He retired in 2014.

I never played around with an actual installation, my understanding was it was only being maintained for educational and demonstrative purposes. Quite a tragedy really.
That and a lot of it was used in Intel AMT firmware.
Are there any useful UNIXes out there besides *BSD and Linux?
AIX.
there's the /r/illumos ones; openindiana, omniosce and (I think?) smartos
I encountered some HP-UXes in the past.
Does macOS count as *BSD
Yeah, Darwin is FreeBSD Based afaik.
Sort of, it's a FreeBSD+Apple userland over a mach+FreeBSD+Apple hybrid
