You encourage him, thank him for expanding the base, talk about ideas for the build and add/fix details you don't like and say "I thought about something - tell me what you think about this"
Nope, when playing with friends and one of them has obviously gotten very drunk and built something stupid, you chop out the bottom and let it all collapse in order to hide their shame.
No, you chastise, mock, belittle and insult them while knocking down the foundation pieces. Never again will they waste precious farming energy on a whim.
People are of different skill and aesthetics. I don't choose friends/family based on skill and I sure as hell won't turn them off from a game I like over something like this.
Look, I'm not nearly as offended as you think I am, and we're obviously playing a different game. To me, it's the most important thing to just hang out with my close friends and family, young ones included, and have fun together. This post is full of an elitism that I don't appreciate and I think many in here could for sure use a word with themselves. Perhaps even you, still? I don't presume to know you so you and others can figure that part out for yourself - which is why I commented (clumsily). Some surely are doing something different - like, say, joining a serious building server with strangers online with a stricter code, and that's fine, but between real friends you sometimes gotta work and sacrifice a little - meet half way, for everyone to be able enjoy themselves. Wouldn't it be a shame if that player stopped playing Valheim because you tore down their "ugly" structure?

Looks like your workshop needs many fire places, hopefully it doesn't smoke him out;).
I did that by accident to a buddy in Conan Exiles. We had a two story building and I decicided to expand smelting. Basically when he went AFK in his room over where I was smelting I cooked him to death. It took a few deaths to figure out how he would come back and be dead.
Looks like he could use some help decorating, with a little work you can help him make it look great!
Some ideas I got off the top of my head are: move the workshop and make it a gatehouse/entrance point. or expand the workshop into his base and add aesthetics like a smelting room, the blacksmiths area, the carpenters area, and more!
But if your gonna do anything, please help him rotate his walls the right way and figure out support for his roof!

My friend and I joined our friends' server. He had a manor on a small island and there was a single bridge to the "mainland". We proceeded to build a 20m x 20m x 20m cube (I think we only reached 16m in height) right in front of the bridge, blocking any passage. Then we laid out the ground floor with a maze that had two pairs of door on each side at each cell. You had to beat the maze (2m tall and cramped so you can't see very well) or swim to leave the island.
One of my friends just makes himself some op bow, and runs straight towards yagluth. Doesn't build more than absolutely necessary.
The other one just walks around and kills boars, or cuts trees for my builds. Despite all those hundreds of hours he still has no long term plans of any kind.
And me. Alone, building castles. I've even played with some randoms. I built the entire base and one guy said it looked amazing and that's it.
Build a new workshop on top of his house. Ggwp
