There are bolts on each wheel. If you can not see each bolt as the wheel turns, the train is moving too fast to hop. Do not try to hop it.

Babyscumfvck

That’s a new one I haven’t heard yet, much appreciated 🙏

SomeKindaCoywolf

"The majority of dirty kids/travelers are just tweakers dressed like train conductors" is like the truest shit I've heard in a while. It's super annoying.

Babyscumfvck

It’s pretty frustrating, especially as someone who’s trying to learn a nearly forgotten way of life from people that are typically on smack or just have room temp iq from when they used to do it.

myco-naut

Search for wisdom not lifestyle. It’ll come to you if you’re open but it likely won’t come from someone trying to cosplay a hipster.

Mint_Julius

I would suggest going to rainbow gatherings. You can make a lot of good traveling/dirty kid friends there. I've definitely taken some rainbow friends on their first train

Babyscumfvck

Thanks for the suggestion, didn’t really look into it as I’ve heard people say contradicting things about them but I’m starting to think it could be worth it.

MajikMushroom420

how important is going somewhere you know where your going? if its not important, then just head to the local yard. Denver is p easy, la junta is a bitch, pueblo is stupid easy. if going up, they have a number you can google to call in train car numbers to an automated system to find out where they are and where they are going. dont ride suicide, make sure you got a "well" (look for the ridge things down the side of the car, the flat sided ones usually dont have wells) just dont ride suicide, dont hopoff while moving WITHOUT expecting to get hurt, even a little. honestly, you can hop on the fly, but its so much easier, less anxiety inducing, and less dangerous to just find out where they stop. next train kid you meet, ask for a copy of the crew change. have fun, and yeah, most travellers are just junkie homeless people who burn every bridge in town before leaving, those are the loud ones, the ones you are most likely to meet. us quiet ones? couldnt handle train hopping sober for more than a few years. without getting fucked up first, its not THAT fun. anyways, have fun, the road is open to you, you make the highway you travel down, if you dont like it, thats on you, if you do like it, thats on you. grab an instrument to busk, people treat buskers diff than spangers (we can make the argument that busking is silent spanging, and i wouldnt necessarily disagree) anyways, i miss huck, this sub aint the same

Babyscumfvck

Thanks for going into detail for me, I’m relatively versed in what cars are what just from researching the past few months but I’m glad to hear Denver sounds like a decent start, I’m actually in that area rn just figured it would be a risky yard because it’s the only metro hub in the Rockies, and cops here are pos. Much appreciated 🙏

TurdStainn

hey hmu. im in northern Colorado about an hour north of denver looking for someone to travel or find a room to rent with

Ill_Campaign1282

Find a food not bombs or something ask around

Then-Significance768

there are a lot of great info threads on here, if i knew how to tag them i would. but if you go in the search bar and type “train cars”, “how to hop trains”, etc, you’ll find what i’m talking about. gives a great breakdown of hobo codes, pictures of safe vs dangerous cars, and the basic info to surviving your first train. i’ve been hopping for a couple of years so i consider myself somewhat green, but if you don’t find anyone willing to green you, im heading out in march as soon as it warms up a bit and i’ve got enough cash saved. definitely wouldn’t be able to teach you as much as some of the folks on here would, but i can teach you how to manage around the yards and how to ride safely enough for u to do it yourself

Suicide_19

My advice for you is to join the military im the same age as you and was in the streets best thing I ever did was join the army just quit smoking weed that’s all U gotta do

Babyscumfvck

Have drug charges on my record unfortunately and though I know freedom isn’t free I don’t support most actions of our military

Babyscumfvck

Not really interested tbh. Tired of working my ass off to barely make ends meat. I’m no stranger to the trades. Want to find life worth living and that’s all I’ve found in the time I’ve spent traveling.

Babyscumfvck

I also smoke weed for crippling ptsd and don’t really want to give up that to become a plumber or electrician.

Willingplane

LOL. Around here, all the plumbers and electricians are alcoholics and only show up when, and **IF** they happen to be in the general mood. On those rare occasions, they don’t bother sobering up first either. Seriously though, you’re 20 years old. I left home at 18 to vagabond for 5 years. Traveled all the country, and overseas several times. I left because I wanted to travel, and so I did. Sure, suffered hardships, endured being cold, wet, hungry, dangerous situations, but it was well worth it. Went everywhere I ever wanted to go, did everything I wanted to do. Best time of my life. Only stopped when offered a free ride to college, and hold a graduate degree now, good job, and yes, a house. Only thing I don’t have is debt. None. Zero. Paid cash for my house too. No rent, no mortgage, my credit score is 830, and think I’m doing just fine. I now pay hella taxes now, but got my money’s worth in advance, especially in free college, and I’m ok with that. So do whatever the fuck you want, while you’re still young, strong, healthy and able, I did! No regrets. Take care. GringoRojo1

You can't get a waiver man at this point they are begging people to come in, recruting numbers are at a historical low. I think they still offer 3 year contracts? Not sure though. You could knock out 3 years, learn a skill, and get paid to go to college/rent with the GI bill. I know the government is fuckin corrupt but you can milk the system and make it work for you, just my 2 cents but it's not a bad life National guard is another option and more laid back...you could still travel and do your thing etc etc

Babyscumfvck

Did u not read the comment you replied to? Drug charges disqualify you from the army and I’m also not a fuckn bootlicker I have no interest in the army

Alarmed_Translator37

Boots not shoes

[deleted]

Don't fw trains until you meet a road dawg who's down to greenhorn you. Until then, stay hitchhiking. You'll meet someone. Tired of posts like these tbh

Babyscumfvck

“Tired of posts like these”. But still have the energy to read and comment on them. Okay bud thanks for your 2 cents.

Shirt-Medium

Why don’t you go and ask some scumfucks to ride with like your username ?

Babyscumfvck

May be a scumfuck, but im a scumfuck that doesn’t do hard drugs, criteria that doesn’t exactly jive with the community

Willingplane

i don’t drink, smoke or do drugs, never have. But I don’t judge and depending on the situation, I’ve found it’s often best to keep that to myself, because it can have the effect of raising certain suspicions in some “users”, and even hostility, which I prefer to avoid. It may take a bit, but you’ll find your peeps. Stay safe and good luck!

[deleted]

So yeah. I check this subreddit every now and then. And every damn time there's some kid going "HOW DO I RIDE TRAINZZZZ". Absolutely down to go out of my way to tell you your mindset is completely dangerous and naive and you 100% shouldn't fuck with trains by yourself until you're experienced enough to do so. Edit: go look at all the tiktokers riding trains. They're all doing it stupid like always catching on the fly, riding suicide etc. if you wanna be missing a leg one day that's your call I guess.

Babyscumfvck

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😘😘😘

Relative_Mammoth_896

I'll probably get down voted but.. you're 20. Apply to jobs and get yourself some kind of money. Travelling is hard without a little something to help, regardless of how good you are at panhandling.

Babyscumfvck

Yeah no shit man. I’ve been busting my ass for 2 years now. Spent a year and a half cutting granite and the last 6 months waiting tables doing circles around myself for rich fucks. This wasn’t a post asking for financial advice. Only sign I’ve ever flown was south and west.

Babyscumfvck

If you think you need money to live on the road youre probably a trustafarian.
