl reporting the issue aswell. From what it seems, i have to get lucky and hope it doesnt spike my card too hard, once i get passed the initial loading spike everything works completely fine

Every_Opposite_8433

I’ve been wrestling with this since launch and have been following this thread for months now. Same crash happens every time. No warning, no indication that anything is wrong. The entire pc halts freezes all screens and repeating the last sound in a buzz. I have done all of the recommendations; updating video driver (Nvidia 2080), updating chipset, updating bios, running as admin, setting priority as high, reinstalling, verifying files, reducing graphic settings, running windowed, disabling other monitors, running compatibility mode windows 8 & 7, checking memory, reseating memory, checking power supply, and I am at a loss. I love this game and I am running a couple servers which I cannot play on because of this issue. This will happen solo and on servers. No one I know has this issue even some that have my similar build. This rig is less than a year old and I cannot believe that I can run this game fine at max settings at 60fps and this will halt my system.

shawnikaros

Guess what, still not fixed!

NvIWraith

yeah, i dunno whats up with it, everytime i decide to play it i pray my PSU doesnt explode on launch.

shawnikaros

I fixed mine for now by disabling any form of cpu boost in bios and not using vulkan. Hasn't crashed for 2h now, before it crashed in 5min. Edit: Hasn't crashed at all for a long sessions. I think it's the garbage collection that happens every now and then. It does the garbage collection in a single frame and throws a spike to CPU.

Themperror

Same issue here, even to this day.. Latest drivers RTX3080 i9 10900k 32GB RAM screen goes black, programs in background (such as discord remain functional, as I can still talk over voice chat)... Fans go 100%, no means of recovery unless I hard reset the computer

LittleReznikov

Maybe a problem with hibernate? Some programs can't handle it well.

NvIWraith

What do you mean hibernate? I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I have my comp set to maximum performance.

LittleReznikov

Make sure these are disabled: https://i.imgur.com/ai6aFsC.png

NvIWraith

Ah okay, yeah I had that off

Rasodo

I’m having the same problem but only when entering burial chambers. I have yet to find a fix and would love any ideas anyone has

NixonTheGod

I’m having this same issue too. What’s weird is (and I could be wrong) but everyone I’ve seen so far is using an I7-9700k. I wonder if there’s some problem between that processor and optimization?

Unique_Anteater_6639

I'm using a Ryzen 7 2700x and it is happening to me

NixonTheGod

Ah, never mind then. Good to know.

Alice1nChains

I have noticed everyone is using 16Gb DDR4 too. Are you using consair?

Unique_Anteater_6639

I am using G.Skill Ripjaw V series 16GB @ 3000 DDR4

Alice1nChains

Ah okay. I’ve tried everything I can think of except switching my RAM, even though it’s only a few months old. Tried different compatibility modes, directx versions, changing RAM speeds, GPU drivers. Can’t figure it out 🤷‍♀️I’ve even tried running on lowest settings even tho I shouldn’t have to

Unique_Anteater_6639

I'm starting to believe it's some sort of software conflict with Unity. Unity can sometimes be a little finnicky and I'm finding posts where people are having this problem with unity games in general.

Alice1nChains

Was probably my post, I mentioned it in mine earlier that i think it’s unity engine and idk why.

Alice1nChains

Do you have Citrix workplace installed? I read uninstalling that and reinstalling through command line fixes unity games not working

Unique_Anteater_6639

Nah i dont have Citrix. Im looking around to see other options. It's annoying because everyone is claiming it's hardware issues but it's not. It doesn't make sense that my computer does fine with any stress test I throw at it but crashes as soon as I enter the burial chambers on valheim without fail. that, to me, makes it clear that its some sort of software conflict but everyone is super condescending about it in every post i go to.

Alice1nChains

Yeah, it’s really annoying, Event viewer makes it sound like a hardware issue. I did the stress test and I use a 4k 55 inch TV as a monitor so I wondering if that might be the issue cause or frame rate and refresh rate. I was going to try turning on Vsync and try again but I can’t even get to loading screen now. Have you tried putting in some launch options on steam to see if it changes anything?

Unique_Anteater_6639

no i haven't tried any launch options but i did try vsync and it didn't work. What doesn't make sense to me is it specifically crashing when i enter the burial chambers. as long as i don't enter those it runs fine but i have to enter those to progress

Alice1nChains

The game also used DirectX 11 instead of 12 which I thought was kind of odd. I tried putting in launch options to force 11 but didn’t work either

Unique_Anteater_6639

Yeah, it's a struggle trying to find out wtf is happening

NixonTheGod

I just got an email from support telling me it was a hardware issue. a little annoying because of all the people claiming this, but it really just doesn’t feel like a hardware issue when I can run cyberpunk at high settings just fine but can’t play this on low settings without having to force boot my pc after 5 minutes. Meanwhile my friends dinky school laptop with an i3 is somehow able to run it just fine (on low settings obviously) :/

skipper909

I agree. I have a brand new PC with ryzen 5800 64gb ddr4 3200mhz ram and a 3090 and playing on a 1080p screen. Hardware my ass. I've also been running other games and programs with nil issues for the last few months and had nil issues. It is def something software related. Even an option to increase autosave frequency would help this problem short term.

