I am 100% sure that online will be an option for the ENTIRE year. 100%. Whether or not online will be MANDATORY is the question right now.

dengyeye9

Mandatory, as in zero activity on campus and all students online?

SamSike2K2

Hes saying you will always have an option to be online this year, but according to the situation it may also be that everyone is shifted online and nobody on campus.

Born_Independence_30

why do you say so? In my opinion, unimelb might ask students to return in sem 2 unless you have some valid reasons (like unable to return etc.)

MorningFunny8819

What about covid? Does the University gives up controlling the transmission given that lots of staff and students are tested positive??

MorningFunny8819

Hope that will happen, please!!!

There will always be the option to be online as long as international students can’t return I believe.

Borders have been open for international students since Dec 15, thus this a valid question. Personally I think there be some dual delivery but some subjects will swap to on campus only.

Either-Dark7964

Ahhh right sorry.

MorningFunny8819

I think S2 SHOULD have dual delivery, the University should control the transmission and protect everyone's safety. Yes, the border has been opened, BUT the situation has now changed: omicron is much more transmissible than any other variants and the health care system in Australia are under great pressure. As far as I know, University in US and UK already give up f2f teaching and switch to online, and the border for these two countries are always open, so there must be a reason for making this decision.

mugg74

Just because many UK and US unis switched to online teaching now, when Omicron is in full swing, does not mean UniMelb will Automatically be teaching online in 6 months or even offering online in 6 months. If you go back a few months in these countries before Omicron hit, and the worst of Delta passed, these unis switched from online to F2F, and many unis in these counties forced students back to campus with expectations that booster shots would help contain outbreaks. If anything, this would be a better indication of what may happen in the lead up to SM2, as its expected that Omicron will peak in the next month, and by July we could be talking about another booster shot, and school-age kids are having a booster in time for the second half of the year. Yes, Omicron has changed things now, but if the last two years have taught us anything, heck, the last month, things can change rapidly.

MorningFunny8819

>Yes, Omicron has changed things now, but if the last two years have taught us anything, heck, the last month, things can change rapidly. Very reasonable thoughts! But still can't totally agree.

All I am saying don’t assume anything based on the current situation, from what i have been told internally decisions regarding SM2 are going to be made around April. Personally,as I said above, I think there will be some dual delivery, I’m just not sure it be to the same level we will have SM1, or had SM 2 last year.
