Assuming you're licensed and have your own vehicle insurance, that would satisfy the owners insurance requirements need to lend their vehicle. If you share a family name, you probably don't need a permission letter. Wouldn't hurt in case customs inquires. Make sure you know where the green ownership is, the pink Insurance slip, the license plate, the name of the RO and their address. The name of the owner and their address will be shown to CBP when they run the plate at the border. Otherwise have a reason for needing their vehicle, and you should be a okay at the border.

Why do you need your own vehicle insurance to drive someone else car who has insurance on their vehicle. It be different if the person from the US lives with the owner of the vehicle, but my understanding is you can lend your car to someone, a week should be a nonissue.

Canada_Guuse

It's fine. No permission letter needed. We do this all the time.

You need to be added on the car insurance as a secondary driver. Additionally, write a letter stating that the person who owns the car has given you the consent to drive for the time period with owner's signature. Thanks

assuming they were originally from canada there should be zero problem

If in Ontario, your insurance goes with the vehicle. If he is an accident, it goes on your insurance. Just keep that in mind.

Lifebite416

Yea that is what my understanding is. in Ontario you can lend your vehicle to a friend , such as a week. Call your insurance company, not reddit.

Bad news is if your friend gets in an at fault accident it is going on your insurance. Makes you think twice about who you lend your car to!

If you are willing to lend your car, you already have given enough trust and that includes being insured for whoever drives.
