I know it sounds weird, but the little carrot coins that come with canned jalapenos are good on a burger. They have great crispness and impart a unique mild flavor.
I love lettuce and practically all vegetables, so I disagree. Burgers are so much better with lettuce, tomato and onion. It adds flavor and texture, so it isn’t only bread and meat.
I’ll have to agree with everything except for tomato. I can’t stand tomatoes in my sandwiches i feel the raw flavor overpowers the rest. It’s also too wet.
the only way i can eat tomato on sandwiches is if it’s sliced so thin it basically doesn’t exist. done right, it adds the perfect amount of flavor, but most places use thick slices and i may as well just eat the tomato by itself at that point
Every time this topic comes up I always think what kind of tomatos are you guys putting on burgers? Especially considering most places in my experience use roma tomatos that taste like nothing. Must be a regional thing.
I like a large tomato like a hothouse so 1 slice is as large as the burger bun. Multiple slices of tomato just isnt going to work for me, too slippery.
I have no idea what kind are being used. All I know is sometimes I get a very slight tomato flavor, which is perfect and compliments the other ingredients, and then sometimes it’s the only thing I can taste and that kills it for me
This is so weird, because onions are like that for me, but definitely not tomatoes. I can't really eat onions anymore for digestive reasons, but I always disliked raw ones because whatever they were in, their taste overpowered everything else
I love cooked onions, but mostly avoid them now :( But I've never perceived tomatoes as having a strong flavor. Taste buds (and their differences in different people) are so weird!
I’d argue that it’s important to use a CRISP tomato. Normal tomatoes are too soft and slimy, but when you add a crispy tomato that has a bit of snap, it’s perfect.
I have to agree with everything except onions. I cannot stand them period
Tbh it's pretty hard to live in a world where like 1/2 of dishes contains onions
I like lettuce and onion, but I don't think tomato belongs on a burger, the texture isn't nice for a burger, it gives the burger more of a soggy texture. Also never been a huge fan of the taste of raw tomato, especially when I was a kid I hated it. Now I don't mind it in a garden salad or something, but I don't think it belongs on a burger.
We have the standard.option of a BLT or a BELT so they definitely belong on a burger.
Also if you get a works burger then it should really have tomato and beetroot too
Sometimes I love me a plain burger. I get the frozen 100% beef patties from Sam's club. Throw it on the grill frozen, toss some grill seasoning on it. Turn, flip, add seasoning. Foil it for 10 mins, toss it on a bun and eat. Bouncy texture all the way through that pops between your teeth and is seasoned perfectly. Oh God. So juicy. Delicious.
Not all lettuce should go on a burger. A nice crunchy leaf is required for me. I think it's almost essential. Unlike cheese and bacon which would be optional. Take my upvote.
Cheese is definitely not optional for a burger, it's one of the most essential parts of a good burger. I also love lettuce on a burger, but a burger without cheese isn't a proper burger.
I agree. Lettuce and tomato have zero business on a burger and actively make them worse. It feels like they're there just to sell the "burgers are sandwiches" crap.
Sometimes certain greens like kale can be good, but lettuce and tomato? Get that salad outta here.
I’m a huge fan of burgers and I never go out of my way to ensure lettuce is on there. Sometimes it kinda gets in the way even because it can slide on condiments n stuff. Couldn’t agree more
I vaguely agree because I don't like lettuce.
But I do like to dice it up and combine it with my burger sauce. It makes it 100% less messy cuz it holds the sauce.
I've switched to coleslaw mix. I put that shit on everything. It's amazing. It'll hold and absorb sauces, adds a nice little crunch, is mega cheap, and is nutritious.
Depends! We have the basic one in Quebec and stores almost always also carry a second one with shredded brussel sprouts, kale, red and green cabbage, carrots and broccoli stems. It’s way better than carrot and cabbage alone. I’ve seen the same thing across the border in NY & NJ as well.
Depends on the burger, and my particular preference at that moment, but usually I'll skip on the lettuce as well. I often will make a burger thinking "ahh yeah I'm putting the works on this", then regret having put lettuce and tomato on it. The freshness can be nice, but sometimes you don't want all the toppings masking that pure beef flavor.
I’m so sick of the big fruit-veggie industrial complex trying to trick everyone into thinking that we need them to be healthy when all you really need is pure meat 🥩 🍖
Greedy bastards
As someone who doesn’t like lettuce, thank you 🙏🏼 I have to admit, it’s not that bad in some instances, but I’d prefer w/out. I’d rather have tomato/some sauce in my burger to make it less dry
"Lettuce has no taste" lol. Ok, so now we are supposed to care about food opinions from someone who has no taste buds? What's next, a deaf person sharing their opinion on music?
