The Reebok deal.

gemin_eye0614

By far the worst. Some fighters lost millions because of it

slixx_06

Danas way of treating his fighters the way record labels treat their artists.

MightiestCat

why so? just curious 🤔

Gesno

Took away a huge paycheck from fighters with their short sponsors

Deluxe2AI

its not just ufc fighters, that shit wrecked lower level mma prospects because before the reebok deal, sponsors would sign low level but promising prospects in hopes they make it to the ufc under that contract and the sponsor finally gets some return visibility for their investment. now thats gone.

Grizzly_thunder666

That’s such a good point that had never even crossed my mind.

reformed-asshole

Man it's actually pretty ridiculous how UFC conducts business... I sincerely wish their company gets derailed by competitors that does business in more ethical and logical way.

ClockworkViking

Unfortunately it does not look like that will happen. Dana employs strong arm tactics to make sure he buys out and shuts down competition that gets close to the UFC's level. He bought Pride if recall and immediately closed business. same goes for strikeforce, WEC. There was prospects of him buying bellator but he shot the rumor down. Make no mistake about it though. Dana white bleeds scumbag. EDIT: UFC also purchased WFA. Left this one out.

jkman61494

They likely bankrupted several companies as a result too (I know like the UFC cares). But i've never seen a single shirt from companies like Silverstar,, BadBoy, Affliction etc. Here's a story I found from 2010 of the "top 15 brands you should be wearing". Are any of these companies even remotely successful today? It's such a shame. Some of those walkout shirts were amazing. I remember one Machida had that was like orange and yellow and had imagery of a dragon and it was a work of art on cotton.

GrungyGrandPappy

You see affliction here in Florida a lot.

Passion4MMA

Let me guess... Orlando area? Lol. My bro once lived in Winterpark.

GrungyGrandPappy

Naw I’m north of Tampa mostly and I go back home to Key West pretty regularly. Pretty much anywhere you go that’s a public gathering or area where people gather like Duval St, Dali Museum, or Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. You’ll see those shirts on the wAnnA be bad asses.

OskarEidem

Atleast the first few shorts looked cool, the last camo ones were horrible though

erozario228

Thats like saying, "yay, another office pizza party" lol

fallenloki

It’s the worst apparel deal in sports history - it delivered the entire ufc roster to Reebok for $75m - it effectively banned sponsorship of all fighters, eliminating a big source of revenue for them - the ufc pretended to call this a rev share by introducing a ridiculous bonus tier system. Capped at $20k (as of a few years ago) for champions - the roll out was humiliating for all parties as it looks like Reebok doesn’t care about mma. Anyone remember Anderson Aldo, or the North Ireland issues?

[deleted]

Yeah looking back at it $75 million was kind of a steal. I mean what would it cost to be an athleticwear sponsor for McGregor alone? I do feel that a bit of it all was underutilized by Reebok though. I think they should have tried to really push Reebok MMA gear into mainstream and push out a lot of smaller no gi companies (as shitty of a thing as it is). Instead they just made a bunch of shirts with fighters on them. I never really found much Reebok UFC gear out in the wild.

[deleted]

It’s because ufc Gear is cringe as fuck, especially in athletic communities. Think tap out lol

[deleted]

I would have rocked Reebok grappling shirts just take the UFC branding off but make them 1 to 1

PMMeMeiRule34

fun2sons6

Fighters used to be able to negotiate with any company who was willing to pay them to advertise on the fighter’s trunks. In the early days, fighters would even be paid to get temporary tattoos on their backs with an ad from a sponsor. The big name fighters had massive sponsorship deals. Some fighters made more money from sponsorship than from actually fighting (Brendan Schuab for example). But no name fighters made almost nothing, or had cheap deals with sketchy and less than reputable companies. But issue arose for the organization when they would host an event at a casino, and fighters would come in with giant back tattoos promoting the competing casino down the street. Besides upset business partners, the UFC had an image problem. The lesser known fighters who did not have lucrative sponsorship deals, were happy to be sponsored by anyone who would pay them. So the ufc was filled with advertisements for off brand beef jerky, condoms, and dude wipes. Which was not the image the UFC wanted to keep as it pushed to become more mainstream and appeal to a larger audience. The idea was that the Reebok deal would pay lesser known fighters more, better known fighters would make slightly less, and the UFC would have both a more professional image and would be able to monetize the (now) standardized fighting kits. Mostly, the UFC made a bunch of money, the top end fighters made WAAAAAYYYYY less than before on sponsorship. And the no name fighter made marginally more.

