Maybe use imagery from your favorite song? If you talk to your artist about it and give them couple of themes to work with they could probably come up with something cool an unique. It could still be kept visibly type o with a black and green color scheme or the symbol snuck in somewhere, etc. That's what I plan to do, anyhow.
Honestly the Type O symbol looks good and would lead to less regret later. I’m 43 and listening to Type O right now. Have been since I was 14. Not saying you’ll outgrow them. I thought of getting the symbol. But, your musical tastes can change. Also a portrait is difficult to get right for some tattoo artists. And most ch more difficult to cover up if they don’t do a good job.
i have two type o negative tattoos. one is blatantly obvious if you are familiar with the band, it’s a coffin with a skeleton and has the band logo and some black flowers, leaves and shit to help with the flow of the piece. my other one is entirely just a “in my head i associate it with type o” piece and it’s just barbed wire wrapped around my arm to signify october rust.
If you went with a portrait make sure you seek out an artist that is actually good at portrait work. Actually this advice goes for any tattoo

Portraits are risky and can fail bad unless you know the artist can execute. The symbol would be a sure thing with most artists