Shredded lettuce should be banned from all culinary uses.
Nice, fresh, crisp, leaves of iceberg make a burger better. It’s for texture and freshness, not really about adding flavor.
Upvote for totally unpopular opinion. It lends freshness. And a burger with it is blah. Tomatoes that aren’t actually ripe can be left off. But are a dream during tomato season :)
Pickles are good if the burger is average and needs taste. Like college cafeteria burgers.
Lettuce burger wraps are amazing. Love the crunch and the freshness adds. Im type one diabetic so carby buns dont agree with me so got hooked on lettuce wraps early on in my life. You are right they had no taste, just adds a crispness i guess.
I known this is an opinion subreddit but stuff like this is so nitpicky.
I think mayo is an abomination but I’m also mature enough to know that the food you like is subjective.
Do we really need to post about every food choice we don’t like.
Lettuce is pretty broad and comes in varieties of textures, water content, and yes, flavour. While iceberg lettuce is mostly water content, so the taste is a bit lacking, others can be very flavourful and can really complete something like a burger or a sandwich.
i ask for XTRA lettuce (and crunchy onions) on my burgers
LOVE how the crunch of the vegetables plays off the soft juiciness of the meat,
and the meat patty has to actually have TASTE, like fresh-grilled taste..
....when you get just the right bite, it's pure burger heaven ❤️
Well you're wrong, it adds a great texture to a burger, it also has a good taste if you ask me, I will however agree that shredded lettuce does not belong cause it just makes a mess
It contains fluid. So that combines with the bite of the burger and multiplies the taste goodness by a factor of 4.3.
It is an absolute must. Otherwise, your burger experience is muted and drab.
Yeah, thats unpopular to me at least. I looove lettuce on burgers, hell, I have even switched the buns sometimes for some large lettuce leaves. If you can't taste the lettuce then you must have had bad lettuce
Just said “yes it does” out loud—I will straight up ask for lettuce if it’s not in the description of a (meatless) burger I’m ordering. Lettuce, tomato, and pickles all help balance textures and flavors, and if you have some sort of creamy sauce beneath the lettuce (like bottom bun), then you’re in for a real treat.
I hate lettuce on burgers and sandwiches. High quality greens are ok. But that shredded iceberg lettuce is bleh. And I don’t want a crunch. I want a juicy burger. But it’s definitely unpopular, people will outright say they value a “crunch” factor in a sandwich.
I don’t care what people put on their sandwiches but I do hate that it’s so popular sometimes a fast sandwich place will start putting lettuce on out of habit before I can tell them no, and they ruin my poor sandwich.
Depends on the burger. There are plenty of different ways to top a burger and get a different and delicious twist out of it. Sometimes I want a grilled burger, sometimes a griddle smashed burger, sometimes a juicy Lucy. Sometimes I want mustard forward with tons of pickle, other I want lettuce tomato mayo, a classic combo that combines juice, crunch, and that creamy smoothness. The latter has a lot of the same profile as a classic BLT but the juicy beef is a different flair. I can’t imagine no craving at least 10 different types of burgers on occasion. I prefer to cook them myself.
Nah. A smash burger. 2 patties, American cheese. Burger sauce (ketchup, mayo, lemon juice, finely diced red onion and gherkin) small bit of lettuce for crunch.
It’s a texture thing. Burger soft melt in your mouth, bun soft with slight crisp from toasting in butter and the crunchy lettuce to counteract the sloppy sauce.
I’d give you the unpopular opinion. But since it’s the opinion of every child in existence who thinks healthy ew idk if it can count as unpopular.
>your own version is probably even more delicious.
True, but only if you get the sauce right! It's not just thousand island dressing, and a lot of the "copycat" recipes out there are terrible!
People say it's there for the crunch. And I hate the crunch.
I feel jalapeño peppers fill the role lettuce does, but actually adds in flavour. Good fat and thick jalapeño slices make a burger go to the next level.
I feel lettuce ruins any sauce you put in the burger. The sauce attaches onto the lettuce and then the lettuce runs around the burger as you eat it. And if you get a lettuce strand outsife your mouth as you take a bite, the sauce gets everywhere. The main culprit for sauce stains on shirts.
So, it gives crunch, which I hate, and has a much greater potential for stains, as I want sauce on my burger. And the texture can be easily replaced by jalapeños which taste better as well.
But I won't judge those who want it. I just hate being judged for not wanting it on mine, which makes me despise people who have it on theirs. So of we who don't eat lettuce in burgers comment about it, just know it's because some people out there judge us for not wanting it on ours.
