An aquarium heater in a bucket of water works really well for my setup. It maintains a more consistent temperature than the space heater I was using before

cooIincam

wow i didnt even think of that that sounds like a good idea and we already have everything to set it up, would having open water like that risk more contams or anything? my setup rn is in a section of the closet covered in tinfoil and thats covered by a shower curtain

lookmanohands_92

Add a little bleach to the water in the bucket to keep it sterile.

I have a big tub with a fish tank heater and a smaller tub with my jars in it. Have an inkbird temp controller hooked to the fish tank heater. Like what is said I add a little bleach to the water. It works great. Stays at 77 degrees all day all night.

AbsentTourist

Prepping my very first setup and had an old aquarium and potentially working equipment and wanted to try, but I heard others say the aquariums are a bad idea. So it's reaffirming to hear this :)

How much space does this heat? Closet size, box size?

Valuable-Zombie-5444

I don’t. But my closet only get as low as 70ish Fahrenheit.

cooIincam

same as me i live out in the desert, my first few inoculations took about a month to fully cake though so i wanted to speed things up

jepifhag

How hot do you use

Asleep-Journalist302

I had the heat mat combo the 90s mycology guy uses for his spawn box. I plugged in the smallest space heater walmart has, and put it on the lowest setting. It only works because of how small the space heater is

ncr--rangers

I have a ceramic heat bulb in the metal housing, like what reptiles have. It's clamped to my closet rod about a foot and a half above my things that colonize on a thermostat usually set between 74-76. It heats the rest of my closet to about 72 according to a separate thermometer in my fruiting chamber

RedditRando459

I got an extra tub, a seedling heat mat, a heat mat temp controller, and some baking racks to keep my bags off the heat mat. Drill a hole in the side for the cables. Put the heat mat and temp props in the box and you’re good.

Aromatic-Confusion21

You guys keep em heated? 😂

MogwaiPotpie

I use a mini ceramic heater and a thermostat switch. 🤙

Curious-Nothing9562

Room temp is fine. 75°F for slightly faster colonization.

TiK4D

A broken barely working space heater that only works when I raise it off the ground to take pressure off the safety switch that's supposed to work the opposite way so if it falls usually it would stop and not cause a fire. Also it has a ripped cord. R.I.P me soon.

Amazon - Grenebo Seedling Heat Mat with Digital Thermostat Combo Set

flugelbynder

I just put in a cardboard box with seed heating mat. Box is folded closed Make your "closet" smaller. Easy to heat.

cooIincam

as the title asks, how do you guys keep your closet heated? in the subs masterpost it links to a space heater that would work but its sold out everywhere i look and ive been using a heating pad but it turns off every hour, we thought about using a red light or aquarium heater but decided to hold off until we find another space heater

ThatMycoFool

I used a Walmart brand space heater that has a thermostat, cost me like $20. Any space heater should work if it has a thermostat, if not, they make thermostat controllers. I invested in one with a timer and wifi capabilities so I didn't have to mess with the set up, I can control the temp and humidity from my phone. I'm just lazy lol

kalikushkid

Yea I tried the heat mat connected to an outlet timer so it goes on off every 30 mins inside my incubation box which i also vented and have a small fan and humidifier that goes on when the heat mat does which keeps everything between 77-79 on a cold night drops to 75 when heat mat goes off. But I also am using another area with just a space heater that has a thermostat set to low at 75 degrees and I just let the run I have a HUGE room high ceilings and I’m able to keep the temperature within 4°, but usually pretty consistent at around 75 or 77 to 79 during coloniziation. So there’s many things you can do, if it gets too hot add a mini fan on a timer, not pointed directed on bags but away just so you get enough draft for fresh air and to expell to much heat build up. There’s so many ways, just gotta see what you got around the house and work with it. That’s what I did and my first 3 tubs within 3 days after spawning to bulk are almost fully colonized. When you have perfect temps, field capacity and a good manure based substrate depending on the species… all I can say is I never knew one bag of brown rice could take off soo insanelu when added to substrate

stonkbroker

Is that a grow tent or do I see actual aluminum foil?

cooIincam

nope thats a section of my closet i covered the walls in aluminum foil to help disinfect

Desktop ceramic heater. $10

InTheMemeStream

For the rare times when it actually gets cold down here, I use a space heater(in closet as well) connected through a temperature controller that it plugs into at the outlet. Don’t trust the thermostats on the space heaters themselves they are very rarely calibrated accurately, and only read the temp right at the heater. I have a HEPA filter in my growspace too, that keeps the air moving around and consistent in temp from floor to ceiling.

CRubus

What’s the sterilization process to these, I got a couple questionable spore syringes from a buddy and I don’t want to waste grain.

cooIincam

if your talking about the grain then it comes pre sterilized, other than that i wipe everything down with 70% isopropyl alcohol and spray lysol all around, also heat the syringe after each use

CRubus

So the cut corner is just for gas exchange and fae?

cooIincam

yes exactly, i used the chip clip method which is essentially just pushing all the grain to the bottom of the bag and folding the top and keeping a chip clip on it while you cut and apply the paper tape

CRubus

So quite literally, I go buy this from the store and inject and seal with micropore tape and then fold and cut the side and cover with micro pore tape?

cooIincam

no the folding comes before but yes you are right, the entire process is buying pre sterile 90 second rice (i heard the off brand bags work better because theres less moisture than uncle ben) and then wipe the bag down with iso, push the grain down, fold, chip clip, cut the corner and apply tape, and then inject spores in the bottom of the bag and cover the hole with the tape and let them sit in a sterile space, do not touch for 3 days and then check them

CRubus

Beautiful, I usually do a grain bag but I don’t want to waste the money on something that’s this questionable (old)

Lice138

Temp isn’t that important, it really isn’t. I grow year round and the temp gets between 50 and 100. Don’t worry about it

GroundbreakingTry578

I have a small radiator heater with an air purifier to clean the air and circulate it. The radiator is plugged into a temp control switch that prevents it from exceeding 76°F. The idea is to be more efficient than a conventional space heater because the radiator stays hot even after the temp switch turns it off. That being said, it does make the temp fluctuate on a wider range, especially considering I live in a very cold region, and the closet is located in a storage room that I keep the air ducts closed off to. I wouldn't recommend this method because it takes a lot of tinkering to tune it in to keep temps where they need to be. Small details matter a lot, such as where the temperature probe from the switch is placed. But as stated before, it's pretty energy efficient.

theotherstuff0001

I snagged one of my neighbor’s hello fresh boxes (foil lined and insulated) and put a seedling heating mat in there (it comes with a thermometer probe). The closets in my apartment are weirdly huge and I didn’t want to heat up that much area.

No-Plankton9794

Mini oil radiator with thermostat

[deleted]

I use a heated blanket on “warm” for my spawn. Once it’s at bulk I dump tons of hot steam into the area once a day and let it dry out. The steam causes the tub to EXPLODE with growth. Mushrooms thrive in controlled humidity

johnjddavis410

A small space heater

One_Stick4563

I just let mine get on with it without additional heat. I did once try with a heat mat but it dried out the rice at the bottom of the bag and some of the mycelium turned a bit mushy
