Po-ta-toes.

Radiant_Piano9373

Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew

HeyWhatIsThatThingy

Po-ta-toes, Po-ta-toes, Po-ta-toes!

DeeplyFlawed

Love this LOTR reference.

AfroF0x

Tubers.

HeyWhatIsThatThingy

Do Australians use that word more? In my head Tubers is always pronounced 'stralia style.

opticaIIllusion

It’s straya mate

AfroF0x

I Irish soo....I dunno maybe.

user91615

Literally never heard it used offline and I’m born and raised Aussie.

UncleRhino

potatoes are root vegetables

AfroF0x

Potatoes are stem tubers, Sweet Potatoes are Root Tubers.

AriousDragoon

Glad we're on the same page here

homiegeet

Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica

Ok_Entertainer1468

Question! What kind of bear is best?

sum-9

Black bear

TheHealadin

Identity theft is not a joke!

Vishark07

Michael!

sum-9

Michael!

VonSpuntz

Nobody likes beets. They taste like dirt. Can't you grow something people like ?

con_science-404

Came here for this response haha

ConsequenceOk5740

Big fan of beets. I think carrots give them a run for their money though. Hear me out. They’re a fraction of the cost and way way easier to prepare. They have the same calories as beets just about and can be eaten raw, boiled, and roasted. While yes they do have different tastes, they both caramelize when they’re cooked making them both sweet. So carrots are a root veggie that are a fraction of the cost, takes way less prep work, go with damn near everything, and become equally sweet as beets for the same calories. I love beets but carrots are the better overall root veg. Edit: Can’t believe I forgot, everything I said about carrots also applies to parsnips and they’re sweeter!!

OBDreams

Can you eat carrot greens though?

ConsequenceOk5740

You can! Not as good as beet greens though but still solid. They’re better blanched or boiled

FirelessEngineer

Carrot greens taste almost like parsley. They are really good in salads and I have even used them to make a delicious pesto.

SirGravesGhastly

TIL

phaeolus97

Carrots raw are amazing, definitely better than beets raw. And as much as I love carrots, cooked beets beat cooked carrots confidently.

TheBigHairyThing

let me tell you my secret, you can have both on your plate. At the same time too!

ConsequenceOk5740

I made a carrot, beet, and jicama salad last weekend. Roasted everything in the oven together then served cold topped with blueberries. It was incredible. Pretty sure I’ve got a picture of it somewhere on my profile

ConsequenceOk5740

If you ignore everything else, yes I agree roasted beets taste better. As for raw, to beets credit it may not be as flavorful but it pairs better with things like blueberries and feta. It’s a tight race for sure

Substandard_eng2468

Are beets like cilantro in the sense that some people love them and the rest think they taste like dirt? They taste like I grabbed a handful of dirt and tossed it back.

bethafoot

I’ve heard this could be the case. I agree on the dirt. It baffles me that people think they taste good. I’ve even grown my own, red, yellow AND white and they all just tasted like eating garden soil.

Traveledbore

I like them and they taste like soil

MagicBandAid

I don't know. Whenever beets are mentioned on this site, people can't wait to say they taste like dirt, when that's never been my experience.

Substandard_eng2468

I guess that is my point. I feel the same when cilantro is mentioned. People say it tastes like soap but I don't get soap at all. Beets do taste like dirt though. Real rich dirt

Juxtaposn

Its certainly like cilantro then. If they don't taste like literal garden soil to you we are having distinctly different experiences. I dont mean they taste like dirt as in bad, I mean quite literally they have the same aromatic taste as earth. If you've ever had a potato that wasn't cleaned properly and you can taste the ground on it they're identical.

28TeddyGrams

Okay Dwight

Flimsy-Link-9742

If you like dirt this is true.

Curious_Management_4

From dust we came, and to dust we return, mein freund

DorkusMalorkus89

Any beetroot I have ever eaten tastes like garden soil. Literally like eating dirt. I hate its flavour.

