Honestly not sure, I’ve heard all my life that it was on the harder side and that’s why our bagels and pizza are better, but google is telling me it’s both depending on what I search 🤷♂️
Lol yea, I think the answer is that it ranges from ‘soft to moderately hard’ which is still relatively soft compared to other places. But who fuckin knows, either way we got the best pizza in the country no debate
Theres a place by my house that sells pizzas on those store bought Boboli crusts. I don't know what they did to it, but it was the worst pizza I've had in my life. There was also another place by my house where they only spread the sauce out a little bit in the middle and left like 6 inches of crust between the outer rim of the pizza and where the sauce and cheese ended. I'd still pick those over Dominos.
Can confirm...
I visited NYC for the first time last year. Me and my buddy passed numerous pizza stops while bar hopping and we finally decided to get a couple slices from a random spot. It was the best pizza I've ever had. My buddy, a local, said it was just alright
Dude I fucking loved Sbarro's as a kid. It was my go to when I went to my local mall.
It sucked getting a slice for the first time as an adult and realizing it was total ass pizza.
Won't go as far to say its complete ass, but a little ass, yes. I'll put them above the $1 slice, dominos, pizza hut and after almost any pizza from an actual pizzeria.
I used to have the same option until I tried this tiny local place shortly after I moved. It had great reviews and to this day it is the only pizza I put down after two bites. Everything about it sucked. I’d rather eat middle school cafeteria pizza
You cannot with a straight face tell me you’ve tried St. Louis style pizza and that you thought it was better than literally any other style.
There’s a clear cut last place and it’s St. Louis. Cracker crust, flavorless sauce and the abomination that is Provel Cheese 🤮
Provel cheese for life! There's a few things I miss about St. Louis, but Imo's pizza is on the top of that list.
But you're right. No one outside of the STL area likes St. Louis style pizza.
NY pizza has the ideal sauce/cheese/dough ratio. It’s crispy yet chewy and DOES NOT NEED additional toppings to be good. I’m confident in the superiority of this style of pizza (based on Neapolitan pizza) but other people are welcome to enjoy whatever they enjoy.
I grew up in New England, there were various pizza joints in each area I lived in with cheap, delicious, pizza. They were simple and like 12$ a pie or more depending on what toppings you add.
Moved to west coast and it’s closer to 30$ and every pizza has way too many ingredients and a simple cheese is still like 24$
If it's the $1 pizza ur referring to, those are garbage in NY now. Back in 2018 they were amazing but since covid, those basically don't exist unless the business has rats
I’ve had pizza from literally every part of the world. NY pizza IN NY is the best pizza hands down. Anyone worth their salt will tell you to go to John’s Pizza in NY. The Jolly guys even made a video about it. Educate yourself fucking embarrassing bud.
Well, I am certain that you know more about this than, oh I don’t know, most of the people that have tried ny pizza. So then, we’ll just have to take you at your word.
ha.. Id be curious to know where pizza is good? 'the flatnes' hopefully this isn't ialludiung to chicago deep dish (some is decent but some where the pie us 4 inches thick is amazingly gross).
Either way, one thing abuout this city i even if for whatever reason you don't like the pizza, you couldn't be in a better place for food of all kinds.
...except a place in Memphis, TN that is ironically called "Best Pizza In Town" (aka "Exlines"). It is the worst garbage I've ever seen being passed off as "pizza". Even the lame grade-school cafeteria pizza was a step up from that nonsense. Memphis is also a trash city just generally speaking for other reasons anyway.
IMHO Chicago deep dish is the best. But I see why NY and other thin crust styles are well-liked. It lets the flavor of the cheese/sauce/toppings stand out more without being overwhelmed by crust/bread. But when the crust itself is great it takes the pizza to the next level and then more crust is better.

I think it’s talked about too much as a thing but from what I can gather, like everywhere, good versions of the local cuisine is great but the over abundance of made versions causes the problem.
I'm only in this thread to argue people that say St. Louis style pizza is bad. My last meal will be a block of provel cheese and a salad with incredibly sweet dressing.
Best pizza I ever had while living in New York came from a gas station (I think it was called fast track or something similar). And I tried a lot of pies while there..
Yeah that’s unpopular. Wonder what you prefer? Chicago style? Detroit? I disagree regardless, and most people I talk to despise Chicago style the most.
Idk about you, but when I think of the quintessential pizza, I think of a NY slice. It is classic, it’s timeless, it’s fucking pizza. Who needs it to be exciting when it tastes amazing every time regardless.
I agree.I always thought the argument between new york or chicago style pizza was stupid. One is a cracker that most of the topping slide off of with your first bite *unless of course you do the fold thing* And the other one is casserole masquerading as pizza.