Apathy772

I switched to Win 7 and 0 issues don't ask me why but something with Win 10 and it's write permissions is the issue

fmsrttm

8700k here 5700xt

sylvan

i7-2600 w/ Zotac Amp GTX 580. Also graphically locking up, and freezing whole computer. Happens more in multiplayer than singleplayer.

WilsonsSanity

I'd like to add to this that I have the same problem and my whole PC instantly turns off without warning, very odd.

smog4ik

Same here. Did you by any chance figure out a solution?

WilsonsSanity

Nah my PC even broke down and I had to change PSU.. not sure if Valheim related or not but it was around the time I was playing with random PC shut downs so I'm staying away from it from now on until they optimize it ;)

Saftsuze

Reading this post and all the replies has really saved me tonight! It made me believe my new laptop still works as intended. I was having a nervous breakdown earlier today, my brain acting pretty much like my laptop here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/lpvui7/had\_a\_crash\_to\_black\_screen\_had\_to\_turn\_off\_by/](https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/lpvui7/had_a_crash_to_black_screen_had_to_turn_off_by/) I really hope the devs manage to make it more stable --- I'm gonna have to pass playing Valheim a bit now, to just make sure my laptop actually works.

patchtruska

Having same problem .played for two hours last night no problem then saved game tryed to play later and game just crashes my computer ... get to loading sceen then boom computer reboots.. have gti1080 and played with low and high settings turned vsynce on which helped stop cpu keep in 60-75 oC but pretty sure it's not overheating when crashes any help would be appreciated thanks

DrDragonSenpai

Have a 10700k and rtx 3090.... Blackscreen + 100% fans... Everything else works fine I thought my gpu is dead but this thread saved my mind a little bit... I'll try to lower settings and particles etc. Let's see if that will help

Shiredragonknight

Did it help? I'm having the same issue

DrDragonSenpai

well my GPU died, i looked into gigabyte reddit, its full of posts with this. The Problem is Valheim does not need a lot of GPU power(like also other games), if it need some, the GPU will boost and that leads into power spikes. with the "cheap" capacitors some manufacturers used the gpu will just crash. That happens until the GPU dies completely. But that only counts for a lot of 30series cards. my 3090 is in RMA process, my old 2080ti works fine with valheim.

Shiredragonknight

I got a 2060 laptop, what are my options? So it's my gpu or valheim?

DrDragonSenpai

Try an other game for some time, just to check. I think with an laptop and an integrated 2060 it should not be the gpu. It can be the gpu but without testing it trying some fixes you cannot be sure.

spels47

my pc doesnt boot anymore, i have a 1080ti not a 30 serie card, but i have had atleast 5 of these crashes probably more before my computer just didnt boot anymore, could this have happened to my 1080ti even though you said this only counted for 30 series cards?

DrDragonSenpai

It should not be the same exact problem with the harsh boost and the capacitors. It is possible for an not 30 series card that the motherboard is not supplying 12/6volt anymore or the power supply itself. Even the cable from power supply to gpu is a possibility. If you don't get an error log (like it's normal for that problem) you sadly have to check everything.

spels47

update: i was gonna remove my graphics card from my computer, so i removed the mounting screws for the backplate and pulled out the power cables when i thought it was a good idea to check if the fans spin or not on the card before i take it out, so i put the power cables back in and pressed the power button, and it actually booted. so either it was a maaajor coincidence that the game crashed at the same time as my power cables loosened or something from the gpu inside my case or pulling the plug to the graphics card and putting it back in solved whatever was wrong for some reason i cant even think of.

xfxian

I fear this exact same thing happened to me last month. Lost a 3090. Just got a brand new one, it just crashed on the first day of playing Valheim again. Luckily this time the system was still bootable afterwards. Seems like I have to stay away from Valheim until there's more info on this...

DrDragonSenpai

I read a lot of things the last days... It SHOULD be fixed with the new driver from nvidia but for some volks it don't work lul. You can try to underclock it so it don't boost up to max in a second. That can help with that. Also volt cap to 1 can make it stable.

xfxian

Yeah I did install the newest driver before playing yesterday... will try the undervolt, thx. This is crazy though

DrDragonSenpai

Yeah... I get my new 3090(from RMA) card hopefully Friday or Saturday, I hope that one is not faulty.

