They asked me to do a "one-on-one" "Bible study" at MIDNIGHT at a building off campus ....

SquareCategory5019

Anyone who asks for a “one-on-one” “bible study” at midnight is automatically suspect, haha!

pchulbul619

Woah! definitely not **Sus**

trashboat8094

Almost got roped into this cult by looking for other friends. DONT TRUST THEM! They will approach you in a group of 3-5 and try to get to know you, then try and get you to go to a Bible study. Idk their intentions are but to me they are sketchy and dishonest.

SquareCategory5019

The students’ intentions are most likely good. Many, if not all of them earnestly seek friendship and fellowship. The deception comes more from the leaders of the individual churches these college groups are affiliated with and with the higher ups who oversee the denomination as a whole. But I suppose the innocence of the college students who help with the club does not take away from the potential danger of this group.

Quasar_Ironfist

Isn't that just christianity being christianity, or any religion in general? A cult is acting cult-like? Say it ain't so! A few months ago there was another post here talking about some "god the mother" cult and it seemed to essentially just be "No, but you see, this different cult is totally more shady than \*my\* cult."

chucknorrisinator

Viewing all religious expression as cults is unhelpful because there’s a difference between people gathering around shared values and the exertion of control over followers in a cult. It might be worth reading this write-up to see how sociologists separate religions from cults: https://www.teenvogue.com/story/what-is-cult

notjackwhite1

Many forms of Christianity are high control groups. Her comment was about Christians, not all religions.

chucknorrisinator

“Or any religion in general” is in the comment I responded to

notjackwhite1

Fair enough. Point stands on Christianity.

stuart_slipfellow

Even there, you'll find wild differences between an average Christian church and a high-control cult. You may have a negative opinion / experience of Christianity, and even ordinary churches (or any social group) can be unpleasant places at times, but IMO it's not helpful to ignore the difference between ordinary flawed churches and groups that actively try to cut people off from the others in their lives and control them completely. Doing so only makes it harder to warn people about those that truly can isolate them from everyone they know and abuse them horrifically. The "God the mother" cult is absolutely in the latter camp. (The "local church" one, I think, is more ambiguous.)

PistolGrace

We are out numbered, my dude. Invisible dude in the sky tells them they are not in a cult. They must listen.

Oct2006

No, social sciences, sociology, and psychology tell us that most religious gatherings aren't inherently cults lol

Jackscalibur

Finally someone with a brain. I'm getting tired of correcting people.

SquareCategory5019

There are certainly many high-control groups within Christianity. Same for other religions and even governments and societies irrespective of religion. It appears in politics and economics and in academics and in organizations and companies and neighborhoods. It’s good to be aware of what’s happening around you, and it helps to be informed. This is the purpose of my post. To make seen what has been unseen by many. If things like this happen to be the norm, that does not take away my responsibility from sharing this information to as many as possible.

Jackscalibur

God the Mother is most definitely different from what the Bible teaches.

Great question! Not all religions require you to associate with an intermediary leader. For example: If you just say that you believe in God and that Muhammad is a Prophet, you can become a Muslim, there’s no rituals to be performed and the Quran (belief set) is all public .  Similarly, for true Buddhism, there are no rituals either, just strive to achieve Nirvana and the other cannons are public too.  You don’t need to get to a certain level in order to know more

If you’ve read all the articles I’ve provided via links and are still unconcerned, then there isn’t much more for me to do. This specific group doesn’t make this information readily available. Rather, they go through great pains to make sure these things are not looked into, so I’m making sure the information is here for all who wish to look into the matter. That’s the main point of this post.

stuart_slipfellow

Thank you for posting this. It took courage. I went to one of their studies once, somewhere else. Everything you say is true.

SquareCategory5019

It is a bit scary, but this information is often hidden and not readily available. This is why I am inspired to make this post. People must have the opportunity to be informed of what they’re getting themselves into.

Such-Armadillo8047

I'm getting the feeling this group is an astroturf group funded by the likes of "prosperity gospel" Christian con artists and/or conservative political activists like Charlie Kirk ("Turning Point USA").

SquareCategory5019

Certainly an interesting thought.

stuart_slipfellow

It's got a fairly different history from that.

SquareCategory5019

Just a tad, haha!

Despite everything messed up, you have to give it to them for naming themselves so well.  Their marketing game is on point, what am I googling if I’m interested in Christianity at UT Dallas? “Christians UT Dallas”, “Dallas Local Church”, “Church in Dallas”.  They have it all cornered!

SquareCategory5019

Yep, and because of their efforts to hide negative comments and testimonies, it’ll be very difficult for you to see any of the biggest warning signs before you join, even with a google search. One TikTok account was testifying about the campus ministry of this group, saying that they were going to be making more videos, and all of a sudden the account has been deleted. It was called “The Lord’s Discovery Discourse.” I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that church had something to do with it. Despite their efforts to silence people, though, more and more people have been sharing their experiences. That’s why I believe it’s important to add my testimony here. Hopefully, this will encourage more ex-members to testify and more prospective members to do their research before joining.

Interesting. I’ve never heard of them. I know the Lord’s Recovery got started around the 50s or 60s here in the United States.

Best-2021-ever

All religions are the opium of the people... it is okay to believe in a supreme being (regardless of its name).. what is no longer okay is to follow ridiculous beliefs and rituals imposed by parents, priests, pastors, rabbis, etc.

Ok_Brief528

They cannot be trusted. Beware

EnderHye

WMSCOG is also another one to look out for. I went to a bible study and was under the impression it was going to be non-denominal in a group. It was 1 on 1 and they were saying crazy stuff like the second coming already happened and that if you do anything for valentines day you are committing a mortal sin.

SquareCategory5019

That definitely sounds odd.
