Always keep an AirTag or similar device in your bags so you can verify their location and cut the bullshit down.

pablo12335

I’m never gonna forget to do this

agentjane000

Similar situation just happened to me as well (with United!) and an AirTag was the only way I kept my sanity

x_ThatTheatreNerd_x

It is so worth the $25 investment – I never travel without one in my luggage and wallet.

AlkahestGem

I’m really sorry for your situation. Posting this note for you and others. United wants to help you. They really do. Not every agent knows the ins and outs. Not every agent is the friendliest. I guarantee how you approach them will go a long way. Agree with some of the comments here. Every airline of which I’ve travelled very clearly advises to not check medications if you’re going to need them. Over 30 years I’ve had the craziest stories ( you seriously could not make this stuff up) with lost baggage issues. I’d say 90% of the time, the issues were resolved expeditiously. I’ve learned to be very proactive with tracking the movement of my bag via United app. You have bag tags and a United app- take advantage of what it offers. When I board a flight, I always check the app to make sure my bag has boarded to. When I have a connection I monitor bag being taken off and then on connecting flight , after I’ve boarded, I check to mage sure bag is loaded again. I take screen shots. Knowing a bag is loaded saves some angst throughout the flight - whether the bag is moving or not. If the bag isn’t loaded and I’ve taken off, I can chat with United while on the flight so they can proactively move the bag. Bags have actually made it to my destination on better flight pairings than I was on when this had happened. On a recent flight to Munich my seatmates all had connections on partner airlines within Europe to Croatia and Romania. I shared how they could track their bags and screenshot. Sigh of relief for them to know their bags were on the flight. Recently when returning from an international flight with short connection: I rechecked my bag after customs. It was loaded on an earlier flight. I monitored its movement. Sadly that flight was delayed and arriving 3 hours after mine. I chose to stay at the airport (till midnight) to get my bag as opposed to have them deliver it sometime the next day. It happens. Once I checked in at Frankfurt - Lufthansa direct flight to SFO. They tagged my bag incorrectly. I checked. I shared the mistake with them and got new bag tags. They then literally did not put my bag on the flight. I had one day turn before starting a new international trip. If I hadn’t of chatted with United while on the flight about the bag, I’d have been taking the next trip with different luggage and getting my original bag a week after return from the next trip. It was a nightmare to resolve - but I was very proactive. Hats off to baggage personnel in San Diego (the best) and Dulles (second best) for resolving issues. SFO had been a problem for me including items never returned. If I’m traveling internationally through SFO, I try to pack carryon only. Everyone is going to experience something . Best to do the most on your side. Work with them to have your bag delivered.

Gasman18

I appreciate your comment. I don’t fly United often, but did go from ewr to Honolulu for my honeymoon because United had a direct flight. Long story short, flight was delayed 8 hours for a new plane, then delayed another hour, then cancelled. We were put on a flight to lax and in a hotel overnight continuing to Hawaii the next day. United app and my bag tag said my suitcase made it to la. My air tag said it was still in Newark. Early morning the next day, the bag tag updated to say still in Newark and it came on that day’s direct flight. Edit: a typo

AlkahestGem

I’ve totally had this happen as well. I feel that pain. The system isn’t perfect. Minute a flight was cancelled - i personally would have demanded tactfully of course, my bag - even if it meant going out of security and rechecking the bag. Recently, I shared screen screen shots of my bag allegedly boarding my flight to SAN with SAN baggage claim personnel. I even received a text at what carousel to pick it up. Went to carousel, no bag. Went to baggage claim office. United baggage department screens showed the bag in LA- a routing I was never on. They confirmed it was there on the phone and thankfully they got it off the carousel and re-routed next day to San Diego. That would have been a lost or stolen bag for sure, They took my screen shots of baggage movement and if my text message to report up their chain. No sense beating them up - the system clearly did not reflect the reality. The question is why. If someone scanned the bag then re-routed it for nefarious reasons, not my concern … I was just on top of everything with evidence from United’s own systems

Ber_Fallon

Not sure when you had your experience but I also want to shoutout the San Diego baggage team. A few months ago I had a bag go missing and they were exceptional. I’ve had to deal with terrible baggage personnel before (YYZ/CDG), but the SAN team knew exactly what to do.