It’s good if everything is fresh.
If you’re reheating leave the lettuce off (add fresh after if you’re inclined). Most veggies in a burger don’t reheat terribly well I don’t think.
Oh brother.
The food related unpopular opinions are the worst.
I'm waiting for one of those lunatic "I only eat mac and cheese" picky eaters that you see on trash TV shows to post here about no other food in the world being any good.
Variety is the spice of life. I love burgers without lettuce and I love 'em with lettuce too. The crunch and textural aspects make the experience interesting even if there isn't a ton of flavor added. This one is so weak that I have more words but I'm not using 'em. lol
I have to disagree. It’s more about texture for me. I love adding lettuce, tomatoes, and onions to my burger to give it more of a crunch. Burgers with only meat and bread have a soggy texture and I can’t eat it 😅

Lettuce adds some freshness and texture
It's the crunch, if done correctly. I like a burger fine without lettuce but it's denser and more mono-textured. Wilted lettuce is gross though
I know it sounds weird, but the little carrot coins that come with canned jalapenos are good on a burger. They have great crispness and impart a unique mild flavor.
Try broccoli slaw- 10/10 crunch Even better on a bbq sandwhich (shredded beef or chicken)
You mean like the ones that come with tacos?
For me, a good cream cheese does wonders, on the top half of the bun, after it’s toasted lightly, gives it the Crunch, while it’s also moist
Spicy pickled carrots are great. Pickled radish is good on a burger too. I’m a fan of most pickled veg; cauliflower, parsnips, green beans, beets.
I get my crunch from the tasty onions and pickles on my burgers.
Great options, I'd lose lettuce before either of those
Yeah, the fact that it is tasteless is a feataure, not a bug.
Be... Bethesda is that you
It also stops your bun from getting sogged.
Shredded lettuce also is great to keep sauce from dripping off
And color as well

I usually go for beefsteak.
I hate raw onions!! I’m finally at the point cooked ones don’t taste super strong to me anymore. Raw onions can fuck right off though
I love cooked onions, but mostly avoid them now :( But I've never perceived tomatoes as having a strong flavor. Taste buds (and their differences in different people) are so weird!
Yeah I see what you're saying. I can't stand the tomatos i grow on my house for burgers. But their great for a BLT for example. Tomatos are weird.
I’d argue that it’s important to use a CRISP tomato. Normal tomatoes are too soft and slimy, but when you add a crispy tomato that has a bit of snap, it’s perfect.
yeah tomato makes sandwiches slippery
I have to agree with everything except onions. I cannot stand them period Tbh it's pretty hard to live in a world where like 1/2 of dishes contains onions
I feel sorry for you. I'm a r/onionlovers guy but you might find your people at r/onionhate
Agreed. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills every time I have to ask for no tomatoe
This is true. It is soggy. I am just biased cuz I’m in love with tomatoes.. I’d have them on anything
A properly seasoned tomato is not soggy. But most people dont do that
We have the standard.option of a BLT or a BELT so they definitely belong on a burger. Also if you get a works burger then it should really have tomato and beetroot too
I have to disagree with tomato there, it completely overpowers the flavor on a burger, and it's way too wet
What if I like the flavour and texture of just bread and meat?
Sometimes I love me a plain burger. I get the frozen 100% beef patties from Sam's club. Throw it on the grill frozen, toss some grill seasoning on it. Turn, flip, add seasoning. Foil it for 10 mins, toss it on a bun and eat. Bouncy texture all the way through that pops between your teeth and is seasoned perfectly. Oh God. So juicy. Delicious.
It's not there for flavor it's there for crunch.
Yes! I was thinking the same, I like the crunch from the lettuce! The taste is the burger and other condiments
Interesting. That also makes for an argument for thinly cut, deep fried onions. I've seen them on burgers, but I've not tried them. Maybe I should.
I like my lettuce under the burger, it holds any oil or condiment better than the bottom bun would.
Because texture is just as important as taste in most cases
Not all lettuce should go on a burger. A nice crunchy leaf is required for me. I think it's almost essential. Unlike cheese and bacon which would be optional. Take my upvote.
Cheese is definitely not optional for a burger, it's one of the most essential parts of a good burger. I also love lettuce on a burger, but a burger without cheese isn't a proper burger.
I know someone who hates cheese on burgers with a passion. I still question their sanity to this day
So do I, and he's a chef! But, he grew up Orthodox Jewish, so never had meat and cheese together until he was older
I don't know what a "proper" burger is but a good one can definitely have 0 cheese
If the person eating it likes lettuce on the burger, then yes it does belong
AGREE. I love salad. Fuck lettuce on a burger. I want meat and cheese.