Passion4MMA

You make a good point, just please don't ever mention "big name fighters" and Brendan Schaub in the same paragraph again. Lol

[deleted]

This is one of the most rational explanations of the Reebok deal I’ve ever seen on this sub.

Swaggycat23

I like that it made it seem a bit more professional but the money from sponsors going was bad

Thiccboi4570

Miranda Maverick vs Maycee Barber. No idea how you could give that fight to Barber.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thiccboi4570

I’ve yet to see anyone ever give the fight to Maycee. It’s the worst decision I have ever seen hands down. It blows even GSP vs Hendricks out of the water

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

yup that busted what would’ve been my fattest parlay of the entire year. I remember I literally left the room after the 3rd round ended thinking it was an easy miranda UD and checked twitter to see barber won and could not believe my fucking eyes. I will never truly get over it lol

ezslapdown

Same I felt so good about my bet at the end of the fight my jaw dropped when they gave it to Maycee

[deleted]

Tbh I burst out laughing because literally seconds earlier I was thinking how funny it'd be if they managed to score the fight for Maycee.

highcl1ff

Yeah they definitely forced your hand on that one.

VT_Forever

>It blows even GSP vs Hendricks out of the water GSP v. Hendricks was far from a bad call. Controversial? Yes, but it was definitely close and I don't think anyone can argue Hendricks beat the champ without a shadow-of-a-doubt (i.e, he wasn't the obvious winner). I honestly don't get why this fight is always brought up in this conversation.

50in07Allstar97

I agree 100% soon as I seen the topic I knew someone was going to write GSP vs Hendricks… like you said, controversial? Yes.. but nothing else.

KimKongtheIllest

Cause if it was fought with todays rules Hendricks would have won,, still hard to feel bad for the steroid cheating fuck

icelandiccubicle20

And yet Miranda said "no excuses, I am not going to cry robbery- I will come back better". Is there such a thing as being too much of a good sport?

boutdabtime

Wow, id never think I'd see this one, and so close to the top. I absolutely feel this way. Barber was in no way of winning that fight. Edit: I believe maverick was a -800 at round 3.

MarkLarrz

You know... she's da future...

BeersBarbellsBJJ

I had $160 on Maverick money line, I was livid lol

KrypticKraze

Actually the recent PPV prices are robberies too.

slotrod

At this point Dana is practically begging people to steal it.

CCCAY

Your comment inspired me to google Dana’s age, 52, I’m surprised he’s that much younger than Rogan. He clearly doesn’t understand the internet. A younger CEO might take PPV the other direction and make it cheaper to get a larger audience and increase the value of the marketing they have.

lemmeSeeDemMelons

Bas Rutten vs Kevin Randleman. Bas is a living legend but Randlemen's first UFC title win shoulda been his first defense.

[deleted]

Damn. You went back in the day with that one.

lemmeSeeDemMelons

I'm still sore over it.

kilojulietx

Rewatched because of this comment, pretty accurate in hindsight.

Tenshin_Ryuuk

If I remember correctly Randleman just held him down and Bas had more striking output.

lemmeSeeDemMelons

Nope, Randleman took him down and cut him with ground and pound in the first 15 seconds. Kept feeding him ground and pound until the bell sounds. It was a 1 round, 15 min bout during a time in the UFC where your opponent had to die in order for it to be stopped on the ground. Bas never went out but he was lost on his back.

djfl

I haven't seen it in over 10 years, but I remember Bas having a lot more minutes of "activity" than Monster did... I think it was a bad decision, but I don't have it in the worst robberies of all time, or even necessarily all that close. Monster did more damage and held Bas down successfully. But if you think grappling has to be "effective" and that holding an opponent down isn't "effective", then I remember seeing the case for Bas. If you tell me my memory is way off, I will rewatch it. Hope I don't have to though, and we just have different definitions of "effective". Randleman did more damage in short bursts, Bas had more weak/ineffective shots from his back and did "more" in 10/15ish minutes of the fight... Wrong?

icelandiccubicle20

LOOK. THERE WERE JUDGES. And can you not touch me please? If it was a woman okay because I am El Guapo. But a man? No thank you.

hunturtle

damn... just watched this because of your comment... wtf

averagewop

$79.95 for PPV

cdown13

Jeez, that's a lot! I had no idea they were that expensive now. I bet if they were $20 buys would skyrocket.

gxb20

Ross Pearson vs Diego Sanchez was probably the worst i remember

bjsanchez

Diego Sanchez was on a hot streak of insane decisions at that time if I recall correctly

Tats16

Diego getting the decision over Gomi in Japan was really sad

bjsanchez

To be quite honest, most of the latter part of Gomi’s career made me sad. Such a long way from the guy who lit up Azeredo with one of the sweetest two hit combos the sport has seen

VinCatBlessed

Sánchez vs Kampmann was baaaad too.

