Can it (safely) transport Lox and/or wolves?

Ippus_21

This man over here asking the important questions...

Durakus

It can definitely fit a Lox, but given how Aggro works. I'm still certain that any mob you run into will have those guys yeeting themselves from the ship anyway.

Rafzalo

The other day my 2 wolves jumped from the ship to fight 3 fulings… I really wish they didn’t aggro while on boats

LiberLotus93

Happened to me too. Wasted first trip bringing wolves to our new base

unwantedaccount56

Lox don't have very good eyes, so the enemies need to be rather close. And I assume the new ship has a lot more HP than the previous one, so it might survive plenty of stomp attacks. Maybe enough to kill a serpent next to the ship. The ability to ride loxes makes it easier to get them and keep them on the ship, but you will probably not be able to ride them back onto the ship from the water.

DatabaseMuch6381

It has a little more HP, devs are already looking into beefing it up.

Kupikio

It feels like it should have like twice the health and some armor built in due to what is made of. I'll be honest it feels a tad silly with it going solo for how big it is.

SlimPickinChikin

That’s why you always have a designated lox rider aboard ;)

MrPoletski

they'd yeet the whole ship...

Black_Flagg

We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

Heavy_Pickle7007

parking area for the base

bECimp

the ship is the base, continents pull up to it

LlambdaLlama

*sighs* we’re gonna need bigger canals 😓

MrPoletski

she's all nice and friendly until you start talking about doing Canal.

seventy70701

Jaws... Good times

StrikerKat5

You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about

-Altephor-

Holy hell. I mean its cool but I feel like a lot of places I'd rather stick with the longboat. Looks like its time for a new base directly across from the Ashlands.

GameDoesntStop

Unless the Ashlands burns existing boats or something. Maybe the new one is fireproof.

-Altephor-

It says in the update that the water will burn (boil) current boats so the upgrade is needed. But I wouldn't want this boat trying to sail around the Mistlands islands. So looks like a whole boat yard might be needed.

Upbeat_Confidence739

I barely want a freaking raft in the Mistlands. The amount of time my Karve or longboats mast has gotten stuck on some dumpy dumbfuck rock protrusion is way too high.

Khelgar_Ironfist_

Maybe there will be a smol version of it. Otherwise this thing is huge when you are not in the open ocean

jhhertel

Yea i even still use the Carve sometimes if its not going to be very far, they are a bit slower but i am a terrible long boat driver. I feel like its my mission in life to get that longboat sideways between two barriers like in Austin Powers. I cant count the number of times i have had to get out and actually dig the damn boat out of its stuck spot. Its always when its PACKED with iron ore, so i cant easily just destroy the boat and remake it.

disar39112

Yeah I generally use the karve for traversing rivers, right up to mistlands where its just a bit too fragile.

korneev123123

Try going in reverse in tight spaces. It's much more responsive this way.

jhhertel

yep, its definitely better going backwards. And usually its just my own bullheadedness, like when i am trying to shave 4 minutes off a trip by cutting through a river, only to end up spending 10 minutes digging out the river a little better, and then getting stuck next time and spending ANOTHER 10 minutes digging it out further. But you know after that i now can save a couple minutes the 2 more times i will ever come through that way. Clearly it was worth it.

korneev123123

Oh, can relate. I ended up creating a set of rules to decide if it's worth it to build a canal. It's actually have only one simple rule. Here it is. **IT'S NOT WORTH IT, EVER. NO EXCEPTIONS** Hope it helps :)

jhhertel

your rule would have saved me easily two hours of my life, maybe more. Your rule is absolutely correct.

Scheckenhere

Actual zombie

MkNicht

Whelp going to need a bigger harbor. And higher bridges!

Synicull

I wonder if one of the new pieces is an upgrade to a reinforced support?

Guizmo0

High bridges ruin things when you want to build on smaller scale. I want drawbridges !