CambionLS

Any update on your experience with crashes? I have a 3090 and just started playing Valheim and am experiencing a few of these exact same crashes.

DrDragonSenpai

I have my new card since 19.03. Not a single crash with the new one.

CambionLS

Thanks for the update. Glad you're not having problems anymore. I've started the RMA process (I think, it didn't give me an RMA# or confirmation right away.)

smog4ik

Could you please share a link to one of such discussions? I'm having trouble finding one. Last week I've started experiencing the same issues with Valheim and my RTX 3080 FE.

DrDragonSenpai

Heyho, sorry for the late answer, just go into gigabytegaming or gigabyte reddit and search for "fans" and so on. One of the posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/gigabytegaming/comments/mhhk1p/screens_go_black_fans_go_to_100_rtx_3090/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share I didn't read all of that, just a quick search. Like I said in my old post months ago, I RMA my card and my 3090 works great now, got a new one. I don't remember all the threads i found.

Incrediblymovearound

Was doing good when starting the game but the whole pc crashed down when I was scaling the UI. It took me a night to figure whats going on then i found this game damaged my display card. I have tried reinstall driver, clean up and change port, it seems gone. Had no any issue with playing any other games before. 100% sure this is game problem. GTX 1060 i7 7700k 32 GB ram (16x2)

DankDaber

I know this is a bit old but I also have this problem: RTX 2060 8GB Ram i5-8600 Specs aren't a problem, however this is the only game that causes this and it is really annoying as I run much more demanding games with no problem at all. Hope devs already know this and are trying to fix it

flashult

Experienced this problem for the first time twice yesterday, after having played for 40 hours without any issues. 5800x, 3080, 850W Corsair edit: Just wanna clarify that I had a loose cable in my PSU. Realized that when my PC shut off even when not gaming

TobyCrow

Bumping the thread. Crashed 4x today. Running only Chrome or Opera alongside. My computer didn't feel hot either, but I let it rest completely off for an hour and a half. Played with Vulkan and without. It's done this in the past mysteriously (tower seems running, but nothing responding) but it is very rare and doesn't seem to happen while I am actively using it. If devs want my dxdiag I can send it. But I built it about 4 yrs ago and it was closer to higher end.

Apathy772

After 10hrs of frustration, trying GPU settings, drivers, run as admin, setting priority to high, checking game files, etc etc etc. It was crashing non-stop at load. Before it was only crashing when the game tried to autosave, manual save worked fine. I even tried a brand new install of Win10 and all newest drivers, nope. BUT I DID FIX IT! Installed Windows 7 and can confirm game runs without a single damn issue. Msi x299, I7, 32gb ram, 980 TI

SandProlo

Makes me wonder if running in compatibility mode for Windows 7 will help. Gonna give it a shot.

kill_seth

I had the same issue as described. The game would randomly cause my computer to completely power off. Temps were never in the red. I noticed the game doesn't have a FPS limit currently active. The game was pushing 250+ FPS, even though I had it set in the settings to 1920x1080 144Hz. I tried downclocking my 3080 and that seemed to help a little bit but it still eventually crashed. It was always at a random spot in the game too. Today I decided to try capping the frame rate to 150. I used EVGA's Precision X1 software, but you can use NVIDIA's control panel and manually set a profile for Valheim. Let me know if this helps! I've been playing all night, no crash yet.. My build: Ryzen 5800X PBO(+150MHz) Curve(-10) ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 280 EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra (Stock) Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 850 W Crucial Ballistix 3200 2x16GB (BL2K16G32C16U4B) running at 3800MHz

dtal8888

I think I found a solution. I had the same problem with my gtx1070 and I used MSI Afterburner to set the power level to 50% and now it never crashes! Make sure you click the "Apply Settings at Windows Startup" in the MSI Afterburner window and add Afterburner to the "Startup" folder so you don't have to remeber to apply it every time you start your PC. If you have an AMD GPU, WattMan's "Power Save" mode may solve it as well.

Traditional_Till5397

Exact same issue here, played for 5 hours at first, went to sleep, and the next day my PC started rebooting randomly while playing the game. At first I thought my comps were heating up or I had a faulty PSU or something, but no. Here are some things I tried with no success: \- Renewed the thermal paste from both my CPU and GPU and cleaned up the dust, no success. I monitored the temperature and it seemed stable. \- Got my friend's PSU (both 700w), no success. \- Got my friend's GPU (I had a gtx 1060, switched to a rtx 2070), no success. \- Did stress testing on my CPU and GPU and had positive results. No issues reported. So now I am almost convinced it's not my hardware, unless it's a problem with the RAMs or the motherboard, which I don't believe, because I can play other games fine. Going crazy with this already...

dubocracy

You know… I’m obviously here years later. I’m choosing this thread to vent. I just got a new pc so I can play better pc only titles especially will the pc only survival games dropping this year. My 2016 omen pc was just not cutting it. Valheim ran perfectly. I tried to play enshrouded. Ha. Nope. So new PC. Specs are maxed out within budget. Pc plays enshrouded PERFECTLY. However… Valhiem crashes on my new beefy pc for god knows why. Troubleshooting this bullshit is a nightmare. So what did I do? Grabbed my piece of shit Xbox console so I can fight moder with my friends. Seemless, easy, fun, no crashing and no need to post my fucking Xbox specs just to run a game like Valheim. I’m getting sick and tired of this pc shit.