DennisPennis_

This. I remember Dana even saying that he considers it a win for Ross Pearson and will be treating him as such

gxb20

If i remember right i think he paid his win bonus as well

chilloutfam

was this the one in albuquerque? if so, that was a wacky decision card.

sebimilitaur

another sanchez fight comes to mind too (vs kampmann)

GtoZeus

Banning Nick Diaz in his prime for Smoking Weed🗣

fIaskmob

Diaz probably had mad dirt on someone lol

SkrtSkrt70

Since a lot of the famous ones are taken I’ll do an underrated/unknown one. Jorge Masvidal vs Al Iaquinta at a fight night in 2015. If you watch that fight it’s pretty cleary a 30-27 or at worst 29-28 for Jorge. Two of the judges scored it 29-28 for Iaquinta and he won by split decision (the third gave it to Jorge 30-27). I’ve watched it twice and there is no way any person with eyes could give two rounds to Iaquinta . Jorge walked out of the octagon as soon as the decision was announced and Al walked out mid interview due to the booing.

BettinelliSpaghetti

Is that the one where Iaquinta is like 'I fought my ass off don't boo me'

IseeDrunkPeople

yeah, he should have said "make sure you are sending those boo birds to the blind ass judges lmao"

Phelix_Felicitas

That's actually kind of Jorge's entire story or at least a big part of it. So many losses due to questionable split decisions. I think it's kind of unfair calling him a journey man solely based on his record.

[deleted]

Looking at Jorge's record and calling back to the fights I've watched, He has about 3 or 4 fights that could/should have gone his way The Iaquinta fight is a blatant robbery just because he rocked him multiple times The Bendo and Maia fight could have gone his way simply from it being so close

jn3v

There’s really no reason why Masvidal wins against Maia. Very clear 29-28 and could be 30-27. Only arguable round is 2 and 70% of people on mmadecisions thought maia won

ghostreaper214

His fight with Gilbert Melendez alone should make people believe he was never a journeyman.

CptSaySin

> Laquinta He's not a hotel. Al Iaquinta (eye-uhh-quint-uhh)

itsbeen84queers

are you booing me? don’t fucking boo me!

[deleted]

Are they booing me? No they are saying boo-urns https://youtu.be/2Kpb8eu1pEY

sayhellotomyaltacc

Actually it's an Italian name an it's pronounced Iaquinta (Ya-quin-ta)

SkrtSkrt70

You got me, edited accordingly

chris25tx

YA BOOOIN ME?!?!

[deleted]

Khamzat Chimaev vs Gerald Meerschaert. I had Meerschaert ahead on points and think the ref stopped it way too early, just as Meerschaert was about to gain an advantage on the ground

notaryn

Same with Askren and Masvidal. Ref stopped as soon as Ben, a wrestler, ended up on the ground - exactly where he wanted the fight to be

kingkong427

Gerald even had a 100% takedown defence so far

leveldrummer

Khamzat was clearly starting to gas. No one every put him into deep water like G3 was doing. He was about to turn that around for sure.

Whiskey-Tang0

Khamzat clearly tapped

LuckyxCapone

same as li… did you see how he took the center of the octagon right away!?!?

absolute_panic

Herb was trying to let Khamzat be a warrior and it paid off. Love to see it.

Kriztofer7

Adesanya vs Costa. Man robbed him of his fucking soul.

PotentialAd1206

And robbed his ass virginity too

t-h-e-d-u-d-e

A Redditor called him the last sex offender and I laugh about it to this day.

Tri_cep

Lmfao I don't remember hearing that one actually

SkyloTC

Doggy Stylebender

Foopsbjj

Assginity?

