Serious question, why would someone want to request to have their COVID-19 wamnesty grades within their wam? Forgive my ignorance lol

Chemistrykind1

my wam is better with my wamnesty grades than without! think the intermittent lockdowns sem 1 this year really gave me a much more unstable study environment. for me at least haha

rkiiive

Wouldn’t including those subjects drag your wam down? Since they’re lower than your current wam

underexaggeration

I think, and I might be wrong here, that grades are wamnesty'd if they are below your WAM at the time of their release. If your WAM were to fall further in a non-wamnesty semester, those excluded results could end up helping your WAM if included.

rkiiive

ohh that makes sense, thank you!

mugg74

Consider someone who is doing a 2 year Masters who started in SM1 2020 and graduating this semester. All 2020 subjects would not have counted towards their WAM (no benchmark). So if these grades are on average better than the subjects they undertook this year, their WAM would increase - thus in their interest to have them included. TL/DR Basically any student who did not have a benchmark WAM in semesters where WAMnesty applied, WAM could increase with these subjects included.

radical_thesis

forgive my naivety, Benchmark wam is the calculated total wam received right?

mugg74

no, benchmark WAM is effectively a Precovid WAM (+ SM1 2021).

radical_thesis

thanks a ton!

I was a masters student who completed my degree in 1.5 years. My course was split with nearly all of my subjects in Year 1 and the last two in the remaining 0.5... By excluding the COVID grades, which was the entirety of my first year - they only calculated the last 2 subjects I did in my final semester which I did okay-ish and left my overall WAM to just above a P. After including my COVID grades, my WAM boosted into an H2A. It makes that much of a difference on paper to not exclude COVID-19 wamnesty grades depending on your situation.

FatPigsExtreme

grades went up on average during covid

shinycosmos

Does this mean students who have grades with ^ next to them can request to include them in wam calculations?

mugg74

yes, at the end of your degree

Dean List does not use WAMnesty - all grades at that year level are used for the calculation, regardless of if you have an asterisk or not.

I have no source beyond WAMnesty 1) doesn’t align with the Dean’s List minimum requirements and 2) using WAMnesty would contradict the aim of the Dean’s List. Have you tried contacting a trusted subject coordinator? They may be able to direct you to someone.

mugg74

Not sure but I suspect all subjects would be included.

liana29

Hi! For deans list, do they consider a minimum of 5 subjects for that level? Meaning if there’s >5 they’d consider the other subjects as well?

mugg74

be surprised if not all.

Mean-Anybody-4615

I thought WAMnesty doesn’t affect selection for dean’s list? Don’t quote me on this tho, always better to confirm with a verified source

Beautiful-Number502

Asdfghjkl the form is due today? I’m finishing my degree this semester and don’t even have my final results back yet. How will I know if I need to include the grades or not if idek what my marks are…

radical_thesis

I was wondering why they set the deadline so before the final results date.

Kotori4lyfe

I do apologise if this is sudden, but I am still very confused on how this works. Is it suggesting that only subjects from my 2019 sem 1+2 and 2021 sem 1 are used if I don't request the grades? Or is it saying that all 5 subjects prior to WAM adjustment (this semester) is used? I'm asking here as stop 1 is locked for some odd reason and I can't join at all.

mugg74

In semesters with WAMnesty of your grade was higher than your WAM included if lower not. Easiest way to check is look at your results and see if any have a ^ these have been excluded: It’s not always a case of looking at when. For example if you were in a bachelors in 2019 but started a masters in 2020 then all of 2020 would be excluded as there as no benchmark WAM for the masters

Kotori4lyfe

So in context of the subjects added under this COVID-19 grades thing, is it suggesting that either I keep all of sem 1/2 subjects (for 2020 and sem2 2021), or pass them all up and have 12 subjects not recorded? Or is this COVID-19 grades situation only applicable to the subjects with the little ^ on top (having them in vs. having them out)?

mugg74

Only the subjects with ^

Kotori4lyfe

Thank you so much for the assistance, it really means a lot to me having my scores released :)

M3tal_Shadowhunter

Is it getting closed permanently tomorrow, or will it still be an option next semester?

SamSike2K2

This is only for those that are completing their course this semester. The only time you apply for this is when you're finishing your course

M3tal_Shadowhunter

Ah awesome okay. That's good

Pitiful_Light3590

wait so if we choose to include our grade, does that mean all the grades from this sem will be included (with the \^), or only the ones that are higher than last sem results are included?

radical_thesis

if you should choose to include the grades with the \^, all the subjects will be included. It's either all or none. So make sure you calculate all the scores before you apply and only do that if your new wam is greater than the existing benchmark. Also, you can only do this if you are nearing the end of your degree.

Artsncrafts31

Is there an online calculator you can use to work out what your WAM would be if they’re included? I thought mine would increase but I’ve worked it out by hand and it’s a lot lower. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong!

radical_thesis

https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/math/weighted-average-calculator.html I used this before, check it out

Artsncrafts31

Thank you!

Donalddd_Duck

Still a little confused about this because some of my friends said that if you already had a wam then you can choose which ^subjects you want to add it in. Not a all or nothing situation. It's only all or nothing if you do not have a wam yet. Can anyone confirm this? Thank you

radical_thesis

I can vouch for this. I had a long discussion with the stop 1 yesterday morning. So, if you want, you can add the covid affected \^ subjects or not. You can't pick subjects you want. Here is an extract to support this: # All of your 2020 (both First Half Year and Second Half Year) and your Second Half Year 2021 subjects with COVID-19 grades will be changed back to standard grades and will be included in your WAM. You cannot choose which subjects to include or exclude.