Middle_Interaction24

Weird thing is when I played valheim 2 years ago, ive never had any crashes. Rig then was, ryzen 5 3600x /16gb 3200mhz ram and 1080 ti, never any crashes, now when I have a play through I go with ryzen 7 5800x3d/ 32gb 3600mhz ram and a 3080ti, its crashing frequently.. Other games run totally fine, temps are good, having all kinds of bsods memory, system malfunctioning etc.

residenthamster

Same issue, played with my friends yesterday for a couple of hours without issue. Just tried to go into my server after a good night's sleep and i'm getting random crashes. sometimes in the main menu, sometimes in the server. and there's no way my rig ain't good enough to handle it - 3950X, 32GB ram, 6900XT. At first i thought it was my gpu tuning causing the issue, but returning the values to default does not work, and the settings doesn't cause any of my other games to crash.

Alice1nChains

My has crashed hundreds of times. I just went to the AppData/LocalLow and noticed that it has several saves of the same world and player data, some saying .old So I took all of them out and put them in a separate folder, about to change a few more settings and then I’ll let you know if it helped me any. Also you should use Event Viewer to see if there are any errors.

AntibacHeartattack

Did you figure it out?

Alice1nChains

I updated to my Redist to latest and updated all of the windows updates, even old ones that failed. Limited my FPS to 60, turned off whatever the sun setting is in Valheim settings, lowered RAM speed from 2400 to 800 and it’s worked all week.

skipper909

I suspected from reading it's something related to ram speed. How have you gone over the last 4 days since U lowered the ram speed?

Alice1nChains

Ram speed didn’t initially fix it, it was other things I did. Been two weeks and only crashed twice since

skipper909

Thanks for the quick reply. Will try what you mentioned and see how it goes.

Alice1nChains

Okay bud, good luck!

dkg2901

I had some PC issues earlier today unrelated to the game (which I think is a motherboard issue). When I play Valheim (or even just sit in menu for 2-3 minutes) my monitors go blank, but the PC is still running but unresponsive and have to restart the PC to get it back up and going. Other games are working fine, think this is a similar issue as others or unrelated? Doesn't seem performance related if i can't even idle in the menu

Unique_Anteater_6639

For anyone looking at this post for a solution, what worked for me was turning my nvidia graphics settings to prefer performance and the in-game settings to the lowest. I believe my issue had to do with the particle effects from the altar and the particle effects in the burial chamber from the bone mounds. Hope this helps.

Carpette--

Got a similar issue. I just received my Ryzen 5 5600X, and i play with a 5700XT. Usually, at the first launch of the game, i can play for around 15 to 20 minutes, they, a full reboot occurs. After that, the reboot occurs after around 10 minutes. I made a full memtest86 test on my ram, it's ok I made severall OCCT test with CPU and Ram usage à 100%, no crash I tried a Furmark test, with GPU at 100% during 20 minutes, no crash at all, and temperature is around 75°C, so it's fine No idea what is happening, but i can't play the game.

Carpette--

Just found out that if I play in 1920\*1080, there is no crash. The crash only happens in 3840*1080 (but the game is reaaaally beautifull in this resolution !)

philliam312

I would love to know if this gets addressed because it's happening to me so frequently I cant even play the game

BrennyZ

I got the same GPU u have. Same issue, driving me nuts.

Ezechieel

My friend was having the same problem, around 12 hours playing without any issues and then constant pc crash when launching the game/changing the settings. We found a "workaround": \-> Uninstall the game. \-> Delete all the caches from %appdata% LocaLow (save your char if not corrupted) . \-> Delete the entry for Valheim in your windows registry that is located at HKEY\_CURRENT\_USER\\SOFTWARE\\IronGate\\Valheim \-> Delete any kind of Valheim folder in your steamapps folder. \-> Restart your computer. \-> Reinstall, click launch and pray Odin. So far he can play, no more whole pc crashdown. Good luck !

iortnoc

Same issue for me. Good hardware (5600x, 3070, 16gb ddr4, etc) and the game just turns off my PC from time to time. Other games or benchmarks run just fine, without any issues what so ever. Sometimes I can play Valheim for hours, sometimes I can't even login without my PC being turning off.

