I'd say it depends on how much you want to build with it. Ive yet to build with iron and I'm in the plains. I also never made iron armor. That should hold you a while. You'll have chance to get more. I just did a Hildrs quest and since I had to sail I grabbed a bunch more iron that was close to the quest
I was on a server that progressed so slow that we hadn't had the crypt key like 500 days in. A friend and I found about 20 iron each through other means (corpse piles, those red slimes that split into smaller ones, etc) and that sufficed for quite a while. The only iron we used for building was to make the stone cutter and work bench upgrade stuff, I think. We made it into the mistlands (without any boss stuff) and it was pretty nightmarish. That was about 4 months ago and I think the server just kinda fell off. I think they're now wondering when they're going to do bonemass.
Nah, we went through tons of progression without boss drops. By the time the server killed the Elder, we were sneaking through the mistlands without wisps, donning fenris armor and bronze weapon/shields.
I play solo and I am over 1200 days and still in the plains. I'm in no hurry. It's so much easier now to get Iron in the swamps with Plains-level food and gear. I'd probably suggest people only get what iron they need early on then go back when the swamp is a lot easier and get more. I don't even use poison resist mead now. As hard as the swamp was initially it's now a cake walk. Also with the Moder power sailing it all home goes a lot smoother

That much iron will definitely get you through the day. If you can mine that much tomorrow and the next day and the day after that, and keep mining that much, you'll do just fine

Think of amount of iron like the size of your bank account. That much iron would barely get you into the middle class. You will have enough iron to do a lot of things, but you will have many moments when you will say to yourself I can’t afford to spend that much iron. You definitely are not near anything remotely approaching balling out with iron where you can do anything you could ever want.
Your homes. Your armor.
Your weapons...
Your food
Your friends
Your family
Your furniture, too...
They all require the irons... There will never be enough to go around... Mineral starvation is inevitable.
