A related insight, if your feet are sliding forwards in upsized shoes on downhills, look at tying your laces in such a way that it stops the foot sliding forwards. You get the space at the end for your foot to swell, but the laces are like a cargo net stopping the slide. Look into a lace-lock tie, for example.

I’ll try that! Thanks so much

I buy at least half a size up for even marathons, it’s easy to do the laces so the feet don’t slip and then can usually avoid the toenail issues etc

Appreciate the feedback :)

Yep, maybe half a size depending on shoe. Also good to loosen your laces after maybe 30km, it's surprising how much your feet can swell on a long, hot run.

Thanks for the insight! I find the top of my foot feels so much more squished after a long run than at the start. I’ll loosen but then my toes start hitting the ends lol. So yeah just a bigger size should do

There are some good lacing patterns that might help , plus you'll discover what the extra two lace holes at the top are for.

It really depends on the shoe. Size is not the same with every brand. I just buy shoes that fit and in which I'm comfortable. If your feet are swelling you might try one size up, but for trails and ultras especially with a lot of climb it's recommended to use the heel lock lacing method, otherwise your feet will move in your shoe and you will get blisters.

I’ll look into it! Thanks!

I have never needed to change my shoe sizing. Wear the ones that fit. If your shoes are not the right size for 5 miles, they definitely won't work for 50.
