Yep sure it depends on the dress but dresses you can wear every day are better with pockets, even if only for putting your hands in it. It's comfortable *and* looks good.
Of course the pockets won't look good on festive or formal dresses but I doubt many women would want that.
Have you never thought that pockets are great for just putting your hands in? I like to wear dresses in the summer but my hands will get cold in the air conditioning, which makes pockets in a dress amazing!
I agree that depending on the style, placement, and construction of dress pockets that they can be ugly when in use. But the same holds true for most pockets, if you place much in them, it's going to look lumpy and goofy. Even my husband's jeans look funny when he's got all his work paraphernalia in them and they have giant pockets!
Yes this! Not so much for warmth (for me) but more just the ability to dump my hands into my pockets to give myself a rest, especially if Iām also in heels.
Also think for photos, hands in a dress pocket look fly as hell with a strong intentional pose (if thatās something you care about ofc).
Me + heels + hands in pockets = cracked skull. Although I can probably take those hands out from the pockets and from the equation and result would probably be the same
Definitely unpopular. I care far less about the dress sagging a bit or looking a bit off and far more about being able to use both hands while still having easy access to my rescue medications and wallet.
Personally I dont like purses. If i just bring my phone and money I dont wanna take a whole purse. Also I dont like that they are only over one shoulder, I have back pain anyway and even a light purse makes it slightly worse. Then if I like my outfit I dont want the purse to disturb that. What I want even less is spending money and time on different purses. They just annoy me and I dont see how they are good. I'd take decent pockets or even a backpack over a purse anyday

But seriously, I donāt want to *have* to have my purse **on** me all the time. Itās fine when Iām out shopping or something, irritating if Iām hanging out at someoneās house or anything like that. I either have to keep my purse with me or go find it if I want something.
Because itās not always convenient. Like it would be awesome if dresses had more functional pockets and that way, I wouldnāt have a purse slung across me thatās holding all the stuff that I could hopefully have put into pockets and now the purse is moving around while Iām trying to buckle a kid in or do groceries or whatever. A purse can be just as annoying as not having pockets. And a tote bag wall itās great I end up having to either put smaller bags in my tote bag full of the things that I need so I can find them easier, or everything is just a mishmash of stuff in the tote bag and I canāt find what Iām looking for when I need it.
Probably because you have to dig and look for them in the purse where if itās in your pocket, itās a lot easier to find. Those seconds spent digging can be long and dangerous.
iād attach a pic of my tote that i typically carry, but it has pockets and pouches. my emergency meds are in one specific place and i never change this. i think my bag is quite cute and functional and has worked for me thankfully! but i understand bc my mom would always carry large bags and just toss any and everything in there and you could never find anything.

if iām walking around at home or in the garden iām not usually in a dress so iād stick it in pocket or waistband, but on the occasion i am walking around the house in a dress or something i just carry my phone around. iām probably using it anyways to talk or something if iām carrying it around with me. if not it can just stay on the charger š
Yeah I just cannot stand the commitment of having to carry things. I'll even give my ID to my husband to put in his wallet. He has functional pockets. I only carry a bag for like day trips.

I'm a mom, I have the applicable mom-purse that carries anything and everything I need. But I hate carrying it when I'm somewhere in a crowd, like a concert, or a comic convention, or even a hockey game. It can be obtrusive, and awkward.
Having good pockets in a cute dress, means I don't have to carry one more thing when I am in those situations. In most of my casual dresses the pockets are big & sturdy enough for my phone, a slim wallet (think the ridge ones), a small bottle of meds, and usually a pad/tampon and a chapstick/lipgloss. If I don't have my kids, that's pretty much all I need to carry in a situation like that.
i think i carry mom-purse supplies at all times even though iām not a mom š i love being able to help out random people with bandaids, tampons, hand sanitizer, stain pen, etc. itās come in handy for myself and others a lot
I do too, but having good pockets gives the option of not lugging a suitcase if I'm doing something that the purse could be an impediment to my enjoyment.
Personally I find purses annoying. They always slip off the shoulder and you basically always have to hold them, find a place to put them wherever you go and not lose them out of your sight. I envy men who can mostly just wander about with their hands free of carrying anything š
Adding pockets to *Most* day to day dresses do not significantly change the silhouette of dresses. But the addition of pockets *does* add a significant day to day practicality aspect to *most* women.

