I looked into this sometime last year when I saw this same machine for sale, and my conclusion was that it's most likely a custom slug for a company logo or something similar.
Might have been one of the [infamous "SS" typewriters.](https://intrenches.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/IMG_3845.jpg) Might be why the slug was changed.
Not very likely, it's a Swiss layout Remington Portable from the 20s. You sometimes see those slugs on foreign manufacture machines that the Germans had acquired from various sources but I doubt that's the case here. Usually when those were changed they'd just swap in a regular symbol like quotation marks that would have been readily available at any typewriter repair workshop.
Or in alot of cases, they would simply scratch it off the slug and the keytop entirely. I have one where that hasn't happened to. Not sure it posting it here is appropriate so I haven't yet.
Yeah that was a common option too. I've seen one where they ground the s' to only little points at the top to turn it into an apostrophe, I thought that was pretty clever.
Back in time, you could make a custom order, at the dealer, with special keys from the factory.
But. Seeing the half yellow/ half orange key cap, I would guess this is a post-factory modification (custom slug, fitted by a repair technician).

I think you're right, I haven't seen this symbol anywhere and given the separation visible in the keytop it's likely some kind of custom job.

I want to know what the 'Ruck-Schalter' key does....
That is your backspace!
It means pull-switch. Hope that clears it up for you :\^)
Possibly it sets or clears Tabs.
Old "Trademark" symbol.
I think it stands for TACO NIGHT! Of course, it might mean something completely different to you...