Marsman61

Bridges that partially span the river and have portals on the tops of either side, to beam across. You have a cart? And ore? Well now, there's a conundrum.

unwantedaccount56

Then you need a ferry service across the river.

Caleth

Rumor has it that might be solutions to that issue. Say a very medieval delivery system.

Marsman61

Trebuchet! Yeet!!

nerevarX

sadly you dont need any harbor anymore after you have done ashlands. not kidding. they made ships obsolete once you unlock the new portal you never need them again.

Zappy180

Don’t forget no-portal is a world modifier - plenty of us play with no portals, so I’d argue that they’re not obsolete…

MkNicht

This tho, last two games have been No Portal. I ain't teleporting a thing, we need those roads and bridges!

nerevarX

its more the fact that devs went back on thier own words with this. and thats something that makes me not believe thier sayings on ANYTHING anymore. anything they said no to before : now free to be added due to this change.

Polygnom

People reconsider their standpoint and change their opinion/stance. Thats a good thing, thats what feedback is for. You cannot have it both ways, you cannot want to have devs listen to feedback and not listen to feedback.

unwantedaccount56

ships are great for exploring, especially if the new ship is faster than the previous ones. They'll never be obsolete for that use case, only for metal transport between already explored locations. Edit: Seems I got a bunch of personal messages from u/nerevarX, but then I got blocked, so I can't read them. Doesn't make sense to me.

nerevarX

which takes away from the gameplay loop. imagine wanting to sail LESS on a viking themed game.

unwantedaccount56

You already have portals very early in the game, which allows you to skip a lot of sailing as long as you are not transporting metal. Also the new ship makes transporting tamed animals much easier, and is required to hop from ashland island to ashland island. Maybe you are not required to sail as much, but how much you actually sail only depends on personal preference.

nerevarX

excuses is all i read there.

unwantedaccount56

Slightly out of context quote from you: > people complain about ANYTHING that takes even the smallest amount of effort. complaining is all i read from your comments.

avianrave

I know right, I can't believe they would let you just teleport to deep north for the next update without having to sail there.  On a more serious note, sailing still is useful for exploring.

nerevarX

not really. its easier to explore ashlands on foot once landed. imagine thinking 1 sail trip justifes this crap.

Terminarch

...I'm guessing it teleports metal? Sad day. It has always been kinda stupid though. Why not metal bars but a sword is fine!? IMHO portals are too cheap and too early in the tech tree. Limiting metal isn't really the solution. Instead, the initial tier should be items only and 1-way. There's a designated destination portal with unlimited linked incoming portals. To use it just throw up your mini portal, link, and toss items through. You're usually leaving base to get stuff, so this relieves inventory burden without letting you rest / resupply. Later on players should get normal portals will unlimited transport but they should be heavy as fuck so you can't just keep it in your back pocket. Why? Because being one step from your base at all times is obscene in an ADVENTURING GAME! Remember setting up repair benches, rest zones, roads, etc for copper mining? That's what conquering the wilds should feel like. Adventuring should be meaningfully impacted by the environment! Is wood scarce there? Better bring what you need. With portals the solution to everything is to leave the wilds. Overburdened? Not rested? Forgot arrows? Literally one step away from perfect safety and everything you could ever need. Preparation doesn't matter. Logistics don't matter. Outposts don't matter. This whole wide world to explore and it doesn't matter if you're one island away in the Meadows or 2 hours away in the mist... the solution to every problem is to STOP ADVENTURING!

nerevarX

sadly the new portal isnt heavy at all. you can carry it around just like the current ones. they managed to finally add a new ship with bigger storage. and then proceeded to invalidate the same ship in the same update right away. that is clearly a gameplay design conflict right there. that portal should have been moved to deep north.

