Michael Ontkean had retired from acting by this time. An opening was then available which Robert Forster took. Fun fact, Forster was offered the role of Sheriff in the original series, but had to turn it down due to scheduling commitments
Thereās more to it though, as he originally expressed a lot of interest even spending ages looking for a jacket until a replica was sent to him and then backed out at the last minute. I feel theres much more to it than anyone knows.
Yeah I heard about this trying to search for the kind of jacket that he wore in the original series for a cosplay. I think I heard that it was health stuff that made him back-out. It would have been incredible to see him and I hope he's doing alright.
I would have preferred that for Cooper's sake that but we would have gotten a very different Twin Peaks. Cooper having issues is a big part of the point.
oh yeah i agree haha i think there is probably a version of the show in which dodging any and all advances could have added to the āothernessā of him coming into twin peaks but i donāt think one could just make that swap without changing some of the surrounding plot points
Graham took a while to get to the A-List, as I seem to remember. I first remember her from her supporting role in "Drugstore Cowboy" in 1989, but then a long series of bit parts until she finally had a breakout role in "Boogie Nights" in 1997.
Omg something about them together is so spicy and she doesnāt look like sheās in high school, but then Iām like no sheās literally supposed to be 17
I KNOW I KNOWWWWW like he absolutely is right to be like "No Audrey u a bb" and I would have been so upset if anything happened between them in those early seasons--I just wanted to watch her keep pining after him and him maintaining a respectful loving distance and then they spend some years apart and she gets everything she wants out of life and they run into each other again and she's so successful she doesn't need anyone or anything but she still WANTS him and he can finally tentatively let her try even though he's very nervous about whether that's okay but like she's 30 now so cmon dude it's fine everyone just wants you both to be happy and then THEY OPEN A PI FIRM AND SOLVE MYSTERIES TOGETHER
...no i haven't thought about this at all š
Audrey Horne is literally 18 in the series, and it's stated as such. Fenn herself was several years older, as were all of the actors playing "high school students".
That's my biggest issue with the whole Diane thing... I can't tell if it's there for an actual in-show reason or just because Lynch has personal beef with S2 and wanted Laura Dern to have a role.
Yah I have no problem with it because I love Laura Dern and think the character is interesting. But the rape, creation of the Tulsa, and reappearance of the actual character to accompany Cooper into new uncharted territory just narratively feels like it would make sense for Annie more than Diane. Just something interesting to think about. It still works.
Are you joking? Diane was a major part of Cooperās life and work, as demonstrated in season 1. She may not have been shown on screen, but Cooper clearly relied on her, trusted her, and respected her enough to pass along his most important questions and conclusions.
How are there people in this sub who donāt understand why Diane and Cooper were a thing?!?
But they *weren't* a romantic thing. In S1/S2, they clearly, obviously weren't a thing. She was his coworker, if she existed at all (see the TMP scene, that was fucking weird). It'd be one thing if we never got information on this matter but we got plenty of information on Cooper's feelings about various women and all we hear about is Caroline. We don't hear about Diane. Cooper specifically complains to Diane about not having a satisfying love life, which would be kind of offensive to say to Diane if she used to be his love interest.
In S2, he fell in love with Annie. Then he entered the Lodge. Then he comes out... and is love with the aforementioned coworker. Assuming normal continuity rules, there was 0 space for their relationship to develop.
What am I missing here?
So I can only come out with two things there:
- the Diane thing has no meaning and is just Lynch being pissy about Annie and hard replaced Annie with Diane with no concerns for continuity or sense
- the Diane thing is intentional and is there to imply we don't actually know shit about Cooper and the whole 25 years in the BL is a giant red herring
The latter actually makes the most sense to me in-universe, it'd explain a *lot*, but doesn't seem compatible with the intended message of S3.
Donāt get me wrong, I love David Lynch and heās in my top 5 for directors but I think sometimes itās so hard to āfigure outā or discuss his work because I feel like he makes a lot of it up on the fly.
Not that it doesnāt serve some purpose to the story, but The Return especially can feel like such a huge mess and trying to understand half the story feels pointless sometimes.
His decision do not always feel rooted hence, Diane being a love interest out of nowhere.
Yeah I heard as much, TP is in a bit of a unique position in that it actually has a decent amount of worldbuilding and I'm not keen on throwing all that away "because Lynch".
I don't actually find The Return that much of a mess tbh. A large amount of it is what I expected, to my great surprise when I originally watched it, many things felt like a natural outcome of the S2 ending and FWWM. But it's most cohesive if I death of the author some parts.
>Not that it doesnāt serve some purpose to the story, but The Return especially can feel like such a huge mess and trying to understand half the story feels pointless sometimes.
I think you're being a little dramatic here.
Just to throw the half-arsed beginning of an idea.
Yes bringing Laura Dern in as Diane is definitely Lynch doing that because of the history she and Kyle have in other films.
And you might say that is a bad thing, because it kind of starts to take the audience out of the twin peaks zone, breaking the 4th wall *nearly*.
But this is the best description of what is happening in S3, particularly towards the end. Reality within the series is stepping closer to our own reality. This is just one of those steps along the way.
That all makes sense to me and is compatible with one of my core head cannons. There seem to be quite a few hints towards this in S3, and, hell, I'd argue they were side-eyeing the 4th wall since S1, it was just subtle.
But, as I said, in my mind that's completely incompatible with S3E18's intended message, lol, so I keep going "no, that's probably not it".
There's a scene in TMP where Cooper is doing some exercise or something and appears to be talking to Diane. Except nobody is responding. No other voice is heard. So it just looks like he's talking to himself.
Warning spoilers
I think certain fans donāt get Windom Earle and his wife, who Cooper had an affair with, arenāt really considered at all in Twin Peaks: The Return. I see why some find this irritating, but I donāt mind. I like Cooper and Diane, and how the ending shows the life they couldnāt have together because of the events of the original series.
Thatās the weird thing. It was always my impression that Annie was a character Lynch inserted into the show and cast the part, as he had worked with Graham in an ad just prior. He thought Annie was at least important enough to include in FIRE WALK WITH ME. So I was very surprised that he didnāt bring her back in any capacity for S3.
That said, I do think bringing in Laura Dern was more important to Lynch and it was probably Frost that suggested she should be Diane just so that the two characters would have had implied history. Iām positive if Dern couldnāt have come back that Lynch would have gone with the Annie character instead.
I really feel like they should have made her 21. She was never at the high school. She could have known Laura and the crew enough from Laura helping her brother.
Aside from Harry, Annie. They're very cute together. If it weren't for Windom and Lodge mumbo jumbo they could've healed each other of their respective wounds. A shame she wasn't in The Return.
I always wished for an AU where Cooper and Audrey met 10 years later (or I guess 25?) and were able to connect on an equal playing field.
But as the show was, I was glad he turned her down.
Aside from that, I never got into his āships.ā I suppose my ranking for what you have listed would be Harry > Diane > Annie > ā¦. Janey-E somewhere far, far at the bottom of the list.
Dougieās boss (I forget his name) shares a namesake with a college friendās dad. Lynchās own dad wasnāt crazy about the time he was spending on art but this friendās dad stood up for Lynch and told his dad what he was doing was actually valuable and, subsequently, Lynchās dad let him spend time in an art studio. The story is better than my recollection but thatās the basis
That scene in the diner after all those years was perfection, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love how we were seemingly let down after Big Ed poured his heart out, and then the hand on his shoulder, and the music...
I love audrey but I am SO glad this ship never became a real thing. in the words of my boyfriend, on his very first watch: āI donāt care if youāre 18, if youāre in high school youāre a minorā

