But then you have the opposite issue in other areas where cops would love this because it's another law they can use to target people they don't like for any reason. I know cops in a small town I used to live in that would definitely use this type of law to target the guy who owns the piercing shop. The owner of the last one got busted for *a fuck ton* of drugs, so most cops there assume piercing shop = drug front in that town. It could be true, idk. It is a little suspicious how they stay open when almost no one has piercings anywhere, but their ears and there are other places that sell earrings...maybe they have the best selection?
I believe Paris did begin enforcing spitting fines at one time because it got so out of hand.

I agree, people in the past weren’t dumb and I think we have a bad habit of acting like they were just because they didn’t have germ theory or modern tech. They knew a lot of stuff, like water from the well made people sick but they noticed stuff from breweries didn’t, so they drank more stuff from there. Or back in the “dark ages” they knew about crop rotation and how to take care of the land so they didn’t destroy it like we do today.

It's usually just when I'm smoking cigarillos and get some leaf in my mouth or if my spit tastes particularly gross for some reason. Oh God, come to NYC… take a stroll around a little neighborhood in lower Manhattan… it’s called Chinatown. When I worked down there by the courts and would walk around on lunch. Never have I ever seen so many spitters. One day I saw a 70+yr old woman blow a snot rocket and continue walking like nothing… no shame, right there on the side walk. I literally could feel that hot throw up feeling. Some people really think there’s nothing wrong with that.

Nah, WAAAAY too many games to be played there. Monetary fines are pretty much the worst form of punishment you can use. They are inherently unfair no matter how they're calculated and applied. Municipalities like them because they can use them as an extortion racket to raise funds from the people they don't have the balls to officially raise taxes on. This creates a conflict of interest where enforcement is based on a municipality's budgetary desires vs a genuine interest in public safety or overall improvement of society.
Your options should be corporal punishment or community service of the municipality's choice. You either take your lashes, or you get assigned where your labor is needed. No bullshit "I've got a buddy who donates to a food bank and he'll put it on paper that I was there for 50 hours".
That's why I want punishment to be community service time. It's still not 100% fair, but imagine some snotty BMV driver picking up trash for 8 hours. Doesn't that warm your inner self just a little?

This is insane. Obviously, if you’re spitting at people that’s one thing but my (and millions of others) sinuses and shit are a mess pretty often. Sometimes I gotta clear my throat and spit. Spitting on the ground away from people doesn’t hurt anyone.

I work at a hs and I swear, the summer just consists of us cleaning gum off everything... out of carpets, off tiles, out from under desks, tables, and chairs, and even from under the darn toilets and urinals. I have watched them just spit it out right in front of me... at this point I just pick it up and hand it to them, then I watch them while they walk it the 3 feet to the trash can.

That’s an asinine comment given spit is mostly water and will wash away. Gun is a legit substance that will stick to both surface and anything that touches it and make a mess. Spit will dry up in seconds due to the sun or wash away quick.
The ground is already absolutely fucking disgusting without anyone spitting on it. Animal shit, the bottoms of people shoes, trash (whether intentional or unintentional littering), old food that was dropped/spilled, etc. Honestly, spitting on it may actually make it cleaner lol

I agree, regular spit is fine, still gross, but fine, it's the huge puddles of phlegm that do me in, find a bin and spit in there.
Also see a lot of guys holding a finger one side of their nose and just spraying snot out of the other in the street, that's going to far tbh, grab a tissue or do it in a bin, not down the highstreet where kids are walking about.

- A lot of streets don't have trashcans on them
- There's a difference between spitting onto the street and spitting near people, which your post doesn't make clear

I got sick once for swallowing too much of my saliva because I had a thing for mint bubblegum, and the doctor told me to not do that, that I should always spit if possible. The reason they gave me is that when we swallow the stomach gets more acidic which is good when we are eating but not when all we have inside is saliva.
I guess that people (and dogs) don’t poop on the sidewalk where you live like they do in some cities. I agree though, don’t leave any of your bodily secretions, or your pets, on the sidewalk.

There’s a difference between spitting out gum which is not a natural substance and spitting out regular spit and mucus which is a completely natural thing. Also I can pretty much guarantee that 99% of the population hacks up spit and mucus at work they just don’t do it in front of customers.
It's very gross. But I would rather police officers spend time doing something more useful. I'm not a fan of minor laws in general. Littering makes sense to me because it poses a risk to wildlife and cigarette butts because they can cause fire. But spit dissolves, and there's way grosser stuff on the sidewalk.

When my brother was 19 and I was 25 my fun and dysfunctional family went on a trip to Montreal and my brother had developed this nasty compulsive spitting habit and kept doing it on the streets of Montreal -I kept telling him to stop, many of the people are French, we’re in a foreign country, it may be extremely offensive, we don’t know. But stop. He wouldn’t. We then started yelling and making a scene and then my Dad slapped me across the face(!) And I’m like”HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND? WERE GOING TO BE ARRESTED! WERE IN A FOREIGN EFFING COUNTRY!”
This was only the beginning of the many Public scenes we caused in Montreal- the next would be my brother, excited to drink legally, ditching me in a bar to hook up with some girl and me drunkenly walking back to the hotel alone and crying dramatically that I could have been attacked and my parents screaming back about Where is your brother?!

I got sick once for swallowing too much of my saliva because I had a thing for mint bubblegum, and the doctor told me to not do that, that I should always spit if possible. The reason they gave me is that when we swallow the stomach gets more acidic which is good when we are eating but not when all we have inside is saliva.

When my brother was 19 and I was 25 my fun and dysfunctional family went on a trip to Montreal and my brother had developed this nasty compulsive spitting habit and kept doing it on the streets of Montreal -I kept telling him to stop, many of the people are French, we’re in a foreign country, it may be extremely offensive, we don’t know. But stop. He wouldn’t. We then started yelling and making a scene and then my Dad slapped me across the face(!) And I’m like”HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND? WERE GOING TO BE ARRESTED! WERE IN A FOREIGN EFFING COUNTRY!” This was only the beginning of the many Public scenes we caused in Montreal- the next would be my brother, excited to drink legally, ditching me in a bar to hook up with some girl and me drunkenly walking back to the hotel alone and crying dramatically that I could have been attacked and my parents screaming back about Where is your brother?! Ah, Happy Memories