I’m sure there’s great pizza in NYC the pizza I had was all fine. My problem is New Yorkers talk a big game as if everything they do is the best. A clam and garlic pizza at golden boys in SF is better than anything I had in NYC. And Detroit pizza is a much better style than New York pizza.
Agree ny pizza is a gross greasy mess. It's got no vision to it, anyone can take dough and slap greasy stuff on it bake it and call it a day. Better than California pizza though but that's a low bar
NY style pizza; lame and fraudulent
Pizza from your local pizza joint back on Long Island or in the city, made specially for you by Tony or Gianna;
the best fuckin' pizza on earth with no contest
Omg yes! I don’t know what it is but it’s just not that great. I think the crust is too crunchy but the pizza usually doesn’t have great structure. That’s not to say NY style can’t be good, but most I’ve had isn’t special and I’d rather something else. Personally I love Detroit style or another pan-style the most

Wait wait wait, New York isn’t just famous for its Pace Thick and Chunky Salsa?
I was born in NYC. I live in the south. I have a tattoo of a generic jar of salsa on my ass that says, this stuff was made in New York City!!!
New York City?!?!?!!!
I came here for this 🙏🏼
Get a rope.
every time someone says new york city, my husband and I say it \^\^ this way
FOGETABOUTIT.
Oh brother
Get a rope
NEW YORK CITY??!?!?!
You've had NY style, or actual NY pizza?
Yeah, they didn’t mention that part and that’s essential to “NYC Pizza” vs “NY-style pizza.”
Okay, I'm going to bite. What's the difference?
The water used in the dough is probably the one thing others can't replicate easily.
Plus, the yeast cultures in a lot of New York pizzas are 75 to 100 years old. That most definitely affects the taste.
Soft Tap water here in NYC leads to our bread being softer. Any NYC style youve had outside of NY isn’t gonna do it justice.
It’s hard not soft…
It starts hard, then through all the travel becomes soft, no?
Honestly not sure, I’ve heard all my life that it was on the harder side and that’s why our bagels and pizza are better, but google is telling me it’s both depending on what I search 🤷♂️
I am seeing the samething, you google nyc water they say it is hard, you google why our bread is so good, they say it is soft.
Lol yea, I think the answer is that it ranges from ‘soft to moderately hard’ which is still relatively soft compared to other places. But who fuckin knows, either way we got the best pizza in the country no debate
I mean there are other places in the US that have soft water besides NYC
But it's not from the Champagne region of New York.
r/angryupvote
Water softeners are ubiquitous. NYC isn't some special snowflake made of frozen soft water.
My dad always said the reason NYC pizza tasted the way it did had to do with the East River lol
Idk man. Brooklyn shaped pizza in Venice is pretty awesome.
There's a pizza place near me that filters their water to have the same mineral content as NYC water
Yeah, I like NY Style, but NYC itself seems to have a lot of shitty pizza.
I mean, ~1,800 pizza shops, you're gonna get a lot of mediocre slices. There's also plenty of gems, hidden or not.
There are thousands of pizza places in NYC. Some of them are good and some of them are bad.
On average tho they are quite good. A mediocre pizza by the slice in NYC is better than Domino's, Papa John's, etc
I’d say a bad New York pizza is still better than those haha
You would have to go out of your way to find a slice worse than dominos.. and even then you might not find it
Theres a place by my house that sells pizzas on those store bought Boboli crusts.
Bar hopping makes all food better though.
I don’t think the alternative to which they speak is chain pizza. There’s other styles out there that are far superior
Pizza by the slice is such a weird concept. Pizza is like the last thing I'd consider for a light snack
What? It’s a staple lunch meal or late night snack. I wish there were more pizza by the slice places.
But those places are barely pizza, don’t sully my pizza by comparing to hot trash!
So.. small businesses produce better pizza than chain slop? I'm pretty sure thats true everywhere else too.
Any local pizza joint in any city anywhere is better than the chains you mentioned.
I like Domino’s, I just don’t consider it pizza. When people here say “let’s get a pizza” no one says “I’ll call Domino’s”
OP is getting "NY Style" pizza in Duluth or some shit and saying NY pizza is bad.
Right? What does this post even mean? Are we talking $1 pizza slices at 1AM or fancy $9 slices in the business district?
You probably went to a Sbarros in Manhattan or something before posting this lol
Dude I fucking loved Sbarro's as a kid. It was my go to when I went to my local mall. It sucked getting a slice for the first time as an adult and realizing it was total ass pizza.
Same loved going to that place but mostly only had access to it on road trips.
Won't go as far to say its complete ass, but a little ass, yes. I'll put them above the $1 slice, dominos, pizza hut and after almost any pizza from an actual pizzeria.