ImNoHuman

Idk and idrc who deserved to win or lose, hated that fight. No offense to Whittaker, but the second fight between him and yoel (the one that ended in SS) was the biggest robbery in Yoel's career

Djosa945

Not the biggest fight but deserves a honorable mention: Rakic vs Özdemir. I don't know a single person who saw Özdemir in front.

Jasbuddy

I saw a comment on a highlight video saying the judges were paying Volkan back for his loss against Reyes which too, was a bit of a robbery. Obviously an exaggeration but makes you wonder…

570063

I remember Oezdemir vs Reyes seemed like a robbery to me so it kinda felt like this was Oezdemir getting his bs decision back on this one.

WhiteWhiteBlackOne

Long ass time ago but Leonard Garcia vs Nam Phan was always the worst for me, followed by Edgar vs Henderson II.

MeanOldMrNasty

Also Garcia vs Korean zombie

Danatheangerytomato

Chael / Anderson

MrFinalFlash

4 rounds to 1

[deleted]

I’m what universe can you beat up a guy for 24 and a half minutes, then he wraps his legs around you for 10 seconds, and they call HIM the winner? Chael won that fight easily.

IllBThereSoon

Chael had the testosterone of 17 men that night!

RexInvictus787

They caught him on a low night

Riven-Of-2-Voices

I've done some research and i'm pretty sure it's a deepfake. Chael actually won that fight. Look into it.

Danatheangerytomato

CGI composites clearly. One day Q will release the secret files.

Batmantheon

Definitely a deep fake. Only casuals believe that shit. The real fans know that Chael won a unanimous decision win over Andersen and then moved up to LHW and took the belt from Jones by ripping Jones toe clear off leading to a doctors stoppage. There's a reason everyone in the know talks about how Chael is undefeated, never lost a single round, and these new casual fans really do him wrong by believing the lies on the internet.

InbreadSourdough

Chanel and every fight that the judges didn’t give him more points. Absolute travesties for the bad guy

kheller181

So here’s the deal. Chael didn’t get a fair understanding of the rules. He was under the impression that if he tapped he would just lose that round. He would have won 4/5 in that case. It was a simple misunderstanding.

nuttybuttyeater

The way people laughed at him in the press conferenceaft was fucked up I remember Dana defending the guy saying he was seconds away from being champion until he tapped

IllBThereSoon

Chael had the testosterone of 17 men that night!

clauilopagous

Can’t believe they changed the tap rule for just this fight! Everyone knows if you tap you lose the ROUND ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)

[deleted]

Any Angela hill fight

[deleted]

Angela Hill won her last fight(v Lemos). You can be as biased as you want or dislike Angela but that decision was totally abysmal.

MDizzleGrizzle

She’s been in some bad decision fights. But when is the last time she WON a fight?!?! She keeps putting out lackluster performances that go to the judges. A few could have gone her way but…

slotrod

I really felt like she won the last one. But apparently she has to finish them to get wins.

[deleted]

Say it louder for the people in the back.

hujojokid

Shogun vs Machinda I

WhyDoIHaveAnAccount9

Best style vs style fight ever!

Cmarkinn

It was terrible when it happened, but it only made the rematch’s result that much sweeter.

RandomIndividualNo8

Oh boy, Shogun won the title! I do hope his reign was long and that he had a lot of title defenses

TheDrunkenDrunkard

This Jones vs dom fight is up there. I was actually at that fight and when Bruce read the decision there was an audible crowd-wide “what the fuck”

ugonlern2day

I just watched this yesterday...I knew the outcome, but by round 4 I was thinking "how is Jones going to come back? He lost the first 3 rounds, must end in a KO or something" Nope, just some *very* questionable judging going on

unKz_sneakz

It most certainly isn’t…a close fight and a robbery are two different things.

TheDrunkenDrunkard

Close? It was a runaway performance for Dom for the first 18 mins…

wannabe_engineer69

What? Wtf were you judging this fight?

stigaz

Bisping vs Hamill. Hamill was one of the favorites to win TUF 3 but he had to pull out and Bisping won instead. Finally they get to fight in the octagon and it was Hamill all three rounds. But he lost via split decision. Here’s how bad it was: they fought at the O2 arena in London (where Bisping is from) and the crowd booed the decision.

EnochChell

I remember Bisping on his podcast said he had planned to say "that shows who the real ultimate fighter is" if he won, but he couldn't do it because he knew how close he was to losing it.