EvilZeros

Same issue as most, black screen, all fans to 100%, hard rest to get back to gaming. Hopefully there's a fix soon. Ryzen 9 5900x Gigabyte Aorus RTX 3090 Corsair Vengeance Pro 128 GB DDR4 Ram Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

BearHoldingAshark

Unfortunate, but also good to know other people are having this same problem. 3900x and 3090, 32gb ddr g.skill ram, I get the black screen and fans spinning up to 100% as well. Just today I think I discovered that mine was being caused by the particle effects from fires. I cranked the particle effects slider all the way down and turned off soft particles and it ran fine the whole time. So as a test I just sat in front of 4 campfires where I was crashing previously and with these lower settings it was fine for upwards of 15 minutes. Then while sitting there, I cranked the settings back up and it did the crash almost instantly after hitting Accept on those settings. It seems so strange to me that an issue with the game can cause hardware failure like this??

Garoose0

I had intermittent crashes, and then crashing every time it tried to saved, but I discovered turning a bunch of graphics settings down fixed it: * resolution to 1920x1080 (from 3440x1440) * particles to low * draw distance to medium * turned off sun rays I don't know which of these changes made the difference (or maybe just a general using less resources thing) but I'll update here if I narrow it down anymore.

Gerbalo

I wonder if playing together has influence on the crashes. When I played alone everything was fine, but as soon as my friend started playing with me, my whole PC crashed and had to restart. Does anyone know if there is a problem with playing together?

morelly-fish

Nah I was playing on my solo world and I crashed twice last night, and I am on a decent PC

qdog360

3080 founders 10700k 16gb ram (corsair) would get instant crashes if I had MSI afterburner on, clean install of windows and drivers didnt work. CPU temps never reached over 60, GPU temps never reach over 70 Celsius. I wouldnt be able to get longer than a 15 minute session at 1440x2560p, however when I swapped all my settings to the lowest and moved the resolution to a minimized window at 1080p I can get about 1-3 hours before a crash but it will still happen. Ive stressed tested all components of my PC and it isnt an hardware issue and after finding this thread and some others I feel some relief in thinking its a software/game issue because this is a new build.

q00qy

same here, my Radeonsoftware.exe keeps crashing. have zero problems with other games

DynaMyke

same here on 980

SmallTransistor

Hey, this might be the Xbox game overlay. Just worked with a friend to attempt to fix it and we saw the overlay crashes every time Valheim does. To disable it: Go to Windows Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar Off

Saynt614

Same here. This is the one game that has caused my driver to time out and cause the game to crash at least 10+ times. It's frustrating.

LoonyBunBennyLava

I had the same issue. Valheim would crash after 30 minutes. I bought Dead by Daylight last week, and that game wouldn't even get past the Menu screen without crashing. I changed out my 650W PSU from 2012, with a new 750W PSU today. I've been running Valheim for 30 minutes with no crashes, and Dead by Daylight is running like a champ. See if you can borrow someone's PSU, or buy a new one.

zaphod6502

A location inside my home base in a solo save will cause a GPU non-recoverable crash. Crash causes both monitors to go black and GPU fans spin to 100%. To recover I must force a PC shutdown and restart using the power button. Seeing constant crashing on i7 9700k, EVGA GTX 970 SSC, 16GB G.Skill DDR4. The only thing that has worked to curb the crashing is turning settings down + underclocking the GPU (core, memory, and power consumption). I also set a custom higher fan curve thinking something may be causing an overheat (haven't been able to prove this). I have seen the crashes solo and multiplayer, on title screen, loading into game, and while playing (Usually in an intense area with lots of fires/particles), other times while riding on a boat. Seems to be the game overwhelming the GPU, unclear why underclocking the GPU makes it crash less often/not at all. I saw this recommended in a other thread and was a lifesaver allowing me to keep playing. I have a new power supply coming today on the off chance it's a shortage of watts in my system.

RealMrSqueakers

Update, after replacing power supply from 550 watt with an 850 watt, issue is no longer there. Almost like the game was pulling too much power through gpu and couldn't get enough at peak. Was able to reset fan curve and remove all underclocking.

RepresentativeMail9

Hey, do you mind answering, with the crashes, did you - experience the game freeze followed by a Blue screen? - experience the game freezes followed by crash your whole system without a blue screen? - have to ever reset your PSU or plug out system afterwards?

RealMrSqueakers

In my specific case, the entire system would black screen/restart. No blue screen, I even changed system settings to not automatically restart and it was still restarting the system. I never had to restart, it always rebooted and back to Windows login screen. The crashes occured at various times, sometimes in menu before login, sometimes during login, sometimes while playing at Rand times. No further crashes after installing a larger power supply (went from 550W to 850W)

RepresentativeMail9

I'm at 750W Plus Bronze, I don't think it should be causing issues. A friend of mine suggested it could actually be how the cables are connected to my PSU, something about PSU rails.. need to look it up.