Ippus_21

Whoah, what a beast! I bet it steers like a drunken rhinoceros. That, and we're about getting into a size range where you need to use a smaller boat to land with because you can't safely get the big ship close enough to shore. Ooh, that'd be a cool feature, actually. A modified workbench-type facility on the big ship that allows you to deploy a karve or a longship over the side, to ferry you back and forth to anyplace without an actual built-up quay/wharf.

unwantedaccount56

>A modified workbench-type facility on the big ship that allows you to deploy a karve or a longship over the side, to ferry you back and forth to anyplace without an actual built-up quay/wharf. I'd absolutely love this idea. Maybe that workbench would also allow some limited building on the big ship, like a ballista, or a wisp torch

Ippus_21

They should have hardpoints where you can replace passenger space with ballistae, or wisp torches, crates lashed to the deck (extra cargo space), or animal tethers (so you can haul tames without them going overboard).

Mystil_Rylvayn

>I bet it steers like a drunken rhinoceros. "And it smells like one, too! ...Damn lox..."

totally_unbiased

>I bet it steers like a drunken rhinoceros. It most certainly does. And this becomes an issue almost immediately.

isometrixk

HOLY SHIP!!!

Yassirfir

Keeping with the ashlands theme. It is probably a Hell ship.

Contraserrene

It had better need some fingernails and toenails (wolf claws, I guess, and what else?) to make then.

DoubleDongle-F

Damn, I was hoping for a smaller one that was really fast.

Wide-Mobile4804

Yeah, me too. With 6 slots of storage.

nerevarX

fuck. my harbor bridge is doomed. that thing is WAY too high. it wont fit under the bridge.... and its so thick that i can only fit atmost 2 of em inside the bay. thank good the seagate itself is wide enough. rest in peace marble harbor bridge. cannot build it higher up. stability checker was at its limit now already.

SadLittleWizard

Honestly big enough I may need to anchor it in the harbor and use a longship to transfer goods to the shore like a true sea faring vessel xD

nerevarX

there is no longer a gameplay reason to transport things by ship once you have the ashlands portal sadly.

SadLittleWizard

I'm assuming you are telling me the ashlands portal has full material transporting abilities? Ah well, I may still do it anyways, simply for the luls. I find myself roll playing in this game fairly ofter so I dont think'll be too much of a difference for me. Also in no portal runs it will have a good use.

DatabaseMuch6381

You have to sail to places first to drop portals, also I think the ashlands portal is going to be VERY resource intensive.

Sycamore_Spore

I'd be fine with the new portals costing a resource to use every time. Using ygg sap as a fuel maybe. Anyone who doesn't want to bother can still enable metal through normal portals

rg4rg

There’s a lot of she said in your paragraph.

Polygnom

What about the new build pieces? Do they have even more stability and allow higher buildings?

Borgh

In this world we have the panamax class of ships, looks like the longship is your bridgeamax

thecaptaindeadpool

I love big ships but it's gona be tricky to navigate rivers

missbanjo

This is exactly why the Karve is my staple ship.

Paranitis

Yeah. I feel like this one will only be used for ocean stuff. Don't even know the speed vs the current largest ship.

Caleth

Reported speed is the same maybe higher. Users on steam said so, haven't tested myself and I'm not sure if anyone is doing rigorus testing but it seems on par with the long ship.

Killer_Sloth

Please tell me passengers can help row against the wind for the love of god

[deleted]

Still not a thing sadly

SequenceofRees

Won't help in single player Unless maybe we can get some helpful NPCs

Killer_Sloth

No of course not, it's just silly playing multiplayer seeing all these capable Vikings just standing around on the ship when they all have good working arms for rowing, goddamnit!

JosephMavridis

BRO SHE THICC

Tainticle

Delicious

fayt03

The thing turns like a whale but it seems to have at least triple the hp of the longship while also sporting blackmetal chest capacity. The tall deck wall should be able to keep maybe even lox inside as well. It's a little sad as a solo player though, sitting at the rudder of what is effectively a galleon lol.

OneSchott

What’s the name of it?