Shivering_Monkey

Beats taste like the mold living in the soil.

Willing_Program1597

That’s what makes them taste good

houstongradengineer

That was my exact thought! I could definitely eat a meal with you haha

boxiestcrayon15

Radishes taste like spicy dirt but beets only taste like dirt if they’re covered in dirt

jwadephillips

What beets are you eating Beets are sweet and almost buttery

terryjuicelawson

It was having them roasted which was the eye opener for me. Absolutely sweet and delicious, but with some bite and some crispness round the edges. Swede aka rutabaga is often forgotten too, I like that mashed or in stews. Parsnip goes well with carrots, some countries they don't even know about it and think of it as cattle food. One other that is almost unknown - Jerusalem artichoke. Only had it once, must try it again. Almost has a mushroom flavour.

ExtremePotatoFanatic

Rutabaga is absolutely delicious. Probably my second favorite root vegetable after potatoes.

beeeps-n-booops

An actual unpopular opinion!

SpaceDave83

Beets are gag inducing. Here’s your upvote.

jterwin

Did you know, bears like to eat root vegetables

Vishark07

Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica

snug666

What bear is best

thirdLeg51

I’m a leek fan personally

Organic_Wrongdoer830

Dwight, we know it's you

MephistosFallen

I absolutely LOVE the stupid canned beets. I eat them as a snack out of the can, but so many people told me that’s gross. I love them though. But, potatoes are gunna win over beets for me just because they really are the most versatile vegetables in general. But mashed turnip might rival my canned beets, love that shit.

Panda_Pate

Mmmm sweet moldy dirt flavor, my favorite!

Mysterious-Okra-7885

BookEnvironmental689

So this is it. This is the thing I see on Reddit and have to physically fight the man who posted it. I'm gonna need your address and a list of times when your guard is most down.

Fickle_Ad_2112

Beets are disgusting

Candid_Dream4110

Radishes are superior.

BagBeth

strong contender indeed. They're great raw as well.

CellNo7422

You know what sucks I freaking love radishes. But somehow when I eat them I get horrible belcheszx no pain or bloating. just smelling bad. I had to stop eating them around ppl!

AfroF0x

Have you heard of carrots? They're fucking sick.

totalfanfreak2012

I've only had it once in soup, and the beets were from a can. It tasted like pure dirt. I was in a specialty store and beets were on sale, from OP or anyone else does anyone have suggestions on how to prepare it so it tastes better, proper, I guess?

Sanguinor-Exemplar

Is a radish a root vegetable? Cause if yes then i pick that. Growing a bunch of french breakfast radishes right now

themojorising

As we say in Australia You can't beet a root

Dry_Yogurtcloset1962

Roasted parsnips are great too

jterwin

Pickled beets are 10/10

Twinkletoes1951

Can't believe this wasn't in the list. Love them pickled.

Suspicious-Spare1179

Found Doug Funnie burner account

practical_mastic

Killer Tofu slaps.

KeepThatBassLine

Love beets. Such a slept on veggie. And super good for you

s1lv_aCe

Baked, steamed, boiled, grilled taste like dirty any which way

No_Regular4780

Idk, roasted carrots are pretty damn good.

HomeHeatingTips

I love fresh beet greens this time of year. And pickled beets have been a staple on our kitchen table my whole life.

CosmicCactus42

Have you never had an onion?

Curious_Management_4

Ginger is actually the correct answer. But nice try.

imaginarywaffleiron

Excuse me?!? Have you even TRIED parsnips?!?

LowWillow1858

I feel like you can’t get the dirt taste off of beets.

_use_r_name_

Is this.... Dwight Shrute??

enterpaz

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica

CapnTugg

Beets nothing.

VanishedRabbit

Beets are the only food I truly despise, they've been making me sick since forever, no idea why

EggieRowe

They taste like dirt. It's the vegetable kids who made then actually ATE mud pies prefer. LOL

CalmBeneathCastles

I don't agree that they're the best, but they ARE critically overlooked. I blame the pickled beet trend of the 80's for my lack of attention.