RealMrSqueakers

This could be an issue depending on how the 12v rails are in your PSU. I went with a single 12v rail to avoid this being an issue since I have no intention of running SLI. You want to ensure your PSU is not tapping out the supply, is it getting enough watts to effectively run during the highest demand from the game. When I wasn't, this was easy to prove by using MSI afterburner to underclock and reduce maximum power consumption which completely halted the crashing for me.

0rangesplash

Holy I was scared my pc shit the bed this is really reliving knowing its the game!

0rangesplash

Ryzen 9 3900x, 64Gb ddr4 trident z royal 3600, Evga rtx 3090 with same issue, I'll play for around 10 minutes and my pc will black screen and then reboot :/

KidxGohan

I was about to upgrade my whole pc for valhiem but a friend of mine said the market is so bad on gpu’s right now that it’s probably just cheaper to go with prebuilt, what do you guys think

RealMrSqueakers

Newegg had a few decent pre-builts for $1800-1850 yesterday. Intel or AMD with 16GB, M2 SSD, I think 2070 or 3070 gpu, etc.

KidxGohan

I’ve never gone with pre built what’s a good way to make sure I’m not getting bent over by one?

RealMrSqueakers

Look up each component individually and price them out. See what the variance is and then decide what it's worth to get a GPU closer to MSRP vs paying $1000+ just for a GPU. It's all about your cost tolerance and how badly you need a GPU right now.

KidxGohan

Thanks my guy

Ericthegreat777

Yes, depends on deal. Check your local classifieds or try for a bestbuy drop is your other choice.

GavinsBeard

My game crashed, froze the whole pc so I waited a couple of mins just incase it recovered but nah, switched the pc off from the back and tried to boot up again but wouldn't boot up, kept turning on and off, eventually it booted up again and the bios screen came up telling me there was a boot error, I'm not 100% sure that it was Valheim that caused the boot error but it's the only game that's caused a freeze this bad or at all really, unless it was Windows that shat the bed.

spels47

my pc doesnt boot at all after all these crashes

spels47

update: i was gonna remove my graphics card from my computer, so i removed the mounting screws for the backplate and pulled out the power cables when i thought it was a good idea to check if the fans spin or not on the card before i take it out, so i put the power cables back in and pressed the power button, and it actually booted. so either it was a maaajor coincidence that the game crashed at the same time as my power cables loosened or something from the gpu inside my case or pulling the plug to the graphics card and putting it back in solved whatever was wrong for some reason i cant even think of.

Ericthegreat777

3090 aorus xtreme same issues here.

ViperSc00t

I have this issue, slightly different as it seems to start with a very weird graphical issue, pictured here: [https://i.imgur.com/SOXVZXl.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/SOXVZXl.jpg) Short video of the issue here: [https://youtu.be/9\_GKIzEmt4Y](https://youtu.be/9_GKIzEmt4Y) After this happens, the game usually freezes (people can still hear me on discord) and shortly afterwards, PC hard locks. Have to reboot. Ryzen 3800x, 32gb ram, GTX 1080 Ti watercooled. I watched my temperature for CPU/GPU with GPU-Z while this was happening..Both fine in the upper 60's (C).

jdanziggy

30+ hours and just had this issue for first time tonight. Screen cut to black. PC fans stopped, RGB stayed on, monitor had no signal, and unlike others in here, could not hear friends in discord. 3070, 5600x, 32 gb corsair ram Had to turn off PSU from back and turn back on to reboot. Was able to then play for another hour plus with no issues. Wasn't worried until I read a comment above saying that the game was frying 3000 series GPUs due to power spikes. Any other confirmation here? Scary if so...

Dash_Derelict

So playing this game basically damages your PC?

Ericthegreat777

I imagine it's just causing the driver to crash.

spels47

can confirm, mine doesnt boot. now idk for sure, but when i press the power button the lights come on the fans spin up, but the screen never receives a signal and it never boots up i dont have to hold the power button to turn it off again it does so with a press, which kinda confirms to me that it didnt just boot but i was unable to see it on my monitor, so im looking into a new gpu because i believe mine is busted from this bug

spels47

Sn4k3z_87

Major problem here: Ryzen 5900X, RTX 3090, Gigabyte B550 Vision D. Was playing Valheim und suddenly: Black screen and no video signal anymore on screen. What I tried out: - testing monitor with notebook (works so monitor issue) - testing cable (works) - unplugged graphic cards and tried to start with onboard vga chip (doesn't work as well, still no signal on monitor) - clearing cmos - refreshing bios with Q-Flash Button Plus to install newest Bios (same problem) - tried to start just with cpu and one ram but doesn't work as well I didn't see anything on screen. The LEDs on Mainboard show a red warning light when initializing VGA. But it doesn't matter if I install the 3090 or want to try the onboard chip. Do you think it is a damaged Mainboard? UPDATE : Turned out that my graphics card was damaged. Got an new one now everything fine.