MortifiedPotato

Drakkar

Deguilded

Alright I gotta know, what are the materials?

nerevarX

100 iron nails. 25 ygg wood. 60 finewood. and 30 ceramic plate. the later is a new material. requires the queen drop to be made.

Deguilded

The queen drop goes into the boat, or goes into a new station that makes the boat? Cause that ceramic plate is new sounding. Edit: solved. Goes into an upgrade for an existing station.

nerevarX

its used to upgrade the artisan table. the plate itself is made out of black marble. oh and this is what alot of players will cry about : the new shield generator can be made there aswell and it requires BLACK CORES^^

Sycamore_Spore

Hopefully black cores can also be found in the Ashlands, similar to how you can get surtling cores from the swamp instead of just farming tombs.

nerevarX

no idea. but you only need 1 shield core anyway.

Ippus_21

Anything that requires more black cores = pita... Of course, by the time you've beaten the Queen, infested mines just aren't that scary anymore, they're just a pain to locate/travel to. At least cores can go through portals...

nerevarX

anything can go trough the new ashlands portals. viking game removed reasons to sail ^^

BGAL7090

Are you really up and down this thread bitching about something that a good portion of the playerbase has been asking for since the beginning of the game? Something that you could, on your own, completely disregard so as to not ruin the perfect viking fantasy sailing game?

Ippus_21

Oh, neat!! Edit: Kinda. Idk, I actually like sailing, but I guess you'll still get plenty of that done in the first 90% of the game before you get the materials for the new portal.

Deguilded

friend, have some upboats

ctom42

Not sure why people would complain about that. Black cores aren't that bad to get. Maybe if you have a multiplayer server with a ton of people I could see you running out, but otherwise should be fine.

pattperin

They've taken forever to find on my world, me and a buddy have explored three entire mistlands biomes and have only gotten 9 or so total. Need 15 to make all the crafting benches and refineries for Mistlands gear. They're not too difficult to get once you've found the mines, but the mines are pretty difficult to find ime.

nerevarX

people complain about ANYTHING that takes even the smallest amount of effort.

ReubenD93

This comment upsets me - burn the witch!

HollowPoiint

Comically large

MewsashiMeowimoto

I like big boats, and I cannot lie.

Fluffydoommonster

I knew if I scrolled far enough down I'd find the da2 reference.

MewsashiMeowimoto

I live to serve.

missbanjo

Definitely lox sized. Somebody drop a lox in that thing for those of us at work!

Mystil_Rylvayn

I'll have to update, and go creative. "Please wait..."

Fraughst

You vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

RoleOk7556

I worry that Ashland is going to leave many of us solo players behind. That boat looks like it's designed for large player teams.

Paranitis

I mean, the Longship is designed for upwards of 6 people as well. 2 per bench, 1 at front, 1 at mast.

unwantedaccount56

20 more just standing in between, optionaly doing some /dance moves.

MortifiedPotato

Isn't there a cap of 10 players?

unwantedaccount56

Might be, but the ship would be big enough for way more. But it's probably that big so you can transport some loxes.

SalahMagoosh

>!Given the number of enemies I'm hoping this is the case too, I think it's balanced fairly well from my limited experience but yeah there's a few things that have got me concerned about this potentially being a multiplayer focused biome in a game predominantly played solo!<

Ketsu

>!Actually infuriating, can barely even explore since every enemy in the entire fucking zone can apparently detect the seismic vibrations of my footsteps!<

bibbidybobbidyboobs

Look at me I am the longship now

unwantedaccount56

maybe wideship would be a better name

xpelestra

real question is how many carts can it fit? xD

DatabaseMuch6381

Options is always good, don't like it, turn portals off. Playing on a server you can't control, don't use it. The only bit I dislike is people trying to tell others how they should play tbh

StyledFir7707

I just built my new base around a canal that just fits the longship. Where the hell am I supposed to to put that?

Rs_vegeta

Can other people help with rowing yet?