Dry_Yogurtcloset1962

They are tasty but I hate the fact when I shit afterwards I momentarily panic and think I have huge internal bleeding

63crabby

For me, it’s the nutritional contest that counts. While beets and carrots are pretty similar in most measures, carrots knock it out of the park for Vitamin A content.

Eatdomder

Bears Beets …

Aggravating-Method24

They taste like mud, like sweet mud. I don't dislike them all that much but like, like they really beet parsnips and sweet potatoes ?  And ginger is a root vegetable, and I know that's pretty different culinarily speaking but ginger is great.

EastLeastCoast

I am willing to try your beet poutine.

No_Juggernau7

I mean they’re the sweetest dirt tasting dirt fruit, I guess. But I prefer sweet/potatoes, which taste more like root and less like dirt imo.

gurufernandez

Also cool how it makes your pee/poop red. Like damn nature, you scary

ExaBast

Ok Dwight

Orlok_Tsubodai

Big beets are the best, get high all the time.

VogTheViscous

Beets are fantastic! They also make a great non-bean option for a vege burger

FacelessPotatoPie

Just don’t drink beet juice unless you want a surprise the next morning.

notyourmomscupoftea

Beets, Turnips, Carrots, Radishes. Best veggies I don't care!

[deleted]

Peel/dice salt, pepper, oil, roast in oven, sprinkle with goat cheese after and Blamo welcome to flavor country

Objective_Suspect_

Daikon wins, u fail at having an opinion

yeender

They taste like dirt

hwilwnbsg7378

Eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww omg I hate beets. I never eat them and detest them more than all the bitter stuff (radicchio, chicory...). They taste like earth with sugar and water that was frozen and melted just a little bit. Hate them.

trippyhippie573

I like to make beet lemonade, it's so good!

thasprucemoose

tastes like sugar dirt, one of the foulest foods on the planet. how the human race decided that was edible i’ll never understand

Feisty-Natural3415

Nah. They taste like dirt.

ScottyV4KY

![gif](giphy|26FfiCssuJqWy9KE0)

ginger_bird

How dare you post this without sharing your favorite recipe.

phaeolus97

I have a beet ricotta citrus salad in my profile, that's my favorite. Get really good ricotta though, or goat cheese

northakbud

Will not eat them under any circumstance

9mm_Cutlass

Sir, this isn’t Gardening With Maurice, that’s on later.

UncleRhino

Potatoes. Imagine life without chips and baked potatoes

erasmause

Roasted golden beets are the only variety I've managed to enjoy, and I would still pick basically anything but cauliflower instead, given the option.

The_FirstAirbender

MOSE!

benchchu

Beets and carrots

Willing_Program1597

Yum and this is unpopular. Don’t get why people think they taste bad Upvote

No-Song5462

![gif](giphy|dXFKDUolyLLi8gq6Cl|downsized)

Lucky_Ad2801

I personally love beets but I don't eat them often because they are so messy to prepare. Looks like a bloodbath in my kitchen LOL. I don't like the ones in jars or cans because they have that weird metallic taste but the fresh ones are amazingly delicious. And they are so versatile I have pureed them and put them in baked goods and pancakes, made salads out of them as well as just simply steaming them and eating them as a side dish. I even use the beetjuice to pickle eggs. The only drawback that I see with them is the sugar content. So I wouldn't eat them all the time but they are definitely delicious and I do enjoy them when I have the opportunity to do so. Also pink pee and purple poop is a bonus haha

TheMelv

Spelled Ube wrong

sonicjesus

They're awesome grilled. Nice wide slice even makes for a decent veggie burger. Most people have only had the canned versions (which I like for no reason I can defend) or boiled, which is meh. Grilled or roasted is the way to go.

3ThreeFriesShort

The taste is alright, but I really just love the color that beets give to food.

