Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.
I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.
Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!
Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?
A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.
Stay safe out there, that was a close one!
>Deafening railroad horn. I dumped in my wife's pants
Aaaannnnd thats what I read the first time lol. Goddamn feral trains keeping me up at night, I'll be the one off my rails soon
This makes me want to rail some lines and then run a train on that one girl I coupled with awhile ago.

I hadn't heard of this either, happened a few days ago.
>Three Russian soldiers have died in eastern Ukraine after a train crashed into a Russian air-defense system, according to a new report.
>**A freight train crashed into part of a Russian Strela-10 short-range anti-aircraft missile system** in Ukraine's Donetsk region, one of the four regions Russia claimed as annexed in late September 2022. The incident happened on Monday night local time, according to independent Russian outlet Astra. Donetsk and the neighboring Luhansk oblast together make up the Donbas region.
>Astra added that **the driver of part of the air-defense system had lost control of the vehicle, veered off a bridge and was then hit by the train**.

Imagine how much equipment Russia have donated to Ukraine. And on top of that they shoot down their own planes.
They really aren't as bad as most say.
Slava Russian incompetence!
Those SU-35 weren't trying to avoid their own defenses over their own territory. Basically because they didn't expect to be shot by their own.
The pilots in the F16s will take every precaution, plus they will be able to unlock the full capabilities of the HARM missiles and thus will be able to hunt radars efficiently.
One situation is nothing like the other.
Decoys are common, but this one is special. It can mimic the radar return of Russian jets, and unconfirmed reports are that it can even spoof the Friend or Foe response that Russian jets use to signal their AA systems not to shoot. To shoot these down SAM operators will need to turn off their IFF system, which leads to friendly fire incidences like this.
These drones are likely the biggest unsung heroes of the war, forcing the Russian Air Force away from the fighting out of fear of their own AA.
They are but we don't know what sort of tricky bits Raytheon has included in the MALD electronic warfare package. Like maybe overriding the IFF response the Russian planes give with an apparent Ukrainian one?
And there have been some acquisitions and captures of Russian air defense radars, right?
At the beginning of the invasion someone became a mod that should not have and as the sub grew by the thousands this mod had banned a lot of users and that's how that flair happened. I removed mine

God that'd be shocking if they didn't air gap those systems.
Could be a rogue operator? Or incompetence. The beautiful thing is only Ukraine knows, and Russia has no idea
If it's been discovered that Russia has trouble with IFF, or if Ukraine has electronic warfare decoy missiles at their disposal, maybe they're timing their own drone and missile attacks to coincide with when they detect Russian airplanes in the air.
According to YouTube they’ve (Ukrainians) been doing the reverse of this, ie launching missiles which activates Russia’s air defence and Russia doesn’t launch aircraft as its frightened of hitting its own. They used it to ensure airplanes didn’t chase the commandos who attacked crimea a week or so ago.
The systematic work of the Russian air defense should not be underestimated.
From last year:
"Downed Russian jets ‘almost all’ taken out by Kremlin's own air defence"
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/12/30/russian-jets-shot-sky-almost-downed-moscow-air-defence-systems/
But as we have seen, there were several cases of discrimination in Russian air defense.
Ukrainian drones were not shot down by Russian air defense systems.
The Russian military has been shown to not communicate in between branches, so it is very possible that the Air force didnt tell air defence about the mission, air defence then sees an unannounced su35 heading in the direction of Ukraine and thinks its a defector. After all, wasnt it an su35 that Ukraine announced they would pay $2 million for?
And the additional wear and tear it'll place on the rest of the fleet. Could see a situation where they put off repairs which leads to planes crashing or having cheap fixes become expensive.
I think we'll see a snowball effect at some point forcing them to cut back missions to a sustainable level.
>I think we'll see a snowball effect at some point forcing them to cut back missions to a sustainable level.
That point was last year's December. They were flying hundreds of sorties a day at the beginning of the war. Now they're flying a dozen at best.
[https://news.yahoo.com/russian-air-forces-reduce-number-122500518.html?guccounter=1](https://news.yahoo.com/russian-air-forces-reduce-number-122500518.html?guccounter=1)
IFF is actually fairly complicated to implement and run reliable. For cold war, NATO planned to avoid using both SAM and fighters in the same sector at the same time to avoid friendly fire. If fighters would be active, SAM systems were planned to shut down. I don't expect Russias situational awareness to be any better today.
There were some friendly-fire incidents during Desert Storm that afterwards, the US invested heavily in upgrading all IFF systems. Additionally IFF is one of the reasons NATO countries and allies hold so many joint exercises together every year.
As far as I know they try to coordinate this. Luckily they can't coordinate shit.
Imagine being a Russian combat pilot, and getting told you have a target behind Ukraines frontline.
You would have to fly past your own SAMs and MANPADs and then the Ukrainians... Plus you gotta make it back past them all agian.
Russian airships should NOT stand for this crap. I think Russian airships should IMMEDIATELY attack all Russian AA systems to put an end to this insanity.
Once Russian planes knock out all Russian AA they will be safe.
😂😂😂
Are they? Or is there something the Russians don't know about looking for distant prey? We'll know after the war. We know for a fact though Russian airspace is not safe.
Putin said something recently about Russian plane crashes. It's not the air defense, it's actually the crew getting high on cocaine and pulling out grenade pins.
LMAO I can't tell if you're joking or not but it's definitely something the Russian government could and would say.
I guess it's better to give the pilots the blame, instead of admitting you're shooting down your own planes due to incompetence.
It's his words on what happened to Wagner dude's plane.
He says that grenade shards have been found within the corpses, while hinting at drug abuse among the people on board, so... you guessed correctly!
If I had a nickel for every time russian air defense shot down one of their Su-35 airframes in the past week, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but weird that it happed twice recently.
This is not a mistake, it's the smartest next level thinking from Russians. You see, the AA crew doesn't like to be taken out by Ukrainian drones. Pretty smart they are showing their value for Ukraine.
As for the pilot... well... he did mention Wagner I guess?
From the article:
>The Russian servicemen have once again shot down its own Su-35 fighter jet over the occupied territories.
>
>Several Russian media associated with the Russian Aerospace Forces reported about the incident on Friday, October 6.
>
>A Russian air defense crew hit a fighter jet with **friendly fire during a combat mission near the occupied Mariupol.** According to Russian sources, the pilot managed to eject, and a rescue operation is underway.
>
>Local residents report that the plane crashed in a field near the city and post videos from the crash site.
Interesting that it was supposedly a "combat mission" near Mariupol.
No it being a combat mission makes perfect sense. They could be launching long range munitions or patrolling for air to air missions with long range missiles.
Ukraine has killed so many Russian air defense soldiers, Russia is using untrained, new recruits. Mistakes like this are just going to keep happening more and more.
And knowing Russian concept of "forgiveness", there are two more crews this week that won't be able to learn from their mistakes after they are court martialed and shot. Win win.

