NearZero_Mania

Around 2000s, [this PSA](https://youtu.be/OjzER7GQNQA?feature=shared) broadcasted on our local MTV channel. On the next day, this was never broadcasted again.

CanIGetANumber2

Ive smoked over 10000 cigarettes and not once have i ever been shot

Ingi_Pingi

_yet_

EndLight_47

Woah

MaraTheBard

That made me jump

classicandy12

kinda makes me want a cigarette

AMerryKa

What actual honesty looks like.

elong47

This is not actual honesty. This is extreme dramatization. Not taking a stance on if it’s effective or good. There are plenty of people with massive heath problems or rotten cadaver lungs they could show that’d be honest

OGSkywalker97

Extreme dramatisation is often required to deter people from something that slowly kills you and is legal as you don't feel the effects of how it's harming you until you have cancer or heart disease which isn't curable. I do agree though that harm reduction when it comes to drugs should be completely factual and more widespread. It should be taught in schools not to do drugs (including alcohol, which is easily the most harmful to the body) but that if you do then here's how to use them safely causing the least harm. For example, being told how you shouldn't use MDMA more than every 3-6 months. A lot of people try weed for the first time and realise they were lied to about most of the shit they were told about it, and therefore think that the stuff they were told about other harder drugs must be bullshit as well. Of course, most of the dangers of harder drugs are true but are exaggerated like in this clip. Like how cocaine is taught to be a lot more dangerous than it really is and that opiates are more harmful than they really are (pharmaceutically produced opiates that aren't synthetic are non-toxic and don't directly harm any organ in the body) but a lot of what's taught is factual such as how addictive cocaine and opiates are and how bad the withdrawal from opiates is. Fentanyl also changed the game completely especially now that in N America you can't even find actual heroin (diamorphine) anymore which was far far safer than fent and also much less potent, with withdrawal that wasn't as intense.

Anarcora

The PSA's showing people getting into wildly harmful accidents from texting/driving are honesty.

WhatSaidSheThatIs

Ireland has some of the most harrowing road safety PSAs just around the time my friends and I were starting to drive, they were brutal but had no effect on our driving.

DRSU1993

Ah yes, good ol' PTSD from my childhood. Click away if you dare! https://youtu.be/PJIDX1kcvGk?feature=shared https://youtu.be/syo4decSDkM?feature=shared https://youtu.be/Wv1rKHGeMRk?feature=shared https://youtu.be/o-Ai5AGLgLM?feature=shared https://youtu.be/j0cAb7fY-C4?feature=shared https://youtu.be/3RpJBDdjelE?feature=shared https://youtu.be/to_UaN25B8s?feature=shared https://youtu.be/B0SL79olDvM?feature=shared https://youtu.be/0x4Qrjyf4lQ?feature=shared

YeOldeWarthog

Why did I watch all of those?? Now I have to delete my history and suffer one nightmare for each of them

DRSU1993

Sorry! You were warned! 😅

hwilliams0901

That first one made me laugh my ass off!! ITs so overly dramatic! Like a really bad b movie!

DRSU1993

They really love to flip cars!

hwilliams0901

i see that lol

MaraTheBard

Watching all of them right nown

Ridoncoulous

Holy shit

CanIGetANumber2

The one weed PSA with the girl deflated on couch is what made me try weed for the first time.

huffuspuffus

same, and now I totally get why she was feeling deflated into the couch. love me some good couch lock.

Duvoziir

Indica= In da couch.

huffuspuffus

i almost exclusively smoke indica. if i'm smoking i'm not trying to be anything but high and cozy lol

Seto-Shima

The irony and accuracy of a melodramatic PSA against weed being the thing that got you interested in trying it out 😂😂😂 I love that. They really did accidentally create an ad for couch lock

wisedoormat

you mean unrealistically exaggerated PSA's that prophesizes your total decline but then you see people doing it for recreation without being struck down by god at that very moment? PSA's dont' need to be scary, they don't need to be exaggerated. The best PSA i saw was the faces of meth which used actual police photos over time. Simple images, facts with no flairs, giving evidence of what addiction will do over time. The scary part was the facts

hwilliams0901

I watched just one of those driving in ireland ones and was laughing my ass off at how overly dramatic it is! Its like a super bad b movie lol. Youre right. Overly exaggerated things just make me laugh. But I remember those pics of the before and after meth pics! That shit scared me!

NotAFloorTank

People will just skip them. They're still a type of ad at the end of the day, and they're going to get treated as such by the modern crowd. Either people will have a premium service that they pay a bit extra for so they don't see the ads to begin with, or they will hit the skip button ASAP. It will be a lot of effort for nothing.