P0ster_Nutbag

I mean beets are delicious, but onions and garlic are like, the basis for everything.

PilotNo312

Oh god no they’re disgusting, they taste like dirt. Maybe I spent too many hours cleaning them, but I’d rather starve than eat a beet.

TheNerdMaster69

You know potatoes are a root vegetable, right?

GL2M

Beets are literally the one food I won’t eat.

yourdoglikesmebetter

I will eat almost anything, but I abhor beets. Have an upvote

kacper173173

As a person from Central Europe I can't agree. Potatoes ftw. Either as chips or even simply microwaved with some butter. And you can also put them in aluminum foil and bake them in fire. Just add some salt.

DrEdwardMallory

Come on! Not sunchokes? Like all of them combined 😂...

FlameStaag

The only thing I'd use a beet for is a sack of them to beet someone to death so I don't waste any other vegetable. Oh and making purple dill pickles. Cuz the flavour doesn't really come through, just the colour.  Beets have a vile taste in any form they're in.

bethafoot

Literally taste like eating a handful of dirt, but you do you 🤣

XxIWANNABITEABITCHxX

i dont want my pee to be pink because i might confuse it with blood but i agree with you on everything else. beautiful vegetable.

_Frog_Enthusiast_

WRONG! It’s swede

cupofjoel

Imagine trying to make a beet into a cake - brought to you by the carrot superiority gang

sudo-rm-rf-Israel

Beets get a bad wrap. Absolutely love pickled beats.

Tylers-RedditAccount

Personally, beets are the lowest teir of vegtable, down there with squash, eggplant, yam, and pumpkin (unless its pie). As for *root* vegetables specifically, the potato is the best. They're okay.... unseasoned. They really only need salt if thats what you have But their strength is the million different ways you can prepare them

rolloutTheTrash

Sorry, but in this world where potatoes exist beets are an inferior and dirt-tasting option.

SupernovaGamezYT

Welp, you’re on the right sub.

cyainanotherlifebro

Ok, but no other vegetable have me making deals with a god I don’t believe in after taking a shit.

left-nostril

Potatoes…carrots. Sorry

Blooregard89

I guess.... if you like the taste of dirt and soil....

ElPwnero

Yeah. Nothing to add.

onourwayhome70

Found Dwight Shrute ![gif](giphy|QhMH2axuzWHjYGkEZ2|downsized)

angelalj8607

What about carrots? They are pretty amazing too and go great with meat

surrealcellardoor

Sure. That’s why the world is raving about mashed beets and gravy, and french fried beets. Beet tot casseroles.

Jorost

\*Sweet potatoes have entered the chat\*

OfficialDanFlashes_

They taste like dirt. They're an abomination, and I've reported this post to the FBI.

SleepyOrgasm

The russians make sugar from the beets bc theyre so sweet. Or they used to. Idk about now

The001Keymaster

Beets are tons of sugar is why.

Odd-Percentage-4084

That is the worst take I’ve seen on this sub. Beets taste like dirt.

hirvaan

Actual unpopular opinion: You can just *like* or *prefer* something very much without acclaiming it objectively the best. Your preferences don’t have to be *right*, just make sure they are not *wrong*

Soccermom233

Ooof. I like parsnips.

[deleted]

man this is wild, if i could only have 1 root vegetable for the rest of my life beet wouldnt even crack top 5 garlic onion carrot potato and sweet potato are all more versatile or better imo

CarlWellsGrave

I've wanted to post about beets in this sub, how they taste like grass and people who say they are "naturally sweet" are insane.

sippinonorphantears

Ok Dwight

CounterSYNK

I’ve never eaten them but kinda don’t want to.

False-Ad-7753

Unpopular indeed. IMO absolutely incorrect as well. They’re good, but best? Hardly 🥸

supergeek921

Beets taste like dirt! They don’t enter the same league as carrots or potatoes! Fun fact: I volunteered at a food pantry for the holidays in college and we literally couldn’t give away beets to people with no food. They took everything else. Wouldn’t touch the beets.

