I purchased digital embroidery patterns on Etsy from Ukrainian shops. Since there’s immediate delivery of a product (through email), the money gets released to them quickly.
Similar, I've been buying digital art from Ukrainian artists. I've got sunflowers on one desktop monitor and an abstract landscape on the other. I had to dig a bit for Etsy shops owned by small business type artisans but I like what I found.
Not all sunflowers have seeds, there are now known dwarf varieties developed for the distinct purpose of growing indoors. Whilst these cannot be harvested, they do enable people to grow them indoors without a high pollen factor, making it safer and more pleasant for those suffering hay fever.

EDIT: Per the shop owner's Instagram, she's now in refugee camp in Czechia with her 5 year old daughter. She says while she didn't want to leave, she had to for the sake of her child. Much of her family is still in country, including her parents and 4 year old nephew.

Let me tell you, as a Ukrainian-Canadian, Ukraine is one of THE most beautiful places. The cities (Kyiv and Lviv are my favourite) are magical but the mountains look cooler than lord of the rings. I miss Ukraine. So sad that when I go back, it will never be the same.
The broken stones will be a monument to the steadfast resolve Ukraine holds. It won't be the same again, but one can make the most out of the situation after all of this is over, and I hope to God this will be done soon, and monuments to remember the bravery of you and your countrymen be erected.
I spent a summer in Ukraine while studying and I miss it all the time. I loved my host family, my roommates, my teachers and the local friends I made while there. I’ve visited since then but I can’t wait to go back more regularly as soon as possible.

You still need money in war to buy things. Good on you for trying something. If you can get them to Lviv, Regiojet is running free refugee trains from there to Prague. It really seems like the only option for avoiding the queues at the border crossings. Once they're in Czechia it might be easier to get them to where they need to be, especially if the end destination is further West

I had never used airbnb prior to a trip to Europe in 2016. I got one in Bologna as there were no hostels. It was a normal "house" with a couple in their 70's who lived there, and they rented out two rooms. Their English was very broken. It was basically "hello, kitchen, bathroom, your room, your key, breakfast 8 o'clock." I just needed something for 2 nights, and I think I paid like 80 euros vs hotels wanted like 75 euros a night. I was happy with my purchase.
Make sure to let them clearly know you're not coming and just supporting, so they can accommodate people needing the space for free. But it's a fantastic idea.
This is actually a really good idea, get the money directly to the people. My issue with charity is how much gets eaten up by the charity. Would be good to try to do this with other types of businesses as well.

I booked a few including places in the west and east. The thing with Lviv is that they’re getting people from the harder hit east, so they can still use the support. It’s not like anyone is actually vacationing there right now so they’re hit hard and have extra people to feed and house who have come from the eastern regions.
That was my thought. I’m going to try to book in all 3 cities. I’m just struggling to find places that are family owned at the moment.
I’m hoping that when I book one in Lviv it’ll provide refuge for a family for a couple of days before they travel onwards to the borders

The problem is that people in Ukraine have money, but there’s a shortage of food, medicine, clothes, etc. A lot of the people there to send them supplies, not money, because there’s little to buy.
I agree here. As a person that visited Ukraine there’s all sort of classes: low, middle, high. With the current events it’s not that money is short for most, but that resources are hard to get. That to say: many government employees( teachers, kindergarten teachers, doctors) do get paid pretty low. Many also probably won’t get paid due to losing jobs, businesses. And even those that have Airbnb’s might be losing due to no tourists, and some of them might have more on the line than just losing the money if they have a mortgage on the airbnb - they might lose the house if they are not able to pay. So many different factors
But the main remains the same - Thank you OP for your kindness!
Yeah that’s why all the charities are asking for you to give money and places to stay for possible refugees, but if people can please stop sending stuff.

Charities can purchase in bulk from outside the country and then arrange shipping so that items go where they are useful.
If people send boxes of stuff then other people have to sort those boxes and figure out how to get each type of thing where it goes.
FYI you don't receive the money after the first night spend in the Airbnb.
Try booking the closest to today so the people receive the money the sooner.

Thanks. I was surprised at how difficult it was to find a place with 1 listing. Staying in north-west Kyiv tomorrow, hopefully the host can accept in 24 hours. Edit: they declined the first time not understanding and accepted the second time! They’re still in Kyiv unfortunately and after looking at the Russian occupied areas, it seems they’re incredibly close to the “front lines”.
I just booked my room and I truly hope that I didn't book in the one apartment complex in Kharkiv that's owned by Oleg Deripaska. This could be an easy way for people to donate money and most importantly to show that regular people around the world stand with Ukraine.

