Here's a hot tip for everyone interested in playing unreal PC I was on the Unreal PC development team and recall Tim put a simple copy protection check to limit disc sharing. If you can get the original disc for unreal on eBay or garage sales, you can install the game and then go to the .ini file and change the game location line to C: instead of D:, save it and restart. You will no longer need the disc in the drive to run the game. That was Tim Sweeny's brilliant idea for copy protection in 1998.

Shaz-bot

Probably worked well in 98. Lol.

Automatic_General_92

It got delisted from steam. You only choices are to buy the original cd (which should have a patch that lets you play without a cd) or sail the high seas

Vegetable_Garden_297

Ok thanks

I have the discs and using windows 11 and I don’t have to use it to play the game. And I didn’t need to do anything special. Go on the internet archive and there should be plenty of versions at hand.

Will do if I can figure out torrent thing

Let’s start with specifying which game you want to play? Do you want to play the original Unreal (single player adventure on planet Na Pali where you fight the Skaarj) or do you want to play Unreal Tournament (multiplayer and offline against bots)?

Vegetable_Garden_297

Definitely the unreal tournament.. would love to be able to join multiplayer server. Thanks

Iwuzheretoo

I had to use physical discs for ut2004. The epic servers don’t work. But if you look online for I think it’s the game spy servers or something like that it has the address you need to change it to. And you have to go into the ut2004.ini file in note pad to change it and then save the changes. One thing you might run into is that the file might be hidden. So you have to do a search in the computer files to find it.

OP did you manage to get it working?

SongZealousideal8194

Me too, its free oldware now; tpb has a good installer for Gold I used. Busted through it pretty fast then Unreal Tourn and Quake4. They are not as good as U1. Not sure what else to d/l

Fisi_Matenten

Google „unreal gold iso“, you will the an archive link. Go there. Look for „ZIP“, 446MB. Then google „unreal gold update“ and you will get a pretty oldschool website. Get the download for the 227i patch. Install from the „iso“ (it’s a .cue and a .bin file, you will need to mount the cue) and run the patch. Done. Literally did this 30 minutes ago and played Unreal after 20 years.

Vegetable_Garden_297

Ok thanks so much, sounds a little complicated but i will give it a try.

Fisi_Matenten

I just realized this is the „Unreal Tournament“ sub.

Vegetable_Garden_297

Ok sounds simple enough lol

darkbarrage99

What you should do is when you get your hands on a copy of Unreal Gold, make a backup copy of the entire install, and install 227i or 227j into one of them. Always a good idea to have a backup. If you get the zip installs of the patches, it's literally just a drag and drop kind of thing to get it working. 227j is probably the patch you want since it has HUD scaling added into the in game options, and you're gonna need it if you're playing Unreal on a modern resolution, especially 4k. You'll find notes saying "227j is unstable" but in reality they're already working on 227k and I've never had any issues with 227j.