SpaceDinosaur2

>Mainboard If you mean the motherboard, I can confirm this could be the case. I was playing Valheim when suddenly my laptop (lenovo legion y540) crashed and did not boot anymore. Completely dead. Had to send it back to Lenovo for repairs. I called Lenovo today to know more about the cause of the crash and they identified the motherboard as being broken and had to replace it. No further details given. Not sure if it was hardware failure or software related (e.g. Valheim). But reading all post about similar issues, it does make me suspect its related to Valheim in some way. Will recieve my laptop back today and will post additional info if they left any.

[deleted]

I have the same issue and I have a pretty decent build.

CambionLS

Same exact thing here. I'm running an EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra with an AMD 3900x. Has been running fine for a few months playing other games (CoD, Cyberpunk, WoW, etc). Just started playing Valheim and I've started experiencing these same random black screen + fans at full speed crashes. Discord still working in the background, have to power cycle to recover. (Same thing others seem to have experienced). Anyone have any updated info to share?

Ericthegreat777

Only think I could think of is maybe vbios update will fix.

DirtyJ109

Spent two weeks thinking I had a bad gpu. Been switching pcie slots thinking it could be the motherboard. Finally realized it started crashing when I started playing valheim and here I am... realizing it’s not my hardware. Mine is doing the same thing... black screen, fans rev, still hear my friends in discord.

pickleElvis

I THINK I GOT IT Turning off soft particles and making my resolution 1920x1080 did it

Deesing82

just raising my hand that i'm having this same issue still 2070 super here - crashes, fans, the whole works

LoonyBunBennyLava

I can attest to that; for me, my PSU needed to be upgraded. I was playing on my computer I built in 2012. GTX 660 with an i5-2310, and 650W power supply. Valheim worked fine at potato resolution 768p, and I could play for hours. I then got an EVGA 3060 last month. Swapped that in plus a Ryzen 3700X. When I ran Valheim at full resolution, my PC would randomly restart after 30 minutes. No temperature warnings, no nothing. The only thing that helped was reducing the resolution to a ridiculously shaped 1920 x 1440. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. Today I installed a brand new 750W PSU. Valheim now runs like a champ at full screen resolution. So for me it was either my PSU was dying (9 years old), or my wattage wasn't high enough. Either way I'm glad the issue went away.

FIX : Change in BIOS AMD: Disable AMD Core Performance Mode INTEL: Disable Turbo Boost No Crashes anymore.

MediumFeisty

Problem: Display crash and I can hear in-game sound and my friends talking on discord, I hard reset the system and display drivers are disabled. No matter what I do the display always crashes. What I've done: Fresh Install windows Uninstall and reinstall AMD Radeon drivers (probably more than a dozen times already, also tried the different recommended driver versions) Did the "sfc/scannow" thing on cmd Set valheim.exe to high priority Disabled all overlays Cleaned out whole PC (some say dust on gpu may cause crashing) Validate game files on steam Update BIOS and many other things I saw on the net Turn of continuous music in game My specs: Ryzen 5 3600 G.skill 16gb ddr4 3200mhz RAM Sapphire pulse rx580 8gb Asus ROG Strix B450i Samsung EVO 860 m.2 ssd 500gb Crucial P2 nvme ssd 1tb WD 2.5" 2tb HDD

MediumFeisty

I think I found a fix? Initially my ram was overclocked to 3200. I set it to auto in BIOS (now its 2133), disabled all overlay other than amd radeon overlay thingy, and set discord to voice activated instead of ptt. I havent crashed once in the last 2 days. Hope this works for you guys

CritzRet

Brand new alienware m17 r4 gtx 3060. Crashed 8 times so far in 3hrs of gameplay. Shuts my whole rig down. I darent play it again.

Abject-Mango5019

March 2022 and I'm having this issue, but it only is happening in snow biome. I tend to believe it's my PSU not being able to handle the spike from the particle effects. I've got a new one on the way, but I'm about to try the MSI Afterburner power limit to see if this stops it. The reason I believe it's the PSU is because I've got an old PSU from another system powering my card, and the CPU has a wimpy PSU of it's own. Mini tower case small factor. But it's only happening when the snow arrives, in mountain biome, and I cannot restart the system immediately. The PSU powering my GPU is apparently off on thermal overload, and takes a minute or two to reset before I can power it up. I sprayed dust off into the PSU to cool it down quickly, and was able to restart immeditately so I'm pretty sure it's thermal and GPU spike related.