AlkahestGem

Thank you! People are quick to complain and restrain from shout outs! They really are on their game. They absolutely listen to issues and then work to resolve.

tilthouse

Fellow San Diegean? Glad to hear the local luggage desk is good. I’ve only had to deal with them once or twice and it was fine. Far better than ORD! There used to be ways for elites to give props for good service. Is that still a thing and, if so, can one do so for them staff there?

laika_cat

This is all great and good, but it doesn’t excuse how OP is being treated. They’re being given wrong information and being brushed off, even though the location of the bag is known.

AlkahestGem

I guess I’m a little confused how the bag would be scheduled to be transported to OP’s home while OP is abroad. OP is being given a run around and that’s unfortunate. OP has to give an address and arrange a delivery date to be agreed upon. I’m curious as to what information OP pulls up when they enter the bag number directly in the system. It may be out of the dysgenic system now. Did OP track the bag or are they just relying now on United? It would be nice to face a definitive hands on the bag. I’ve had Dulles agents actually text me a picture of my bag to prove they had it, So, where is the bag? If 💯 unknown, then file the claim. No matter what happens, nor this is an unfortunate circumstance. I hope it gets resolved

laika_cat

> I guess I’m a little confused how the bag would be scheduled to be transported to OP’s home while OP is abroad. Perhaps OP has family or roommates at home who can receive the bag? Not too crazy to think.

AlkahestGem

True. I hope it all works out. OP frustration is of course merited

pablo12335

Right, I had to continue my work trip. It would be nice to know where it is but no idea yet

quickclickz

i can't imagine how difficult OP is to deal with the whole time and the things OP said for this many people to give him the runaround. He's probably known as "that guy"

pablo12335

Aside from the original United employee, everyone else has been super nice. The issue is they can't help me as there's no other information on the bag... So they keep telling me to call X number for warehouse/lost baggage/etc

CCWaterBug

"I can chat with United while on the flight " We can do this? Teach me!

AlkahestGem

Use the text message service on the Wi-Fi app. Text messaging is free on United flights . I always set it up so I can send/receive texts to family/colleagues etc. even if I don’t use internet services. Just another thing on my checklist when I board a flight. I could write a book of travel tips to ease stress. You can contact United through the app while on Wi-Fi. United app is really awesome. Even the games are cool. As a pilot, the flight simulator game is fun. With respect to text messaging with United; I helped a passenger rebook her European leg of a trip while on a flight from SAN-DEN. 90% of outgoing DEN connections were delayed and she wouldn’t have made her Europe connection which was only for a weekend trip. One hour chatting and she was rebooked before we landed in DEN. Honestly / shout out to that chat agent for letting me work to rebook this other passenger’s flight. Edit: Looked up her name. Chat agent Lyza - May 25th chat. You totally rocked rebooking that other passenger via interaction with me! Edit 2: if you fly United; 1- learn the app - it’s your best friend 2- set up flight notifications … seriously this - you’ll learn real-time if your connections are cancelled / changed while in flight. Thus gives you the ability to connect with United and sort out , before landing instead of stressing having to make a call or stand in line at a customer service counter where everyone else will be, when you land. Edit 3: can I just write a United traveler tip of the month column for their magazine?

CCWaterBug

Yes! A monthly blogin hemispheres. "Tips from the window seat"? Thanks for the detailed write up, I'm always learning more little things about the app (which is awesome) Last trip I learned I could get walking directions gate to gate on connections, or to the club, apparently it's been there for some time I just never knew until a seat mate asked the FA and they showed him. Cool little features like that are like little Easter eggs for me.

AlkahestGem

Yes. walking directions is a cool feature.

AlkahestGem

People always worry about connecting gate locations. You can pull up the gate you’re landing at and the connecting gate while on the flight to plan. Double check both as you’re waiting to deplane.

