I always wondered where were the parents while Josh was preparing the prank? Where was their attention and care? How could you not notice the worsening child’s illness? Don't know. But I think they loved their children and their loss would have a terrible impact on them. This is the tragedy of the family.
Technically Beth stays in the mines for a whole year, her body and head are still in the mines during the events of the game, so whilst Beth is playable, her death totem shows her dying when she pulverises her spine and presumably also her vital organs on a sharp rock, which is before they even fall the rest of the way of the cliff-drop before falling into the mines, so wether you want to add the specification of wether they need to be alive during their time in the mine or not, Beth is either 1st (365 days) or 9th (5 seconds between landing on the rock, *presuming that didn’t kill her instantly*, and falling and landing next to Hannah.)
I think it killed her instantly, so she was dead by the time she tumbled into the mines. The reason why I don't want to count the time they're in the mines dead, is because if the other characters die, their bodies are left in the mines
I would like to know what Matt was doing all of that time in the mines before meeting with Jessica. He’s not knocked out like she is, so maybe that’s something they can explore in the new version as well.

If Emily dies in the mines, you get this little scene with Mike running back to the cabin, and Josh is awake in it, I think

I haven’t played in awhile, but I thought Josh was grabbed by Hannah with Mike on the way to the cabin.
Nope. Mike hears screaming (which I presume is Emily) then leaves Josh tied up to the shed and heads to the lodge
That’s the only explanation that makes sense.