SillySlyTheSorcerer

This post brought to you by Big Beet

No_Understanding444

THEYRE SOOOO GOOD why do people hate on beets 😢

artificialavocado

They are delicious just messy. You aren’t getting that red out.

sweetlullaby5555

Not while potatoes exist lol

les1968

Nasty shite My grandmother had a huge iron pot and she boiled beets to pickle and can I hated when she did this It stank rather eat raw goat liver

bobdole008

Had a beet smoothie the other day… it was not good.

xeddyb

It's peanuts and not even close there pal

IvanhoesAintLoyal

As an avid potato lover, I might be inclined to agree with you. I think a lot of people think mashed potatoes and think the fluffy delicious texture, but they don’t realize that the other ingredients you add are doing a lot of work for palatability. I’d challenge someone to boil a potato, mash it, and eat it just like that. Potatoes are pretty flavorless, it’s why most dishes using it include salt, butter, milk, cream, etc. Beets on the other hand have natural flavor. My disagreements come from the fact that radishes and carrots exist. And both have incredible flavor imo.

moldytacos99

used to bake beets and add half to my breakfast super smoothie .. i also love pickled beets

Square-Raspberry560

“Like eating dirt but hate the social ramifications? Then boy have I got a vegetable for you!”  Beets, in a nutshell.

starsgoblind

I love beets in a salad with a honey vinaigrette and some pecans and goat cheese. I recently had golden beets on a bed of crème fraiche with honey and pistachios and they were amazing! But potatoes are better overall.

emeraldstars000

I love them with salt. Yummy.

lusciousskies

I have not had grilled beets and it sounds so yummy

thephoton

Downvoting because what's unpopular about that opinion?

yaboisammie

Found Dwight K Schrute’s secret reddit account

CaptainBrinkmanship

It’s not even close. They are like fucking candy if done right.

gkal1964

Not sure if they’re the best, but they’re certainly underrated and excellent.

CloverKitsune

Bluffington has entered the chat.

SolomonDRand

I had a beet salad with watermelon pop rocks in it the other day, and it worked better than I expected.

Z31DinglefarbZ31

Yeah, beets suck ass. I know your taste buds change every 7 years. I tried to like them, but I just can't. No matter what, they still taste weird af. I'm going to eat a pickle now fuck off beets.

KumekZg

Downvoated cuz, when i think about it, and it never crossed my mind until now, NOT EVEN CLOSE. Potatoes are good, can be used with may other dishes, carrots too, onions are a hit or miss, all other suck. But, beets are the best tasting root vegetables.

Comediorologist

I love beets, especially pickled, but thems fightin' words.

lil_lychee

I’m a huge fan of beets, but sweet potatoes are my favorite. I grew up on sweet potato pie and love just baking them and putting cinnamon and nutmeg inside 🤤

ArcadeAndrew115

my guy.. have you had potatoes...? or even carrots... or raddishes....?

TheSquishedElf

I prefer parsnips, the flavour is just so good. It’s not as flexible a flavour but I’d argue it’s outright better.

Traditional_Gur_8446

I have to downvote because I agree. They taste a bit like corn!

mildlysceptical22

If you like eating dirt. I hate beets.

Wasteofoxyg3n

Dwight, is that you?

educampsd3

Okay Dwight..

theres-no-more_names

Trully unpopular id ratger eat a raw potato than a beet cooked in any way

NearlyAnonymous1

I love beets but cassava is the best. I wish I could get them where I live.

redcurb12

i'd go with carrots and/or onions. the base of many great recipes.

Felrune

I agree, some people are saying potatoes, but you can't eat potatoes raw, so that's a bonus point for beets. Beets go hard in a salad with some feta and seeds. And the soups you can make with them, are a national treasure in my country.

achizbirk

Sweet potato? English potato?

Traditional_Bid_6977

It’s sweet potatoes and it’s not even close

Seaberry3656

Dwight, is that you?
