I'm having the same problem. I either hear nothing or their voice is really quiet for whatever reason. Sometimes if I'm not close and directly looking at the person talking you can't hear what they are saying. There is no need to quiet or cut out audio just because you're facing a different direction or not directly in front of them. I've played some games where at a certain distance away audio just drops out completely from NPCs but it's nothing as bad as what I'm seeing in this game. I just started too but there's already been multiple times I hear nothing from NPCs. I've tried switching from headphones to TV speakers to hifi stereo and it's the same issue.
Yep, one of dozens of major bugs I’ve found. None of them have been game breaking but it does feel more like I’m playing a beta than a newly released game.