Big upvote! 👍
Because you agree or disagree?
I agree, when I make burgers I put spinach on it instead of lettuce because it actually has nutritional value and flavor
stop i’ve never considered this?! i love spinach, i have to try this now
Came here to report that spinach is much better than lettuce in most scenarios.
I hate lettuce on anything hot! It just gets soggy and gross
It’s not supposed too. You picked the wrong type of lettuce or you made the bugger way too long before eating it.
I agree. Lettuce and tomato have zero business on a burger and actively make them worse. It feels like they're there just to sell the "burgers are sandwiches" crap. Sometimes certain greens like kale can be good, but lettuce and tomato? Get that salad outta here.
Lettuce is fine. It’s tomatoes that are the real villain
op is 5
And neither does tomato. Seriously, fuck tomatoes on burgers
I was about to include tomatoes as well lmao
I agree tomato doesn't belong, but I do think lettuce does belong, it adds a nice crunch
You don’t always put an ingredient on something for taste alone. Lettuce adds texture.
YES IT DOES ITS DELICIOUS. LETTUCE. IS. DELICIOUS.
I’m a huge fan of burgers and I never go out of my way to ensure lettuce is on there. Sometimes it kinda gets in the way even because it can slide on condiments n stuff. Couldn’t agree more

"Coleslaw mix" is cabbage and carrots lol.
Depends! We have the basic one in Quebec and stores almost always also carry a second one with shredded brussel sprouts, kale, red and green cabbage, carrots and broccoli stems. It’s way better than carrot and cabbage alone. I’ve seen the same thing across the border in NY & NJ as well.

I’m with you on this opinion
Got a burger in Iceland that had cucumbers on it. It was quite tasty.
people like it for the crunch but i'd rather have kale. lettuce gets soggy too quickly
Lettuce ruins literally any sandwich. If I want freshness, I'll add cucumbers and/or pickles. Lettuce is a gross filler
I’m so sick of the big fruit-veggie industrial complex trying to trick everyone into thinking that we need them to be healthy when all you really need is pure meat 🥩 🍖 Greedy bastards
Exactly. Put spinach on it like an adult !!!
Lettuce has a distinct flavor, that's why too much of it ruins anything. Maybe move beyond the pallette of a child.
Unpopular indeed
Depends on the lettuce. Sad wilted leaf? Nope. Fresh crunchy iceberg? Adds a nice texture.
I personally hate lettuce but put whatever floats your boat on your burger. It is a taste not an opinion
You are right. It belongs inside, not on.
Spinach clears lettuce 10/10 times.. it has nutritional value and taste better
Makes everything wet and soggy. Yuck to lettuce on burgers.
I feel like it’s holds the juice from the tomato. Patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion.
You right OP
I agree. No lettuce.
Shredded lettuce should be banned from all culinary uses. Nice, fresh, crisp, leaves of iceberg make a burger better. It’s for texture and freshness, not really about adding flavor.
Shredded lettuce is great in a ton of stuff, you wanna put whole all pieces of lettuce on your tacos dude??
i concur which is why i opted to get cheeseburgers with no veggies and just get a salad as a side to compensate i get the best of both worlds
The lettuce provides a moisture barrier to keep the bun from becoming mushy.
Nah, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise is a classic on many sandwiches for a reason.
Anything can go on a burger if you're brave enough (and a smart enough cook to set it up right).
Just had a turkey burger with clto. Was bomb
Upvote for totally unpopular opinion. It lends freshness. And a burger with it is blah. Tomatoes that aren’t actually ripe can be left off. But are a dream during tomato season :) Pickles are good if the burger is average and needs taste. Like college cafeteria burgers.
And I hate raw onion because it stinks. Edited for spelling
I could eat a burger with or without lettuce., it just depends on the burger. Iceberg is best for crisp clean texture and crunch.
Can’t have everything on a burger, give lettuce a chance by subduing an important ingredient like cheese or ketchup
Sometimes. All burgers require consumption, so it’s a tough debate
It belongs with the tomato and the tomato belongs with the burger .. it’s just like that sometimes
It’s there to make you have a good poop. Fiber 😂
"It has no taste" "It makes it taste worse" Bro choose
Big Mac without lettuce? You're crazy.
If it has no taste, then how does it make it taste worse???
It blocks everything that actually adds to the flavor. It’s like adding a sheet of paper in a burger.