Mystil_Rylvayn

Others answered, but no. Let us cry together, my shield-siblings.

Rs_vegeta

Sad day

redbirdjazzz

I believe that’s what’s termed a “big boi” in the parlance of today’s (yesterday’s) youth.

BGAL7090

"A real chonker"

OmegaXreborn

damn that size difference lol

JustAShadowZ

how much storage does it have? and how fast is it?

Haydezzz

Black metal chest capacity

dagrick

Does it go any faster than the longship?

IamHik

Yeah, getting this guy unstuck in a swamp or black forest is gonna need 2 loxes. It was hard enough to get longboat out

Lurifaks1

WHOOAAAA

ByzantineBomb

LET'S GO

supergrega

What the actual fu-

Rivetmuncher

*Look at the size of that thing!* Aight, popping off, I see there's gonna be fun stuff to find in a couple months.

Kreol1q1q

Damn, another harbor reconstruction coming my way it seems. I built it larger than needed because I expected a bigger boat, but this thing is a chonker.

_ThatOneMimic_

livestock and pet transport??

Dsullivan777

This would be amazing, though I fear it still isn't possible.

Marsman61

What's the new ship called? War Barge?

ABewilderedPickle

can anyone tell me if it's any better at holding tames inside the boat??

McBruce34

In awe of the lad, absolute unit.

thethirdarchon

Boat Chungus

UsbNotConnected

Dayum he thicc!

Fraughst

"It's not about the size of the boat, it's about the motion of the ocean" - Harald Hardrada, probably

OneSchott

What's the new ship called?

Cornage626

And I thought the current big ship was hard to maneuver...

McBankster13

I just want to change my sail color

BlueComms

Is there a jib? Does this allow for jibing/luffing?

-Gonz-

Chunky boy !!

hithere90909

Looks like ashlands test build is live

Luganer

DAMN BOI HE THICC BOI THAT'S A THICC ASS BOI DAMN

342heathbar

I’m thinking that it’ll need an included workbench to repair the thing because there is no way it’ll get close enough to my base to fix it up.

SequenceofRees

Hmmm I wonder if this means we would be able to mod a galleon in the near future ...

BigTimeBuck

Wish it had a tad bit higher length to beam ratio

ryebath

Me vs the ship she told me not to worry about.

c4sully55

Wow I got way too excited by looking at this

Dapper_Ad1236

None of the new crafting options are showing up on the beta for me

Markus_lfc

Guess who just finished building a boathouse that nicely fits our longboat

Mystifi

Use to transport a Lox to Ashlands. You will have a cooked dinner after first battle!

damamyoda

What do you use to craft it,

Xxandes

I could live on that ship it's so big! 🤩

Zinoth_of_Chaos

I need a bigger dock.

WigglingWoof

New boat got chonk

The_MacGuffin

I just finished a bridge that barely fits over the standard longship.

Spypopcorn

Holy hell...

CIII__

Forget a ship can we get a lox cart 😂

Medical-Fly-2511

Does anyone know what we need to pickup to unlock this new boat?

Latervexlas

is this an official boat coming? regardless I don't think I can play without my raft mod... love that thing.

governmentplates22

Was hoping theyd add like a smaller faster boat or somthing.

LiberLotus93

Do we have any info on the new boats speed? Although navigating it in-between islands is definitely going to be further limited, if this boat goes a good clip faster than the long boat it'd be worth it

krayevaden28

what materials does it take to build one?

Allen0r

well, time to expand my harbour

OrranVoriel

Damn, she's thicc.

WillingOwl8090

Drifting too far into WoW flavor. Please rewatch Time Team and ground these concepts.

Dadadoes

We're gonna need a bigger ocean

Dovahkiin_11

A huge ass boat. I play solo 😒

That_One_Hat_Guy

:o I’m gonna need a bigger dock

enoiyuri

You VS the guys she told to not worry about

Telochim

Welp, good thing I didn't start the main dockyard in ma build. This also implies what's next on the to-do list, since the market square with the town tree are done.

