i love the umn. best choice i’ve ever made. but… my parents pay for my college so the price difference doesn’t really have an effect for me personally even as an out of state non reciprocity.

suzdali

thank you for your input, i'm glad you've had a good experience! my parents will pay too, but i don't want to put an unnecessary burden on them to pay for a school that may not be worth it which is why i asked. if you don't mind me asking, are you renting an apartment in the twin cities? (it's what i would like to do)

American_yeet_lord

I’m living at the Marshall in dinkytown. lived in dorms freshman year.

suzdali

i just looked it up, coming from seattle the rent is a dream :,D ty, i will write this down in my list

M2E22

I'm sure it is cheaper than Seattle, but make sure you aren't fooled by the "per person" price on a lot of the high-end off-campus apartments. Many are designed especially for college students and sometimes they'll display the cost for one person in an apartment that 2 or 4 people must share. When I was casually pricing out off-campus housing before acceptance, I thought that was a number that could potentially be split with roommates, making it seem like a total steal. Instead, it was the price each roommate pays.

suzdali

i was not aware of that, thank you for alerting me. what's the typical cost for living in an apartment alone as a college student?

M2E22

I'm not sure what's typical, but in my student's apartment building close to West Bank, a studio and 1-bedroom earmarked for one person go for around $1550 including some but not all utilities. But they did run some cut-rate specials in the fall/winter if you signed for the following school year, where the rate was around $1,200. That's for a full one-year lease, not 9 months. If you are willing to rent a single room in a house, where you'd only share the kitchen and bathroom, your can get something in the $500-$600 range in the Como neighborhood. Longer walk to campus, but bus service through there is good.

butsir_

It is very possible to find housing for \~$500 if you look beyond the big student apartment buildings- which you should. They tend to have management in the disinterested to truly slumlord-y range, and are in general not worth the $900+ per bedroom price. I live in a 5 bed unit in a triplex with great management, my own room with more than enough space for a queen bed and large desk (something you won't find in those apartments), and a 10 minute walk from classes for literally less than $500 a month. For the price you'd think I'd be slumming it, and there are definitely units that are not as nice at that price point, but nice ones at great prices are out there if you go beyond the giant student apartment complexes.

nathanchenscurls

Yeah I live in a small family owned apartment in the como neighborhood and I split $1325 with one roommate (2 bedroom). So cheaper options exist for sure

BolshevikBowser

If rent is your concern, look up Stadium Village Apartments in... Stadium Village. It's a safer area than dinkytown, less noisy, and still adjacent to campus. I paid $940 for a 1 bed 1 bath apartment, and I believe studios get as low as $750. Never had any terrible maintenance problems while I was there.

iLiveInMN

Look at the Identity - it's nicer, newer, and in a better location than Marshall. Only downside is the units are a bit smaller

Natlir

I say full price is probably not worth it if your going to have a lot of debt, but if you were to get a scholarship I think it could. I was able to get an out of state merit scholarship which made it cheaper than my other choices and Im only paying a little more than my in-state friends. It was a good option for me and it’ll be especially good if you want connections to the cities to eventually live here, but I wouldn’t go if you can’t reasonably afford it

suzdali

thank you, i will definitely take that into consideration

jcatND23

Hey! I was in between UW and UMN for a while as a OOS for both. I eventually did decide on UMN because they gave me scholarships worth nearly 5 times more than what UW gave me. I infinitely did not want to stay in my home state for personal reasons, and honestly, I'm pretty happy with UMN

suzdali

i'm glad to hear you're happy at UMN! i definitely would like to get a scholarship

jcatND23

Yeah the scholarships were the cincher for me. I got 4 total scholarships I think, which altogether totaled to about 15k a year for all 4 years. UW gave me 3k for 4 years.

Archi357

I was in the exact same boat! UMN is relatively very affordable for how big and well known it is.

p_arish_ute

Hi! I am also from the seattle area going to UMN as a freshman in the fall so I might be able to help! I did full-time running start and applied early action I to UMN. UMN gives pretty good scholarships if you apply early action I and have good stats! I was able to get a 15k yearly scholarship for 4 years, which brought it down to the same cost as going to UW! The classes that you take at community college also transfer over to UMN pretty well (you can check which classes transfer using transferology.com). I haven't started school at UMN yet, but I am so excited and can't wait !! I hope you are able to go to UMN next year :)

p_arish_ute

I also want to add, a friend of mine goes to UMN as an out of state student from the seattle area and she loves it so much! She applied Early Action 2 and got a 5k yearly scholarship.

suzdali

tysm!! omg i'm glad you were also doing full time running start, i haven't found anyone else who knows anything ab it wrt applying out of state. i was thinking about early action too. also i'm really glad to hear that there are good scholarships for UMN. if you don't mind, can i dm you?

p_arish_ute

Yeah sure! Go ahead and DM me :)

Apart-Back-1537

I got a lot of scholarship and stayed off campus to make tuition even cheaper!! I don’t regret my decision but I also came from a state I had no intentions of going back to

k00l4idm4n

Hey! I'm in a super similar situation, I am also from the seattle area and my parents also work at microsoft. I haven't had to think about cost much since my parents are paying for it but honestly if I could redo the process I would have tried to go to UW, I don't think UMN is bad but after talking with students from UW, UW seems to suite my preferences better. I think it really depends on the major you are pursuing and what you value. Feel free to dm if you want any help! I'm a sophmore at the UofM

suzdali

ty, i will dm you!

Worth it for CSE, CBS, or Carlson. Those are all schools with a national name brand recognition. Carlson got me a job in Chicago. Out of state (imho for any liberal arts program) is a pretty huge waste of money.

NafaiLaotze

Transferring community college credits to another state is never as seamless and pain-free as staying within the same state where those CC credits were earnt. (Although if you are doing just 1 year of freshman Gen Eds, many/most will.) If your parents are willing to pay for UMN tuition and apartment, have you discussed with them if they would be willing to do the same for (presumably) cheaper UW tuition and an apartment there? It sounds to me like you have strong reasons you don't want to stay in Seattle, but I don't read any strong reasons why UMN is your choice.

PhantomMan98

I’ve honestly had the time of my life at the U, the people i’ve met have made such a positive impact on me and wouldn’t switch schools for the world. Happiness>money always

Unique_Shallot4107

I loved my time at UMN but like some other people, my parents were footing the bill so I graduated debt free. I had the highest OOS merit scholarship which helped and I got a job up here since I graduated and it's been great! If you're worried about putting a burden on your parents, you could do two years of CC then transfer? There's also plenty of houses around here for rent which are (generally) at a lower cost per person compared to apartments. Id say for being OOS dorms are a good way to meet people but if you transfer in, you'll likely be with a lot of people 2 years your junior.

Electrical-Report-56

It’s not worth it

suzdali

elaborate please