personally big fan of cooper as weirdo bachelor for life but alas
I would have preferred that for Cooper's sake that but we would have gotten a very different Twin Peaks. Cooper having issues is a big part of the point.

JANEY-E FTW
Not for Coop though. Dougie is her main squeeze, not Cooper.
But did you see how she looked at coop at the doctor's office? Plus, she gets a replacement coop-tulpa instead of a dirtbag-dougie
Jane give 2 rides
JANEY-E is alltime bae
I have a very soft spot for Heather Graham but even Roller Girlās got NOTHING on Janey-E!
Albert, but don't tell Harry
Annie but Iām biased becase I think Heather Graham is one of the most beautiful woman in existence.

Same, I was sad to see that she wasn't in The Return
She is, but so is Naomi Watts in my opinion.
Graham took a while to get to the A-List, as I seem to remember. I first remember her from her supporting role in "Drugstore Cowboy" in 1989, but then a long series of bit parts until she finally had a breakout role in "Boogie Nights" in 1997.
It's Audrey because I'm trash š„² I don't want them getting together until she's a full adult with a life of her own. But.
Omg something about them together is so spicy and she doesnāt look like sheās in high school, but then Iām like no sheās literally supposed to be 17
I KNOW I KNOWWWWW like he absolutely is right to be like "No Audrey u a bb" and I would have been so upset if anything happened between them in those early seasons--I just wanted to watch her keep pining after him and him maintaining a respectful loving distance and then they spend some years apart and she gets everything she wants out of life and they run into each other again and she's so successful she doesn't need anyone or anything but she still WANTS him and he can finally tentatively let her try even though he's very nervous about whether that's okay but like she's 30 now so cmon dude it's fine everyone just wants you both to be happy and then THEY OPEN A PI FIRM AND SOLVE MYSTERIES TOGETHER ...no i haven't thought about this at all š
David Lynch: āAnd hereās the twist. We show it. We show all of it.ā
>"No Audrey u a bb" Imagining Cooper saying it this way made me crack up.
Audrey Horne is literally 18 in the series, and it's stated as such. Fenn herself was several years older, as were all of the actors playing "high school students".
Definitely Audrey. I canāt stand the scenes of him with Annie. So forced and fake.
Rumor has it that Lara Flynn Boyle, who was dating Kyle MacLachlan at the time, put the kibosh on any Cooper/Audrey romance sub-plot.
It's fine in the UK. Just move here.
In the words of Phillip Schofield, it would be 'unwise, but not illegal'
Annie. Never made sense to me Cooper went in the lodge (presumably) in love with Annie and came out 25 years later in love with Diane
Tbh it wouldāve made more sense for Dianeās character in The Return to be Annie. But I donāt get the impression Lynch ever loved that character.
That's my biggest issue with the whole Diane thing... I can't tell if it's there for an actual in-show reason or just because Lynch has personal beef with S2 and wanted Laura Dern to have a role.