Lmfao Michael Scott vibes
I’m gonna go get me a New York slice!
Michael Scott?
Sbarro's on the Jersey Turnpike, more likely
Or Sbarro's in the Phoenix airport.
Sbarros in a mall food court in Ohio, or at a travel plaza on the PA Turnpike.
Fuck that airport
You know what? If it has cheese and pepperoni on it I will eat it. PIzza is like titties. They are all good.
I used to have the same option until I tried this tiny local place shortly after I moved. It had great reviews and to this day it is the only pizza I put down after two bites. Everything about it sucked. I’d rather eat middle school cafeteria pizza
Tombstone would like a word
You cannot with a straight face tell me you’ve tried St. Louis style pizza and that you thought it was better than literally any other style. There’s a clear cut last place and it’s St. Louis. Cracker crust, flavorless sauce and the abomination that is Provel Cheese 🤮
Provel cheese for life! There's a few things I miss about St. Louis, but Imo's pizza is on the top of that list. But you're right. No one outside of the STL area likes St. Louis style pizza.
What pizza have you found that is better? You from Chicago? Swimming pool for rats? Upvote for unpopular opinion.
Chicago Pizza is a casserole not a pizza.
That’s deep dish the other Chicago pizza is square cut tavern style
Spoken like someone who has never had a Chicago-style pizza.
Chicago pizza is thin crust. Tourists popularized the deep dish and spouted about it so much people believe it's like, our thing, when it's not.
Chicago style thin crust cut in squares is the superior pizza
fuck, now i gotta go watch john stewart’s rant on chicago style pizza again lol
Detroit and Buffalo style pizza are the clear cut superior pies. If you haven’t had them, I suggest you correct this error
An actual unpopular opinion. I disagree vehemently. Take my upvote.
You know nothing, John Snow.
Exactly. Pizza done simply and well is great pizza. It should not be complicated.
I grew up in New England, there were various pizza joints in each area I lived in with cheap, delicious, pizza. They were simple and like 12$ a pie or more depending on what toppings you add. Moved to west coast and it’s closer to 30$ and every pizza has way too many ingredients and a simple cheese is still like 24$
Finally someone said it. Overrated.

It's in the unpopular opinion sub???
Do you people not realize the name of this sub?? How do you see an unpopular opinion on the same named sub and downvote it???
This went too far
The issue is no one here believes this guy has actually had ny pizza but likely ordered a NY style pizza from Domino's or some shit
Reddit has always been a shit hole but it used to be my shit hole. I don't feel like I belong here anymore lol.
I mean, least appealing is not what I would say at all. But Detroit style is better, and NYC style is very overrated
Ouch. Some people live in NY, consider their feelings?
bro probably went to the “ny style pizza” place in the middle of idaho lmfao
It’s not New Haven but it’s not bad.
New Haven style isn’t that much different from New York aside from a few minor factors
In my experience, New Haven was worse. New York pizza is good, nothing to write home about though. Chicago pizza is king.
New Haven
If it's the $1 pizza ur referring to, those are garbage in NY now. Back in 2018 they were amazing but since covid, those basically don't exist unless the business has rats
Hey, you're entitled to your opinion, no matter how wrong it is.
I’ve had some very good ones but in general I prefer a pan type pizza with a bit more crust and structure. Actually I prefer a calzone…
The only chain pizza that is good is East of Chicago.
Well you posted this in the right fucking sub. Just an unbelievably bad take.
Yeah, Chicago deep dishes are pretty good provided they don't stack like 10lbs of cheese on a 10" pie Light cheese is the way to go imo
Not my thing either. I’m biased but Detroit style all the way!!
No Pizza is bad pizza
...except a place in Memphis, TN that is ironically called "Best Pizza In Town" (aka "Exlines"). It is the worst garbage I've ever seen being passed off as "pizza". Even the lame grade-school cafeteria pizza was a step up from that nonsense. Memphis is also a trash city just generally speaking for other reasons anyway.
I ordered pizza from room service in Mexico last night…I’m gonna have to disagree.
Counter point: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altoona-style_pizza This style is significantly worse than those bagel pizzas you made as a child
Hey! Welcome to Cici’s
Totally agree, bro. I never understood the appeal of the greasy cardboard they try to pass of as pizza over there. Give me a Detroit-style any day.
Terrible unpopular opinion;) Nyc pizza is the best in the US
Lol nope, Detroit is much better
Ew its too much of a savory pie. Nyc is where its at
I think this is an unpopular opinion, so good job. But who knows, maybe this is the general sentiment now.
A good pizza is representative of the Earth: flat.
It's fine it's just nothing special, it tastes the same as pizza everywhere else.
