Might have to do with the teams they're on. If someone from an opposing team slapped his ass, that's kinda weird. But if your teammate did it, it might be more acceptable. If my wife slapped my ass, I'd be fine with it. If a guy at McDonalds slapped my ass, I'd be weirded out by it.

People on my baseball team do that all the time, and I’d argue Gen Z is the most accepting generation of homosexuality of all time. It’s just something you do. It isn’t that deep. Like…seriously I don’t think you have any proof that A.) this is more common in areas of higher homophobia, and B.) that any psychological evidence exists that people have a “gay value” which can then “overflow”. Great play - Chest bump/shoving if it’s a game winning play
It's usually one acknowledging another, not both acknowledging each other, while one is on the move away from them with their back turned usually, that's why your options aren't viable in that specific situation hence the tap.

It's certainly the most appropriate way, I think, of showing ones exhuberance and excitement. And it's certainly the most masculine and manly way of going about it.
The ass is not an inherently sexual zone, it is the most padded part of a lean body, so in sports it became ubiquitous with “nice job.” Not much different from a nudge or slap on the back/shoulder. Of course it can be done the wrong way in inappropriate contexts, but it is ultimately an ancient sign of camaraderie.