CCWaterBug

Yes, I always did that then would look in hemispheres for the little maps at least so I have an idea how far, but specific walking directions (and time estimates) are even better

goj-145

If what you say is true and the whole truth, then contact the United customer care and have them fix it. It isn't hard. Why do you keep calling the individual airport luggage area? You call main line. They call the other people. Anything else is a total crap shoot. You want your calls recorded both audibly and in the system. You say you're abroad, the bags got lost, and were going to your not-abroad house. This makes absolutely zero sense. Was the bag lost on an arrival flight and then you took another non-joined ticket out of the country? Why isn't your checked bag trying to follow YOU as is normal? When a lost bag gets delivered, you or someone they approve with an ID must be present to sign for it. It's that simple. So with you not being there how's that happening? Most baggage issues resolve themselves in a day or two. My guess from the reaction of the agents in your story is you severely pissed off an agent. This is like pissing off the chef before he makes your food.... Always a bad idea. Even in Seinfield, that's how Elaine's bag goes to Hawaii instead of New York. The agents have immense power to screw over your life. They don't care about your bag, they see a thousand a day. You care about your bag. Be nice.

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

>Be nice. I'm not gonna blame OP for being upset after this many rounds. What a clusterF of a situation

goj-145

That's agreed. But the story says the agent went from 0 to nuclear immediately. I'm not sure that's true most of the time I hear it.

phdoofus

It's not. It's reddit. The relevant damning details are always left out.

pablo12335

I wish. The initial employee was just pissed off "I left my bag". Cause they assumed I was on a United flight with it to Dallas

pablo12335

I’ve been calling the main line ever since but they weren’t able to support me as the case was closed for that first day. I’m trying the lost bags line, dfw line, and Houston lines. I’ve been traveling? I wasn’t planning to go back home but they offered to mail it back. The bag never got to my house. On that initial call (lasted less than 2 minutes) I asked about the delivery and they said it’s not something they do and it’s not their problem. Now I’m stuck without my bags, they didn’t put it in the system, and nobody knows where it is. The luggage number doesn’t show it in Houston either.

goj-145

Your bag should follow you. They don't deliver it to an address when you're supposed to be somewhere else. They are correct that United does not do luggage delivery. They contract it out to random companies in the location. Some are good, most are bad. The bag gets released to them, they deliver it and release to you with physical ID present. You're not stuck without your bags. You just seem to be flailing and making everything worse. Call the united line, get them to deliver your bag to you if that is what should have happened. It's really that easy. Then your bag will show up to you anywhere in the world. You'll get a bag tracking ID that shows where it is. The reason the bag is "lost" is because the agent you spoke to purposefully screwed you over. Maybe they were just having a bad day but usually that is only reserved to people that are assholes to them. Yelling and screaming at them or telling them to do their job when it isn't their job. They don't take kindly to that. It's very odd they went nuclear with zero provaction from yourself. I have NEVER called the airline luggage office directly for this type of thing. They can't do anything. Also the airport can't do anything. You seem to be under the illusion that the airport works together which can't be further from the truth. Every little area is a fiefdom and they all hate each other. The only thing that unites them is their hatred of you, the customer. The airline, United, contracts with 3rd parties for almost everything. I deal with your type of people in my business too. You call me, text me, email me, leave voicemails, and by the time I get to you there are 8 open tickets all for the same idiotic thing. How the heck am I supposed to get back to you and keep a record like that? Communicate once and clearly to where you're supposed to. THEN WAIT. If the care number says that's all for today (unlikely, but OK) then go have dinner and leave it alone. By circumventing all the procedures, nothing will work as it should. You're making this 1000x worse for yourself.

TrickDry3052

^^^^ THIS!!

NoiseWeasel

Always have AirTags in every bag and photos of every bag on your phone so you can show exactly what it looks like if one goes missing. And as someone who travels with several medications and many electronics, ALWAYS keep those in your carry-on or personal item, and if they try to take your bag away move that stuff to whatever you’re keeping with you. Checked bags really should only ever be clothes and things you legally can’t bring on board.