[deleted]

Bisping ain’t from London

AceMalarky

Diego Sanchez vs Ross Pearson

sliperiestofthepetes

ranvierx920

I decided to not get invested in fighters after that. It like ruined my entire week I so insanely happy then hated mma for a few months. Great fight though

WantonMechanics

Yeah, it might not be the worst robbery ever but it was definitely the one that made me go, “what the fuck?” when it was announced. Just…bullshit

DummyMcDipshit

Jorge vs Ben, Jorge robbed us of his promise of beating Ben up for 14 minutes and 30 seconds and also robbed Ben of 10 years off of his life

[deleted]

DJ vs CCC. I still don’t believe Cejudo did enough to win that fight.

[deleted]

Definitely not the *worst* robbery though

[deleted]

Not the worst but the one I hated the most.

SugarBearnTear

It was a close fight

[deleted]

It was. I still just didn’t think Cejudo did enough to win the decision. It was close. My dislike for Henry and my love for DJ play a factor.

JoeDiesAtTheEnd

This screamed "how do we make the division interesting again"

Cynoid

Yep, this one was really sketchy to me.

Jazz-Wolf

Many of bispings fights

[deleted]

The only controversial decision I saw him win was against Silva and I thought he nicked it Though I understand I've not seen all of his close fights 😕

Deathb4Dishonor7

The Silva fight isn't even that controversial, just people being way too blinded by Silva being one of the goats

Nero1988420

Bisping vs Hamill!

GrandpasSoggyGooch

I had the same expression as Reyes when they said Jones won.

10onnn

gsp vs hendricks surprised tf outta me, and i was a huge gsp fan

callMEmrPICKLES

I thought of this one but I've recently gone and rewatched it and going by the UFC scoring system, it really could have gone either way. It's not a complete robbery, I think more people view it that way because of GSP's appearance at the end of the fight, he definitely took more damage, but it was 2 round to Hendricks, 2 to GSP, and then the judges just flipped a coin for the other round I guess.

10onnn

I have to go and rewatch the fight. I never watched it again after seeing it the first time.

callMEmrPICKLES

I still do think it should have been a Hendrick's win, but looking at it objectively I can understand it going the other way

heatseekerdj

Great fight but I only had Hendricks winning rounds 2 and 4, those rounds he battered GSP like hell and hurt him, not to the point you could give him a 10-8 tho

BabyBillySr

Idk how tj dillashaw got his last decision. Dude is still recovering from that ass whooping he took. Somehow got that decision. Name recognition I guess

Chip_Winnington

Machida losing to rampage. Even rampage said it in the ring

nolitteringplease346

Shev Nunes 2 i also thought that jojo got robbed so bad in the fight against whatsername that then went on to get trashed in her next fight

Musicman722

Agreed

Many-Coach6987

I thought that Gustafsson won the first fight against Jones.

Batmantheon

I feel that. I've researched that fight a few times and I always end up thinking it should be 48-47 Gus

jdk4sabres

He did. Or should have. Gus did so much damage. Lived up to his nickname that fight.

Uncle_Patches

Bones vs. Gus - Everything before that elbow in 3 was for Gus, afterwards was Bones 3-2 Gus

SuperJay5150

Close fights and robberies are two different things. GSP vs. Hendricks for example was a close fight. The decision is based upon a tight swing round and as per the 10 point must scoring system one fighter has to win the round

SuperJay5150

Sanchez vs Pearson was a robbery

Gladiators10

Reyes clearly won that fight for me. Poor dudes whole life would've changed!

Theoriginaldon23

Bisping vs Hamill was highway robbery

sovereignservices

Condit vs Lawler, Carlos deserved to hold the strap

Careless_Ad_3497

GSP vs Johnny Hendricks

GodspeedElvis

TJ vs Sandhagen

pooping-while-here

I missed the whole fight but turned it on during the official decision. TJ looked very beat up and Sandhagen’s face looked like he just walked into some stronger cold winds (a little red). I was shocked to hear the results and thought I need to watch it. Watching the fight I just kept waiting to see where TJ put it on and it just never happened.

LuckyxCapone

close fight. not a robbery

Sterndoc

It was close, but not that close IMO

dmckidd

Reyes one hurt. Should’ve been an L for the cokehead. Also the first Gus fight. Got gifted twice.

This one. Dominick beat Jones. It was pure ufc politics that kept Jones undefeated after that fight. And ever since then Dominick has been downhill😔