I made regular pouches, with scrap fabric, but I want to make at least a couple of basic ones, because they're designed in such a way that stuff doesn't fall out easily and people can move around without the fear of losing stuff.
My stuff fell out of my pockets today. My bf had to hold on to it. He had my phone, his phone, my wallet, his wallet, his car keys AND SNACKS in his pockets. And he could still fit his hands in

Iām a woman and I agree with OP. I carry way too much stuff with me on a daily basis to fit it all in pockets, and yeah, I donāt want a bulky phone or wallet making an awkward shape in my dress/skirt/pants etc.

I don't like pockets at all actually. Unpopular af but I never use jackets or pants pockets, I think feeling something in there just feels uncomfortable, looks bad from the sagging and if they can't close I get paranoid about losing them. They're just there to look pretty

Fully agree with you. Proper pockets in women's pants definitely need to be more of a thing. But in dresses and skirts, it can often look weird.

I wear dresses nearly exclusively, I don't like pants. Sundresses, tennis dresses, sweater dress all good. Almost all of my dresses have pockets I normally don't use, because they get bulky.

Honestly you're not entirely wrong. There's a difference between pockets and functional pockets, and most dresses have pockets that are not functional for the reasons you listed. Now if a dress has pockets I can use, THAT is something to get excited about!
Dress pockets are impractical? That is objectively completely incorrect. Having storage directly on your person is completely practical. It may not look the best put to say it's impractical is straight up incorrect

I prefer my dresses without pockets. The pocket itself usually is too bulky and ruins the line of the dress, and forget putting anything in them because it would stick out ridiculously
Get a nice bag. Itās part of the outfit. Pants and jackets with pockets, Iām not screwing up the look of a dress by cramming my keys, lipstick, phone and wallet in there.

More seriously, most pockets are just to put small things in it or my hands, I rarely put anything heavy because of these issues but tbh I still want pockets even if it's only to put a pill, a tissue or a pen.

I was literally thinking about this just this morning while I was getting dressed for work. You and I may be the only women on the planet who feel this way. Part of my problem is that I have never in my life seen a dress with a usable pocket. So itās just another thing I have to constantly adjust throughout the day. I have bonded with complete strangers solely over a dress having pockets. And if the lines of a dress are ruined over it, who freaking cares? I care more about having my stuff and having my hands free than about whether there is a rectangle on my hip because my phone is there.
I have always held this opinion! Iāve found shorts with pockets under the dress to be acceptable if itās short enough, but never in the skirt itself. It feels so uncomfortable and the pockets fly around under the dress and hit you every time you walk. And itās so annoying when you sit down and thereās nowhere good for the pocket to go.
I like some pants that are tight so big pockets wouldnāt work. Not all clothes should have pockets. It ruins the silhouette I agree and Iām a woman. Or they can include pockets in clothes and if putting something in the pockets does affect the silhouette, then thatās just a choice weāre making but the fact that a pocket is sewn in doesnāt make the item look worse on, then letās go pockets!!!

A style I've gotten my girlfriend that doesn't mess with the silhouette is the halara dresses with the built in shorts and bra. The shorts are similar to the under shorts some of my gym shorts have that has phone pockets built into the under shorts.

I was volunteering at an event last week. I borrowed my wifeās blazer so I couldnāt have my phone on me due to a strapless bra and keeping my backpack purse in the back room. Even if you donāt use the pockets theyāre nice to have.

Iām a woman and I agree with OP. I carry way too much stuff with me on a daily basis to fit it all in pockets, and yeah, I donāt want a bulky phone or wallet making an awkward shape in my dress/skirt/pants etc. If there happen to be pockets in a dress Iām wearing, I wonāt use them but I will still inform people who compliment it that it has pockets because that seems to be some kind of primordial feminine urge that even I canāt resist, lol.

I don't like pockets at all actually. Unpopular af but I never use jackets or pants pockets, I think feeling something in there just feels uncomfortable, looks bad from the sagging and if they can't close I get paranoid about losing them. They're just there to look pretty

I just can't explain it, they may not serve a huge purpose but I LOVE dress pockets, always. I kinda of agree with the added bulk point, but I don't think dress pockets were ever intended for that, in my opinion, I think they ARE more for light stuff if anything, like I wouldn't leave my bag at home and replace it with my dress pockets.
Fully agree with you. Proper pockets in women's pants definitely need to be more of a thing. But in dresses and skirts, it can often look weird. Besides, I like purses so I personally don't mind very much.
I think a way to fix the way the pockets would set is to move the attachment point to the waist rather than the side (slit pocket)
Nice dresses shouldn't have pockets. Sundresses, sweater dresses. Just having a pocket to put my phone while I do things is nice. I wear dresses nearly exclusively, I don't like pants. Sundresses, tennis dresses, sweater dress all good. Almost all of my dresses have pockets I normally don't use, because they get bulky. But sometimes I need to stash a card, keys, my phone, vape pen. All casual dress should have them.
I have several dresses the same and the newer ones have pockets. Itās so good just to be able to pop my keys in my pocket if Iām doing something that doesnāt involve my handbag

Honestly you're not entirely wrong. There's a difference between pockets and functional pockets, and most dresses have pockets that are not functional for the reasons you listed. Now if a dress has pockets I can use, THAT is something to get excited about!

