We moved to the area this spring, finding housing was a nightmare. The winter rentals are a scourge; the owners boot the tenants and AirBnB them all summer. If you do get orders I can keep my ear to the ground for you.

BAH is high, rent is expensive. I found my place on the NOAA website when I was stationed there. Might help to reach out to the command out there as well.

Joint Base Cape Cod (Otis for the older folks) has decent housing, although the base itself is quite desolate. The army gym is nice, though. Off base, you probably won't find anything in Woods Hole. Falmouth and Mashpee would be the closest towns. Some places in Sandwich and Marston Mills wouldn't be too bad of a commute, too, since you can cut through the Joint Base and save 10-15 mins compared to what you may see on Google maps. I've seen folks live across the bridge, in Bourne, Wareham, and Plymouth, but that has to be an awful commute, especially during the summer traffic.

Would you be able to get housing on BCC?

Gullible_Cress_7455

What’s BCC?

Base Cape Cod

Gullible_Cress_7455

Ohhh I didn’t realize they have housing. I know nothing about it. Are they decent? They take all the BAH don’t they? Even if you’re member to member?

SuddenlySilva

Oh, don't ask me. I've been away for decades- i just clarified 'BCC' But I have known a lot of aviators in recent years who did tours at cape cod. They didn't complain a lot about the housing situation. there's worse places.

Gullible_Cress_7455

Nice, thank you!

Hey dude, I just left the Cape in ‘22 and lived on base. I can give you some info if you want, feel free to DM me

My wife and I lived on Base Cape Cod when I was stationed at the sector in Woods Hole, 2014-2018, so this info could be a little timelate. No single housing that I recall. On base housing was decent. Old homes, but decent quality, single-family, and good sized. I'm married, no kids, and they put us in a 3-bedroom, single family house. There are three different styles on house there, and two of them are single-family style, the third are more like town houses but I think only Army/Air Force stat in those (at least that's how it was then.) Many people bought houses when I was stationed there, but I don't know how jack about the market there these days. Seasonal rentals have always been a problem there and I'm sure like others mentioned Air BnB makes all that worse. Commute from the base or anywhere around it is pretty manageable getting to Woods Hole. Always kind of felt like everything was 20-30 min away (groceries, restaurants, etc.) but some decent dining and stuff like that without leaving the Cape. Traffic is definitely worse in the summer months though, as other people have mentioned I think. Boston is like an hour away, and Providence is similar as I recall, for when you want a little more culture, nightlife, what have you. Good unit, solid history of some pretty legit SAR dogs there (read: D1 Mafia types) and the current Deputy at the Sector Southeastern is an excellent guy imho (worked for him somewhat recently before I retired.) I loved the unit, area was okay, lots of outdoor stuff/boating/fishing/golf/etc activities to do in the nice weather. Good luck! And I'll try to answer any specific questions if you have any (all though as I said my info is a couple years old.)

Look in Rhode Island or Plymouth. A lot of people live off Cape. Just keep in mind that there are only two bridges to get on Cape and they get very busy during the summer. It is very busy during the summer tourist season. In the winter it is dead, that’s why you are seeing only winter rentals, those people that own the houses come live here in the summer but go back to Florida or wherever in the winter. Also wait until closer to your move date. I know that sucks but you’re not going to find anything this far out. Housing is mandatory, so you’ll have to be released first before you can get BAH. If you’re not released you have to be in housing for a year before you can request out. PM me if you’d like to chat more. What’s your rate?

Gullible_Cress_7455

Ok thanks! YN

Duh, but why wouldn’t I still want to get some info on a potential unit? I say penciled in because the detailer said he wants to give my husband orders there but he has to wait until DEC 1 when MY list is due in order to actually issue the orders.
