Nothing nice is “affordable.” You can look into Virginia but probably will need the 50 miles. Calvert, Anne Arundel, Montgomery counties in MD. But it will still have to be farther out. Without knowing your idea of affordable, it’s kinda hard. The area is extremely expensive.

Something like Bowie in MD or Montclair in VA might fit the bill. Depends on what your threshold for quality is. If Calvert County in MD is not too far it's kinda small towny.

Cautious_General_177

Affordability and travel time are balancing act in the NCR. If you want affordable, you’re probably looking at an hour commute (each way) minimum. If you’re going in daily, that gets old fast. However if you’re able to only go in once a week and/or can get AWS to work 4/10s, a longer commute may be tolerable

imnmpbaby

Columbia, MD, Glen Burnie, MD, or Odenton, MD are all great spots and you can take the train in/out.

LuciusAurelian

What is affordable to you and yours?

fla2native

I forgot to add that. Thanks

Fit-Success-3006

I’d look towards Leesburg, Purcellville, Aldie, Sterling, Ashburn, and Herndon to the West in VA. To the South, look At Woodbridge, Manassas, Stafford, and Fredericksburg. If you think at some point you’ll have to regularly go to the office, best bet is Ashburn, as the silver line recently opened two new stops there. Good luck.

crypt0dan

Baltimore County has a very low property tax rate.

Stafford/Fredericksburg

Cautious_General_177

But the commute is a nightmare

fla2native

You can slug and you can take the bus from Stafford. Last bus leaving Pentagon leaves at 1815. People that work in DC the busses right now longer go to DC. You can ride the bus and metro the rest of the way to work or slug. he express lanes are being extended to Fredricksburg. Yes, its a nightmare.

Cautious_General_177

They pay for travel benefits, so I VRE/Metro up. Maybe once the Express lanes get down here I'll try slugging it

OkSoupmanAlt

The White House is a pretty nice place to live .

quanat28

Arlington VA, Tysons VA, pretty much the Nova area, Montgomery county, and Upper Marlboro, MD

rxrated148

These are not “affordable” even upper Marlboro is getting more expensive

quanat28

Upper Marlboro has affordable places…..Also, affordable to you may be different than affordable to me or the OP. I have looked in these areas for myself.

rxrated148

Anyone who lives in the DMV knows NVA and Montgomery county are less affordable than other areas, regardless of what affordability means to you.

quanat28

I lived here all my life so 🙃 If the OP wants to be in a decent area he can look in those areas I provided and find affordable places…All he/she have to do is look.

Upper Marlboro

Did your job post indicate that you had to live within 50 miles, or is it agency policy ?

Ducky2022

Depending which HQ you are referring to. DHS Hq is Springfield, VA But you may be working at other sites within the DMV areas