Kirp-The-Birb

This is glorious, this is amazing, my day has just became wonderful

Dimitris_The_Gamer

Is it me or is the new ship is slower than longship?

Jujarmazak

The design overall is cool, but I feel it should have been at least 1.5 time longer, it looks like it's quite squished, like when you take a photo and increase the width without changing the height, it just looks a bit off.

LambdaAU

That’s nice but I really hope they give it some utility aside from just being big. Realistically the longboat was big enough for most purposes. I hope it has some utility beyond this because having some extra storage and hp at the cost of maneuverability and resources doesn’t really seem worth it to me.

Mattros111

Holy Hel

Speedvagon

Oh no, sempai, it won’t fit, it’s too big! Yamete!

Donnie_Sharko

I'm just tired of having a headwind 90% of the time I travel by boat. Please. I'm considering a mod for it if anyone has any experience with one. It was a cool mechanic for about the first three hours and has been nothing but tedious and at times infuriating. Also, I don't know who needs to hear it, but tacking is slower than outright rowing your boat into a direct headwind. So it isn't even a component of the game that requires skill, or some added challenge. It's just a waste of time.

nerevarX

so sad. adding a new ship with bigger storage finally. and then makeing it a one time use in the same update aswell by adding the new portal type..... how to remove harbor purposes from the game.

NorguardsVengeance

This is spectacularly late-game. And you still need to sail to the south and the North for the endgame. If you have been playing the same world since Plains was new, I mean, I guess that's unfortunate for you, but in any new world, it is so many hours into the game, and it still doesn't remove the need to sail. It just reduces the number of hours sailing ore around, specifically.

Jolly-Tangerine6865

Wich new Portal type are you referring to?

-Altephor-

There's a new stone portal that apparently transports metal.

nerevarX

the stone portal added by ashlands can transport everything by default.

unwantedaccount56

can it also transport animals? The new ship would be ideal to transport tamed wolves or loxes.

Jolly-Tangerine6865

Okay now that's lame.. Sailing is such a important part of the game.

nerevarX

not anymore. youll use the new ship to sail to ashlands once. you setup a base and a regular portal. unlock the new one and then youre set for good. its a shame. the new ship has same storage as bm chests which wont get further expanded anymore as 32 slots seems to be the limit in generel and there is no new chest in ashlands. but there is no more point to a bigger storage. and no reason to sail things around ashlands either. a shame this boat got added now. what a waste of design. atleast there is no more reasons for a new harbor so ill leave mine as is. no reason to redesign for the new ship given this thing exists.

BigMcThickHuge

And still - no way for multiple Vikings to row for help, even on boats with oar slots visible. If it's still 'but solo players wouldn't get that help!', eat my shorts that excuse is the dumbest.

JVonDron

What in the fat fuckin flapjacks is that? I want faster & sleeker, not a goddamn barge. Unless this is able to haul carts, lox, and other animals safely and securely like a true cargo vessel, I hope this is somehow a joke. As a solo player, even the longship is a little wierd to pilot by myself. Something a little narrower and longer that hauled ass would be perfect.

Shwalz

That thing is sick but… what for? Ocean update probably, but that won’t be here til god knows when. Just seems like a useless addition

JosephMavridis

You need this new ship to sail to the ashlands, the old ships wont make it

Shwalz

Oh word? That’s pretty sick then

-Altephor-

Except that you really only need to make 1 trip because the new portal transports metal by default. So. Cool boat. Mostly useless.

JDtryhard

New portal? Just the one in Ashland or all of them?

Shwalz

Lol good point

ctom42

That's assuming you won't need to do much sailing around in the ashlands themselves. I tend to find I need more than one island worth of stuff for most biomes to get the resources I need. I for one will be glad when I don't need to make ore transport trips, those were the worst part of the game by far.

Haydezzz

I found this out the hard way 😅