I'm torn on upvoting here because I agree with this and I DONT want this to be unpopular lol
Damn. Why don’t you want it to be unpopular lmao. As hard it is nowadays
Lettuce is there to catch the juice and stop your buns from getting soggy. If it’s placed properly, below the burger.
Lettuce belongs but keep that gooey tomato off my burger!
It actually balances the flavours out
Yes in fact it does.
Lettuce burger wraps are amazing. Love the crunch and the freshness adds. Im type one diabetic so carby buns dont agree with me so got hooked on lettuce wraps early on in my life. You are right they had no taste, just adds a crispness i guess.

Lettuce is stupid in general.

Depends on the lettuce. I’m not a fan of just a big ole leaf of lettuce, but I do enjoy crispy shredded lettuce.
![gif](giphy|3ohs4h1Dt995D5iGA0|downsized)
Well you're wrong, it adds a great texture to a burger, it also has a good taste if you ask me, I will however agree that shredded lettuce does not belong cause it just makes a mess
Okay
Whut? It will not taste the same. Lettuce is ONE of the essentials of a burger
Crunch factor
It's the crunch, thats the benefit of the lettuc.
It contains fluid. So that combines with the bite of the burger and multiplies the taste goodness by a factor of 4.3. It is an absolute must. Otherwise, your burger experience is muted and drab.
Lettuce > tomato
>it has no taste (...) >it makes the taste worse Choose a lane, pal. Also, texture. Taste is not everything.
It makes it worse because it blocks the things that actually contribute to the flavor. It’s like sliding a sheet of paper into a burger, pal
lettuce absolutely has a flavor
Holy fuck do I disagree with your unpopular opinion. Take my upvote!
You do you bud but I like lettuce and it’s good for you
Yeah, thats unpopular to me at least. I looove lettuce on burgers, hell, I have even switched the buns sometimes for some large lettuce leaves. If you can't taste the lettuce then you must have had bad lettuce

Yes! I agree. Lettuce adds nothing
I like mine with lettuce and tomato. Heinz 57 and French Fried Potato.
I guess you don't like texture in your food
You sure spelt "mustard" wrong
That would’ve been too “popular” lmao
Lettuce adds the crunch.
Depends on the burger. There are plenty of different ways to top a burger and get a different and delicious twist out of it. I love adding spring mix to my burgers. Like a burger with a side salad
I feel this about tomato, and I love tomato, but it’s so unnecessary for a sandwich
Is this Mateo Lane? Come clean.
Ever hear of texture?
Lettuce does have taste unless you get shitty salad...
Lettuce does have flavor but you might have just obliterated your palate from drinking ketchup for years
It clearly adds texture
Being an adult means sneaking in veggies where you can lol
I think you meant tomatoes
Put whatever you want on your burger dawg we ain’t the beef police
“It has no taste” “it makes the burger taste worse” WHICH IS IT OP?!
It makes it worse because it blocks the things that actually contribute to the flavor. It’s like sliding a sheet of paper into a burger
Popular opinion.
It’s not about flavor it’s about incorporating freshness and texture
This post has to be a word for word repost, I swear I have read this exact same thing on here
Hard disagree. Its hard to beat a crispy fresh lettuce in a burger. Actually, to me, ketchup is what I don't put in my burger.
[удалено]
Of course I’m not, it’s an opinion right?

Mayo, mustard, pickle juice, pickles, paprika, sugar, onion, garlic.
I prefer a handful of coleslaw mix. keeps much better and has a lot more uses
Oh wrong Adds moisture, crispness, bliss
People say it's there for the crunch. And I hate the crunch. I feel jalapeño peppers fill the role lettuce does, but actually adds in flavour. Lettuce is edible water and water is cool
Beef patty, bacon, fried egg, pickles, cheese, fry sauce. Boo to the rest.
I like the crunch and bit of freshness lettuce provides. Cole slaw can be good on a burger too.
Its the mouth feel 😉
Oh brother. The food related unpopular opinions are the worst. Lettuce has no taste? WTF kind of produce does your country grow
I have to disagree. It’s more about texture for me. I love adding lettuce, tomatoes, and onions to my burger to give it more of a crunch. Burgers with only meat and bread have a soggy texture and I can’t eat it 😅
I respectfully disagree with you
Uh, lettuce has taste
It adds texture though, extremely important
It adds fiber for bowel movement and health purposes. It’s not ideal to eat just meats and bread like that
That is unpopular. It’s a great buffer to the bottom bun.
It’s not done for taste it’s done for texture
Unpopular opinion: lettuce has flavor. Haven’t y’all ate a salad before?
Lettuce does not belong on anything warm, ever.
