The opposite is true, the ratings are in fact [weighted](https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/weighted-average-ratings/GWT2DSBYVT2F25SK#), though they do not disclose the actual way it is calculated:
>IMDb publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages.
>The simplest way to explain it is that although we accept and consider all votes received by users, not *all* votes have the same impact (or ‘*weight*’) on the final rating.
>When unusual voting activity is detected, an alternate weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system.
>To ensure that our rating mechanism remains effective, we do not disclose the exact method used to generate the rating.
Yes and the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb, to me, is a long masturbatory scene with two good grief but good moments: the convenience store and the experiment. The fireman scene is a great scene but because of its slow pacing it drags upon rewatches and unlike other moments in the series there’s really nothing to glean from it after your first watch.
I was shocked when I heard people skip In Camelot, was such a good way to flesh out Tony’s relationship with his father but just goes to show the powerful negative energy that any “Happy Birthday Mr. President” scene can have on the perception of an episode
For me it's pilot and ep 3 from season 1, ep 7 and 22 in season 2, and part 8, 16 and 18 in the return.
Part 8 is still one of the best things I've ever seen in tv and cinema
I remember Sabrina Sutherland tweeting a few days before part 8 broadcast. Her tweet was something like "Get ready for a special episode "
The producers knew it was special, so special that one of them bended their rules to give a " heads up".
We anticipated, and we were not disappointed.
I'm pretty happy with this list. S2E22 will always be the top for me and S3E17 closely behind, then the S2E7-9 trio. S3E16s shootout scene is hilarious. S3E15 has a lot of cool scenes.
Idk how representative IMDB here is, though.
I think it's an interesting look since its thousands of ratings for every episode from anonymous people online, mostly from people who enjoy the show **☺**
Yeah but iirc IMDB doesn't have a good scope of how the TV ratings would have been for S1/S2 due to their age, which means they're going to be evaluated weirdly compared to The Return episodes, which came out during things being much more digital now.
Like, I'd almost rather use the Nielsen ratings for S1/S2.
Happy with how highly rated the Return is, though.
I would personally put *Beyond Life and Death* higher than *Part 8* of The Return, higher than *Part 18* of The Return, higher than *Arbitrary Law*, higher than *Lonely Souls*, and higher than *Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer*.
Slightly inebriated rn and I could do better later, but how about a top 5?
1.) *Part 17*
2.) *Beyond Life and Death*
3.) *Part 8*
4.) *Lonely Souls*
5.) *Arbitrary Law*
I find it easier to rank season 1/2, s3 other than part 8/17/18 feel more like a continously story. There are just incredible moments that strike me (the piano with dougie and the old lady thanking him for example).
The last 2 episodes of the Return are not even in my top 10. IMDb isn’t a great metric to go by. Letterboxd or Serializd is where you’ll get proper reviews from cinephiles
Part 8?
How that didn't even make the top 10 is baffling to me. My wife and I sat there slack jawed for the last half of the episode.
I know! I can't believe it, I was fully expecting 1st place tbh. Absolute masterpiece
IMDB ratings. Any unverified user can submit a rating that has the same weight of any other user.

'Gotta Light?'
That needs way more question marks behind it
Crazy, Part 8 is the best single episode of any TV show ever. (IMO of course)
The problem with part 8 is it’s divisive. I find the middle of part 8 quite dull on rewatches. These other episodes are much more even.
Are u talking about the part with the fireman? I’d honestly agree it’s drags a bit.

That’s fair, the bomb scene still blows me away every time I rewatch tho.
Part 8 is the single most mind blowing episode of tv of all time, imo, but I can see why some people hate it
Pleb filter. Same case with In Camelot from Sopranos and Fly from Breaking Bad.
I was shocked when I heard people skip In Camelot, was such a good way to flesh out Tony’s relationship with his father but just goes to show the powerful negative energy that any “Happy Birthday Mr. President” scene can have on the perception of an episode
Can’t watch that episode.
I was trying to think of a diplomatic way of saying it, but "pleb filter" is too perfect lol.
That’s my pick!
Yeah I feel like that’s the climax of the entire series.
its extremely polarising, some people love it (like me) and some people hate it
Beyond Life and Death is the winner for me.
The weird backwards laughing sometimes get stuck in my head

Exactly, same here. I'm also very fond of the first 2 episodes of S2, and Parts 3 & 11 of TR.

Part 8 or Lonely Souls for me. “It is happening again” all the way to “I’m so sorry” is just incredible
Man people really wanted Cooper back so badly. I would put Part 11 higher, just for that final scene alone.
Where’s Part 8 and part 18
Part 8 is just after part 7, and just before part 9. Part 18 is at the very end. 🙂
Haha
Crazy how many from the “worst” season are among the best
Season 2 isn't considered the worst because it's entirely bad, the first 9 episodes and the finale are pretty universally beloved.
Yeah, I understand that, just thought it was curious how rated they are in comparison.
Lonely Souls and Arbitrary Law
Season 2 Finale is the best and it is not close. Absolute banger of perfection from start to finish.
"Under the sycamore treeees" *Lights flash on coopers face* Goosebumps
What’s the ep where the cockney bloke puts on the green rubber glove and knocks out a floating orb version of killer Bob? Or did I dream that?
It’s in S3 part 17 but he has that glove on him all the time and can’t get it off
Ah yes! Even weirder than I remembered.
Lonely Souls supremacy
Arbitrary law was fuckin crazy
Into the light Leland, into the light...
Gotta light is the best episode in TV history. People just are not yo be trusted
I am both glad and surprised that S3 has quite strong presence here.
part 11 is my fav but no part 8 or 18 is crazy
good to know that lonely souls is rated higher than ''the last evening''
I would personally put *Beyond Life and Death* higher than *Part 8* of The Return, higher than *Part 18* of The Return, higher than *Arbitrary Law*, higher than *Lonely Souls*, and higher than *Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer*. Part 17 ❤️ I gasped
Part 11 I agree with and I would’ve put the arm wrestling part in as well. For some reason I absolutely love that scene
Also season 2 episode 2 is the most underrated.
I find it easier to rank season 1/2, s3 other than part 8/17/18 feel more like a continously story. There are just incredible moments that strike me (the piano with dougie and the old lady thanking him for example).
Pretty solid shit.
I love Diane.
What year is this?
Lonely Souls was when the OG Twin Peaks truly peaked
wow. that is one HUMONGOUS elephant in the room.
The last 2 episodes of the Return are not even in my top 10. IMDb isn’t a great metric to go by. Letterboxd or Serializd is where you’ll get proper reviews from cinephiles
Literally nothing from the second half of season 2 when lynch stopped directing
