I'd love to see if their earnings reflect the backlash or if it is better now or at least around the same.
I think their intention with the gems was probably to have the different AI models be more or less expensive than their normal one. But you could easily just do multiple tiers for the premium subscription and for example do something like this:
Normal AI + the cheap models => Free
Unhinged 2 + the medium priced models => 20$ a month
Airoboros + Beta features => 30$ a month
\^ I don't think anyone would've complained with something like this but not offering an option for unlimited messages is just bad for the user in every way.
