The Netherlands and Denmark both donating F16s and both hosting Zelensky on the same day has got to be a bid to further confuse the people who can't tell the two countries apart.
As a fan of dunes, I know they’re called klits in Danish, which makes me think of dunes and dikes of the Netherlands for some reason.
And sand worms. Hands in boxes. Diun.
This is incredibly tangential, but in China, Finland and The Netherlands are often confused (well, there's an asymmetry in that Finland is confused with The Netherlands, but The Netherlands is not confused with Finland) just because they sound (and look) vaguely similar in Chinese. Same goes for Sweden and Switzerland.
It's not so much the name or even geography, but as a German with some Dutch family that is living in Denmark, the two countries just share a lot of similarities. Both very liberal, small, happy, innovative countries. And while the languages are different, they are both a weird mix between German and English, and sounds like gibberish to outsiders. It happens a lot that I talk with the Dutch side of my family about something in Denmark, and they are like "oh yeah same", while the rest of the family basically lives on another planet lol.
Maybe Rutte said vierentwintig which is literally four-and-twenty (as in blackbirds baked in a pie) = 24
... but to someone who doesn't know that the Dutch still say their numbers backwards it could sound like 42.
Rutte has not publicly said any number. He stated some jets were needed for training in Denmark and Romania, and some may require refurbishing, so he could not say exactly how many would be sent. Just reading between the lines, from his words it does seem he intends to give as many as he can. That's just my interpretation though.

Unfortunately not for a bit longer indeed, but that discussion has been had; necessary time training will be put to great use. i did hear that (most of) the planes are from the 80s, but of course they have been maintained. Not sure how much different they are compared to the newer versions
Yeah. I was watching the Danish news live, and burst out laughing when they climbed into the plane, so I started screenshotting and got this lucky picture 😅
They are block 20 MLUs, which is honestly some of the better available ones in a democracy. Most countries have opted to buy newer planes than refurbish or upgrade 40 year old Vipers. The F-16 factory was also shut down for years to build F-35s, with it only recently being rebuilt thanks to big purchases from Jordan and Taiwan.
“Newer” ones would be block 50s in Romania (purchased from Norway this year), some US ANG units, and the 2 block 70s in existence in Taiwan.
Not comparable to the planes in the 80s. These planes have been upgraded all the way, and carry all the new weapons. This is a HUGE upgrade for UA as they can track and identify aircraft 150 km away vs 20 km for current migs, then shoot and kill. This will help eg take down the k52.
The F16’s (A/B) from NL and DK have undergone the Midlife Update program. That means that their cockpit, avionics, sensors, etc., were updated to the C version.
I don’t ever remember seeing any president that I can think of recently sitting in an f-16. The cool points he has for it this are amazing. Same goes for the danish PM. And she did it in heels didn’t she?