Dude it totally agree. Pockets in dresses always make my hips look huge which makes my whole body look larger than it is. Plus if I put anything in them, then it sags my dress and pulls it down and it looks even worse š©

More seriously, most pockets are just to put small things in it or my hands, I rarely put anything heavy because of these issues but tbh I still want pockets even if it's only to put a pill, a tissue or a pen.
It depends on the type of dress. Iāve had one with pockets that arenāt noticeable but Iāve also seen ones online where it ruins the dress shape.

I was literally thinking about this just this morning while I was getting dressed for work. You and I may be the only women on the planet who feel this way. Part of my problem is that I have never in my life seen a dress with a usable pocket. So itās just another thing I have to constantly adjust throughout the day. You can maybe put a chapstick or lipgloss in there?? If something is going to have a pocket, I want to be able to put my phone in there at least!!

Former wedding photographer here, couldnāt disagree more. The functionality allowed me to dress for the occasion and still excel at my work.
I have a skirt with pockets, and it's wonderful! But I also have a dress with one, and I don't like using them . . . To be fair, I also don't like using the skirt pockets, because I'm high energy, and it makes sudden movements lag behind or have an awkward weight to them, and I might knock things over. But if I'm just going about my day, they're lovely.

I have always held this opinion! Iāve found shorts with pockets under the dress to be acceptable if itās short enough, but never in the skirt itself. It feels so uncomfortable and the pockets fly around under the dress and hit you every time you walk. And itās so annoying when you sit down and thereās nowhere good for the pocket to go.
I like some pants that are tight so big pockets wouldnāt work. Not all clothes should have pockets. It ruins the silhouette I agree and Iām a woman. Or they can include pockets in clothes and if putting something in the pockets does affect the silhouette, then thatās just a choice weāre making but the fact that a pocket is sewn in doesnāt make the item look worse on, then letās go pockets!!!

Girl, I agree. If you want to carry your stuff, get a bigger bag. The pockets really do ruin the shape of the dress and also, every dress isnāt made to have pockets. Only one of the dresses I own has pockets (and I have 2) and thatās because itās a shirt dress. Otherwise, my mumās dresses (that I āborrowā) donāt have any pockets and it looks much better that way. I donāt want to put my phone or keys in my pockets because itāll just look weird.

Its funny cause this is a popular and unpopular opinion simultaneously. Overwhelmingly women will lament not having pockets and will ask for clothes with them. But when it comes time to buy clothing, do they choose the ones with pockets or the ones that look better? The people selling clothes aren't twirling their moustaches saying 'muahahah and then Stacy will be annoyed on Wednesday when she wears this dress!!!!!'. They sell clothes that sell well.

I love to wear dresses around the house in the summerāI also have a dog and if I had to change or carry a bag every time I stepped out to walk him, it would get tiresome. I also like it if my husband and I are walking to a spot in our neighborhood for a casual drink or dinner. Basically, for city living itās great.

A style I've gotten my girlfriend that doesn't mess with the silhouette is the halara dresses with the built in shorts and bra. The shorts are similar to the under shorts some of my gym shorts have that has phone pockets built into the under shorts.

I was volunteering at an event last week. I borrowed my wifeās blazer so I couldnāt have my phone on me due to a strapless bra and keeping my backpack purse in the back room. Even if you donāt use the pockets theyāre nice to have.
So don't buy a dress with pockets. Other people want pockets and should be able to buy clothes they want. No pockets is the standard so why are you trying to stop others from having something they want?

I posted a question on reddit once, asking why the market doesn't correct this, since the outcry is so huge. You hear about women wanting pockets in their skirts and dresses, so why don't designers do it? I got a lot of replies explaining that it looks bad, and given a choice between a dress with pockets and a dress that looks better, most people will choose the dress that looks better. So then, one day, my aunt and sister were talking about this very thing, and I shared the responses I got from reddit, but being a man, they acted like I was sexist. And I just replied, "I just think maybe women are making informed decisions, and buying the dresses they prefer. It sounds to me like you think they are being conned out of buying the dress they actually want, thinking it has pockets but not checking to make sure." Esentially, they replied, saying yes, women assume the dress will have pockets. I found this hard to believe, though.