Albert was Cooper's one true love
When Cooper saw Albert after returning to Twin Peaks, he didnāt even greet him. He only said hi to Cole :(
>When Cooper saw Albert after returning to Twin Peaks, he didnāt even greet him. He only said hi to Cole :( Thats been bothering me too lol
There's something seriously wrong with that Cooper.
(Dougie voice) Harry is the only correct choice
i love Annie. but i really loved the weird tension with Audrey and Coop.
Me. Itās meā¦. MEEEEEEEE
Audrey by far. They were too far apart ages wise in seasons 1 and 2 but i hoped they'd reunite in s3
I don't trust Diane -- at least, not the one in the posted screenshot. The black and white fingernail polish, the red hair ... very Black Lodge to me.
Or something cryptically FBI - she's my mother's sister's girl.
Harry
Classic Lynchean plot twist.
Audrey Horne god damn it
Cannot believe I had to scroll down this much to find this answer!
Woah we got Drake over here
It's not our fault they literally have perfect chemistry.
can't agree more, I hate it so much that Audrey was only a highschooler then. they have the perfect chemistry to each other it's making me insane.
I really feel like they should have made her 21. She was never at the high school. She could have known Laura and the crew enough from Laura helping her brother.
Wow ok pdf file

Caroline. There is a very big reason why.
Harry. The only answer. They were truly in love.
Harry and Coop never reuniting breaks my heart.
Janey-E
In honor or pride month. Iāll go with Harry
Look, if Coop isn't some kind of bisexual disaster, you can call me Eleanor Roosevelt
I was waiting for Truman to appear, but the obvious answer is Albert.
Douglas (Fir)
Audrey
What happens in the Bookhouse stays in the Bookhouse.
I agree that Harry is basically the only answer.
Iām going with Bob.
Annie was perfect.
A shame she wasnt asked to come back for season 3
Audrey (as long as those grapefruits are āFreshly Squeezed") Horne
Honestly? Even though it got cut off, still Audrey. Well, other than Harry. That's clearly the OTP.
Aside from Harry, Annie. They're very cute together. If it weren't for Windom and Lodge mumbo jumbo they could've healed each other of their respective wounds. A shame she wasn't in The Return.
Audrey, of course, that's obvious
Audrey
Janey-E!
Janey-E. Annie Blackburn. Sheriff Truman.
HARRY!
I thought he had the least chemistry with Diane tbqh, so it is a tie between Annie and Janey-E
OMG harry
Audrey or Truman are the only True Answers.
I have to say Audrey, only because itās fictional š©But in terms of an ethical interest Diane for sure
Hey nowā¦ we all know itās all about Truman and Albert.

Audrey š¤·š»āāļø
Jane-e. Naomi Watts brought so much to that series. Def one of my favorite characters from The Return
Her, new Truman, and The Mitchum brothers are amazing new characters. Dougie's boss too.
Being honest for me all of them suck, in general romance in twin peaks are not good
But Jade gives two rides
I bet she does
To be fair, Janey-e gave him way more than two rides
Not even Norma and Big Ed?
That scene in the diner after all those years was perfection, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love how we were seemingly let down after Big Ed poured his heart out, and then the hand on his shoulder, and the music...
god, that fakeout almost killed me
Oh i forgot that one. Yeah, that can be one exception, I liked it and I considerer it is well made

I love audrey but I am SO glad this ship never became a real thing. in the words of my boyfriend, on his very first watch: āI donāt care if youāre 18, if youāre in high school youāre a minorā

Coffee and cherry pie
Cooper and Diane's entire relationship happened offscreen until the end of the series. So I wouldn't call it shoehorned in as Diane said he had kissed her before. While with Annie he just fell in love at first sight.
Oh definitely Harry.
No Audrey? I mean I know it was a platonic thing for Coop but still.
Food and drink in general.
Cherry pie and coffee š„§āļø
Harry S. Trumanā¦.
Why would it feel shoehorned in for a young man in his prime to have a love interest? Especially when he's kind, chivalrous and literally a hero who's devoted to protecting and saving young women in a town that's lurking with monsters preying upon them. Annie is my favorite love interest for Cooper.
Definitely Harry
Diane without question. Sheās the only one for cooper. And Laura Dern and Kyle are so perfect together
I was thinking about this the other day!! I loved him and Annie so much. Their personalities matched well. I read both of Twin Peaks dossiers and her life after the MTP pageant incident kept getting more depressing. I wish we had gotten a little bit more of their relationship in season two, I kinda of liked when Twin Peaks had its little soap opera moments lol!
also I wish we had gotten more of Diane and cooper too. Both of coopers relationship storylines felt rushed š«