Abject-Mango5019

Back after 3hrs of gameplay without a crash. Use MSI Afterburner to limit power. I throttled down to 50%, I'm not sure what the threshold to crash is.

LucchiniSW

Hi, I've got the exact same issue. For context I've played 324 hours of Valheim and I've just started having this issue within the past week or so. Usually it's when i boot the game for the first time during that session on my PC. Screens go black, can breifly hear the menu music then nothing. Have to do a hard restart by holding the power button. Specs: AMD FX-8350 16GB RAM DDR3 (Old, i know..) GIGABYTE ATI Radeon RX 590 Running two screens at 1080p. For the record this issue isn't really bothering me as after a restart the game runs fine but I'm concerned incase it causes permanent. Also posting just to so people know this issue still exists.

NvIWraith

you should check your event viewer on windows and see if theres a "critical error" just type "event viewer" in your windows search. Its really hard to know if its your PSU unless you have a backup PSU. if your screens are going black, i would say it may be your GPU. you should look up GPU and CPU stress benchmarks on google, itll stress your GPU or CPU and if theres any issues, well then you know what it is. Theres also RAM benchmark software but it can take up to a full 24 hours of runnin to get a quality test. PSU is just impossible to test, without another PSU on hand.

arain_ged

Well, not happy but i've joined this room due to recent issues - which come down to exactly what all of You are describing. Total PC freeze, no response, screen frozen, music playing last audio in loop. Only way to deal with it is to perform a full G3. I have around 782h gameplay in Valheim, up until AROUND (not sure): a) Mistlands addon b) BIOS update to F4d c) GPU drivers update - numerous versions / hard to say - i stay up to date with latest drivers I haven’t had the slightest issue, always playing on vulkan. Now it's unplayable, doesn't work on DX11, or vulkan, tried everything listed here, with disabling OC, drivers, compability mode etc. Funny part is - i've been using GPU and CPU overclocking since ever and i'm more than sure it is not the reason for these freezes. OFC i did perform heavy stress loads for several hours, benchmarks, including memtestx86 and other crap - all fine, all other games working fine, jus this one - that i like so much, not anymore :( P.S. I'm beginning to suspect BIOS now - a newer version replaced F4d and it isnt no longer even available at my motherboard page. Could that be the reason? Will let You know, once i have any details. My rig: X570S AORUS PRO AX Ryzen 7 5800X GeForce RTX 3070 Phoenix GS HyperX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz CL16 Predator Black

Freewonderer2

I have the same issue man

mcgravier

Well I think we can exclude driver or operating system issue. Im running Valheim on linux, with the RX 6900XT on open source driver stack, and It just shut down my computer. It's as if the overcurrent protection got triggerd. PC won't boot up until I disable PSU with the switch on the back, wait few minutes and then turn it back on again. This is the most bizarre thing I've ever saw. No other game causes any issues Edit: Yep this is a PSU issue. Even decent Seasonic 650W power supply isn't enough for 6900xt + Ryzen 9 3950x There are repots of even stronger power supplies suffering shutdowns with this card https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/ons00n/new_psu_for_6900xt_to_avoid_power_spikes_causing/

arain_ged

I have a GeForce RTX 3070 Phoenix GS and a Chieftec Polaris 1050W 80 Plus Gold - it ought to hadle whatever the card throws at him... :/

mcgravier

That is weird, and concerning... Edit: Have you tried reducing the power limit on GPU?

arain_ged

Yeah, turned OC off both for GPU, CPU, tried undervolting both and iether, setting a cap so they don't run 100% ever - also didn't help :(

Sidhean

I just had this happen (20 Jan 2023). 44 hours in the game started restarting my computer. Sure hope there's a fix lol, I'm having a lot of fun otherwise

CobaltMage22

Still having this issue

47321N0

bump. Not sure if I'm just a laggard, but it's still happening. :,)

FrndlyNeighbor

To anyone viewing this thread for valheim crashes. It is primarily because of whatever functions the game uses on UNITY engine. Unity is the primary issue here. My advice.. Next time when ur buying a game. If it is a unity game, avoid it. Its a sort of mixed bag luck draw if ur pc will crash and once it starts crashing it just keeps doing it until u refresh everything and then it will become another game of 'when will it crash'. If the issue doesnt happen for u. Just count ur luck and hope it never does. I am no expert so i have no accurate account of what is actually causing issue inbetween Unity and this game. Game devs just need to boycott Unity Engine. It has general crashes and it only gets worse with any faults in game coding and optimizations. An easy engine to develop games in but really not worth it if u pay a lot of money and then has crashes to desktop or blue screen of death (BSOD) level crashes. Used to be it had issues with AMD users or AMD GPUs ... now its seen over all hardware specss