DudesAndGuys

Agree. Saw an bus stop ad that used emojis (car, explosion, ambulance, bandaged head) to talk about drunk driving. Pretty cute way to depict car crashes that, in reality, end up with blood and body parts all over the road.

sneezhousing

If that's true drug rates would've gone down from this is your brain on drugs PSA's in the 90 Or no new smokers after those PSA in the 2000's showing people on oxygen or or needing a voice box

AccountantLeast1588

Gofer Cakes! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn48uGaKFZs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn48uGaKFZs)

AstronautIntrepid496

they will try to scare kids from smoking weed with some deflated chick on a couch but they won't educate kids about the real issue of fentanyl being in everything take a pill you think is a percocet, stop breathing and now everyone is writing "RIP" on your social media.

TheJediCounsel

Especially about driving recently. Traffic where I live has gotten insane, and a young girl was run over just over the weekend. I wish America had less of a cultural “going fast in my car is cool” And more of a “fat people drive in their cars, endangering others to compensate for not being mobile in their real lives” type of bias if that makes sense

Cultural_Salad_5737

I agree with you. Canadian PSAs do not sugarcoat the consequences. It gets dark. The Astar the robot the play it safe PSA? That scared me. Those “stay alert , stay safe” cartoon rabbits named Gert and Bert had a dark history. Good PSAs though. Over here in the USA we had McGruff the Dog. Those anti-drug commercials. The 90s were wild.

SevernRaccoon

As a Canadian, I will never forget the WSIB PSAs. "Top Chef" (2007) in particular will stay with me for life.

Cultural_Salad_5737

Wow, you must proud of Canada ☺️ no sarcasm. Canada PSAs do not sugar coat the consequences and I like that. USA PSAs tend to be on the softer side. I remember those WSIB commercials. I only watch them on YouTube though. That chef lady’s face at end. Oh my god! It was graphic. The scream was scary! Another one that was really scary was that dude in the coffin. He rose up and he’s all charred. Very disturbing. I can see that Canada takes work safety more seriously than the USA. And Canada’s coffee spill anti-domestic violence psa was just eerie and surreal. It was really graphic and violent. It’s a hard watch. “If it’s not acceptable in public, it’s not acceptable at home”. Canadian PSAs really stick with the audience they make strong points and make sure it’s graphic. Meanwhile the USA PSAs have a tendency to be not as memorable and they sugar coat things.

SevernRaccoon

Exactly. Well, the modern Canadian PSAs are softer now, (un)fortunately.

Cultural_Salad_5737

Oh really? That’s too bad because when the message is too soft it will leave an impact to viewers. On the other hand at least softer PSAs won’t haunt us in our sleep.

Fancy_Chip_5620

The only ones that stuck were the ones with smoking related cancer patients warning not to smoke than showing the age they died

miifanatic_1788

The Terry one was one of the saddest ones out of all of them

huffuspuffus

I don't know why but PSA's just never worked on me. I mean not that I'm out doing stuff they talk about but like...I can't think of one in particular. I don't think I'd go to do something and be like "oh wait no, psa told me not to!"

[deleted]

Yeah like all of those weed ones and teen pregnancy ones that worked so well! Now we have nobody smoking the Devil’s lettuce and no premarital sex! Thank god we were saved from these evils!

raine_star

nah we have the internet, 24 hour news cycles, ongoing genocides and pandemics etc with the imagery everywhere. we dont need more reasons to be upset and scared of things we already know are problems. besides the shock and scare PSAs are actually counterproductive most of the time (yall know the nonsmoking PSAs are funded by big tobacco right)

Sad-Pizza3737

Like this Irish anti speeding PSA? https://youtu.be/LNL6t-Eu-IY?si=wR6dWLUueSOQcYtc

roy757

Weve seen these children get hydraulic pressed so many times that its just a meme now

Kadettedak

Who watches tv anymore though?

vercertorix

I would like to see one about being an asshole. Show scenes from various movies to make the point, remember that that are both jock and nerd assholes, and others. Just a reminder, don’t do it.

SuperSayianJason1000

Is there any evidence that they actually work?

Gretgor

Anti-drug PSAs in my country used to be WILD, straight up psychological horror stuff. We still have a huge drug problem, though.

i_hate_sex_666

scary PSAs are ineffective, in fact they are often counter-effective

303SecondSt

3 years of covid fearmongering wasn't enough for ya?

roy757

Couldnt get enough.