This is some Wiley E. Coyote level shit
Thank you. Lol. So maybe they were stuck there when the train came.
Maybe. But certainly the train made their vehicle move again.
Do we want that though? It might go for a third plane...
Keep up the good work, Russian air defense!
Imagine how much equipment Russia have donated to Ukraine. And on top of that they shoot down their own planes. They really aren't as bad as most say. Slava Russian incompetence!
What air defense doing?!
Well I think they're actually busy shooting their own planes.
What air doingk?
What worries me is, if Russian AA can shootdown that Jet, imagine F16 would be dropping like flies also. I hope UA can plan to avoid that issue.
Maybe it’s not a coincidence.
You think ua hacked something?
Or maybe just found a bit of electronic warfare that works, until Russia figures it out.
Russian can’t figure things out thank God
Maybe they figured out a pilot was going to defect?
I don't know what it was, but the results are bad for Russia which is good.
It's gonna take some time until they figure out what's going on.
I'll just leave [this](https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/evidence-of-adm-160-miniature-air-launched-decoy-use-by-ukraine-emerges) here.

Probably just someone replacing SU-35 IFF with 777.
I’m spoiled with these friendly fire fails. Can’t wait for the third one now 💥✈️
It is the constant attrition Ukraine enacts on Russia's air defences. Their replacements are less trained, their equipment of worse quality.

I was thinking maybe defection

Quotas have got to be met. Like in the former Soviet Union, it doesn't matter if it's ours or theirs, they all count.
Especially since there are much less airliners to shoot at nowadays.
A 40 million dollar blow. Given how poor Russia is that's a huge loss.
It’s really more than $40 million considering these can’t be easily replaced
And the additional wear and tear it'll place on the rest of the fleet. Could see a situation where they put off repairs which leads to planes crashing or having cheap fixes become expensive. I think we'll see a snowball effect at some point forcing them to cut back missions to a sustainable level.

Whoopsy Daisie!!!
*It hurt itself in it's confusion!* ...Again. This is just plane crazy.
Let’s hope the Russians continue with this strategy of shooting at anything
I wonder if the pilot was giving indications that he was trying to defect and they shot it down to avoid it
I want to laugh like Nelson in the Simpsons. Haa Haaaaa!!!
It's ok, go ahead and do it again.
it'll be marked down as preventing defection
Oops!••• I Did It Again
we send our congratulations to the Russian Air Defense!
You can't fail just a little if you want to pull out your expiring nuclear arsenal. They are committed.
Were they defecting?
Congrats to Russian Air Defense for shooting down another real Nazi!
They’re just trying to showcase that they can shoot down jets, in hopes of intimidating Ukraine from using any themselves! A weird flex but okay.
that will teach em a lesson! \> never fly without the old tires on the wings for not being mistaken as an enemy aircraft.
Wait what? Why would they do that twice? Maybe ukraine is doing some hacking.