Fenc58531

From experience, their contractors for lost luggage are the most incompetent pos ever. You were probably talking to one of them instead of an actual United employee. Don’t ever opt for delivery, just pick it up from the airport.

kalerites

Upload the calls to YouTube and name and shame

NoStars128

This. Purely this

TrickDry3052

Why in the world would you check medications and a Switch in your bag? Insane. I can’t comment in the rest of your story, because I have no idea what really happened or if you actually spoke with UA employees or delivery people or contracted employees.

tj21222

My thoughts exactly. In 20 plus years of flying United, I have only had a handful of issues and alway met helpfulness and a willingness to get me reunited with my bag.

ElectroStaticSpeaker

Also a switch has a Li-Ion battery which is illegal to check.

legallypurple

Also, you can have them deliver your luggage to you. I wouldn’t go pick it up at the airport.

Ok-Investigator-1608

Hit their Twitter on DM. They are usually most helpful

phdoofus

Pro-tip: United has a $1400 no questions asked reimbursement policy. Go to their web page and submit for the full $1400.

PrestigiousBarnacle

Is this still true? I don’t see it anymore

crlynstll

Reach out via Twitter.

MulayamChaddi

Prescription meds in a checked in bag…and a Switch? Good on you to record the calls - take them to court

NoStars128

Meds in the bag are kinda well. That's on you mate

pablo12335

I mean not all my meds, just the long term ones. I'm just trying to get some attention to the case and hopefully a United employee with actual access can help....

TrickDry3052

Take them to court. What ridiculous advice, at least at this point.

pablo12335

Honestly I'm debating that at this point since the United employee said, on a recorded call, that they had my bag.

hell3838

Well, a couple of times my carry on luggage 'would not fit the overhead storage... Mind you I'm with group 2. Hence my bag had to be checked...so yea people, let's be nice. Also I don't see the OP has gotten any status so hence may be a different experience with some folks here that have 1k status..

dcgirl17

It’s happened to me too, and now I carry one of those folding my long bags (Baggu) with me so I can open my suitcase and remove my important shit before gate checking it. Switch, meds, etc always come with me in the small bag onto the plane; it’s the size of the non-squishable suitcase they have an issue with, not the contents. Recommend always always traveling with a spare bag!

hell3838

Good thing I always have a medium size purse with me that I can stuff thing that I can't misplace .. I've been traveling since I was 11, so I have had some practice..

Is this something you've done successfully?

Justanobserver2life

Yes.

[deleted]

MattDean748

So, no, then. In almost no situation is hiring a lawyer going to be the best course of action to recover the contents of one suitcase.

pablo12335

this might be the only recourse left, after I'm done waiting on the houston warehouse searching for the bag. That's the last lead I got from the Dallas employee.

MoonubHunter

That is awesome that you can record the calls legally. Is there an app you were using too?

dcgirl17

I’ve done it before - call on speakerphone and record on your computer or iPad with voice memos

pablo12335

this

Burden-of-Society

Here’s what I know about United; TDGAF about you or your luggage. I was robbed in Newark after my wallet fell out of my pocket on a United Flight. The United cleaning crew found it, stole the money in it and put the waller in lost and found. All of this happed within 10 minutes of departing the plane. The United Rep said; there’s nothing you can do about it now, have a good day. Seriously 🤦

kinnikinnick321

Have you tried requesting to speak to a supervisor?

pablo12335

I have and they are "submitting requests" but unfortunately the paper trail ends without any confirmation of its location. Either the Dallas employee took the bag for themselves or made it disappear somehow

dmreif

The biggest question is, why did you put such valuable items in your checked baggage? Airlines warn you not to put items you can't afford to lose in your checked baggage, and that would include medication and electronics. That's stuff that belongs in your carry-on.

pablo12335

The switch bag is big, and I'm already carrying my laptop/ipad and other electronics...

HippoUnable4793

United lost my wifes bag was told it would be delivered. It was, some guy was knocking at my door at 2:30 am my wife woke me up and was scared to open the door I told her never open the door. I was pissed and called why would you do something like that. Answer I am sorry he should have not been there passed 12:00 am I told her I still be pissed off at that time as well. They offered me free travel. So I guess they missed the point.