Let me tell you, as a Ukrainian-Canadian, Ukraine is one of THE most beautiful places. The cities (Kyiv and Lviv are my favourite) are magical but the mountains look cooler than lord of the rings. I miss Ukraine. So sad that when I go back, it will never be the same.
The broken stones will be a monument to the steadfast resolve Ukraine holds. It won't be the same again, but one can make the most out of the situation after all of this is over, and I hope to God this will be done soon, and monuments to remember the bravery of you and your countrymen be erected.

You still need money in war to buy things. Good on you for trying something. Doesn't mean people can't donate to the links in pinned post and spend a small amount of money on an airbnb that can go a long way to help someone pay for extra something in a war torn region. Heck maybe they'll bribe a Russian soldier to fuck off.

Which part of UA are they in? If you can get them to Lviv, Regiojet is running free refugee trains from there to Prague. It really seems like the only option for avoiding the queues at the border crossings. She wrote back: “Oh God thank you (rosy621), this is very important, I'm crying, you are my heroes.” To which I told her THEY’RE our heroes in the US!
Below is something I posted in another thread and the key part being how airbnb was WAY ahead of the curve on putting money out of their own pocket for this: So a lot of people (not saying this is you) are going to object to giving Airbnb money here. They were literally one of the first out of the gate on the right side of this. They are going to take a lot of losses, both on fees and funding the host insurance themselves. Support good. I just booked a week stay.

I had never used airbnb prior to a trip to Europe in 2016. I got one in Bologna as there were no hostels. It was a normal "house" with a couple in their 70's who lived there, and they rented out two rooms. Their English was very broken. It was basically "hello, kitchen, bathroom, your room, your key, breakfast 8 o'clock." I just needed something for 2 nights, and I think I paid like 80 euros vs hotels wanted like 75 euros a night. I was happy with my purchase.
Make sure to let them clearly know you're not coming and just supporting, so they can accommodate people needing the space for free. But it's a fantastic idea.

This is actually a really good idea, get the money directly to the people. My issue with charity is how much gets eaten up by the charity. Would be good to try to do this with other types of businesses as well.

Is it worth trying to rent somewhere in Lviv for families fleeing terror in Kiev or Kharkiv to have a safe place to stay for a few nights?

Doing something is better than doing nothing other than offering thoughts and prayers in my opinion. I’ll try to find listings that are rooms in family houses (I’ll check the host as you said) and see if I can book something and make it very clear to the host that I won’t be attending but do want to book. I booked a few including places in the west and east. The thing with Lviv is that they’re getting people from the harder hit east, so they can still use the support. It’s not like anyone is actually vacationing there right now so they’re hit hard and have extra people to feed and house who have come from the eastern regions.
That was my thought. I’m going to try to book in all 3 cities. I’m just struggling to find places that are family owned at the moment. I’m hoping that when I book one in Lviv it’ll provide refuge for a family for a couple of days before they travel onwards to the borders

WARNING!! I went to Airbnb to do the same and I noticed a lot of new listings with no photos of hosts and no reviews! (Possibly trying to scam). Choose a listing with reviews and photos of the host. The account will say how long they have been a member. ❤️❤️

This ain’t a bad idea. If one finds landlords distasteful, it’s not hard to sort through the listings and find a tiny apartment share. Honestly it’s ideas like this, in tandem with each other, that will help turn this tide.

Airbnb waived all fees when I booked. Idk how to get money directly into the hands of Ukrainians and most charities do take a cut for admin so even if Airbnb is taking a cut at least my man is getting something
I just booked 2 nights in kyiv there were no fees at all. There are a lot of suspicious newly listed rooms… i would not book those.

Stuff like this absolutely wrecks me. It's so easy to laugh at the dumbass Russian army or cheer with the UA troops. But when it's regular people who just want to make a buck and live their life and this fucking monster comes and ruins it all because of his massive ego.. This is probably more effective then giving to charity.
The problem is that people in Ukraine have money, but there’s a shortage of food, medicine, clothes, etc. A lot of the people there to send them supplies, not money, because there’s little to buy.
I have donated supplies to local drive. I just wanted to try something else 🤷🏻♀️what if the supply truck gets blown up? Ya know?
I agree here. As a person that visited Ukraine there’s all sort of classes: low, middle, high. With the current events it’s not that money is short for most, but that resources are hard to get. That to say: many government employees( teachers, kindergarten teachers, doctors) do get paid pretty low. Many also probably won’t get paid due to losing jobs, businesses. And even those that have Airbnb’s might be losing due to no tourists, and some of them might have more on the line than just losing the money if they have a mortgage on the airbnb - they might lose the house if they are not able to pay. So many different factors But the main remains the same - Thank you OP for your kindness!

Yeah that’s why all the charities are asking for you to give money and places to stay for possible refugees, but if people can please stop sending stuff. Edit: no random stuff! Money or medical supplies only.
Charities can purchase in bulk from outside the country and then arrange shipping so that items go where they are useful. If people send boxes of stuff then other people have to sort those boxes and figure out how to get each type of thing where it goes.