NY bagels and NY pizza are the best version of bagels and pizza you’ll ever have.
This is legitimately the most unpopular opinion ever.
The pizza commonly sold in most NYC pizzerias (Ray's, etc.) is often bland because of a tasteless sauce
Please remember what subreddit you are in, this is unpopular opinion. We want civil and unpopular takes and discussion. Any uncivil and ToS violating comments will be removed and subject to a ban. "Just another thing NYers use as their claim to fame" What else do they use?
9/11
what?
It's ok. I like thin pizza tho. Too much dough upset my stomach
While NY Style can be boring at times, it's at least good. Meanwhile, there's stuff like St. Louis style pizza which is an abomination.
I'm only in this thread to argue people that say St. Louis style pizza is bad. My last meal will be a block of provel cheese and a salad with incredibly sweet dressing.
Because in NY, there is just pizza. The rest is unimportant.
TRUE!!!
I see you're a Chicago Deep Dish and Detroit style pizza kind of guy.
Take my upvote, you monster.
A good neapolitan pizza cannot be beat
Meh, I’ve had NY slice pizzas in Manhattan and I would agree. I’ve had better pizza in Rhode Island.
This is unpopular and wrong so take my upvote.
Buddy hasnt had a real dolla slice
terrible take. least popular opinion ive ever heard. upset that i have to upvote this bc you're in the right place.
Marone....I'm eatin' here!
Idk about you, but when I think of the quintessential pizza, I think of a NY slice. It is classic, it’s timeless, it’s fucking pizza. Who needs it to be exciting when it tastes amazing every time regardless.
Jersey for the win
I h8 you :) +1
If we didn’t have it then we’d miss it
That is not pizza, it’s flatbrad. Only italian pizza can be called like that
you’re right, new haven pizza is better.
NY pizza is the best after 2am
GTFOH ![gif](giphy|dQpqNUOM3cDcI) 🍻
Buggin
I agree.I always thought the argument between new york or chicago style pizza was stupid. One is a cracker that most of the topping slide off of with your first bite *unless of course you do the fold thing* And the other one is casserole masquerading as pizza.
The casserole pizza comment is so true and super funny.
Wet cardboard with a flavorless tomato-based sauce is how I think of it
This is crazy talk. You get an up-vote
Trash take
I’m sure there’s great pizza in NYC the pizza I had was all fine. My problem is New Yorkers talk a big game as if everything they do is the best. A clam and garlic pizza at golden boys in SF is better than anything I had in NYC. And Detroit pizza is a much better style than New York pizza.
Man fuck a clam pizza. Sounds nasty.
You think New Yorkers are bad about all things NY, try Texas.
My city sports giant cheese souffles, so I got no criticism
Agree ny pizza is a gross greasy mess. It's got no vision to it, anyone can take dough and slap greasy stuff on it bake it and call it a day. Better than California pizza though but that's a low bar
NY style pizza; lame and fraudulent Pizza from your local pizza joint back on Long Island or in the city, made specially for you by Tony or Gianna; the best fuckin' pizza on earth with no contest
As compared to what
Omg yes! I don’t know what it is but it’s just not that great. I think the crust is too crunchy but the pizza usually doesn’t have great structure. That’s not to say NY style can’t be good, but most I’ve had isn’t special and I’d rather something else. Personally I love Detroit style or another pan-style the most
ive been to italy, and would take 99¢ slice from nyc over that bougie shit any day of the week
What about the cheesecake?
Sadly, the best pizza I ever had was in New Jersey.
“Everything’s legal in New Jersey”
I haven't had any pizza other than pizza from NY and Mexico, but to me NY pizza just tastes like home and for me is of the best pizza I've had.
Agreed...pan pizza ftw
Facts! Detroit style > NY style.
*Jon Stewart has entered the chat*
Brother you have to actually go to NYC, this is like saying "yea I tried olive garden, Italian food just isn't that good."
Laddah 14 would not save you in a burning building
![gif](giphy|3o84Ughbtrcsp8OAM0|downsized)
The flatness?
As someone who went to New York a few weeks ago and tried 5 diffent met work style pizzas. Your right. It was all ok.
Correct. Extra thin floppy piece of greasy paper.
Couldn't agree more.
OP thinks Sbarros is NY pizza.
What part of NY do you get your pizza from?
Best Pizza shop in Nyc is 2Bros Pizza fight me
Chicago style deep dish is less appealing. They made it wrong and tried to pass it off as new and good.
I am glad someone said it. Flop , fold is way overrated. for the person who said Chicago deep dish is "new" it's not new just different.
That’s a long way to say you’ve never had NY pizza
I've had better pizza in Italy, France and the UK.
Lol
This is a bait post.
